The aliens we thought were long gone are coming back.

Just his luck, alien-hybrid Ben Duncan is the only one for the job. Being an empath and a financial wizard, he’s called in to uncover an essential ally at a small regional bank in Vegas to thwart a plot his alien ancestors, the Akurns, seemed to have started there. If their heinous plans are successful, the global economy would crash and weaken mankind for their invasion in less than five short months. When Ben arrives at his assignment as a covert consultant, he meets the intriguing Julienne and is instantly alarmed at the intense attraction he has for her. He’d love to indulge in his obsession with the delectable woman, but knows he has no choice but to stay as far away from her as possible. The fate of billions don’t leave time for anything personal.

As senior vice-president, Julienne King leads a stressful life immersed in organizing a huge merger for a local bank in Vegas. And meeting some arrogant, hotter-than-hell, aloof outside consultant makes things worse. When she stumbles on an insidious money laundering scheme that threatens the global economy, she’s caught and kidnapped by one of her hateful bosses. While in captivity, she’s threatened with alien experimentation, death, or both. But what shocks her the most is it turns out she may not be who or what she thought she was.

Now it’s a race against time. Can a banker and an alien-hybrid overcome their misconceptions and to not only work together, but to realize their love is the key to mankind’s salvation?

Read an Excerpt

Julienne took a step back to put some distance between them. It didn’t help.

Ben’s lips turned up at the ends but his well-built arms hung loose at his side. Now her mouth dried. This was the first time she’d seen him without a suit. His dark T-shirt molded lovingly to his taut frame. She gave herself a mental head slap and struggled to pull her gaze away from his chest. “What are you doing here?” She coughed. Damn frog in her throat was in the way.

The skin at the edge of his blue eyes crinkled before he strolled past without answering. He opened the door and poked his head out before leaving the small closet.

Dammit! She stomped her foot before following the exasperating man. She almost plowed into his back when he stopped.

He turned to face her. He was in the shadows and she couldn’t see his expression. When he said nothing, she put her fists on hips. “Excuse me, you didn’t answer my question. What are you doing here?”

“Apparently I’m saving your sweet self.” His smile widened. “And what, may I ask, are you doing here? Find anything interesting?”

Her nose rose a notch. “Yes, damn it!” She flung an arm to the wall that Bernie disappeared through. “What in the hell just happened? How did Bernie create a mirror that wasn’t there, walk through it and then vanish?”

“Are you sure that’s what you saw?”

She gritted her teeth as a slow, burning heat crept up her neck.

About the Author:

Keri Kruspe, award-winning “Author of Otherworldly Romantic Adventures” loves nothing more than to write about romances that feature “feisty heroines who aren’t afraid to take a chance on life… or love”. Her writing career started when she became irritated that most SciFi romances had women kidnapped before they could find love. Determined to create something different, she turned “the alien kidnapping trope upside down” (Vine Voice) and the ALIEN EXCHANGE trilogy was born.

Keri’s latest SciFi Romance novel, ALIEN LEGACY: THE EMPATH, is the first in a five-book series of the Ancient Alien Descendants, taking the Ancient Alien motif and mixing it with a sensual, romantic twist.

A native Nevadan, Keri is a lifelong avid reader who lives in Northwestern Michigan with her hubby and the newest member of the family, a Jack Russell Terrier named Hestia. When not immersed in her made-up worlds, she enjoys discovering the fascinating landscape of her new home and pairing red wine with healthy ways to cook. Most of all, she loves finding her next favorite author.

If you want to know when Keri’s next book will come out, please visit her website at http:/kerikruspe.com, where you can sign up for her mailing list. You’ll get a FREE copy of the novella, The Day Behind Tomorrow that is a prologue to the ALIEN LEGACY series. Not to mention being kept updated on the life of a dedicated, obsessed author.

Blurb

Reuniting with the man who broke her heart has never felt so right.

Divorced dad Birley Haynes is too busy raising his children and running his family’s music academy to start a relationship. Then Harmony Holdich, his high school sweetheart, returns home to Willow Springs, Vermont for Christmas and falls into his bed. She brings light and fun back into his life, but he can’t brush aside the threatening incidents around his workplace.[image error]

Harmony hadn’t expected a complication like Birley, especially so soon after the death of her unfaithful husband. With her life a mess, she plans to move across the country and start over. All she can offer him is a fling, but her heart yearns for more.

When the threats rise, how will Birley keep his children safe and convince Harmony to give love another chance?

Excerpt (PG)

He sighed heavily. Snapping at her wouldn’t convince her to stick around. “Have you thought about me over the years?”

Her bottom lip trembled, then she sucked it between her teeth. “Of course I have. High school was a long time ago, and our dreams clashed. You wanted a laidback life, even though you cut loose with Susannah in college. I wanted big-city living, and I got it. I like it.”

