Could Sherlock’s Moriarty Be Doctor Who?

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Flicks and the City could not rest, Watson, no, they could not sit in their chairs if they thought for a second that such a man as Moriarty were walking the streets of London unchallenged.

So, microphone in hand, they took the next hansom to the premiere of Sam Mendes adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and did indeed challenge Moriarty himself, Andrew Scott, about rumours that he has cast covetous eyes on role of the Twelfth Doctor:

Well it’s a very flattering thing to be involved in all those discussions, but one has to wait to be asked those things.

He certainly should be in consideration for role even with the baggage of Moriarty after all he is a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty…no, wait that’s Moriarty again.

He adds:

They’re very secretive. I know Mr Moffat very well so he’ll keep his cards close to his chest for as long as possible.

Check out the video of the ‘Napoleon of Crime’ where he discusses his potential return to Sherlock, his memories of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and his upcoming performance on stage with Joanna Lumley in two short plays by Harold Pinter.

How They Made the Awesome/Fake 50th Trailer

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Go on admitted it, you were fooled. Or at least you wanted to be fooled. You wanted to believe that this was it, the moment that the anniversary cake was wheeled out, candles ablaze.

Alas it turned out to be a fan made labour of love, but that didn’t stop some sites from heralding it as the genuine article. Which just goes to show the amount of hard work and attention to detail that went into making this remarkable trailer.

But Doctor Who fans are a wily old bunch and love a time-bending conundrum – especially one as detail heavy as this – so in that spirit of investigation and creation the maker of the best 50th anniversary trailer that never was has released this VFX breakdown of the whole thing.

Get out your notes people, let’s see how you did!

Like a magician revealing his secrets the fact that we now know how the illusion is constructed doesn’t detract from the entertainment value – in fact, in those brief shots, cunning little cheats and slight manipulations there’s a lot more to admire.

Let’s hope the actual trailer lives up to it!

Ron Weasley for Twelfth Doctor?

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

If just under a quarter of the four thousand internet posts analysed by the sinister sounding company Crimson Hexagon are to be believed then the Doctor may get his wish and finally be ginger.

Is Harry Potter's Rupert Grint the Twelfth Doctor Who?

According to the data collected by the NSA social media analytics provider ForSight platform fans have taken to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to make Harry Potter star Rupert Grint their choice for the next Doctor.

Rupert was the second favourite choice to become the Doctor with 23% of the analysed posts, behind the heavily publicised choice of Richard II star Rory Kinnear. Merlin’s Colin Morgan (who also appeared in 2008′s Midnight) was the third most popular choice with 21% of posts.

The survey also revealed that only 13% of posts suggest the next Doctor should be a woman, while less than 4% wanted a black actor.

Personally, while I think Rupert’s a perfectly fine genre actor, he doesn’t possess that otherworldly quality necessary to make the Doctor such a beguiling, enigmatic figure. I’d have trouble believing he had vanquished alien races or made impossible choices.

Do you think Rupert Grint make a good Doctor? Too ginger? Too young?

Royal Visit’s John Hurt Revelations!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall’s trip to the Doctor Who set has been a resounding success, with the extremely privileged couple given the chance to travel through time and space.

Charles and Camilla were fortunate enough to meet Nick Briggs, be harrassed by some Daleks and were also shown around the TARDIS set by a shorn Matt Smith and a very pretty Jenna-Louise Coleman. Chuckles ensued as the duchess was invited to pull the TARDIS lever, resulting in some lights, sound and artron magic!

What is intriguing about the visit, however, is the number of things we can glean from the various chats. For instance, in the video above you can hear Jenna explaining to the Prince of Wales:

“…we finished about two months ago. We had three different Doctors in here and we shot on 3D as well… yeah, three different Doctors. John Hurt, and David Tennant was back and Matt. Three different Doctors playing against each other”.

All of that jolly Dalek nonsense and Steven Moffat offering Charles a role (“I haven’t thought about how I could weave a meeting between the Doctor and the royal family. But Prince Charles’s attempt at being a Dalek was great. There would be a part in the show for him if he wanted it.”) aside, however, there is a darker side to this visit. It seems that The Telegraph has let on how John Hurt fits in…

John Hurt’s Doctor

It seems that costume designer Howard Burden (who should know, given that it was his brief to dress John Hurt’s character) revealed the truth behind the so-called “dark Doctor” as he showed the royal couple a selection of costumes from the show.

“There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”

So, let the dismissals and claims of “what would he know?!” begin!

(With thanks to Joe)

Doctor Who Prom 2013 Details

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

This month offers another celebration for Doctor Who’s 50th birthday but this time, instead of celebrating the man, we’ll be celebrating his music!

