Vicki Batman: Anything but snakes

Indy has it right-I hate snakes

On my way home from the craft store, I drove past the apartment complex I lived in with my BFF when we were free and single gals. The complex has been torn down and a huger new one is going up. Seeing the spot brought back a memory.
Once upon a time, we used to have a big parties and invite everyone we knew. Sometimes, the only place to stand was on the fireplace hearth. One year, her co-worker's boyfriend showed with a boa constrictor dangling over his shoulders.
The reptile was not invited.
I suggested he stay out by the pool with his "buddy" for the party. He did.
But that got me to thinking about other close encounters of the slinky kind.
As a kid: while picking blackberries at my aunt's farm, we were warned to "watch out for cottonmouths."As a kid: while swimming in a lake to "watch out for water moccasins."
As a teenager: while working at an amusement park, the foreman of a ride bashed a water moccasin at my feet.
As a mom: watching my son and friend leap over one in the middle of the road I had just used.

I think snakes are creepy and do know they do good as well as have defense mechanisms. I just don't want to be around when they feel compelled to do so.
How about you? Hate snakes?

Vicki Batman: What's in your closet? Why, it's Handbag Monday!

Handbag Monday!!
As I was leaving a wedding reception the other night, two friends comment on the handbag I carried:
They even asked where I bought it. LOL. <Silly girls.> It's vintage! Yep, found at a flea market for $3.00 years ago.
And doesn't it have a lovely classic design? I can see Audrey Hepburn carrying something like it.
This bag has no maker label inside. The fabric is some kind of faux patent leather. The handle is a cute boxy shape, gold frame, and the same fabric is on the handle. Inside, a zippered compartment divides the interior into three areas.
So what do you think? Too old for you? Very classy?
Happy handbag hunting.

Vicki Batman has been handbag shopping. Check out Handbag Monday

!!Handbag Monday!!
Most of you know about my love affair with vintage bags. So when this one popped up on ebay...
Confession: I couldn't resist.
And am I so glad I didn't. This little jewel came in the mail and I'm as pleased as a handbag girl could be.
I paid $20.00. It is in immaculate condition and a great size too. The flowery fabric goes with so many things and resembles tapestry.

I think I'm saying goodbye needlepoint beauty and hello to my new favorite.
Like this one? Vicki Batman, avid collector of handbags, is usually found writing something funny & romantic while sipping on a diet coke.

Blog: Vicki Batman-It's Handbag Monday!

Handbag Monday!

Last week, I went to a shower and thought I'd wear a white-ish sweater, slacks, black loafers. So I went looking for a handbag. My eyes landed on this dotted beauty. I LOVE dots!!

I remember I bought it online. Picked the style and fabric. Even the black handle. Then it was shipped. Squee!

And it goes great with the dotted scarf in the same colors.

Happy Handbag Day!

Blog: Vicki Batman-Stinky Cheese?

Stinky Cheese?
A while back, I told a girlfriend I was in a rut. I wanted to do some new things. Here's some ideas we explored:
Tatting-need more lessons.Mah jongg-still learning, but have improved.Basketweaving-class cancelled.Crochet-liked, but went back to needlepoint.Basic Plumbing-shall try when offered again.
But when this one caught my eye, I was all over it in a heartbeat. Cheesemaking 101.
The only thing I knew about cheese is eating it. But this store and the founder has a world-wide reputation. The Julia visited here. The cheese is served on American and Virgin airlines. The best restaurants use it.
The company is located in a reviving area of town. Part of the 100 year-old tile floor is in the entry. We signed our names, got aprons, hairnets, washed hands. The class, led by the founder and owner, started with the company's history. Then, we toured the facility with her describing the various cheeses in the cooler.
It all began with milk poured in a double boiler. The class cut in half lots and lots of lemons. Using a reamer, we got out the juice which was strained and poured into the double boiler. A few minutes later and some stirring--abracadabra--we had ricotta.
I'm not kidding. It was like magic.

Hey! don't laugh at the girl in the hairnet. lol

After the ricotta was scooped and stowed in containers, we were showed three kinds of mozzarella which began with mozzarella curds-- balls, string cheese, and olive loaf.
We chopped the curd, kneaded it into bits, added hot water, strained and pulled the cheese as she had. Afterwards, the class participated in a wine and cheese tasting. We took home our goodies, too.
I had a blast getting out of my rut and expanding in this way.
What are you doing that's new and interesting? Want to try Plumbing 101 with me?