[image error]

“So a rich-ass condo means that much to you? You want a new job slaving away five or six days a week for some major corporation until you’re exhausted?” He silently cursed. Not only did he slave away at his job, he was growing more tired of it by the day.

Good job, man. Way to control your temper.

In the back of his mind, he’d always believed he and Harmony would find one another again. Susannah and Claude didn’t compute. How crazy was that? Did he marry someone so different from himself because, subconsciously, he didn’t want the relationship to work?

A frown creased her brow. “I don’t need or want expensive things, but I like to work, to feel useful. My dream home is a little yellow bungalow with a big yard in a suburb.” She rocked in the chair as though she longed to jump up and run out the door. “I don’t want to argue. Let’s finish eating and hit the slopes.” She polished off her chips in a handful of loud crunches.

“What did you expect?” His throat constricted. “We’ve never hashed this stuff out since Susannah and Claude were always stuck up our asses. It’s time we deal with it.”

She scowled, then finished her grinder.

Birley gritted his teeth. Why had he been so stupid all those years ago? He’d wanted her to attend the University of Vermont with him, but she balked at another lengthy stint in school. He never should’ve walked off, leaving her crying on the porch of her parents’ house. She wanted time to think about her future—they’d only graduated from high school that morning—but her refusal didn’t mean she’d stopped loving him.[image error]

Too bad he hadn’t realized the truth at the time. She’d hurt his pride and broken his heart. Nothing mattered but hurting her in return. They avoided each other for the rest of the summer, then he headed off to the university.

God, how he’d missed her. She’d continued to work for her uncle while earning her accounting degree at a local community college and later moved to New Jersey for her job. Any chance of repairing their relationship had left with her, but by then, he was with Susannah.

Birley ate the rest of his sandwich, which slid down his gullet like cardboard. “No matter what you decide, I’m happy you’re home now.” The hope in his chest deflated. He stood and tugged on his gloves. “Let’s hit one of the blue squares. You okay with that?”

She nodded and followed him up. After they threw away their trash, they left the lodge.

The Buddha and the Bee: Biking through America’s Forgotten Roadways on a Journey of Discovery

by Cory Mortensen

I’d like to welcome author Cory Mortensen and thank him for introducing himself in the interview. Cory, here’s the microphone:

[image error]

What is something you’ve lied about?

My age, my weight, my fastest mile, why I was speeding, why I’m late, why I didn’t follow up… How much time do we have?

Who is the last person you hugged?

My wife. We escaped Arizona’s 115 degree days and headed to Minnesota to enjoy the summer.  She had to fly home early for work and I decided to drive the route recorded in The Buddha and the Bee. When I arrived home around 1 a.m., she was waiting up for me. We’d been apart almost 3 weeks. She opened the door when I pulled up and I gave her a big hug.

What are you reading now?

Can’t Hurt Me – David Goggins

How do you come up with the titles to your books?

This just came to me.

I was out hiking in the mountains and was fortunate enough to remember it. I was just tossing words and phrases together. Cut-and-pasting the various ideas in my mind. I thought the title needed to be something that was precise in what was behind the cover. “Boy Rides Bike West” or “Peddling West,” but I couldn’t bring myself to that. I then asked myself: what are people fond of?

Mother Earth. Check.

Happiness. Check.

During this process I thought of my old company, how did that name come about? EKHO. I later started the Bee-fit line. The models were the Worker Bee, Busy Bee, and Queen Bee, and the storage case was the Bee Hive. So I started thinking about bees. Everyone likes bees — they are good, they pollinate, they are part of conspiracies — I like all these things.

Bees. Check.

When I got home, my wife mentioned she wanted a Buddha statue by the pool and bam, it clicked. The Buddha and the Bee. I ran to my office and wrote it down. Brilliant. Taking to my computer, I googled it and as if pre-ordained, there was in fact a quote by the Buddha about Bees and it 100% worked for my story.

“As a bee gathering nectar does not harm or disturb the color and fragrance of the flower; so do the wise move through the world.”

—Gautama Buddha

Share your dream cast for your book.

Right away I went to the cast of Roadside Prophets, directed by Abbe Wool. This group is going to age me as I don’t know any of the younger actors out there today.

Cory Mortensen – Sam Rockwell

Wes Mortensen – Albert Finney

Mike – Matthew McConaughey

Trailer park group – John Leguizamo (Fernando), Ann Dowd, Luis Guzman

Copy sales guy – Jonah Hill

Don – Peter Falk

Hot Sulphur Springs group – David Arquette, Ed Norton, Debi Mazar, Sarah Paulson, Kevin Bacon (Ranger). The fighters would be Chuck Liddell and Oleg Taktarov.

