Handbag and Book with author Judy Penz Sheluk - Where There's a Will, a #newbook , and an everything you need bag #accessories #mystery

I’m an unabashed fan
of Lug products, and this Puddle Jumper Duffle has everything you need for a weekend away (and it fits under an airplane seat, if we ever get flying again).

There are pockets for your e-reader, tablet, phone, glasses, water bottle, paperbacks, notebooks, two pen holders, and more, not to mention oodles of space in the interior. Plus, it comes in all sorts of fun colors. I bought black (I know, dull) because it matches my luggage (also dull). A gift from my mother-in-law, I LOVE my Puddle Jumper Duffle.

Emily Garland is getting married and looking for the perfect forever home. When the old, and some say haunted, Hadley house comes up for sale, she’s convinced it’s “the one.” The house is also perfect for reality TV star Miles Pemberton and his new series, House Haunters. Emily will fight for her dream home, but Pemberton’s pockets are deeper than Emily’s, and he’ll stretch the rules to get what he wants.

While Pemberton racks up enemies all around Lount’s Landing, Arabella Carpenter, Emily’s partner at the Glass Dolphin antiques shop, has been hired to appraise the contents of the estate, along with her ex-husband, Levon. Could the feuding beneficiaries decide there’s a conflict of interest? Could Pemberton?

Things get even more complicated when Arabella and Levon discover another will hidden inside the house, and with it, a decades-old secret. Can the property stay on the market? And if so, who will make the winning offer: Emily or Miles Pemberton?

More about Judy Penz Sheluk: A former journalist and magazine editor, Judy Penz Sheluk is the author of two mystery series: the Glass Dolphin Mysteries and the Marketville Mysteries. Her short crime fiction appears in several collections, including The Best Laid Plans and Heartbreaks & Half-truths, which she also edited. Judy is a member of Sisters in Crime, International Thriller Writers, the Short Mystery Fiction Society, and Crime Writers of Canada, where she serves as Chair on the Board of Directors.

Blog: Handbag & Book with author Vicki Batman - Thanksgiving Disaster stories and a #rafflecopter #Thanksgiving #shortstories #Christmas

There’s nothing that qualifies more than no turkey as a disaster—right? That’s what happened when my favorite smoked turkey vendor burned. And it is super sad for the company. However, when I heard the news, I got online and found a replacement. I was a little anxious as I had had no confirmation from the new vendor. A quick call and all is okay.

We have had other interesting things happen on Thanksgiving—like an ice storm. We left for my aunt’s house before the road got bad and returned home after they had been sanded.

Or the year #2 son decided to use the oven in the garage apartment to bake his famous mac ‘n cheese which was being used by my sister for her hubby’s awesome potato dish and her lemon meringue pie. Yeah, too many things in one small oven means something wasn’t quite done.

I’ve become an oven dictator. No baking at my house on Thanksgiving day. Bring your dish ready to serve with a serving utensil. Admittedly, makes preparation easy on me especially hosting up to 25 people. (Not this year. ☹)

And in the midst of the Thanksgiving fun, I’m launching a book. The book and I are on tour at these spots:

November 16: T's Stuff
November 17: Unabridged Andra's
November 18: Christine Young
November 19: Westveil Publishing
November 19: Straight From the Library

November 27: Viviana MacKade
November 30: Dawn's Reading Nook
December 1: It's Raining Books
December 2: Hope. Dreams. Life... Love
December 3: Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!
December 4: All the Ups and Downs

Be sure to stop by and join the rafflecopter for a fab handbag, books, chocolate, and whatever else I find.

In the meantime, may your Thanksgiving be rich and wonderful. VB

Handbag and Book welcomes author Fiona McGier and her book, The Right Choice, plus she's sharing a favorite handbag #accessories #handbag #newbook

This has been my everyday purse
for the past year. My birthday is in December. Every year one of my sons gives me a gift card to Vera Bradley. I LOVE the bright patterns and the quilted look of her things.  I don't really like leather bags. I prefer something I can machine wash if I need to. I also have a much larger bag that holds folders and other things I need for when I sub in high schools.

I really like my tiny purse because I can remove the longer strap, attach the wrist one, and pop it into my bigger bag when I sub. That way I don't have to remember where I put two things when I'm moving from one classroom to another during the school day. I chose the dark blue color because I liked the style of purse it was, and the other color was black.  Navy goes with everything.

I'm not a very feminine female. I don't own any makeup. I don't wear nylons--ever. I rarely wear dresses. And I don't own any heels. I have gold earrings because I'm too lazy to change them, so I leave them in all of the time. For years I had fanny packs, until they went out of style. I actually saw some fanny packs in the Vera Bradley store last year!  The sales girl said they're becoming trendy again. But I'm happy with my tiny purse--it holds what I need.

