Camp Nano - Day 7

Today's word count: 2,543

Wow. The first week of Camp Nanowrimo has come to an end!

I was happy with today's writing. By 11:15 this morning I was done (with today's word count goal). I got up a few minutes past 7 this morning and managed to squeeze out a couple hundred words (almost 300) trying to get comfortable stretched out on the couch with my Alphasmart on my lap. Then tiredness hit  because I didn't get to bed until after 12:30 and closer to 1am last night. So I went back to bed for a bit, getting up again at 9 and straight back to writing.

Lots of unexpected stuff happened since I'm not really using my notes anymore - they're pretty much used up. So I had lots of fun writing up the end to the first part of my story.  Pretty much everything that happened I didn't plan at all, so it kept me interested and intrigued where it was going next - to all you non-writers, that might sound weird - that I don't know what's going to happen in my own story - how is that possible you might ask? You're the one writing the story! I don't really know...but that's what happens. To me anyways!

With a few breaks - like having a shower and having some cereal, I'm super happy with my early finish to today's word count. And surprised as to what is going to happen to my main character next time I revisit him!

Tomorrow I'll start on The Emperor's side of the story. Exciting!

Camp Nano - Day 6

Today's word count: 2,738

It seemed that Day 6 involved more napping than writing. I woke up   at 8am and got myself a cup of tea. And I had every intention to start writing. But the internet beckoned. And then there was a discussion with my husband as to what to do for breakfast. We ended up walking our dog at 10:30 to a McDonald's nearby for breakfast after looking at other breakfast options (Burger King, ABC Country Restaurant and IHOP (International House of Pancakes for those who might not know)  - did you know that if you type in IHOP.ca, it doesn't come up with the Canadian IHOP website, but bizarrely links for atheist books came up on Google. Huh. In any case we settled on McDonalds which is about a fifteen minute walk from our house, and we walked with our dog. We had a big breakfast and then walked back home. And it was getting warm.

Got home and got down to writing. I went upstairs to write in bed for some peace and quiet. Then my husband came upstairs and lay down for a nap, after our big breakfast. It was 12:20 and I was getting sleepy myself. So I thought I'd just lie down for a quick nap.  An hour and a half later I forced myself up and got back to writing. I went out on our porch to write in the nice weather.
We're going out to see Russell Brand tonight so I really wanted to get my word count out before we head out later tonight. I just knew that when we get home at about 10:30 tonight that I wouldn't feel like writing 2,500 words.

But I got on a roll and surprised myself by surpassing my 2,500 word minimum!

Camp Nano Day 5 - How Time Flies!

Wordcount (so far) today: 2,895

I can't believe it's Day 5 of Camp Nanowrimo already! These first five days have simply flown by!

Since I wasn't working today I thought I would be able to get all my writing done and be finished well before noon, getting up early and getting right down to it. Well, I did get up early. But it went all downhill from there. I woke up at 7:30am and instead of sitting straight down to write, I went on the internet and checked a few things. Bad start. Then I went and did all the dishes that I'd left from last night, knowing I wasn't working today. I got that out of the way by 8:30. And because it's supposed to be a high of 24 degrees (celcius) today, I took the dog out for a walk at 8:30 when it was still nice, fresh, breezy and cool. So cool out I actually had to wear my hoodie!

By 9, I was back in the house. Do you think I started writing then? Nope. I was hungry so I made breakfast first (fried egg sandwich - my favourite - a single fried egg between two pieces of buttered toast, salt, pepper, ketchup - YUM.). I followed breakfast with an iced latte from our gattling gun of a Tassimo coffee machine (it sounds like a machine gun when it's getting the espresso and milk out of the little pods). Actually, I didn't have a real iced latte, because I didn't have any ice. Instead of using the skinny latte 'concentrated skim milk product' pod, because I'm leery of food that calls itself a 'product' - like Cool Whip is an 'edible oil product' mmm, sounds appetizing! or cheese slices are a 'processed cheese product'. YUM.