Blog: Vicki Batman-Wanna peek in my closet? Handbag Monday

Handbag Monday
A new venture on Handbags, Books, Whatever…
Too often, I blog about books and a lot about whatever. A sweet friend told me to write about handbags too! I'm certainly no expert.  I have handbags that date back to *cough* high school. I like something different than the current garbagebag-sized ones on the market nowadays.
So once a month on a Monday, I'll be posting a picture of what this bon vivant about town is toting.
This month, our featured presentation is a lovely vintage Margaret Smith of Gardiner, Maine creation.

I found it on eBay and had to have for two reasons:
1/It's pink!!! I mean P-I-N-K!2/It's a Margaret Smith.
Made of a slubby linen fabric, matching handle that glides over my arm, a vintage clasp, and roomy enough for all my girly stuff. There's a small zippered pocket on the inside, too. And a special note: VB swag.
This beauty goes will lots of my springtime outfits, even making the same ol' same ol' jeans and tee look special.

Vicki Batman-What's in your Sneak Peek Sunday?

http://sneak-peek-Sunday.blogspot.com

Let's *peek* at
Blurb: When a young woman plans a romantic getaway with her boyfriend, disaster strikes, and she soon finds Mr. Right could be someone else.

My boyfriend is a dirt wad. I just decided.          With a humpf, I dragged my pink tote up the narrow aisle to the plane's exit, accidentally banging it into the seats along the way. The relieving notion of being back home in Sommerville caused the tension in my chest to fade a smidgen.           A quick peek to the exit told me where Davis, my boyfriend, stood waiting for the okay from the ground crew to head out. His glance my way didn't look at all pleasant. Similar to one wrapped in disappointment with a downward tilt of his mouth.          I didn't care much. I just decided.          The words creep, jerk, moron, and “why in the hell am I still dating him??” jumbled my thoughts around. My heart pounded as anxiety ratcheted inside me again.          Maybe I shouldn’t. Maybe I should not put up with him anymore.           The deepest part of me knew I shouldn’t be with Davis Griffith Swansea, III any longer. I was just in denial. Over the past year, I’d had brief, momentary twinges of dumping him; then, he’d go and do something incredibly romantic like bring me Godiva chocolates—“I know how you love these.” Or buy me a new book by my favorite author—“I happened to see this today.” Or whisk me off to an intimate dinner à deux at the latest and greatest bistro--"I know you'll like this place."          My head had gone stupid.

Not your NORMAL April Fool's Day

Not the normal April Fool's Day
Let me tell you a fairy tale about a handsome prince (Handsome) and beautiful girl (Beautiful)

Handsome loved Beautiful so much, he proposed to her.
She said yes. Afterwards, he departed on a plane for work. Beautiful skipped off to her apartment with giddy sensations rolling through her body.

And then...reality dawned.
Beautiful sat on the edge of her bed. Handsome had proposed on April Fool's Day. Had he really meant what he'd asked? Was this some kind of wacky joke? After all, he did make a fashion faux pas when he wore a sweater in July (very hot) and a flannel shirt (very warmish) in May. Maybe he was as weird as his clothing choices--except for the suits and the form-fitting jeans.
Beautiful had a fitful night with lots of tossing and turning.
The next day, Handsome returned from his trip and was greeted enthusiastically by her. Over dinner, she summoned up courage to say, "I was wondering… Did you mean what you asked last night?"
"Last night?"
She waved her fork, "You know..."
"Oh. You mean my proposal." His grin showed off his dimples. "Did you change your mind?"
"No, I was just curious because… Well, because yesterday was..." Beautiful lowered her voice to almost a whisper, "April Fool's Day."
"I get it. You thought I was joking."
She bit her lower lip. "Mmm..."
Handsome rose and bent to her, brushing her mouth with his. "I meant every word."
Beautiful stroked his cheek. Happiness spilled with the tears from her eyes. "Good." Handsome sat down and replaced the napkin in his lap.

She asked, "So would you mind…"
"Mind what?"
"Asking me again? Just to be sure."
Handsome picked up her hand, his thumb smoothing over her fingers. "Beautiful, will you marry me?"
"Yes."
They smiled, kissed again, and live happily ever after.