Despite its small size, my purse holds my IDs, my car and medical insurance cards, my credit cards, and a plastic holder with a picture of each of my two grandsons. It also has band-aids and safety pins, since you never know when you'll need one. It holds Tums, in case my stomach acts up. And it holds a few bills and some change. I also carry some of my author-business cards, and some of them have a button attached that says, "Reading is sexy." I put my phone into the outside front pocket. I put my keys in my jeans pocket and I'm good to go!

Veterinarian Pamela Wilson always used to run away from home to get attention from her status-conscious, preoccupied parents.  Years ago she met a man who loved her unreservedly, but her parents didn't approve of his blue-collar job, so she ran away from him too.  When the ambitious lawyer she's marrying answers a phone call while she's walking down the aisle, it's the last straw!  She runs away again, this time to a cabin her parents don't know about, owned by the mechanic.  Does he still own it and is he still single?  Will she finally stop running away and make the right choice for her future?

Who is Fiona McGier? I sub in high schools during the school year.  Otherwise, I'm writing and blogging about my books--and reading.  Not only do I write erotic romance, I love to read it too. I often read while camping with my long-time HEA.  Our four adult kids sometimes join us. Shinrin-yoku is forest bathing in Japanese, and as long as there's no snow on the ground, that's what I'll be doing--as often as possible.

I also enjoy sewing--mostly masks these days-- crocheting afghans to keep my loved ones warm, and baking--cookies, muffins, and especially pies. I'm known for my never-fail pie crust, so I put the recipe on my website under the pies tab, along with some of my family's favorites, that I featured in one of my books that had a heroine who baked lots of pies.

Answer these questions:

Red, White or Blue?  Navy, so I guess blue.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter? Summer--when camping is the best!

Chocolate pudding, cake, pie?  Pie. I make a great chocolate pudding pie!

Coffee, Tea, Champagne? Ooh, tough one. Coffee in the am, Champagne after 5.

Country music or Michael Buble? Neither. Heavy metal--or blues.

Pencil or Pen? Pen--even when I do my crosswords.

Handbag and Book: Hmm. Vicki asks, What's That Playing in the Background? #newbook #holidaymusic #boymeetsgirl

Recently, I heard holiday piano music in the background of a commercial. I really liked it, but for the life of me I can't remember the commercial. So, I just went on a quest to find holiday tunes played on the piano.

I posted on Facebook and lots of people had suggestions. Like the Piano Guys (have), and their cellist, Steven Sharpe Nelson (have), George Winston (have), Jim Brickmann (have). And a few other artists were mentioned which I did check out. Sadly, their music wasn't what I was looking for.

What I heard was very simple. I am no pianist, but what I heard was mostly right-hand notes. The music was clear and carried a connection.

I have tons of Christmas music, in fact, a whole playlist. The top one is Nat King Cole. I have included Mel Torme, Michael Buble, Rosemary Clooney, Chris Botti, Diana Krall, Frank, Bing, Josh Groban, Los Romeros, Manhattan Transfer, Manheim Steamroller, Pentatonix, Tony Bennett, and many many more. Three hundred sixty-seven songs.

So if you hear beautiful holiday piano music that isn't flowery, please-please let me know.

Last year, I fell in love with the Boot Barn commercial playing classical guitar style. I love this version of Carol of the Bells so much, I saved the commercial (stunning) on my phone just to play every now and again. Boot Barn holiday

I've always been partial to Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You," and many others.

Do you have a favorite holiday song, one you listen to over and over?

Just released on November 1, Sommerville holidays too, three cute-meet tales full of fun and forever after.

Handbag and Book - guest author Liese Sherwood Fabre : A Treasure from Istanbul and from the Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories-"Watch Him Fall"

This handbag comes from Turkey. My husband had a special business trip to Georgia (the country, not the state), and because there were no direct flights, we chose to stay a few days in Istanbul, Turkey on the way. I’d been to Antalya (a beach area) but had never been to Istanbul. We stayed near the older part of the city and were in walking distance of the Grand Bazaar, which dates back to the 1400s. It is the oldest covered market in the world, and up to 400,000 guests visit each day (in regular times). You can find EVERYTHING there—from Turkish Delight candy to gems and jewelry. Also, PURSES (Vicki would faint at the selection). This particular purse has a tapestry motif, so common in that part of the world.

We truly enjoyed our time in the city, finding those we met very open and friendly, and were sorry we couldn’t spend a little more time to see more of this fascinating city. One night, we took a dinner cruise on the Bosphorus Strait (between the European and Asian sides of the country and a link between the Black and Marmara Seas). The guests were extremely diverse, easily noted by the variety of national flags marking each table. A very entertaining evening with quite delicious food.