Driver in Utah – Kevin Costner

Bike Shop owner – Greg Lemond

Little old lady in Nevada – Phylicia Rashad

All motel people would be the same person just to mess with everyone – Tim Roth

Harley guy who took my picture – Danny Trejo

GENRE: Memoir

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Life-Changing Journey…
…But this is NOT a typical blah-blah-blah memoir
Planning is for sissies. A solo bike ride across the country will be filled with sunshine, lollipops, rainbows, and 80 degree temps every day, right? Not so much. The Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, an alkaline desert, and the Sierra Nevadas lay miles and days ahead. Disappointment with unrealized potential, and the thirst for what’s next drew farther away in the rotating wide-angle shockproof convex rear-view mirror.
“I will ride my bike down a never-ending ribbon of asphalt wearing a backpack.”
Cory Mortensen began his bike ride across the United States from Chaska, Minnesota, to Truckee, California, without a route, a timeline, or proper equipment. Along the way, he gained more than technical skills required for a ride that would test every fiber of his physical being and mental toughness. Ride along as he meets “unusual” characters, dangerous animals, and sweet little old ladies with a serious vendetta for strangers in their town.
Humor ■ Insight ■ Adventure ■ Gratitude ■ Peace
From long stretches of road ending in a vanishing point at the distant horizon, to stunning vistas, terrifying close calls, grueling conditions, failed equipment, and joyous milestones he stayed the course and gained an appreciation for the beauty of the land, the genius of engineering and marvel of nature.
Excerpt:
CHAPTER 7 – DAY SEVEN – AUGUST 28, 2001
[image error]
Today’s Ride: Ogallala, Nebraska – Sterling, Colorado Today’s Distance: 90 Miles
Though the Oregon Trail Motel didn’t offer breakfast, it did have coffee and a stack of foam cups in the front office.
I wasn’t that hungry, still pretty bloated from the beer, noodles, and MSG I had for dinner.
Hanging around the motel sipping cups of watered-down coffee, watching as the sun rose over the dusty town, bustling with early morning activity, I waited for the coffee to do its trick before checking out.
When nature called, I preferred a bathroom with an abundant amount of toilet paper over squatting behind a tree. I waited on the curb outside my door.
Perhaps a conversation regarding bowel movements wasn’t classy this early in the morning, but real nonetheless. When you found yourself reading a book about someone biking cross-country, you might otherwise ask yourself: Where did they go to the bathroom whilst out on the open road?
If the sudden need to shit arose on the road, you could only hope there was a bush, tree, or berm to hide behind. The other option was to keep walking as far away from the road as you could until you were out of sight, or at least blurry. Of course, without the proper equipment (toilet paper), things could get messy. You might find yourself sacrificing a sock. Personally, I had a dresser drawer of mismatched cycling socks at home.
Public options, if you were lucky enough to be in a town or city when things started moving, were:
Restaurants: Now,  I would stay clear of anything fancier than  a Cracker Barrel. The best were fast food joints, as the bathrooms were typically really clean and out of sight of the counter (so you could get in and out without running into an employee).
Truck Stops: If you came across one of those truck stop fortresses like a BP or Bosselman, take it. Nobody would give you two looks, even if you were dressed in Lycra. The bathrooms were surprisingly clean, and there was typically an abundance of stalls.
Gas Stations: You knew you were in trouble when you asked the attendant for a key and he said the bathroom was outside around back. Check to see if there was any toilet paper in the room before starting. You might find rust stains on the sink and toilets surrounded by a lake of urine. The whole process would become an exercise in squatting. By no means did you want to make any sort of physical contact with anything in that room. Lift the seat with your shoe, flush the toilet with a hand wrapped liberally with a paper towel. It was probably best to find a tree.
So, you could see why I opted to wait before I left Ogallala.
Glimpse: The Dinner Guest, Book 5 – by Stephen B. King
Glimpse, the Dinner Guest
Amazon buy link: https://amzn.to/3m1RaA8
I have been asked many times, will there be more Glimpse stories?
During writing Glimpse, The Angel Shot, I believed it was to be a standalone story, and a finale for my characters, Rick, Pat, and Juliet. But, I am frequently reminded of the James Bond quote, “Never say never!”
In fact, there is now a Glimpse 5, called Glimpse, The Dinner Guest, released 13th of November 2020. This is a special project I was invited to submit a story to, and I was humbled to be selected. Me? an ego? Nah, surely not.
The rules seemed simple and interesting enough. 13 authors each publishing a dark thriller, of only 13000 words. It must feature a broken mirror, and use the words, Friday the 13th. I jumped at the chance to make my favorite all time character, Patricia Holmes take a starring role in a scary, stand-alone story, without her protector Rick McCoy to ensure she doesn’t get hurt again.
Here is the blurb:
[image error]Detective Sargent and clinical psychologist, Patricia Holmes, has been invited to a murder mystery dinner party at a small luxury hotel located in Western Australia. The dinner is a reunion party for the psychologists and psychiatrists who work at Perth’s largest mental hospital, which treats the criminally insane.