Anyways, how I make my iced lattes is after the espresso, I just fill a large mug with actual cold 1% milk (and sometimes a bit of sugar). And that was my downfall. I know that for some reason, lattes from our Tassimo machine always make me sleepy, rather than wake me up like you think coffee would do (especially espresso!). After only writing 700 words of today's word count, at 10am I headed upstairs
for a nap. At 11:30 I came back downstairs feeling worse than I had before my nap and tried to get to at least 1,500 words. Yep, I hadn't even made it to the actual Camp NaNo daily word count goal of 1,612 yet!

And then the internet distracted me.  Again. So I decided to take my trusty Alphasmart 3000 to the little park at the bottom of my townhouse complex and sit at one of the newly installed picnic tables and write outside in the nice weather, taking my dog along with me so we could both get some fresh air, and a healthy dose of ants, and I could at least make it to my own personal daily goal of 2,500 words. It was all going well, until a group of kids followed by two women came to the park (there's a small play ground there). and they sat at my table and started talking loudly in Spanish. There went my nice peace and quiet. And I only had another 300 words to make it to my 2,500! So I trudged back to the house (it was getting warmer out at that point) and sat back down and got back to it.

And I'm proud to say that by 3pm(ish) today I've reached my highest word count so far! (see the top of this post). I'm going to take a bit of a break now, (maybe read something) but I'm hoping to maybe write some more later and hopefully even make it to my originally planned goal of 5000 words today which I was beginning to think earlier was going to be a pipe dream.

Wishing all my fellow Campers good luck!

Wordcount total: 14,890
EDIT: After 2 back to back 20 Nano Word sprints tonight ( I've increased my wordcount for the day.
Word count today now:  4, 488 - another 1,593 words from earlier!
and Total word count: 16,483

Camp Nano - Day 4

Word count today: 2,561

I'm proud of myself. Most of my 2,561 words came not from my 5 or so pages or notes, but just from me rambling on and on...and on. And my MC (main character if you'll remember from yesterday) had memories about things that happened to him in my first novel, Under A Starlit Sky. And describing what the city is like where he's from. Yep.

My goal for tomorrow, since I'm not working, is 5000 words (or possibly more!) I'm finding 2,500 words/ day tough. And I also figured out that I can write 1000 words in 45 minutes. I tried for that amount in half an hour but that didn't work out. I'm aiming for 17,000 something by the end of the weekend! Wish me luck!

In other news, I now have my Camp NaNoWriMo Cabin as of today! yay! What's a Camp NaNoWriMo Cabin you ask? Well, since Camp NaNoWriMo is like regular NaNoWriMo except during July and August, the time of year when people go out camping and roast marshmallows and make s'mores and get eaten alive by mosquitoes. Well, writers taking part in CN (I don't really want to have to keep spelling that out) are assigned to 'cabins' - with 6 other participants - chosen either randomly, or based on the same genre as you're writing, or people who are within the same age range as you. And these cabins are actually an awesome message board format. Where you can write messages in a central 'campfire' message box, which then is populated in a small speech bubble box next to your name/profile and picture. And that's how you communicate with your cabin mates. And your 6 cabin mates are there for encouragement, or commiserations, during this long month of writing craziness that I'm taking part in!  I'm the only person who has posted so far in my cabin, but my cabin mates are all in other time zones (and one person from Europe!) so hopefully they'll be more talkative when it's a normal time of the day for them (and they realize they've been assigned to a cabin finally!).
Off to do the next best thing to actually being at camp (writing or no), i'm going to put some s'mores ice cream topping on top of some vanilla frozen yogurt! Yum! (besides the fact it has those horrible hard and crunchy mini marshmallows like the ones you get in Lucky Charms (and not even in any fun shapes and colours!), and that the chunks of 'graham cookie' are tasteless lumps of brown crunchy stuff. The dark chocolate pieces are nice though!

