I was born on 26 September 1938 in Kazan, Russia. That’s where my father Dmitry Dmitriyevich Stepanov was sent after he graduated from the Kiev Artillery College. My mother was a nurse. The family faced the first hour of the Great Patriotic war at the border in the town called Ciechanowiec. All the horrors we endured during the war are described in the book “Love and Tears”. In 1946 my mother got a job in Donbas and moved from the village Zlatopol to the town Yenakiyevo. There I saw hunger again – the post-war hunger this time. In autumn 1947 we returned to Zlatopol and I started my second year at school.
