I was born on 26 September 1938 in Kazan, Russia. That’s where my father Dmitry Dmitriyevich Stepanov was sent after he graduated from the Kiev Artillery College. My mother was a nurse. The family faced the first hour of the Great Patriotic war at the border in the town called Ciechanowiec. All the horrors we endured during the war are described in the book “Love and Tears”. In 1946 my mother got a job in Donbas and moved from the village Zlatopol to the town Yenakiyevo. There I saw hunger again – the post-war hunger this time. In autumn 1947 we returned to Zlatopol and I started my second year at school. On the fateful day of 26 September 1948 I climbed to the attic to get some fire wood at 6 o’clock in the morning and fell down head on. A I was born on 26 September 1938 in Kazan, Russia. I couldn’t walk for 2.5 years. My mother took me to the neurosurgical institute in Kiev to have me examined by the famous professor Aratyunov. I was diagnosed with brain tumour and was being prepared for the operation. But the outcome of this operation was very dubious, so my mother came and took me back. At home she put my bed in the garden and I spent all the time in the fresh air. Gradually I started to recover. I decided to catch up with my class. In the autumn I passed exams for the fourth form, studied in the fifth form, next autumn passed exams for the sixth form – and I was level. I studied well – I had just two good marks in the final certificate, the rest were excellent. In the ninth and tenth forms I was the leader of the Comsomol organization at our school.
There was a rule then – to enter the University you needed to have a two-year working experience. Together with 15 other school graduates I went to work in Donbas. The first entry in my work record book is “road worker – asphalt paver”. In a year my mother came and took me away so that I could enter the University. I failed to enter the Medical Institute in Kiev. I returned home and got a job of a hospital cleaner at the regional hospital and at the same time attended the preparatory courses. In 1959 I entered the Medical Institute in Odessa. In 1965 I was offered to stay at the institute and do research. But I know that science without practice is pointless. I needed a challenge, so I asked to be sent to a remote place in Kazakhstan, where I got more experience than I bargained for. I worked as the head doctor and all other kinds of doctor at the main regional hospital in Kostanai oblast from 1965 to 1968. In 1968 I moved to Almaty working as an x-ray doctor first at the regional hospital and then at the Central City hospital.
In 1975 I gave birth to my daughter Irina. As I had the courage to be both mother and father I strived to do my best to make sure my daughter had her head held high. I looked for the weak points in radiology and found simple, easily accessible substances, which improved the quality of the radiographic contrast medium for digestive tract and bronchial tree investigations. In 1986 I got a flat with extra living space as an innovator. The same year I wrote the first article in the news-paper “Doctor is the enemy of smoking”. At that time a cigarette was part of the image of a surgeon even in films. The staff room in our emergency surgery department was simply unbearable, as we say, you could hang an axe there, so thick was the smoke. Soon the whole world started paying attention to this problem. After I retired, I started writing articles in different newspapers and magazines. One of my key subjects was the opera and ballet theatre. Once we saw a beautiful performance of “Faust” for an almost empty house. Since that moment I became a passionate promoter of this art form.