But there is an uninvited guest–a former patient who is hungry for revenge. In fact, he is ravenous. He will stop at nothing until he murders the doctor who gave him painful, electroconvulsive therapy.
Detective Sargent Holmes must stop a frenzied killer on a vicious spree—but can she save the other guests, or will she be the last one left alive?
Here is a short excerpt:
Pat knocked on the door of number ten and hoped she had caught Ruth before she went downstairs to the bar. From inside, she heard a muffled woman’s voice. “Can you get that, Tony,” The next moment, the door was yanked open, and a tall distinguished looking man wearing a tuxedo performed a double take when he saw her.
“Jesus Christ, are you all right?” he said with concern in his voice, and Pat realized the effect her slashed and bloody top had on him.
Pat gave a small laugh, which, when she glanced again at his face, grew louder, and threatened to become hysterical. “I’m fine, thank you. Dress scary, the invite said, so I did. I’ve got to say; your tuxedo isn’t scary at all. I’m Patricia Holmes and would like to have a few words with Ruth, if I can, before festivities get underway.”
He grinned and stepped back, beckoning with his head for her to enter. “Yeah, we don’t do fancy dress-ups, sorry. We’re far too dull in our old age. Come in. Ruth is applying her make up with a trowel. I’m Tony. I don’t think we’ve met?”
“Thanks, Tony, please call me Pat, everyone does. I left Graylands quite a while ago now, and even when I was there, I was only part-time. I consulted to the criminally insane, the lifers, worst of the worst. By all means, call me morbid. These days, I’m with the police.”
He pointed to the chair by the desk for her to sit then turned his head to the bathroom. “Hon, it’s Patricia Holmes. She wants a word with you before we go downstairs. Do you want me to hang around, or can I go down and mingle?”
Ruth Hawthorne stuck her head around the doorway with a lipstick clutched in her right hand. “Hello, Pat, bloody long time no see, how are you doing?” She turned her glance to her husband, “You can leave us girls. We can go down together. Is that all right, Pat? My God, I love your outfit.”
“Thanks, Ruth. I thought I’d have a bit of fun. Going down together works for me. I need a private chat anyway…”
“Sounds ominous. You get off, Tony. Pat joined the dark side and is with the police now, but I don’t think she is here to arrest me.”
Pat shook her head and smiled as Ruth disappeared back into the bathroom. Pat sat down on the seat to wait, and Tony acted like most people do around detectives; nervous and in a hurry to get away.
“Righto, see you downstairs. Nice to meet you, Mrs. Holmes.” He scampered out the door quickly, eager to either get away from her, find a strong drink, or both.
My crazy world of irony:
I love some of the ironies and humor, I created in this short story. Pat, who used to consult with murderers attends a murder mystery dinner, dressed as a murder victim and is the only police officer in the remote location to try to stop a murderer kill all the attendees. I found it funny to write that she is the only guest to use fancy dress as the invite instructed her to do. This once happened to me, many moons ago when I dressed up as Count Dracula, but the other fifty or so guests at the party wore ‘normal’ clothes. I felt like an idiot all night, though I did meet a woman who became a playmate for a while…She thought I was interesting.
In Glimpse 4, Patricia was shocked to learn that most of the other detectives in the Major Crime squad don’t want to partner her because she had been badly injured in two previous cases. In Glimpse 5, she must face a man suffering extreme paranoid schizophrenia, intent on ridding the word of as many psychologists as he can, and Pat is a psychologist.
Why a short story in the Glimpse series?
[image error]
I am reminded of the adage, less is more, and for writers, that means the less you say, the more impact it can have. So, the challenge for me was only writing 13000 words featuring a character I love writing for, when sometimes I could just write, and write and write… Then, before I know it, I’m approaching 100,000 novel limit. When I read through The Dinner Guest, as I have so many times now, I realize just how much I was able to say, with so few words, and I am thrilled with the result. I am tempted to perhaps write a few more short stories, or novellas for Pat, and Rick, in their own anthology. We shall see how Book 5 is received, and if there is a demand from my loyal reader.
Well, as I said earlier, never say never.
Thank you so much for having me on your blog, and the chance to chat about my Glimpse world.
When he lands on top of a woman in the midst of a brawl and snags a passionate kiss, he sparks a fire he never expected. But it doesn’t take the cowboy long to learn a lesson of his own… sometimes love comes with a price.
Seamstress Laurel Adams is embarrassed by Caleb’s stolen kiss. Though she is determined to raise her son alone, she wonders at the ease of falling for the handsome horseman. But when the husband who abandoned her returns, there is only one choice to make—the one that breaks her heart into tiny pieces.
Tag Line:
Torn between obligation and true love, Laurel must make a difficult choice.
Excerpt:
The businessman bolted forward and swung a fist that made contact with his chin, leaving him off balance and staggering backward. Trying to avoid the crowd that had collected he bobbled and went down, expecting to hit of the ground. But the impact never came. Instead he landed softly to a shrill feminine scream, and the greenest eyes he’d ever beheld.
Time simply froze, the world around him a haze as he found himself mesmerized by the beauty of the woman beneath him. It had been a damn long time since he was in such a position as this.
