Handbag and Book welcomes author Sue Pepper - Is your bag fancy? Is it in style? And her newest mystery

About the Handbag:

My handbag isn’t fancy. It’s worn and frayed, and I’m not sure it’s in style anymore. I found it at Target when my oldest son was a baby, and I’ve used it off and on ever since. Recently, I dug it out of the box it had lived in since our last move, because despite its wear and age, it had one undeniable quality I needed:

It’s huge. Big enough to contain the multitudes that are me right now.

It holds my laptop, my pens, my earbuds, my ready-to-be-proofed manuscript, my moleskin notebooks scribbled with plot ideas and reminders on what to check during edits.

It holds a diaper changing kit for my potty training toddler. It holds snacks and fidget toys and iPad chargers and even more snacks. It holds multiple sets of clothes because potty training toddler. It carried soccer cleats during soccer season, and toted our Elf on the Shelf, Snowflake, in secret over Christmas.

It holds a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, and tea cup in an effort to keep myself hydrated. A granola bar and a tube of lip balm. Occasionally I throw my makeup bag in, for the rare occasion I’m doing more than shuttling kids from stop to stop all day.

My handbag may not be fancy, but it fits my life as a stay at home mom and author of not so cozy mysteries for millennials, and for that, I love it.

About the Book:

Things are heating up…

Sadie Moose is enjoying a romantic evening in a snowy moonlit hot spring with her new boyfriend when a dead body floating in the pool interrupts their steamy interlude.

Yes. Another dead body. But she is absolutely not getting involved this time. She has enough to do with a business expansion underway, her new renters, and her new relationship.

Except the chief suspect is the troubled grandson of one of the regulars at her bakery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She promises she’ll ask some questions to keep him out of jail. And then her new barista is a neighbor of the deceased, and she’s having a hard time sleeping thinking someone in her tight-knit neighborhood is a murderer. So Sadie asks a few more questions.

Soon, she’s embroiled in the investigation, with danger lurking around every snowy corner. With help from her sexy boyfriend, rowdy bakery crew, a maybe-mob-princess, and her trusty canine companion, Tyrone, Sadie must clear the mist surrounding this mystery, before the killer boils her, too.

About Author Sue Pepper:

Sue Pepper writes cozy mysteries in the Pacific Northwest where she lives with her two kids, fuzzy yellow dog, and real life action hero husband. A former resident of Jackson Hole, WY pushed out by the billionaire-caused housing crisis, she enjoys writing revenge and redemption for the fictional residents of her Jackson Hole Moose's Bakery Not So Cozy Mystery series.

Handbag and Book welcomes author Ellie Gray: Her favorite 'everyday' bag and her book, Love on the Nile

About the Bag:

This is my ‘everyday’ handbag, and I love it! It’s very much my kind of style – black, relatively smart but still casual. I bought it when I was with my daughter, who is very much a handbag kind of person, and she loved it too. It is from River Island and is a suede effect material.

I love it because it’s that in between size – just big enough to carry everything I need and still have space for any small bits and bobs I might purchase when I’m out and about. It has a really handy long zip pocket at the front – perfect for my keys and face mask (unfortunately now an essential piece of kit) which gives me easy access without having to rummage inside the bag itself. Inside, there is a small inside zipped pocket which I use for lip balm, tablets, etc., and then two open pockets just for bits and bobs – nail file, tweezers, etc. That leaves plenty of room inside for my purse, phone, notebook, hairbrush, perfume, re-usable/foldable shopping bag etc.

I’m not a big ‘handbag person’ myself, so when I buy a bag, I need to really love it, and with this one, I do!

About the Book:

Enjoy an exotic trip down the Nile River, the holiday of a lifetime, and a man who believes he is cursed!

Natasha embarks upon the holiday of a lifetime with her brother, looking forward to exploring the ancient sites Egypt has to offer. What she hasn’t bargained for is spending her holiday cruising along the Nile with Kyle Richardson, a handsome but moody archaeologist. Despite taking an instant dislike to Kyle, Natasha finds herself increasingly drawn to the man, particularly as his interactions with her brother reveal a gentler, more caring side to his character.