“Watch Him Fall” in MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories

Volume XXII

Throughout the original Holmes Canon, there were hints and teases of other intriguing cases – The Giant Rat of Sumatra . . . The Abernetty Tragedy . . . The Manor House Case. Watson mentions well over one-hundred of these, which have collectively come to be known as The Untold Cases. Now, once again MX Publishing brings us sixty-four of these adventures in three simultaneously published volumes, with all royalties going to support the Stepping Stones School at Undershaw, one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s former homes.

About the story, based on the mention of the Camberwell poisoning case in “The Five Orange Pips.”

A mob of angry investors, an empty hole beneath the floorboards, and a pocket watch.

When Holmes discovers his faithful landlady has lost her investment in the Tasmanian Gold Mining Company, he and Watson spring into action.  Threatened with the loss of their beloved 221B Baker Street, they must follow the clues to catch the swindler, who’s on the run with his ill-gotten gains.  Can the Great Detective catch the thief, or will all three be living on the streets?

"[Dr. Sherwood-Fabre] knows her Holmes characterization, and her stories do not disappoint."

Available, mid-November 2020 from: Publisher link

More about Liese Sherwood-Fabre: Award-winning author Dr. Liese Sherwood-Fabre doesn’t remember a time she didn’t know of Sherlock Holmes—be it the old Basel Rathbone movies, Tom and Jerry in deerstalker hats, or the original Conan Doyle tales. During her thirty-plus years as a federal employee, Dr. Sherwood-Fabre worked and lived in various countries, including Mexico and Russia, finding inspiration for stories based on events taking place around her. She garnered a prestigious Pushcart nomination for a short story inspired by her experiences in Mexico, and having lived through the tumultuous years of Russia’s budding democracy, her first published novel, Saving Hope, centered around an unemployed Russian microbiologist who must choose between saving her daughter’s life or working with a former KGB agent to stop the sale of bioweapons to Iran.

After returning to the states, Dr. Sherwood-Fabre revived her early interest in Sherlock Holmes and the Victorian period. For the past six years, she has shared her knowledge with other Sherlockians by contributing regularly to several society newsletters, as well as the prestigious Baker Street Journal and Canadian Holmespublications. Her Sherlock Holmes origin series The Early Case Files of Sherlock Holmes launched in June 2020, and case one: The Adventure of the Murdered Midwife is the first-place winner for the CIBA Mystery and Mayhem award.

Blog: Handbag and Book with author Alice Renaud-Not a Handbag, but a... and her #newbook #fantasyromance #accessories #traveling #MFRW

This beautiful wallet was given to me by a friend. She bought it for me in Japan where she was travelling. These days it looks like a symbol of a vanished world – the world pre-Covid, when you could jump on a plane and fly to the other side of the planet whenever you wanted.

Since March my life has become smaller somewhat, flatter… No more singing in church, no more theatres, no more visiting friends or family, no more parties… But when I look at this lovely, colourful wallet, I am also reminded that there is hope! The world is still big and colourful and full of wonderful things.

I still have much to be thankful for: family, a job, books, wine… and I can travel in my imagination whenever I want, while waiting for the time when we can travel for real. In Mermaids Marry in Green, my new fantasy romance in the Sea of Love cycle, my heroine Caltha goes on a journey too. She travels from her native Welsh island to London, where she discovers many new things… including Oriental food, water monsters, and love! Read more about it below.

Caltha Dooran is the toughest, fiercest shape-shifting mermaid in the western seas. She has three Clans to rule, and no time for romance. But when a warlock, Jonty, turns up and asks her to come with him to London to capture a water monster, she can't say no. In London, away from her duties, her attraction for Jonty grows... and they soon fall under each other's spell. But will his past and her responsibilities pull them apart, or can they find the only true magic, the one that binds two souls together?

More about Alice Renaud: Alice lives in London, UK, with her husband and son. By day she's a compliance manager for a pharmaceutical company. By night she writes fantasy romance about shape shifting mermen, water monsters and time-travelling witches. Her first book, “A Merman’s Choice,” was published in January 2019 by Black Velvet Seductions. It is the first book in a fantasy romance trilogy inspired by the landscapes and legends of Brittany and Wales. The second book, “Music for a Merman,” is out now and the third, “Mermaids Marry in Green,” will be released on 1 November. Alice has also written two short stories for BVS anthologies, “The Sweetest Magic of All,” in “Mystic Desire,” out now, and “The Holiday Mermaid” in “Desire Me Again,” out in October. Alice loves reading and writing stories, and sharing them with anyone who’s interested!

Red, White or Blue?  Blue for surroundings, red for clothes

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter? In order of increasing preference, Winter, Fall, Summer, Spring

Chocolate pudding, cake, pie? ALL of them. Waistline, what waistline? On Zoom they only see your top half…

Coffee, Tea, Champagne? Champagne for week-end evenings, tea the rest of the time

Country music or Michael Buble? Country music

Pencil or Pen? Pen but these days I write mostly on my computer

EXCERPT:

The crunch of the shovel pounding into the snow and ice filled his ears. It was all he could hear. The rest of the street was silent beneath its wintry blanket. Breathing was difficult with the icy air clogging his lungs. His nose burned. His throat was dry and on fire. But he ignored it, focusing on his task.

