Huffington Post Claims Tom Baker to Appear The Day of the Doctor

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

There have been rumours for months and now Tom Baker has seemingly broken ranks about his Doctor Who anniversary involvement.

Yes, this could be considered a spoiler, but given that the news has appeared on one of the world’s biggest websites we’ll forego the formalities.

Says the oldest surviving Doctor:

I am in the special. I’m not supposed to tell you that, but I tell you that very willingly and specifically; the BBC told me not to tell anybody but I’m telling you straightaway.

It worked out very well, I think, judging by the reactions of the technicians.

Is Tom winding up the world’s most famous online newspaper publisher of unattributed content?

Well, a BBC representative told them:

As with William Hartnell’s recent appearance in the last season finale, anything is possible in Doctor Who. But nothing is certain.

What do you think – classic Doctors for the fiftieth? We’ve already heard that Peter Davison has a script, and Tom Baker has previously said that he will be watching the special – despite years and years of admissions that he only watches Doctor Who when he is in it…

Doctor Who Takes Cover of USA’s TV GUIDE

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith has made the cover of the US’s TV Guide Magazine! A large picture of Smith brandishing his sonic screwdriver features prominently, as does “DOCTOR WHO” written in large print above the TV Guide logo. A small TARDIS is seen floating in the background.

The special holiday preview issue also features a 4-page spread on the show, including a huge double-page photo of a silhouetted Smith and Tenth Doctor David Tennant. There is also a small side article and photo (probably from The Thick of It) featuring upcoming Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi.

This is, quite frankly, terrific coverage from the US’s main television magazine.

TV Guide’s spotlight on Doctor Who comes just on the heels of the US’s Entertainment Weekly new issue naming the “delightful” and “charming” An Adventure in Space and Time to their Must List (The Top 10 Things We Love This Week) of ALL entertainment choices for the week!

Regular Doctor Who Personnel Changes “Brutal” Says Jenna

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Jenna Coleman appeared on ITV’s Daybreak show earlier today, in which she revealed a few feelings about recording Matt Smith’s final Doctor Who moments.

Most interesting was her description of the show’s cast turnaround being “so brutal” – something that we wonder might be a sign that the actress herself is perhaps considering moving on soon.

On the matter of the forthcoming regeneration – in which the Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor will be replaced by Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth:

I knew it was going to be sad, but it was really traumatic. It was very emotional and overwhelming.

It’s a strange thing [but] it’s the nature of the show. Matt leaves, Peter arrives in his costume and the scene carries on. You just keep going – that’s the show.

Peter Capaldi’s casting has proved that Doctor Who is still considered a great lead role, even for older actors (even if they did grow up as fans) and his appearance should be enough to whet appetites for the next full series.

Still, let’s get The Day of the Doctor out of the way first…

Rare Shoreditch Newspaper For Sale!

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

An interesting curiosity has found its way on to eBay in the week of the 50th anniversary, with the listing of the local newspaper which covered the mysterious disappearance of a teenage schoolgirl in 1963…

The copy of the Shoreditch Herald (not a real newspaper) imagines how the press might have covered Susan Foreman’s disappearance if the events of An Unearthly Child had really taken place. It even includes a quote from the officer who first responded in the case, Constable Sydney Newman.

In a nice touch, the fake newspaper also references Remembrance of the Daleks by including a story about unexplained explosions in the same area.

The item, a quirky souvenir of this very special week for the programme, is available for £9.99 with free postage.

“No bug-eyed monsters!” Sydney Newman Makes It Clear

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

We are now a mere four days away from the big one, but even more tantalizingly, we are only two away from what is shaping up to be a spectacular equal to that of the multi doctor event at the weekend.

We have now been gifted with a second trailer for An Adventure in Space and Time the Mark Gatiss drama that chronicles the birth and rise of Doctor Who and the people who built it. Though technically its more a clip than a trailer, it shows us just how amazing a job has been done in the recreation of not only a very authentic 60′s looking BBC, but what seems to be a note perfect Sydney Newman from the former Elder Ood, Brian Cox and equally stunning Verity Lambert from Jessica Raine.

Based on the quality of this clip and the attention to detail we have seen in the first trailer and the reactions from the BFI screening, it seems safe to say that this will be everything we could hope for and more.

So what did you think of it, has Cox sold himself as a Canadian to you? Did the period detailing blow your mind? Or maybe you still have reservations about the whole thing. Messages below, as usual, will be much read and opined upon.

Doctor Who To Film In Australia?

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

If things go the way that Australian MP George Christensen hopes, we could see the TARDIS materialise outside the Sydney Opera House in 2015.