Having lost everyone he has ever loved, Kyle is a loner, believing himself to be cursed. He now spends his life moving around Egypt, ensuring he never lingers anywhere long enough to form meaningful attachments. Despite his better judgement, he finds himself drawn to this feisty young woman, but is afraid of the deeper feelings she stirs in him.

Can his feelings for Natasha convince him that it’s worth taking a risk on love?

About Ellie Gray, Author:

I love to write heartwarming, contemporary romance, and romantic suspense novels, with characters I really want my readers to engage with. I live in the beautiful East Riding of Yorkshire in the UK and, although I work full-time in the public sector, my favourite pastime, when not writing, is wandering around old stately homes and castles, or sitting at a pavement café in the sun and watching the world go by – always on the lookout for something that might spark the idea for my next novel. I enjoy engaging with both readers and other authors and am a proud member of the Romantic Novelist Association. Feel free to contact me and chat about all things romance through my social media pages, which you can find on my website.

Handbag and Book welcomes author Alana Lorens and her book - A Rose by any Other Name

About the Handbag: Author Alana Lorens doesn’t care that much about handbags, just using what’s utilitarian. But the heroine of A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME, Marisol Herrera Slade, has this bag that she just loves. It’s purple, of course, which is one great thing about it. It has a few small pockets inside for her peach-colored lipstick. But the sequins!

She’s never used it out in public, just because she doesn’t live that life. But her blog avatar, Jerrika Jones? Now she’s got attitude, and she’d flash this bag around like a queen.

Marisol bought the purse at a secondhand store and has it hanging on the back of her closet door, right where she can see it while she’s creating her weekly columns at Mothering Without a Man. It’s such an inspiration! She hopes one day to be successful enough with her writing that she will always be invited to parties and events where she can take this glorious bag.

About the Book:

Up-and-coming mommyblogger and single mom Marisol Herrera Slade returns to her old hometown in western Pennsylvania for her 20th high school reunion in 2005, reluctant and yet compelled to see her high school sweetheart, Russell Asher, who dumped her for the homecoming queen.

Russell's marriage to the golden girl, however, ended in a nasty divorce, and he has been systematically excluded from his sons' lives. In his Internet wanderings, he's found feminist blogger named Jerrika Jones, who glorifies single motherhood, essentially putting a stamp of approval on what's happened to him. His group of single dad advocates have vowed to take this woman down.

What Russell doesn't know, when he thinks to rekindle what he had with Marisol, is that Marisol and Jerrika are one and the same. When his group discovers the truth, will their drive for revenge derail any chance the couple have to reunite? Or will they find they have more in common than they ever expected?

About the Author:

Alana Lorens has been a published writer for more than forty years, after working as a pizza maker, a floral designer, a journalist and a family law attorney. Currently a resident of Asheville, North Carolina, the aging hippie loves her time in the smoky blue mountains. She writes romance and suspense as Alana Lorens, and sci-fi, fantasy and paranormal mystery as Lyndi Alexander. One of her novellas, THAT GIRL’S THE ONE I LOVE, is set in the city of Asheville during the old Bele Chere festival. She lives with her daughter on the autism spectrum, who is the youngest of her seven children, and she is ruled by three crotchety old cats, and six kittens of various ages.

Answer these questions:

DonnaRae Menard blogging at Handbags, Books...whatever - The Trebiditious New Year

 The Trebiditious New Year
by DonnaRae Menard

'Twas the week after Christmas,

And just as I fear,

I can see it advancing,

the publishing New Year.

There'll be deadlines and queries,

submissions galore,

Re-writes and redlines,

each insidious chore.

A publisher demanding,

because it is due,

A manuscript finished,

before, I am not through.

The editor's trimming,

Leaving red circle and dot.

He slices out verbs,

regardless of plot.

The cover is shown,

glossy and sweet,

My name is misspelled,

but the rest of it's neat.

I don't get the formatting,

and don't really care.

I just want a reader,

My prose with to share.

What happened to writing?

The inspirational part?