Unable to move with the crowd about them, he apologized allowing a slight smile to curl his lips, though he knew he should get back to the fight. He reached to tip his hat and realized he’d lost it. The feel of her bosom pressed between them stirred up a thing or two. “Beggin’ your pardon, Ma’am.”
“I’m quite all right.” She pushed to rise, but the crowd surrounding them was thick.
“Actually, I was apologizing for this.” Caleb bent to kiss her, slow and searing, her lips plump and tender, holding him there a moment longer than needed. He held her surprised green-eyed gaze a moment more and then he was back to the fight.
Glimpse 4 – The Angel Shot by Stephen B. King
Glimpse, the Angel Shot
[image error]
Book 4 in The Deadly Glimpses Series.
Amazon buy link: https://amzn.to/3n70Fif
Blurb:
Seven women have disappeared from bars only to be found murdered after asking for an Angel Shot. Detective Rick McCoy is handed the case after returning from leave following his wife’s horrific ordeal at the hands of the serial killer, PPP. Criminal psychologist Patricia Holmes lost her husband to the same killer and when her current partner makes her life miserable she jumps at the chance to work with Rick again. When they determine a man currently jailed for the crimes could not have committed them the mystery deepens.
But that is the least of Rick’s worries. An imaginary alter ego appears warning him his wife is suicidal. Will they be able to solve the riddle of the Angel Shot before another victim loses her life and save his wife from taking hers?
Two favorite passages:
“You have been busy, haven’t you? Thanks for interceding on my behalf. The thing is, I’ve been thinking of giving everything up and going back to lecturing. Besides, I won’t work with Pepperdick again, and apparently, all the other sergeants think I’m a liability and won’t partner with me.” She took another drink and looked back out of the window, blinking rapidly.
“Pat, you know as well as I do most cops are a superstitious lot. All you need is one more good investigation, one where you don’t get shot or stabbed, and there would be a long line of guys who would want you as their partner. Do you think if you had another chance, you could get through a whole case and not get wounded or slap your boss?”
She had been swallowing and choked as she laughed at his humor. “Depending who my boss would be, I could try,” she offered when she recovered, then turned her serious gaze on Rick’s.
****
“Yep. So, show me what you’ve got. Let’s say Brandon is not our killer. Have you got enough to profile who is?”
Pat made a pantomime of patting her pockets and looking around her, including under her chair. “What are you doing, Pat?” he asked, though he suspected what her answer would be.
“Oh, I was just looking for my magic wand; I thought I left it lying around here somewhere.”
They both laughed for a moment, and Rick’s heart swelled. They fitted together so perfectly. He shrugged, forcing the feelings down, which he had been doing with Pat for a long time.
“I don’t have much, Rick, but here are some thoughts.” She paused, composing her ideas. “People generally think rape is about having sex, yet we know often it’s not. That is the result, yes, but the cause is more about control, or even to some extent, sadism. Sometimes the rapist cannot achieve orgasm, which makes him more violent, so, we can postulate sex may not be a motivating factor; cruelty is. So, that’s the first point to consider. Second, not only was Ingrid Stapleton brutalized, but then strangled. Strangulation is a very hard, upfront, and personal way of murdering someone. Sometimes we see it in a case of domestic violence, where the killer is angry with someone else to the point of losing control. So, we can draw from that the man was angry with Ingrid, but why? On the face of it, Brandon O’Toole fits that description, he was rejected by her, and that could cause uncontrollable rage, rage enough to strangle, yes, but, in that case, not rape, do you see what I mean?”
Rick nodded slowly. “Yes, I think I do. If we are assuming O’Toole didn’t take Ingrid, then maybe the killer watched her in the bar, perhaps witnessed Ingrid’s altercation with O’Toole, and tried to rescue her. Possibly, he comforted Ingrid after O’Toole left and because he fancied her that could explain the Rohypnol and subsequent sexual assault. But why kill her by strangulation?”
Her brown-eyed gaze bored into his. “Rick, I think we are looking for someone in part with severe issues of anger and hatred toward women, yet in another way, he has a natural desire for them too. He couldn’t let her go because she would identify him. This man could have some sort of dissociative disorder, or dare I say even possible multiple disorder syndrome, and if that’s the case….”
“He’s killed before, or after. Jesus, Pat, you’re saying this could be a serial killer who got away with murder?”
****
Why did you write a Glimpse 4, wasn’t it meant to be a trilogy?
[image error]Well, yes, originally this was to be THREE deadly glimpses. I wanted to tell a story of inappropriate workplace desires and the effect on four people during three murder investigations of three different serial killers. I think in the same way good actors like a mini-series to be able to really portray a character, I wanted three books to tell the story with all the nuances two married people would feel who were attracted to each other. I believe I did tell that tale to the best of my ability, but after book 3, Glimpse, The Tender Killer was published, a groundswell of public and reader opinion made itself known by way of emails…..It seemed my readers, including my narrator, and editor wanted to know what happened to my characters next. Quite frankly, I was stunned by the response