Crack, crack, crack.

He jabbed the shovel into a hunk of snow. On the third hit, it shattered into several pieces. He scooped them up and flung them to the side. He surveyed what remained. There was one big ball in the middle of the path that needed to be dealt with next. He moved over to it and struck it. That one impact had it severing in two. He was about to hit it again when something crashed into the back of his head.

Explosions of white light danced over his vision. Pain enveloped his skull. The shovel slipped from his fingers. Blackness cloaked his mind, coaxing him into its depths.

Beth. Her name was a whisper in his head, as if his thoughts were being sucked into a wormhole.

His legs collapsed under his weight.

Cold. It seeped into him, consuming him. And then his consciousness fled down that same void that ate his thoughts.

Handbag and Book: Author Joanne Guidoccio - Does your purse have an intriguing story? #handbag #accessories #newbook #heartbreaking

I couldn’t resist the “two-thirds”

off sale on the light tan, crossbody bag with a furry monkey (named Marlee) keychain.

Lightweight and roomy enough to accommodate all my paraphernalia, it was the perfect summer and travel bag.

At home, I took a closer look at the logo—Kipling—and wondered if there was any connection to author and poet Rudyard Kipling. Intrigued, I Googled the company and discovered the following backstory:

In 1987, three enterprising Belgians—Vincent Haverbeke, Xavier Kegels, and Paul Van De Veld—decided to shake up the conventional handbag world with a purse that would reflect their personal ideals and worldwide travels.

Their primary inspiration was The Jungle Book, a collection of fables written by Rudyard Kipling for his daughter Josephine. The entrepreneurs made it clear that their primary focus was the adventure, discovery and curiosity inherent in these fables, not the actual author (Rudyard Kipling) and his controversial sentiments.

Their mission statement: To live a vibrant and colourful life – go places never been before. Be curious. Dare to live the life we’ve always wanted. That’s our mission. Well, you may say: It’s just bags. Yes, that may be true. But sometimes it’s the simple things that make life easier.

While creating the purses, the color dye overheated, and the nylon was left crinkled. Risk-takers to the nth degree, the men decided to use the “damaged” fabric that has become one of the most recognizable in the world: crinkle nylon.

Kipling purses are also known for their signature monkey keychains with an array of monkey styles, among them puff monkey, pom-pom monkey, robot monkey, and puff tag monkey.

Angelica Delfino takes a special interest in the lives of her three nieces, whom she affectionately calls the daughters of her heart. Sensing that each woman is harboring a troubling, possibly even toxic secret, Angelica decides to share her secrets—secrets she had planned to take to the grave. Spellbound, the nieces listen as Angelica travels back six decades to reveal an incredulous tale of forbidden love, tragic loss, and reinvention. It is the classic immigrant story upended: an Italian widow’s transformative journey amid the most unlikely of circumstances.

Inspired by Angelica’s example, the younger women share their “First World” problems and, in the process, set themselves free.

But one heartbreaking secret remains untold...

Handbag & Book blog with author Liese Sherwood Fabre - What is Your Steal and Deal? #handbag #accessory #freebook #SherlockHolmes

This is my post-COVID handbag. Just prior to the pandemic, The Today Show had a “Steals and Deals” offer that included Kate Spade. I really wanted the gray and beige, but they went fast! In the end, I choose this maroon and beige, which I think is even prettier. I never buy actual designer bags (I do have Prada and Louis Vuitton knock-offs purchased on the streets of various cities, but that’s another story) and decided to splurge on a new Kate Spade wallet to go with it.

They arrived in early March—just as we were getting warnings about going out and talks of lock-downs. At that time, my husband, who meets several of the high-risk criteria, and I determined that until we get the “all clear” call, we’re staying put. So, I stored my new handbag away until then. I might have hair down to my waist (after a disastrous attempt to cut my bangs in the seventh grade, I vowed “never again” to cut it myself), but I’ll look great with this bag on my arm!

Missing boys, an imposter husband, and a bizarre vampyre murder.

Sherlock Holmes ventures into the realm of the unnatural in these three cases: the disappearance of the Baker Street Irregulars, the true identity of a Great War veteran, and a vampyre’s grisly death. Crossing into the worlds of the Grimm Brothers and Bram Stoker, he seeks the clues needed to unravel the mysteries confronting him. Can Holmes’ conventional methods still function in the unconventional world?

"[Dr. Sherwood-Fabre] knows her Holmes characterization and her stories do not disappoint."