I've thought of some stories,

I can't wait to start.

I've dreamed up a villain,

so vile and so dirty.

A hero, a partner,

and a girlfriend so flirty.

There'll be murder and mayhem,

a car crash and heist.

A dog-napping duo,

two corgis enticed.

Or a baker, a chef,

a cooker of treats,

with a freezer jam-packed

with illegal meats.

I'll reinvent grammies,

and an uncle or two,

A herring, so red,

to throw in the stew.

A cozy, a fairy,

a thriller, and more.

I just need an agent,

to knock on each door.

Just leave me in peace,

with my paper and pen.

Send a check in the mail,

About the Book:

After 10 years gone, Katelyn Took returns home in 1974 to find the grandmother who raised her dead under mysterious circumstances. Katelyn is ready to cut and run away from the now dilapidated farm, but Gram left her responsible for seventeen cats and a crazy old woman who still lives in the farmhouse. With no money to go, Katelyn takes a job at the feed store and a part-time gig as animal control officer, hoping to save enough to run again. But time is a funny thing. It raises memories, strengthens the heart, and sometimes brings something new into your life, adding confusion. It also allows the world to find you. Who’s watching from the bushes, ready to attack? Who’s going to walk away, Katelyn or the killer? The anger she felt towards Gram fades, replaced by grief and loss. Katelyn takes a temporary job working beside Grandpa's friend. She develops a romantic interest in the Deputy Sheriff, and just when she decides it doesn't matter because she's leaving town, a stalker makes her a target. The need to run isconstantly challenged by the anger at having what is hers yanked away. Is she going to stay? Continue her new romance? What about old friends who are new again and rallying around her? What price is she willing to pay to be a big city girl?

REVIEWS - Kassandra Lamb - Author of the Kate Huntington Mysteries, said;“The vivid descriptions of the characters and settings were great. Can't wait for the next one.”

Carl Glickman – Author of the Trembling Field, said;“Your dialogue, both spoken and internal, shine throughout...both very funny and at the same time suspenseful, this is hard to do and you do it well.”

About Donna Rae Menard:

DonnaRae's writing career began in the seventh grade with descriptions of other students. It was also her introduction to public speaking and the start of her training for the one hundred yard dash in track and field.

There were diaries, journals, two tiny columns in small-town newspapers, competition pieces for Toastmaster's International, and boxes under her bed filled with novels.

She currently lives just outside of town in the type of place where people feel free to drop off cats, kittens, cages of gerbils or white rats, and even the occasional farm animal.

Her first traditionally published novel, Murder in the Meadow, was released in August, 2021. In July 2022, the second novel of the Katelyn Took, It's Never Too Late series will be available. Murder on Eagle Drop Ridge. Also coming in 2021 will be a fantasy Waif and Warlord with Metal and Magic Publishing.

It's Snuggle Time! Holiday Movies

TIME TO INDULGE - HOLIDAY MOVIES!
Hopefully, some of you will find time to indulge in holiday movies. To hold a special beverage and snack, snuggle on the couch (possibly with friend or family), and immerse.
I've already begun. Recently, I watched "The Shop Around the Corner," which became a mega hit with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in "You've Got Mail." I found it interesting to hear some of the same dialogue lines and scenes.

I have others I watch. Here's my list and feel free to add to it:

"It's a Wonderful Life" - The brother's tribute: "To George. The richest man in town." Yes, I sob.

"Star in the Night" - I highly recommend. Academy award-winning nativity story set in an auto-court. Available on Youtube.

"Millions" - Danny Boyle, the director of "Slumdog Millionaire," directed this one before his award-winner.

"Stalag 17" - if you "Die Hard" fans can claim that's a holiday movie, I add this one set in WW2.
"The Bishop's Wife" - Cary Grant.
"Charlie Brown Christmas" - who else cries during "Hark the Herald Angels Sing?"
"Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer" - I am partial to the "Misfit" song.
"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" - The Grinch is nasty and gets a nasty song - "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" cause he's a nasty wasty skunk.
"Miracle on 34th Street" - I miss it not airing after Macy's Parade. And the cane scene at the end is priceless.