I was genuinely flattered, but as a writer, I had ‘moved on’ and had other projects I was working on such as Winter at the Light, and a full re-write of Domin8, yet the calls for more continued. I truthfully never expected that, and was deeply moved that my characters struck such a chord with readers. But, still the ethos of the Glimpse series was to take the reader inside the minds of three separate serial killers and show why they were the they were, so to create a fourth instalment would require another killer, and that wasn’t so easy to do.
I am deeply fascinated by all things psychology, and in particular, what circumstances create the triggers which cause some people’s minds to fracture and create a serial killer. In Glimpse, The Angel Shot I use 3 quotes from one of America’s worst serial murderers, Ted Bundy, to give an indication how these types of people think:
“Murder is not about lust, and it’s not about violence. It’s about possession.”
“We serial killers are your sons; we are your husbands, we are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow.”
“What’s one less person on the face of the earth, anyway?”
For me, this is not only some of the most chilling words I have ever read, but deeply, and yes morbidly, interesting. So, for me to create another serial murderer for Patricia Holmes to profile, wasn’t easy, and it took some time to come up with the answer. My wife inadvertently came to my rescue when we were out one night at a social function and she said to me when she returned to the table, “You’ll never guess what is written on the back of the lady’s toilet door.” I looked up and joked, “Jeez, I hope it’s not my phone number advertising for a good time.”
Obviously, she is used to my warped sense of humor, and gave me a withering stare, until I asked her, “No, darling, what is on the back of the door?”
Her answer was like a bolt of lightning hitting me, and my two all-time favorite words came to mind: “What if…”
My loving wife gave me all I needed to create a man so troubled by his dysfunctional marriage he wants to rape and murder vulnerable women when they asked for help to be rescued from a troublesome date.
One thing about me readers may find interesting:
[image error]
I am fascinated by how the human mind can fracture and have a tremendous respect for psychologists, and psychiatrists who try to help patients put the pieces back together. A good friend, and his wife are both prominent psychologists, and my daughter has degrees in criminal psychology and justice. I often wish I had studied the subject myself, but at that age I was far more interested in rock music, free love, illegal substances, and telling stories. The Glimpse series is named that because in each book I try to offer the reader a look into the killer’s mind set, and offer an answer to the question most people want answering; why.
One thing about Glimpse 4 I think readers will find interesting:
A character named Jolly appears in Glimpse, the Tender Killer as the evil alter-ego of the schizophrenic serial killer, Bobby Cornhill, whom the media nickname, The Biblical Killer, because of the religious quotes written in blood on the victim’s walls. I received a lot of emails from readers demanding not only to bring him back, but asking the question, was Jolly a real entity or just a figment of Cornhill’s very troubled mind. While I loved creating this character, I was stunned that readers wanted more, and in Glimpse, the Angel Shot, Jolly features a lot more. This time one of the main protagonists, Rick McCoy sees, and talks to Jollly. The question again is: Is Jolly real, or is Rick slowly going insane?
Who is Jolly?
I am genuinely staggered by the number of readers who wanted to know more about my character, Jolly. I wanted the reader to wonder, is Jolly real, or just a figment of a very troubled mind? And boy, did they.
I loved Jolly, and felt I was crossing the border into the supernatural, as if I was writing like my more famous namesake. I put a lot of effort into making Jolly feel real to not only the murderer, but make the reader ask that question, is he somehow real and chooses who he appears to?
I had so many requests, when I sat down to write Book 4, The Angel Shot, I knew I had to bring Jolly back, and, I did with a vengeance. The hairs on the back of my neck still tingle when I read about Jolly, and I know what happens next! I hope those readers who wanted to see him again are satisfied, and they can finally decide if he is just imaginary, or somehow, a sentient character who chooses who he will appear to, and influence. How could he appear to Bobby and make him murder liars in an internet chat room, yet confront Rick McCoy and offer a lifeline to save Juliet, his wife? And, then, when Jolly appears to Juliet and offers a way to find solace, and help to keep her sanity, is he helping, or hindering her recovery?
Suffice to say, my beta readers, my editor and narrator, enjoy the juxtaposition that Jolly creates. While Rick worries, he is losing his mind, supposedly, all Jolly wants to do is save his wife’s sanity, and life.
Could such a thing actually happen? As Pat says to Rick when he finally admits to her he is seeing Jolly “We all need help at different times in our lives, sometimes more than others. Often, speaking about what is inside us helps our fears and anxieties dissipate by bringing them into the open and letting you examine them in the cold light of day. I can see Jolly seems real to you, which of course, he would, wouldn’t he? If it weren’t so real, you’d shrug it off and laugh. A psychosis, no matter how severe, is always real to the person experiencing it. It should never be shrugged off, laughed at, or ignored for that matter. You’ve been under more stress than anyone should have to bear, I’d be amazed if you didn’t come through it without some, shall we say, quirks. It doesn’t mean you’re mad or need locking up or can’t function as you are. But I think the first step for you is to understand why this is happening. Guilt is one of the most powerful motivators there is, and I think once you accept that, work with it instead of trying to fight it, you will see Jolly less and less.
