I’m not really fond of the ball-busting bitchy female support characters that only exist to make the hero’s life difficult. Or interrupt the bromance of the two leads. As in, I’m not fond of the way we’re supposed to find these characters aggravating and irritating, and hate them. Or how they’re not as competent as the male leads.
I’m not denying that the super competitive, angry women exist because God knows I’ve worked with a few terrifying as hell female bosses. But the reason these women are like that is because they work in a male dominated career and they’re always talked down to, found wanting, demeaned and mocked at every turn. So yeah, they’re gonna believe in attack as the best offence, they’re gonna smack the male leads down to prove who’s boss, they’re going to be perfectionists and demanding. And I wish the narrative would explore the reasons why instead of shoving them into the antagonist box and having done with it. Have these characters be the heroes of their own story, be competent and fan-fucking-tastic.
A side character who is in opposition to the lead is not necessarily the villain of the piece.
