Krazy Kasting podKast

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast This week’s Kasterborous podKast with a “K” sees the full team of Brian, Christian and James getting together to mull over the recent topics in the Doctor Who world.

We start off with a chat about the appearance of the replica of the original TARDIS console from Mark Gatiss’ An Adventure in Space and Time at the Paris Comic Con (it will later be seen at the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff) before chatting about the frankly insane “news” that Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby were names suggested for a US production of Doctor Who in the 1980s.

But the highlight this week is probably a chat with Richard Kirby, author of the rather wonderful Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman, an account, complete with brief reviews of stories, of one man’s quest to find autographs from all of the Doctor’ female companions (and not, as we mention before the interview, every single companion). Richard is fascinating to speak to, and it’s always great to feature a guest. I wonder WHO we might have next time…?

But for now, it’s on with the show, so let the house band play you in!

And look out for more coverage on this event later today, in which Matt makes some startling (for some) revelations…

Murray Gold Scores Song For 50

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Doctor Who composer, Murray Gold, spoke to Radio 4’s Front Row about scoring the 50th anniversary special and how he feels when he hears his music performed live at the Royal Albert Hall.

In preparation for this weekend’s Doctor Who Proms, Murray says what most surprised him about his music for the show at the proms was the hush before it begin, and the scale of it:

“I write quite big. I write to be heard on the back row so that suits an audience being present because there’s a lot of strong rather than subtle emotions flying around and when you have strong emotions in an auditorium, it’s a really great feeling.”

He announces that he’s written a very special track, Song For 50, to celebrate the show’s anniversary in November – a track which will debut at the Proms, He says:

“We thought it would be appropriate to write something to commemorate the birthday; essentially happy birthday to a lovely television show… But it was really the fact that because I’ve been in the Royal Albert Hall twice with this body of music, I know how people react and it’s a real privilege to be able to write directly for an audience that you know. So I wrote this – well, it’s effectively a long song to speak for everybody in that room.”

And yes, he’s seen the special, and he recalls trying to score it during a flight!

“I flew over the night before last and I had the 50th on my lap and I did constantly check over my shoulder for any potential Doctor Who spies. But it was mostly stewardesses just asking me what I was up to and I just said, ‘ah, it’s just a hobby.’”

He also talks about how he hopes his soundtracks have a particular resonation on TV, which he calls a “democratic medium.”

Doctor Who Proms

Naturally, the conversation strays onto the upcoming Twelfth Doctor, whose identity is, of course, still unknown. He says:

“I was just sitting downstairs and the new exec producer of Doctor Who [Brian Minchin] walked in and said, ‘Murray, you’re supposed to be in America! What are you doing here?’ And I said, ‘I’m just doing Front Row; what are you doing here?’ He just winked at me. And I said, ‘I’m going to steal your Filofax – it’s in there, isn’t it?’ And he said, ‘No’… I honestly have no idea.”

It’s a really nice interview with the man who’s been working on the show since its return in 2005, and is well worth a listen. Even if it’s just to catch a snippet of I Am The Doctor.

Barrowman Wants Female Twelfth Doctor!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Torchwood star John Barrowman – who recently tied the knot with his long-term partner (so congratulations) – appeared on TV this week declaring that the Twelfth Doctor should be a woman…

John Barrowman, Captain Jack Harkness himself.

The Captain Jack Harkness actor, a regular on sofas on ITV and BBC shows, was this time appearing on the Daybreak show, where he asked, “why shouldn’t we have a female doctor?”

We’ve had great guys playing the role. The character of River Song was so popular in the last part of the series and it was such an impact.

Give it a whirl, if it doesn’t work she can always regenerate, she can always regenerate back to a man – I’ve been there, I’ve watched them do it.

These comments are hardly likely to endear Barrowman further with Doctor Who fans already baffled by his headline-grabbing claim of being cast in the 50th anniversary special before backtracking. Does this self-confessed fan mean what he says, or is this just a quick and easy way to grab some publicity?

Either way, we think David Tennant put it best…

Radio Times.

Moff, Matt & Jenna at San Diego Comic Con

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The San Diego Comic Con is fast approaching with many of you already having bought your tickets; if you’re a Doctor Who fan in America then you’re going to want to as soon as you can (if they’re still available).

dw-matt-sdcc2011-hp1

Sunday’s line up of guests and panels has been formally announced and it’s going to be one heck of a day for all of those that attend!

As well as panels on Superman: The New 52 era, Ducktales: Remastered, Supernatural, Breaking Bad, Teen Titans Go!, X-Men, Stephen King’s new miniseries Under the Dome, Sons of Anarchy and a Beware the Batman screening, there will also be a panel celebrating Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary.