"Christmas in Connecticut" - Lots of lies twist up the heroine and unroll into romance. "I'm tired." LOL.

"Love Actually" - Billy the rock star is hilarious. I love the sign scene, too.

"White Christmas" - "Sisters" is a favorite song of me and my sisters. But the scene at the end when snow is falling and the cast is singing "White Christmas" - sob.
Like I said, please feel free to share your favorites!

In case you crave simply delightful, Sommerville holidays and Sommerville holidays too are available at a new low price.

Favorite Book and Book welcomes author J. Arlene Culiner

 My Favorite Book

A favorite book of all time? One favorite book? Impossible. There are so many books I love. But today I’ll choose one that I have often re-read: Crome Yellow by Aldous Huxley.

Set in an English country house just after the First World War, this wonderfully satirical novel is not a romance. It’s more the story of romantic failure, and there isn’t much of a plot — Denis Stone a young poet comes to Crome hoping he will be the center of attention and win the heart of the lovely Anne Wimbush. Soon enough, however, he realizes that the witty anecdotes he has prepared beforehand interest no one, and that Anne is far more attracted to the passionate artist Gombauld. Depressed and miserable, Denis invents a reason for returning to London, and when it is too late to do anything about it, he realizes that Anne’s isn’t as indifferent as he thought.

Crome Yellow transports me to another time, to a dreamy, leafy summer in a countryside that has vanished, to a way of life that no longer exists. I appreciate the absurdity of the different characters, people quite as silly as many we meet today—the pompous Mr. Barbecue-Smith, who writes 1,500 words an hour after getting in touch with his subconscious; Priscilla Wimbush with her obsessive interest in spirituality and astrology; the profligate Ivor Lombard who seduces rather silly Mary Bracegirdle. And it is Henry Wimbush, owner of Crome who, in his flight from the present, comes up with one of my favorite lines in literature: “Adventures and romance only take on their adventurous and romantic qualities at second-hand. Live them, and they are just a slice of life like the rest.”

Yes, there are long passages of tedious philosophical dialogue between Messrs. Barbecue-Smith and Scogan, and I do tend to skip over them. But Huxley’s gentle humor and exquisite writing style—people don’t write like that anymore—make this a book I will continue to come back to.

My Own Book Romance with characters who have a sense of humor, and a whole supporting cast of perfectly absurd characters.

The instant Sherry and Carston meet, there's desire and fascination in the air...but they're complete opposites. Smart-talking Sherry Valentine has fought her way up from poverty to stardom as a country music singer. Now, ever in the limelight, ever surrounded by clamoring fans, male admirers, and paparazzi, her spangled cowboy boots carry her from one brightly lit stage to the next. But Sherry’s been on the star circuit for far too long now, and she wants a change: is it too late for her to begin an acting career?

A renowned, but reclusive playwright, Carston Hewlett cherishes his freedom, the silence of the deep woods surrounding his home, and his solitary country walks. Long-term commitments have been out of the question for many years, so why is he so fascinated by a flashy country music singer? Perhaps a very short, but passionate, fling will resolve the problem.

When their names are linked in the scandal press, and Sherry's plans to become an actress are revealed, Carston is furious. Is their budding relationship doomed?

Red, White or Blue? Um…it all depends…

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter? They all work for me.

Cake or Pie? Neither—no sweet tooth. But give me fresh fruit or something spicy or sour or covered in herbs and I’m yours.

Coffee, Tea, or Champagne? I’d say champagne, except who wants to drink champagne at six in the morning (unless the situation is very unusual)? How about if I say I like all of them, coffee, tea and champagne?

Country music or Michael Buble? Oops. Neither. I’m a classical music lover (and musician).

Pencil or Pen? Depends on what I’m doing: writing a check or making notes on an orchestral partition.

Merry Christmas! Holiday short stories abound in Sommerville holidays and Sommerville holidays too

I love to write short stories, and I have had a lot published. I'm often asked where I get my ideas. Ideas abound! I've written stories based on a picture, on what someone said, on what popped in my head.