Will Jolly appear in a future story?
Hmm, I am honestly not sure. From my perspective, he is a wonderful, rich character to write for. Intelligent, deep, and he keeps quoting the bible to suit any given situation. So, maybe he will. I’m not saying Jolly is appearing to me, but I sometimes, in the still of the night, hear him whispering to: “Stephen, bring me back…”
Thank you so much for having me on your blog, and the chance to chat about my Glimpse world.
Steve
Three Sisters by Susan Payne
With Three Sisters I went to the extreme of not only having three siblings who are loyal to one another, I had them all within age for love interests. An older sister who has had the care of the younger twins their entire lives makes the bond even tighter.  When different males catch the sister’s attentions, they are torn between remaining as the family they have always been or separate and possibly break one another’s hearts.  I wanted to share with you how I go about writing a story of close relationships being disrupted by another which will be as strong or stronger than the one a character may already have.
            Writing for more than one couple can be tricky and when those couples are also family members things can become even trickier.  Everyone must have their own personality which sometimes included manner of speaking.  Since family members, especially siblings speak alike, there should be some way of figuring out who is who without the author relating their name each time.
            I use pet names, often, between those who are close over a period of time. A nick-name for me connotes a bond whether it is an adult male to a child or one sibling for another.  Even if it isn’t the most loving nick-name as in brat, tag-along, or pokey.  Usually these names are used only between the two involved.
            Another method is if one is bossy while another more reticent. I keep them to their own personalities unless that character ‘grew or matured’ in some manner. It doesn’t mean the oldest is always in charge, but unless there is an outside force that changes things, I keep that character’s temperament the same.  Just as what happens in most families or group of friends.
            The trickiest separation of couples may be during love scenes.  No two couples make love the same way.  Go about things exactly alike.  Therefore, those changes per couple also depend on how in depth the author plans to go. I try not to make things too much the same and keep characters and couples within their personality parameters.
            Since I come from a large, noisy family who usually find ourselves shouting over one another and talking across one another in the same room, I have learned to follow one (or more) conversations at a time.  Writing, however, makes each character take their turn.  You can indicate bedlam, but a reader can only read one character speaking at a time. Again, I stick to each character’s traits and personality.
            Although it takes more time, I enjoy relaying what it was like to live in a home full of people and love.  Concentrating to only one couple with one or two other characters may make things easy for an author, but I find it too predictable.  Where is the angst if the reader has no way of not knowing who was going to end up with who or that it will be a happy ending?  I mean, it’s a romance so of course there’s going to be a happy ending. I need something to keep the interest going – and that, for me, happens to include the more the merrier.
“Tell me, what’s your name?” His deep timbered voice rumbled.
    “What’s yours?”
    “Devlin, Marshal Devlin.”
    “Ah-h-h, the Devil.  Well, I have heard of you Marshal Devil.  Aren’t you out of your usual territory?  I mean, I was told you only show up where there’s trouble or is it that trouble shows up where you are?” she asked, sipping the cup of coffee she poured for herself without offering him one. After all, he wasn’t an invited guest.  At least she hadn’t invited him.  She would be better off without his attentions, able to do what she was really there to do without the Devil getting in the way.
    “Come on, give me a name at least,” he coaxed.
    Hoping he would go away if she appeased him, she replied, “Call me Ginger, everybody else does.  Ginger Taylor.”
    “Hmmm, with those eyes and that hair, I’d think an ‘O’ should go in front of your last name, like O’Riley, or O’Brian,” he said twirling a ginger colored curl around his finger at her left temple.
            Ginger smiled and replied, “Anything you say, Marshal, but I have to get back to the floor or Maurice will be yelling for me.”
            “Tell Maurice you have a private game upstairs.  I can make it well worth your while,” Devil offered watching her reaction.
            He didn’t need to wait long.  She was up and pushing the door open into the casino before realizing she was going to move.
            Calling back, she said, “I don’t work above the main floor. If you want a game upstairs, Marshal, it will have to be solitaire.”   She left him standing in a room of laughing men.
A Very Witchy Yuletide by D. Lieber
Hello everyone! I’m delighted to be able to talk with author D. Lieber today. She is with us for an interview introduction. I’m sure you’ll enjoy learning more about A Very Witchy Yuletide and about the author. I’ll hand over the stage to D. Lieber.