Featuring appearances by Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman and, of course, Steven Moffat, there will also be a chance to hear opinions from Mark Gatiss and David Bradley. Gatiss has just written An Adventure in Space and Time, a documentary-drama to be shown on the BBC later this year to explain the genesis of Doctor Who on television and Bradley (who also appeared as Solomon in Dinosaurs on a Spaceship) will be playing William Hartnell as he brings the very first Doctor to life. This will all take place on Sunday July 21st in Hall H.

On Thursday July 18th at the convention, you’ll also be able to see Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue discussing Sherlock and what fans can expect from the newest series starring Bendict Cumberbatch that will be shown on the BBC later this year.

Sunday’s full line up can be found at www.comicbookmovie.com.

The Doctor: His Lives and Times

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

He’s made a mark on almost every era of history, and he’s touched millions of lives across space and time.

He is the Doctor and these are his Lives and Times.

Lives and TimesIn these pages you’ll find just some of the stories behind those brief encounters, each of them addressing the question that must never, ever be answered: ‘Doctor Who?’

This is the story of an impossible life – of a man who borrowed a spaceship, travelled through time and continually saved the universe – as told by the Doctor’s friends, by his enemies, and by the man himself. Letters, journals, trial records, secret government files and the occasional bit of tabloid journalism reveal the never-before-told story of Gallifrey’s last Time Lord.

The Doctor – His Lives and Times, written by James Goss (Dead Air; Dead of Winter) and Steve Tribe (The Encyclopaedia; The Time Traveller’s Almanac), the hardback edition, is available to pre-order now for release on the 26th September for £15.99 from Amazon UK.

Where You Can Watch Doctor Who Online

Joe Siegler is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Doctor Who has been off air for several weeks now. You might be bored of your Time Lord-free life, refreshing Kasterborous every 15 minutes for the latest news and attempting to mainline Rick Lundeen’s adaptation of The Daleks’ Master Plan to keep you going until November.

But in actual fact, if you’re reading this, you perhaps already have access to a wide selection of Doctor Who episodes from 1963 to 2012, thanks to the Netflix and Amazon Prime subscription services. With the former, you might even be able to enjoy Doctor Who on your games console, tablet or smartphone!

Note that we haven’t included YouTube as this has been featured elsewhere on Kasterborous.

MODERN SERIES

The majority of the modern series is available for streaming on the two major players (Netflix & Amazon Prime Streaming), but they’re not exact duplicates of each other. Here’s what I found in terms of what’s available, and what is not.

Modern Doctor Who is available on Netflix

Series 1-6

Available on both Netflix & Amazon Prime Streaming with a couple of exceptions, noted below.

Series 7

Part 1 (Asylum of the Daleks thru The Angels Take Manhattan & Pond Life) is available on Amazon Prime Streaming, but NOT Netflix.

Part 2 (The Snowmen through The Name of the Doctor) is not yet available on either. It can be purchased on Amazon though.

A few notes about the modern series:

a) Planet of the Dead: Streaming on Amazon Prime, but not available for streaming with Netflix. You can, however get it from Netflix as a physical disc.

b) A Christmas Carol: Not available at all on Netflix (stream or disc), but it is on Amazon Prime Streaming.

c) Netflix has them grouped better in series – they lumped the specials in with the series they appear most near. Amazon has seasons, plus two groups of “Specials”. One for Tennant (Planet of the Dead, Waters of Mars, The End of Time), and one for Smith (A Christmas Carol, The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe, & The Snowmen), although The Snowmen isn’t available on Prime Streaming yet, it can be purchased.

d) The shorts, like Time Crash, CiN 2005, Space/Time, etc.. These are not available via streaming, but that’s no surprise. Some of the prequels *ARE* available on Amazon Prime Streaming, though.

CLASSIC SERIES

I have a streaming only account with Netflix, and I can’t easily check and see what is available on the disc side of things. I searched for some of the physical DVD’s I own myself, and it did not find any of them.

*THIS IS ALL THERE IS FOR CLASSIC STREAMING* – so recommending Netflix for Doctor Who in the US is not a good idea. There’s a couple, but there’s so little, it might as well not be there, IMO. The bulk of this is the same on both services (Netflix & Amazon Prime Streaming), but there’s a couple of them that are only available on one or the other.