The BBC Proms 2013 will be celebrating in style on July 13th with Prom 2 – Doctor Who Prom, featuring the work and talent of Murray Gold’s writing that we’ve enjoyed for the last eight years. Ben Foster will be resuming his excellent duties as Conductor for the event as well as performances from the London Philharmonic Choir and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

But seeing as how this is one of the Doctor’s biggest birthday’s ever, these talented and dedicated people have decided not only to showcase their work from Rose to The Name of the Doctor but to also celebrate music from the last 50 years of Doctor Who in its entirety! The performance will journey back and look at the work done by the BBC Radiophonic workshop, quite what they’ll choose to play is anyone’s guess but this is a concert that you won’t want to miss if you’re a fan of Doctor Who’s music from over the years.

Of course, if that’s not enough for you, there’ll be the usual appearances from special guests, a host of the Doctor’s most fearsome enemies and some big screen celebrations.

All you have to do is sit back and relax and then tune in to BBC Radio 3 at 7.30 pm on Saturday 13th  July for some Doctor Who fun and games.

Will Rightful Rulers Exterminate Heir?

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Today is the day in which the Prince of Wales and his consort the Duchess of Cornwall visit Roath Lock in South Wales to visit the Doctor Who set as part of the show’s 50th anniversary!

RTD Daleks

Stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman, showrunner Steven Moffat and various crew members (such as the show’s costume designer, storyboard artist, locations manager, graphics artist, set decorator and production designer), will be in attendance to greet the heir to the throne, who will be shown around the Doctor Who production office and taken to the TARDIS set.

As befits a member of the royal family, Charles will then be introduced to the iconic monsters of Doctor Who’s 50 years, such as a Weeping Angel, a Cyberman, an Ood and of course the Daleks, with whom his father has a lot in common. Dalek voice artist Nicholas Briggs will also be on hand, and the Prince and the Duchess will later receive a demonstration of video FX in using the green screen method. Various departmental displays have been prepared for the royal visit, and the couple will meet some hand-chosen Skillset apprentices who are training at Roath Lock.

No doubt we’ll have some interesting scenes on the BBC news later today!

Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

During Doctor Who’s 50 years on television, the old Time Lord has made a lot of friends. It must be said that it’s mainly women that he travels with but he’s certainly shared time with plenty of fellas as well.

Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman

So it’s fitting that during Doctor Who’s anniversary year, author Richard Kirby has decided to chronicle his own personal mission: to obtain an autograph from every living actress that has portrayed one of the Doctor’s companions.

Not an easy task, we’re sure you’ll agree. There are some that don’t want to be found and some that finding would prove incredibly difficult to do but maybe, just maybe, Kirby has the wherewithal to pull this particular mission off.

There’s plenty for fans from all generations to enjoy here and hopefully you’re going to find out a story or two that you never knew about, all leading up to the endgame: will Richard Kirby actually find Susan Foreman?

Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley will be interviewing Richard Kirby in next week’s PodKast – don’t miss it!

Submissions Request: The Doctor & I

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Some of us have been there from the very beginning; others joined the fold in the 1970’s, 1980’s or 1990’s. Many of you started the journey in 2005 and have been awed as you’ve watched the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors save the Universe time after time.

The Doctor and Rose encounter Charles Dickens in The Unquiet Dead

However you started, you’ve got a story to tell and that’s where the fun can really begin!

Whovian.net is celebrating the Doctor’s 50th birthday by examining one of the greatest and most important aspects of the series: the fans. The Doctor & I is a commemorative book that will be made up of your Doctor Who stories; all you have to do is submit your account to be in with a chance of being published.

So here’s the idea:

As Doctor Who turns 50 years old we want to know what being a Whovian means to YOU – whether you’ve been following the Doctor since day one or accidentally stumbled upon his recent adventures at 4 in the morning on Netflix, we want to hear from you, in essay/report/diary/story style.

The Whovian stories we receive will be collated into a special commemorative book which you’ll be able to buy later this year (price TBA). The book will serve as a celebration of the fandom that’s been 50 years in the making with, we hope, stories from fans worldwide – both young and old – as we come together to mark the Doctor’s 50th birthday.

All you have to do is tell your story, were you bored one night and it was the only thing on the television, did a friend show you Rose and got you hooked, did you watch The TV Movie and simply had to find out about the Doctor and the Master’s other battles? Your tale is important an Whovian.net want you to tell it.

Deadline for submissions is 11th August 2013 so you best get to writing your ideas right now, don’t delay if you want to get your tale publicly known.

For information on how to submit your work visit http://www.whoviannet.co.uk/anniversary/thedoctorandi/.
