Real Haunted Houses: Sweetwater Mansion

Sweetwater Mansion is a plantation house located in Florence, Alabama designed by General John Brahan. The mansion received its name from the nearby Sweetwater Creek. It was first occupied by Robert M. Patton, the son-in-law of John Brahan. Robert M. Patton was elected as governor of Alabama in 1865. Sweetwater was one of the largest plantations, with a slave village of 23 cabins. There was a family cemetery onsite, as well as a slave cemetery.

The house’s basement has served as a Civil War hospital and a county jail, so there’s certainly room for some paranormal stories there.

The house has been in the center of several different ghost stories for many years. Numerous apparitions have allegedly been seen in and around the house. One of the stories is of a caretaker who reported that she saw a casket laid out in one of the downstairs rooms with the corpse of a Confederate soldier inside, which was possibly Billy Patton, the son of Robert M. Patton, and whose funeral was conducted in the house after he was killed Civil War.

One of the rooms in the house inexplicably tends to lock women inside. One of the caretakers, Emmet Lettie Region, was so terrified of her experience in the house, that she would only live in two rooms. There’s also a secret room which has no door and can only be accessed through a small interior window.

The house is a haven for paranormal investigators and ghost hunters, and just about every ghost hunter who has visited Sweetwater Mansion, has one or more stories to tell about the place.

Urban Legends Investigated: The 1962 Halloween Massacre

A picture has been distributed all across the internet showing a bunch of dressed-up partygoers allegedly during a Halloween costume party in 1962. The picture shows how terrifying costumes were back in the day, but it has also a more depressing backstory – at least, according to the urban legend.

The Story

The man in the black mask, featured on the picture, presumably locked all the doors from the outside and then tried to kill all the people in the party. He ended up killing 7 people using a kitchen knife.

He was never found, but the mask he wore was found a few years later, in 1969, and is currently in FBI custody.

The Reality

No murders were reported across the U.S. on Halloween of 1962 that match the details written underneath the picture. Additionally, the story has more plotholes than sentences: if the killer locked the doors from the outside, how would he be able to get back in?

And why did he only kill 7 people? Since he was never caught, there would not be anyone around to subdue him, right?

Plus, how would the FBI be able to confirm 7 years after the date that the black mask – which seems to be a rather ordinary mask – was the one worn by this perpetrator, if the perpetrator himself was never caught?

The Verdict

The story is a hoax, but it does go to show how creepy Halloween costumes were back in the sixties.

Real Haunted Houses: Winter Place

Winter Place was constructed between 1850 and 1870 and is located in Montgomery, Alabama. The North House was the home of Joseph S. Winter and his family, and is the earliest of the constructions. The second building, the South House, was built in the 1870s and was the home of Joseph’s daughter, Sally Gindrat Winter Thorington, and her husband Robert D. Thorington.

Sally lived in the South House until her death in 1935. The house passed on to her daughter, Bessie May Thorington. Upon her passing in 1948, her nephew Joseph Winter Thorington Jr. inherited the house.  Joseph Winter Thorington Jr. purchased the North House (which had been sold outside the family), and he subsequently converted the two houses into apartments. Winter Place was used as an apartment complex until the mid-1990s when it was damaged during a series of hurricanes.

The complex was added to the Alabama Historical Commission’s Places in Peril list in 2004 after several decades of neglect. In 2018, the properties were sold to Benjamin Blanchard, a real-estate tycoon, who is now renovating the South House to be used as his own personal residence. The North House will also be renovated in the future.

He may need to accomodate some unexpected guests every now and then, considering that supposedly, the Winters are still inhabiting the property. At least, their spirits are. According to the legends surrounding Winter Place, a Confederate soldier who was buried in the cellar walls, is also still roaming about, although there is no evidence to support this.

Ghosts or not, the buildings are hauntingly beautiful, and hopefully the renovation works can restore them in their former glory.