Several years ago, I collected six in two books--Sommerville holidays and Sommerville holidays too. Now, they are on sale-$1.99! Lots of ooey gooey fun! Here's a bit about them:

Hopes and wishes and holiday kisses...Sommerville holidays

Holiday Disaster: Days before Christmas, a librarian experiences plumbing issues and visits from Mr. Maintenance Man who isn’t nearly as jolly as Santa Claus.

The Littlest Angel: Two people. One ornament for the tree. Can a twosome find common ground and discover the true meaning of Christmas?

Holiday Handbag Extravaganza: Christmas Countdown is on! A hunk-a-licious customer pesters a boutique owner to locate a vintage handbag for his mother. Too bad the wedge between them is his sister, the meanest girl in town.

Love blossoms in the small town of Sommerville too in these heartwarming holiday tales, filled with fun and forever possibilities.

The Great Fruitcake Bake-off: When a five-time baking champion teams up with her new neighbor for The Great Fruitcake Bake-off, they discover baking a prize-winning entry is complicated, bad guys are plotting to take the crown, and first prize isn't just about a ribbon.

Christmas Romeo: When two feuding co-workers win Christmas river cruises at the company holiday party, they discover each other isn’t so bad after all.

Twinkle Lights: When the owner of a Christmas tree stand has a heart attack, a do-gooder and a reformed high school delinquent turned lawyer meet the challenges of running the establishment; yet, when revenue goes missing, fingers are pointed.

Handbag and Book welcomes author Ruth A. Casie

 About the Handbag:

Yes, this is a red handbag. It has a shoulder strap and actually hangs horizontally. As you can see, the black embossed design indicates it is a book of spells and potions. It was a gift from my good friend and author, Julie Rowe.

Julie and I are book twins. Our first published books were released by the same publisher on the same day. We ‘found’ each other at our publisher’s room at an RWA conference and have been close friends ever since. Even though she lives in the far reaches of Alberta Canada and I’m in New Jersey, five miles out of New York City we keep in touch and beta read for each other.

The design was very apropos. Julie was a medical lab technologist and is my ‘go to’ person for potions and herb remedies for my series, The Stelton Legacy. We spent lots of time plotting and planning the potions and even some spells. That year, this was my holiday present. The handbag is black on the inside and has a zippered divider so you can find things.

About the Book:

Her mind kept telling her to stop loving him, but her heart couldn’t let him go.

The two authors take on a writing challenge based on a story of stolen gold taken from the newspaper headlines all to determine the better writer. While researching the story, Lady Alicia is captured by the thieves’ ringleader. Can Lady Alicia turn this mystery into an award-winning story? Can Justin save his real-life heroine? Can they both overcome their own challenges for a happily ever after?

About the Author: RUTH A. CASIE writes swashbuckling action-adventure stories about strong empowered women and the men who deserve, endearing flaws and all, have won her acclaim. A USA Today bestselling author, her novels have finaled in the NJRW Golden Leaf, Reader’s Crown, InD’Tale’s RONE, and Aspen Gold contests. Ruth lives in New Jersey with her husband, three empty bedrooms and a growing number of incomplete counted cross-stitch projects. Before she found her writing voice, she was a speech therapist (pun intended), client-liaison for a corrugated manufacturer, and vice president at a leading international bank, but her favorite job is the one she’s doing now—writing romance. Answer these questions:

Red, White or Blue?  Definitely red. The other colors are too quiet for me.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter? Each of these seasons have their appeal. I enjoy the cold weather as long as I’m inside by the fireplace, hot cup of something nearby and reading or writing. In the warm weather I like to be on the deck or by a pool with an ice cold drink reading or writing. I love the Spring with everything blooming. But my favorite is Fall. I love the crisp (not cold) air and the colors. I love the colors.

Cake or Pie? Cake, Angel Food with strawberries and whipped cream

Coffee, Tea, or Champagne? COFFEE in the morning is a must, but it’s tea the rest of the day.

Country music or Michael Buble? Michael Buble!

Pencil or Pen? Pen
