It also sounds like that blank page is bothering you. I completely understand; a blank page can be really daunting. Do you usually write in longhand, or on a computer? You might try switching formats to see if that helps break the writer’s block. If you get a notebook for writing longhand, maybe doodle a little before you start to write so that the page isn’t blank and your pen is moving in a creative way. It’s also totally ok to write junk—even “I’m not sure how the story starts”—just to get yourself used to putting words on the page again. There’s not one right way to help yourself through a block, so just try things to see what works for you. Best of luck!

New on the Website

Autumn has arrived in the USA, and with the turn of the season I’ve made some refreshes to the website. The Home page now features seasonal works; when I change them up, I’ll share about the books on the blog.

Cover art for Those Autumn Nights by Theresa Romain. A white man and woman in historical clothing embrace in a ruined building, lit only by candlelight

You will not be shocked to see that Those Autumn Nights is a featured title, because, well, autumn. This is a completely stand-alone novella, unrelated to any series, with a second-chance

“He wanted Charlotte's happiness more than his own. But how much greater would his own be if they were together? Somehow, sometime---maybe when she flirted with him over sour ale, maybe when she bandaged his arm---she had come to rest upon his heart.
Somehow, he had come to love her.”
Theresa Romain, Fortune Favors the Wicked

“Any place could be a cage. And maybe, with the right person, any place could be a home.”
Theresa Romain, Fortune Favors the Wicked

“Let me help," said Benedict. "Let me do this for you."

He took the spade from her hand, allowing her to step back and stand beside Maggie. To slip an arm around her crying daughter.

With smooth, slow movements, he turned over the earth. Quietly, doing what needed to be done with a graciousness that meant everything.

And that was when she realized: she had fallen in love with him.”

Topics Mentioning This Author

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Hi, Lucinda--thanks for finding me! I love history too and always love to chat about books. I do most of my posting within this romance discussion group: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3... It's a private group, but the moderators allow membership to anyone who requests it. Lots of history fans over there, too.

Best wishes and happy reading!
Theresa

L Dear Theresa,
Thank you for being my friend here on Goodreads. I adore historical fiction (from Diana Gabaldon, to Susan Fraser king and Anne Clinard Barnhill to Ken Follett to name but a few of my favorites), hence i do hope to be able to read some of your work in the future.
Thank you and i very much look forward to future book discussions.

Kind Regards
Lucinda x

Theresa Romain Friends, I know I'm quiet on this page. But I'm part of a really fun historical romance discussion group here on Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3...

If this looks like your thing, ask a moderator to join--they're a wonderful bunch, and the group will welcome you right in!