Urban Legends Investigated: Missing in the Odessa Catacombs

For years, and in any case since 2014, a photograph has been distributed online of a bunch of young men finding a corpse after a party in the catacombs of Odessa, Ukraine. The photograph is used to illustrate the dangers of urban exploration.

The corpse allegedly belongs to a girl who went missing in the catacombs.

The Story

The legend goes that in 2005, a group of teenagers headed out on New Year’s Eve to a party that was held in the Odessa catacombs. Note to self: never host a party in the catacombs, since that has ‘stupid idea’ written all over it.

One of the girls at the party (according to the story, she was called Masha), became drunk and went to do a little exporing and unfortunately got seperated from the group.

The other teens stopped looking for her after a while, figuring she was already out of the catacombs or would find the exist soon.

For three days, Masha wandered around in total darkness with no food or water. The catacombs were cold and dry.

She eventually perished, likely from dehydration or from hypothermia.

When Masha didn’t show up, the police were called, but they never located her or her body inside of the catacombs.

The Photograph

A few months later, a group of explorers stumbled upon the body in the catacombs – hence the photograph. I will not share it here completely because it is quite gruesome, but you can take a look here. The body seemed to be partially mummified. The deceased wore jeans and modern shoes. The explorers who found the body snapped a picture, presumably to prove to the police that they actually made this discovery. Noteworthy is that the boys in the picture look quite young.

Either way, they took the picture to the police, but thep olice was still reluctant to get involved because the catacombs were notorious for getting lost in, and the body was located a good many miles from the entrance.

The photograph was uploaded to internet, and the story took on a life of its own from there. People began to take the story as fact, believing a young girl called Masha had actually gone missing, and these explorers had stumbled upon her remains.

But was it all true? Or is it just an urban legend?

Lack of evidence

There is little to no record of a girl named Masha ever disappearing into the catacombs. However, presumably a fresh body was indeed found in the catacombs, and the body was removed around 2004-2005.

A medical examination was done on the body, but it was in terrible condition, so there were no good identifying factors left. A boy had been reported missing in the area, called Janis Stendzenieks, the son of a local newspaper magnate. But the DNA of the body didn’t match that of the missing boy – the DNA belonged to a missing girl, but she was never identified.

While the girl may not have been named Masha, and the story of a New Year’s Eve party gone wrong might not be true, fact is that the catacombs, and in particular the Odessa Catacombs, are dangerous places you should stay far away from, especially if you do not have a proper guide with you.

Other missing persons in the Odessa catacombs

In January 2012, a 22-year-old student who trekked into the Odessa catacombs disappeared. A search was organized but already a few days later, officials announced they had to call off the search again. He was never located.

In February 2021, the remains of a man, with a backpack beside him, were found in the catacombs. While his identity remains unknown, he presumably disappeared about six years ago.

In March of 2021, the remains of another man were located within the Odessa catacombs. He was 26 years old.

Whether the legend of Masha is true or not, fact remains that people often go missing in the Odessa catacombs, and that these catacombs are terrifying and you should definitely never enter them alone, or without a proper guide.

Real Haunted Houses: Barker’s Slave Quarters

In the Old Cahawba Park between Selma and Orville in Alabama, you can find a lot of intriguing stuff, ranging from archeological finds, a gothic-style church, remnants of strane wells, the foundations of a prison camp, to the remnants of the Barker’s Slave Quarters. It is certainly an interesting plave to visit, being a de facto ghost town, so if you’re in the area, definitely check this out.

Built in 1860 by Stephen Barker behind his large brick mansion, the original building was two stories high but did not have the columns that you can see featured in the picture. After the Civil Wat, Samuel McGurdy Kirkpatrick purchased the Barker mansion and its outlying structures, including the Barker’s Slave Quarters.

The Barker mansion burned down in 1935. One of the grandsons of Samuel Kirkpatrick renovated the Barker’s Slave Quarters by adding the columns and a whole new wing. But even the Kirkpatricks had to leave the town several decades later, and as of 1989, the town is officially a Ghost Town.

