Join Our News Team!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

This month marks the end of an era for the Kasterborous website team, as we move things around behind the scenes to reflect our growing success. We’ve been stunned to see a three-fold increase in readership over the past 12 months, which is particularly impressive when you consider that we haven’t really changed a thing since we started back in 2005!

klogov6f

The resulting change around, which I’ll outline in a moment for those of you who are interested, will result in a couple of openings in the news team…

So first of all, the news team changes. For the past few months Philip Bates has been expertly assisting me in editing tasks on days when I’ve been unable to give the task my full attention. His role has increased somewhat in all of this, so Phil is now the Kasterborous Assistant Editor!

Meanwhile, Meredith Burdett (Mez to most) has done some excellent work in reviewing and interviewing people over the years, largely in the audio space. His knowledge of the Big Finish output has proved extremely useful, so as a result Mez will be dealing almost exclusively with Big Finish and AudioGo (along with a handful of other producers) news and reviews from now on.

Andrew Reynolds, meanwhile, will remain as our senior news reporter – and we’re looking for someone to join him…

Write for Kasterborous!

So what do you need to do to write for Kasterborous?

The news team role is perhaps the most demanding, but with these changes we hope to be able to expand to a wider team that would reduce output to a single 100-300 word article per team member per day (as many as six pieces per week). You should be able to submit this through the website (although you can use email to begin with if you’re unfamiliar with submitting articles online) the same day as the assignment is sent out.

If you’re in a position to submit short news items and join our news team and are looking for a way to expand your portfolio as you build toward writing professionally, stop reading and drop me a line – christian@kasterborous.com

In return, we can give you a platform for sharing your thoughts about Doctor Who, as well as a @kasterborous.com email address. You’ll also be noticed by certain people in the industry who read the website and will be able to use your association with us to positive effect.

Since we launched in 2005, contributors and key personnel have progressed to professional assignments as a direct consequence of having their work published here. Co-founder and designer of our site Anthony Dry has been involved with the design of most Doctor Who DVD boxsets since 2005, while one-time writer Kevin Roth won himself a copy-writing job. Meanwhile I (editor Christian Cawley) have been able to use my experiences here to become a full-time freelancer since 2010.

Although there is no regular cash involved, there is a chance for you to get Doctor Who paraphernalia sent to you for reporting and reviewing purposes. You’ll also receive your own profile page where you can link back to your own blog. Contributors have also been afforded reduced/free entry to Doctor Who events…

Matt Smith Mingles at Comic Con in Disguise!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Hey SDCC-goers! Did you spot a skinny tall chap with a Bart Simpson mask on wandering the floor this weekend?

You didn’t realise at the time – but you spotted the Doctor himself, Matt Smith!

Imagine what would have happened if he had revealed himself in public…!

(Thanks to Joe)

Could Branagh Be The Master?

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

When not being this generation’s Laurence Olivier, dazzling audiences of both stage and screen with his adaptations of Shakespeare’s finest plays, he can be found adding dutch angles to Marvel’s Thor and now, it seems like he’d like to try his hand at being a Doctor Who villain.

Could Kenneth Branagh play The Master?

Renowned Shakespearian actor and former Thor wrangler Kenneth Branagh was asked by fans gathered for his live Q&A over at The Guardian whether or not he would take on the role of the Master?

“I am a long-time hide-behind-the-sofa-in-the-early-Doctor-Who-in-the-1960s fan. The Master I remember was played brilliantly by an actor called Roger Delgado I don’t think I can get him out of my mind.”

However, he has ruled himself out of the role of the Doctor himself:

“Is there a leader of the Cybermen? Or even just a funny Cyberman?”

Is Branagh a worthy successor to Delgado? Who else would you like to see take on the role? Or Would you be happy to have John Simm back?

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

No Whovian’s 50th anniversary will be complete without taking in both Sony Gold nominee Toby Hadoke’s superb shows, Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf and My Stepson Stole My Sonic Screwdriver presented together for the first (and quite possibly also the last) time in a West End double.

Gatiss on Writing…and Showrunning?

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

It’s a busy old time for Mark Gatiss, with the much anticipated An Adventure in Space and Time due in November and a role in HBO’s Dragon-a-thon Game of Thrones, Mark has now confirmed, to the surprise of no one, he’s confirmed that he’ll be back writing again for Series 8 of Doctor Who.

dw-writers-mgatiss-hp1

Speaking to Tardib (French language site) Mark Gatiss shared his take on the unique challenge of being a recurring writer and writing once again for a new Doctor:

“It is lovely to write for the series when you have never done it before, but to continue to do so and to make new things for a new Doctor, it is a kind of different challenge.”

While on the subject of a different challenge, he was also asked if he would be interested in taking over as head writer if and when Steven Moffat departs:

“Steven will never leave. I hope that he will never leave! I can’t say much about it, life is too complicated and strange to know when this sort of thing will happen.”

The keen amongst you will note that he hasn’t said ‘no’.

According to Variety, Mark is set to join the cast of HBO’s Game of Thrones, which is currently filming its fourth series, alongside Pedro Pascal, in an as yet unannounced role.

10th Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver Remote Control

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

A few days ago, we delivered the news that a gold plated universal remote in the form of the Eleventh Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver was available for pre-order.

10th Doctor Sonic

But what if you’re not a fan of that particular iteration? What if the Ninth or Tenth Doctor’s screwdrivers were your favourites?

There’s no need for panic, The Wand Company has thought of that! We’re pleased to announce that you can now pre-order the Tenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver as part of the universal remote series.

Officially licenced from BBC Worldwide, this 1:1 replica is not only a fully functioning universal remote but also comes with a built-in fully rechargeable battery, sound effects taken from the BBC archives, 10 secret Morse code messages to discover and a light up blue tip, so as you’re changing the channel you can also re-enact your favourite moments from the David Tennant years of Doctor Who.

The piece comes with a die cast metal stand, including Gallifreyan text) and even extends for full authenticity!

Of course, like all good items, there is a cost. You can pre-order the Tenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver Remote Control from Forbidden Planet for £69.95 and is scheduled for 1st October 2013.

Sydney’s 50th Anniversary Exhibition

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

What are you doing on Wednesday 14th August 2014? If you’re a massive Doctor Who fan, which, let’s face it, you should be as you’re on Kasterborous, then you’ll want to get yourself to the ABC television centre in Ultimo, Sydney where you can attend the Celebrate 50 years of Adventure in Time and Space Exhibition.

Celebrate The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary!

Running from 5.30pm until 7.30pm the exhibition will no doubt show off all the glorious things that best represent our favourite Time Lord; details on what will be included are scarce, the invitation merely announces the date and time rather than what will be included but Kasterborous wouldn’t be surprised if it were akin to the Doctor Who Experience located in Cardiff.

If you’re lucky enough to live in Australia then our advice would be to try and book a place as soon as you can. This will be a unique opportunity that not many from around the world will be able to say they attended!

The ABC television studios where the exhibition is being held already offer a number of tour packages for the public to attend so hopefully their team has been hard at work to offer you the best Doctor Who ‘down under’ experience that you could want.

If you’ve been given an invitation then you’ll need to RSVP by Monday 5th August. The event starts at 5.30pm on Wednesday 14th August.