What is your greatest temptation:
            In food: Anything that smells savory or sweet. At the moment, it’s apples because I can’t have them anymore.
            In clothes: Hats. I look adorable in them. I also love fun socks.
What is your greatest weakness (example: buying shoes)? Being drawn into arguments with someone who is not logical. You know what? My intolerance for lack of logic in general.
If you could have any kind of car, what would it be? I can’t drive. I’m visually impaired. So, I guess a self-driving one?
Your dream home – mountains or ocean? Mountains. But I like living in the Midwest. There are hardly any natural disasters to worry about comparatively.
What inspired you to become a writer? *shrugs* I didn’t really have a choice. The words have to get out. I only decide whether to share them or not.
Do you have a daily writing routine?  If so, please share. Yes and no. I write better in the mornings. Lately, I have been getting up, eating breakfast, writing a chapter (most of the time, I have to take a shower in the middle to think some plot or character problem through). I mentally slow down a lot in the afternoon. So, I try to get all my writing done before lunch.
What is your favorite book? The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
What is your favorite movie? Ugh…that is way too hard. I like too many. Action, adventure, comedy, musicals, anime, Bollywood, noir, classics, fantasy, sci-fi, superhero…too many. But anything by Mel Brooks is sure to be good.
Who is your favorite historical figure? Oooo you are asking me some tough ones. Hmm. Catherine the Great is pretty epic, though the serfs likely didn’t think so. There are a lot of historical figures I admire within the context of their own history. The problem with historical figures is that they are products of their times, so it is hard to judge them by modern standards. Napoleon, for instance, did amazing things. But then again, he reinstated slavery in some of France’s colonies. That’s obviously not okay. On that note, two of my most hated are Christopher Columbus and Charlemagne. Also, Thomas Edison was a jerk, too.
If you were given the opportunity to spend a day with any person, living or dead, who would it be? Robin Williams. It would likely be random and fun.
In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him? That’s a tough one. I really try to make my heroes crush-worthy. I have a favorite character in each of my books, so this is really hard. I’m going to have to go with Mitica. He is from Once in a Black Moon. He’s got a sad Superman vibe. He is a Fae wizard from Romania who is in Canada helping the First Nations and indigenous Fae as magic slowly dies around them.
Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her? I’m going to answer in just the books that are published so far. I’ll have to say Erin. She is also from Once in a Black Moon. She is a modern journalist who is thrust through time into 1900 western Canada. She is funny and spunky. She is caring, and she’s a pacifist.
Would you date your favorite hero/heroine? I would, but he would be disappointed. I’m not his soul mate. Some of my side male characters I would date though are Rowan from Intended Bondmates and Andrei from The Exiled Otherkin. Those boys need some love.
New releases anytime soon? Yes! I just released A Very Witchy Yuletide, and my dieselpunk sci-fi adventure, The Treason of Robyn Hood, will be coming out March 2021.
After four and a half years, Sawyer Collins finally has a chance to reconnect with his first love, Eeva Pendre. He might have been too shy to tell her how he felt before, but he’s changed. And he’s determined not to let her slip away this time.
As the coven prepares for Yule, they are reminded that not everyone has the holiday spirit in this contemporary Pagan holiday romance.
Excerpt:
Sawyer looked up just as Eeva stopped short upon entering the living room. She was still in her pajamas: flannel plaid pants with an oversized hoodie and fuzzy socks. Her long, brown hair was dyed a dark green, and it was still messy from sleep.
His heart throbbed in his chest, and he held his breath as he met her deep ocean blue eyes. His memories hadn’t done her justice.[image error]
“Hey,” he said lamely. “It’s uh…been a while.” He cleared his throat, his own voice sounding hoarse and uneven in his ears.
She blinked as if she’d forgotten who he was then frowned. “Yeah, I suppose that happens in life… How is…everything? I mean, I hope you and your mom are doing all right.” Her tone was distant and polite. Formal.
His stomach clenched as his raised hopes deflated. “Yeah, everything’s fine. We’re both good. And you?”
“Same.”
As the strained silence grew between them, Sawyer grasped for something to say. Anything. “So…my mom says you’re graduating soon. What are you studying?” He knew very well she was studying history. It didn’t matter that he’d said more times than he could count that he didn’t care. The moment his mother mentioned her, he’d always internalized the information. And he’d taken more than a few glances at her social media profiles over the years, though he’d gotten better about that.
“Eeva!” his mother called, entering the room before they could struggle on in their conversation.
[image error]Beyond her skeptic and slightly pessimistic mind, Lieber wants to believe. She has been many places—from Canada to England, France to Italy, Germany to Russia—believing that a better world comes from putting a face on “other.” She is a romantic idealist at heart, always fighting to keep her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds.
Lieber lives in Wisconsin with her husband (John) and cats (Yin and Nox).