It’s hard to find more information about who is supposed to be haunting the Barker’s Slave Quarters, but according to paranormal investigators who have checked out the site, it certainly is haunted. Reports include a ball rolling across the floor on its own accord. Pretty spooky, if you ask me. However, there’s an even more famous ghost running around in Old Cahawba, namely Pegue’s ghost, which is some sort of will-o’-the-wisp, at least based upon the accounts of those who reportedly saw this ghost.

Nowadays, like the rest of the town, all that remains of Barker’s Slave Quarters and the nearby slave burial grounds, where the last person was buried in 1957, are ruins.

You can find out more about Old Cahawba here.

Urban Legends Investigated: Peter Bergmann

On June 16, 2009, the body of Peter Bergmann was discovered near the rocks of Rosses Point Beach in Sligo County in Ireland.

Investigation revealed that the body belonged to Peter Bergmann, or rather the man who had been known under this alias in Sligo, as it turned out that this wasn’t the man’s real name.

From the moment Peter Bergmann’s body was found, we’ve always had more questions than answers. We don’t know the man’s real name, where he originated from, how he died, why he died, or what he was even doing in Sligo.

The mystery bears a lot of resemblance to the Taman Shud case, also dubbed the “Somerton man”, who was discovered at Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia in 1948 and whose identity was never uncovered either.

Arrival in Sligo

On June 12, 2009, Bergmann (we will continue to refer to him as such throughout this article) arrived in Sligo. He arrived at the bus station at about 6:28pm that evening. He called a taxi and asked the driver to take him somewhere inexpensive.

The driver described Bergmann as being about 60 years old, tall and thin, with grey hair and a pair of glasses. He spoke with a German or Austrian accent.

The driver dropped Bergmann off at the Sligo City Hotel on Quay Street, where he booked a room for three nights and paid in cash. Bergmann wrote his name – which then turned out to be fake – on his reservation form, and gave an address in Vienna, Austria. He did not provide any identification, but he was not requested to do so either.

The next few days

Bergmann stayed in room 705. He went out a few times during his stay, carrying a purple plastic shopping bag. But when he returned, he did not have the bag with him anymore.

This strange process was repeated a total of 13 times during his stay, according to the Irish Times. However, there’s no CCTV footage anywhere that can shed light on what Bergmann was doing with the bag after he left the hotel. No items were ever found that could be traced back to Bergmann either.

While we cannot retrace his exact steps in the few days he stayed in Sligo, we do know that on June 13, 2009 he went to the post office at 10:49 am and bought eight stamps and airmail stickers. On Sunday June 14, 2009 he entered a taxi and asked the driver to bring him to a quiet beach. The taxi driver bought him to Rosses Point, where Bergmann only stayed briefly.

On June 15, 2009, Bergmann left the hotel he was staying in at around 1pm, carrying with him his purple bag and a laptop-style bag. This time around, it is believed he walked instead of taking a taxi. At the station, he ate a capuccino and sandwich. He purchased a one-way ticket at about 2:40pm when he entered the bus.

He debarked when the buss reached Rosses Point.

Rosses Point

Passersby spotted Bergmann on the beach in Rosses Point for a while, at 4pm, 5pm, all the way up until 11:50pm. Every time witnesses saw him, they noticed he was pacing around, carrying the plastic bag.

The next morning, his body was found by local Arthur Kinsella. Strangely enough, he left most of his clothing on the shore, folded and stacked in a neat little pile. All the labels were removed from his clothing. He wore a navy blue T-shirt, swimsuit, underwear on top of the swimsuit, and a wristwatch.

The purple shopping bag was missing, as were his glasses, the stamps he had purchased on Saturday and the black laptop bag.

Post-Mortem Examination

The post-mortem examination revealed that Bergmann was in the late stages of prostate cancer. According to the examinor, Bergmann had only weeks left – at most. He only had one kidney, the other presumably having been removed in the past.

Curiously enough, there was no medication in his system, not even an aspirine, although this was found in his pockets. Given that he was probably in a lot of pain due to his illnesses, it is peculiar that he was not on pain medication.