William Hartnell

The Aztecs (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Patrick Troughton

The Tomb of the Cybermen (Amazon Prime)

The Mind Robber (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Jon Pertwee

Spearhead from Space (Netflix & Amazon Prime

The Three Doctors (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Carnival of Monsters (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Green Death (Netflix)

Tom Baker

The Ark in Space (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Pyramids of Mars (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Robots of Death (Amazon Prime)

The Talons of Weng-Chiang (Amazon Prime)

Horror of Fang Rock (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Ribos Operation (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Pirate Planet (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Androids of Tara (Netflix)

The Power of Kroll (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The City of Death (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Leisure Hive (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Peter Davison

Earthshock (Amazon Prime)

The Visitation (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

The Caves of Androzani (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Colin Baker

Vengeance on Varos (Amazon Prime)

Sylvester McCoy:

Ghost Light (Amazon Prime)

The Curse of Fenric (Netflix & Amazon Prime)

Paul McGann

The TV Movie doesn’t appear on either Netflix or Amazon Prime Streaming. If you want the Eighth Doctor, watch Human Nature/Family of Blood, The Next Doctor and The Eleventh Hour

So, not a bad selection – and certainly enough to keep you busy till, well, the weekend!

Doctor Who Revisited: 7th Doctor

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

We have a few updates for you good people living in the good old US of A regarding the scheduling for BBC America’s Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited series.

Remembrance of the Daleks

July will celebrate the era of the Seventh Doctor as played by Sylvester McCoy from 1987 until 1996. The documentary will have appearances from Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred (Ace) and Bonnie Langford (Mel). Steven Moffat will even be chucking in his 2 cents to talk about the Seventh Doctor.

Following on from the documentary will be a screening of Remembrance of the Daleks for you to enjoy, which is honestly one of the finest slices of Doctor Who fun you could wish for.

Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited- The Seventh Doctor airs Saturday 27th July at 7pm ET on BBC America.

The Doctor is reunited with the Counter-Measures team in November's Big Finish story

Following on from this, there will be a slight change in the DVD release date for the documentary. Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited Volume 2 will now be available in shops from 1st October 2013 rather than its original release date of 17th September.

This 4-DVD box set will contain documentaries on the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Doctors and will also feature a classic adventure for each of the Doctors that it’s representing. We’re willing to bet our pensions that the TV movie starring Paul McGann will be included within this set.

You can pre order your copy here.

(Thanks to David Tennant News and the DT Forum.)

Aneurin Barnard Wants to be 12th Doctor

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Someone who would ‘absolutely’ consider taking the role of the Doctor is The White Queen star Aneurin Barnard.

Programme Name: We'll Take Manhattan - TX: n/a - Episode: n/a (No. n/a) - Embargoed for publication until: 17/01/2012 - Picture Shows: Strictly embargoed for use in print or online before January 17th 2012. David Bailey (ANEURIN BARNARD) - (C) Kudos - Photographer: Daniel Krieger

The Welsh actor, who in the past has been touted as a potential James Bond, has said he is a fan of the show and that it seemed ‘like a very good, fun job to be involved in’.

Aneurin, who played David Bailey alongside former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan in We’ll Take Manhattan, told the Radio Times:

“It’s one of those roles that has lived through time…It’s an endless tale and what’s interesting about Doctor Who is it can go in any direction at any point and every Doctor is taken very differently.”

He added:

“It’s a great piece of storytelling and you can have a lot of fun with that. I’m a fan, too, and I do catch it when I can, and I like all the old stuff.”

A great piece of storytelling it may be, however there are certain corners of the internet crying out for the Doctor to break with that storytelling tradition and, when the time comes for Matt Smith to say goodbye, regenerate into a woman.

One fan who is opposed to such a change is Law and Order: UK star Georgia Taylor.

Programme Name: We'll Take Manhattan - TX: n/a - Episode: n/a (No. n/a) - Embargoed for publication until: 17/01/2012 - Picture Shows: Strictly embargoed for use in print or online before January 17th 2012.L-R Jean Shrimpton (KAREN GILLAN), David Bailey (ANEURIN BARNARD) - (C) Kudos - Photographer: Adam Lerner

Citing the reaction of fans to Dr Watson swapping gender in the recent, superfluous American case book of Sherlock Holmes, Elementary, Georgia said:

“It’s never going to happen. That’s not me doing a disservice to womankind, it is just one of those things.

It’s a bit like when they did Elementary. It wasn’t even Sherlock, it was his assistant, but the outrage that caused.”

As to whether the actress would like to appear on show, she said:

“I don’t think they will ever do it and I think now I am getting too old to even be the Doctor’s assistant.

They are all in their early 20s, and pretty. I think that ship has sailed for me, but I would like to be a Doctor Who baddie.”

So could you see Aneurin as the Doctor? Would changing the Doctor’s sex cause outrage or are you open to such a change?