The MP recently put forward the motion to entice Moffat and company to head to Australia to film the series in the year of the 50th anniversary of the Australian debut of the programme.

The motion made many mentions of Australia’s strong links over the years to the show, ranging from the likes of Janet Fielding and Kylie Minogue through to the shows genesis with Australians such as C.E. “Bunny” Webber, Anthony Coburn, Ron Grainer and Dudley Simpson who were all so instrumental in the show’s birth.

As there have been contributions from Australian film funds in the past (notably for the shows 20th anniversary) and its rich history of filming abroad (from America and Canada to Amsterdam, Spain and France) there is no reason to not have the production move for a year.

What do you think; should they take the show on the road, as it were? Would the idea of a series filmed in Oz appeal or repel you? Is it location filming for its own sake much as was the case for The Two Doctors or would it lend itself to stories in the same way that Paris did for City of Death and Spain did for A Town called Mercy. Leave your words below for us to inspect.

Or does he?

Jenna Coleman Discusses The Day Of The Doctor

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

In a short interview, Clara Oswin Oswald herself, Jenna Coleman, tells what she can about The Day of the Doctor…and hopefully doesn’t get herself into too much trouble.

When it airs this Saturday to a world-wide audience, the 90-minute show will bring together a half-century of fun, fans, and excitement. The current companion sounds delighted with the 50th anniversary:

It’s fantastic. I feel really spoilt to be honest and lucky to be in the show in the first place, but also to have come in at this time. Whilst we were filming it felt very celebratory and special. Working with David, Billie and John, I feel really pleased to be part of the whole thing.

And she says the Tenth (David Tennant) and Eleventh (Matt Smith) Doctors had a lot of good-natured fun together on the set during filming:

I think there’s a competitiveness in them that kind of brings out the best in the Doctor. You see it on set that they are so totally different Doctors, but they just complement each other. They make fun of each other mercilessly.

Jenna’s said in the past that she’s become a master of giving long answers to Doctor Who-related questions without actually saying much. She does a great job in that area when asked about John Hurt’s newly named “War Doctor”:

So, not only do we have David back, we also have John Hurt starring as the Doctor, which is massively exciting. And again, the three of them complement each other totally, and it utterly works. It’s great to see all of them together.

And faster than a person can be scattered like confetti across the Doctor’s personal timestream, she has this answer when asked about doing her own stunts, like the now-famous “dangling TARDIS” filming earlier this year:

Although I didn’t get to the do the really high stunt in Trafalgar Square, which I was devastated about, and was kind of stood around begging people to go up, but I got to do the end of it. I am quite scared of rollercoasters, but when you’ve got a camera pointing at you and loads of crew, then you kind of just tend to be really brave. That’s one of the thrills of the show.

The lovely and brave Jenna (“Hey, where’d my Louise go?”) Coleman will be seen in just a few days in The Day of the Doctor. And she will team for the last time with outgoing Doctor Matt Smith in this year’s Christmas Special, which will probably be titled something like “The Eleven Days of Christmas” or “The Night and Day of the Fall of the Eleventh,” or worse still, something drearily obvious like “Twelfth Night.”

Kasterborites, if you could see a version of Clara teamed with another incarnation of the Doctor, which Doctor would it be?

Buckingham Palace Celebrates 50 Years Of Doctor Who!

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Doctor! Doctor! Doctor! DOCTOR!!

The Daleks have invaded Buckingham Palace!

Matt Smith, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, and John Hurt were all on hand to save the palace from the invasion of the Daleks at the reception given by the Countess of Wessex to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary.

The Countess reportedly told the four Doctors that she had been a fan of the show since watching it as a child with her brother David.

Buckingham Palace Visit 1

Tom Baker revealed that the Countess said that his Fourth Doctor was her favourite:

She told me I was her favorite Doctor, which is very thrilling and very flattering and I will probably never recover.

Peter Davison, on viewing Daleks and the TARDIS in the Bow Room of the Palace said the sight was “the most incongruous thing I’ve ever seen.”

Matt Smith, who brought his mother Lynne along to the reception, mentioned how it felt for him  to be leaving the show.

Just seeing my old friends that I work with and the kids and the Daleks here and you think it was a great job, but I left. No use crying over spilt milk. Who knows, in 50 years if they will let me come back, I will. As of Christmas Day it’s on to Peter (Capaldi). I wish him all the best.

Jenna Coleman also revealed that she has already shot her first scenes with incoming Doctor Peter Capaldi!

Buckingham Palace Visit 2

The reception was also attended by children from two local primary schools in Cardiff who had competed to make the Queen her very own TARDIS. One included an illuminated crown on the roof and dog flap for the  Queen’s corgis!