There were no signs of drowning at all, which was the initial cause of death that had been assumed. According to the post-mortem, Bergmann died from an acute cardiac arrest.

When police tried to inform Bergmann’s family about what happened, they discovered that the address he had given on his registration form did not exist, and that Peter Bergmann was a false name.

All that remains are questions

Peter Bergmann was buried on September 18, 2009 in the cemetery in Sligo. No relatives ever came to reclaim his remains or stepped forward.

Police believe that Bergmann’s actions were intentional – that he came to Sligo with the intent of taking his own life after having settled his affairs. Posting letters, disposing of belongings, all seem to indicate that, indeed. It is speculated that the reason why he died of cardiac arrest rather than drowning was the shock his already frail body experienced when walking into the water.

If you want to know more, there is a video / documentary that was made about this case.

The Verdict

Peter Bergmann was an alias used by a man who did really arrive in Sligo, stayed a few days, and passed away on the night of June 15 to June 19 of 2009.

However, who he really is, where he originates from, and why he spent the final days of his life in Sligo, remains a mystery to this day. It is unlikely, after all this time, that we will ever discover more about Bergmann’s history.

We can only hope that anyone who knew him – family, relatives, friends – knows what happened to him, and are not still out there, looking for him.

Haunted Dolls: Letta The Doll

In our series of articles on Haunted Dolls, we have traveled nearly all across the globe in search of the creepiest toys. We have featured Annabella and Robert, arguably the most famous Haunted Dolls, but the one that is the most heart-warming, rather than chilling (at least in my opinion), is the story of Letta The Doll.

Photo from Letta The Doll’s Facebook Page

This time around, the country of origin of Letta is Australia. As the story goes, Kerry Walton found the haunted doll in 1972 when he visited an abandoned building in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. Apparently, the doll was hidden under some loose floorboards, and at first, Kerry and his brother, who were investigating the property, thought they had stumbled upon a dead body, which must have been creepy as hell. They probably were relieved to find out it was just a doll… until said doll turned out to be haunted, that is.

Kerry took the doll home, and called him Letta. Apparently this happened for one of two possible reasons (neither of which are confirmed): 1) because it is a traditional gypsy name, or 2) because the doll alledgedly screamed ‘Letta me out!’ quite often, or tried to struggle to get out of the bag where Kerry and his brother put the doll in while driving him home.

Either way, Letta has become somewhat of a local celebrity, and he has been living with Kerry and his family ever since. Kerry often travels around the country with Letta, showing him off to the public, and Letta even has his own Facebook page.

According to psychics, Letta was made over 200 years ago by a Romanian gypsy for his son, who tragically drowned and whose soul then began to inhabit the doll. The doll has real human hair.

Apparently, Letta often moves around on its own accord, and tends to leave strange scuff marks around the house, but overall, Letta seems to be good-natured, and when visiting his Facebook page, you can see some pictures of Kerry and his family posing along with Letta.

So it seems as if this is one Haunted Doll who, after many struggles, has finally found a new home.

Sims 4 Lots: Two-Story Cottage

This adorable two-story Medieval-style cottage has it all: stonework, a roof shaped like a tower, a quirky yard with flowers. It could be the ideal home for a grandmother, a young couple trying to enjoy country life, a budding witch, or just about any type of Sim your imagination can conjure up.

It has one double bedroom, so it’s perfect for one or two Sims.

The above picture shows the cottage from the other side. The yard is quite small, but it is landscaped and has plenty of flowers and trees.

The front door opens up into a dining room and living room area, with a door tucked underneath the staircase that leads to a small bathroom.

When you go right after entering the house, you can access the spacious kitchen, complete with kitchen island and half a dozen windows. The kitchen is the heart of this cute house, so naturally it’s quite big.

Upstairs immediately opens up into the master bedroom, with an en-suite bathroom. There’s also a small desk area tucked away between the stairs and the bathroom.