Camp Nano - Day 3

Word count today: 2,570.
Today was tough writing. I think its because I'm still using my notes. Once I get through using my notes and am totally flying by the seat of my pants (or 'pantsing' it as some people refer to it!) I think it will be a lot better. But on the positive side, my main character is still in the place where he found himself right at the beginning of the story! And there's a whole world outside for him, and the other main characters, to explore! So that can only be a good thing!  Except about 9,300 words into my story, I realized my MMC (that's main main character) hadn't yet introduced himself (or been asked who he was!). Oops.
And I had a nice reward for an evening of writing - sushi! I'd been craving sushi all afternoon, but there isn't any sushi places within walking distance of my work, so had to settle for a chicken salad for lunch.

I'm thinking of having kind of 3 separate stories - well, telling the stories of 3 different people (or groups of people, as in the case of my MMC and his two companions) and then having them come together and become interlinked when they all eventually encounter each other. Does that even make sense? and do you think that sounds like a good idea?
I'll end with my total word count so far on  Day 3. I have to say i'm quite happy with it!

Camp Nano - Day 2

Jeez, here I am, 9:30 at night and I just remembered I still had to write my blog entry for Day 2 0f Camp NaNoWriMo!

Word count for the day: 2,550. I have to admit, getting this 2500 words was a slight struggle. Nothing I was too concerned about, but it was more my attention span, than my trying to find the words I needed.

Maybe that had to do with the fact when I woke up this morning at 6:15am this morning for work and feeling like a zombie. I was so tired this morning that after eating my yogurt, I went to take my spoon to the kitchen area where I work. When I got to the kitchen area (which is only about 100 feet away from my desk) I stood there wondering why I was standing there, only to then realize that I hadn't actually brought my spoon to wash! And that's where my mind has been basically all day.
So when I sat down with my few pages of notes for my novel, I kept hopping up and down. To get a drink. To go to the washroom. To change seats.  To adjust my cushions. To get some more to drink. Then go to the washroom again. And then I would type for a few minutes. Then watch a few minutes of The Big Bang Theory which my husband had on in the background and which seemed much, much louder than usual.
Finally, I passed my daily word count goal for 2,500 words.
And so that brings me to the total wordcount so far.

Word count total: 6,864
(If I was doing the minimum word count required to reach 50,000 words by the end of the month, I would only be at 3,224!)

How's all my other Campter

It's Official! Camp NaNoWriMo - Day 1

Well, it's finally arrived. And last night, half an hour before the clock struck midnight, I highly doubted I would be able to stay awake in order to start writing The Clockwork Universe. But when the clock on my computer turned from 11:59 to 12:00, my fingers started tapping away at the keys. Mind you, I only got a paragraph down on the page (or rather, on my Alphasmart 3000) before I dragged myself up to bed, in order to get up early this morning and start writing in earnest with a clear head and not a sleep addled brain.

And while my plan was to get up early, it certainly wasn't my idea to be woken up by an irritating crow that wouldn't stop cawing loudly from what seemed like right outside my window! because of that I dragged myself out of bed at eleven minutes past 7 in the morning, glancing in mirror at my puffy eyes and went downstairs to put on the kettle for a cup of tea. I dutifully didn't turn on my laptop, fearing that if I did, I would be distracted by the worst thing possible for a writer - the internet. Instead I turned on my Alphasmart with a quick touch of the on button and seconds later was typing away. And before 10:30 in the morning I had already written 2595 words! Almost 100 words above my daily goal of 2500 !

My main character has just met some of the other main characters, his companions you could say. And just found out about the world he's stumbled into. So far so good! and then I stopped writing because we took our dog for a nice long fairly early morning (10am) walk through forested trails and down to a beach, seeing how it's a beautiful sunny day. All the while with me thinking about my story and not having brought anything (like a small notebook) to write stuff down in. Despite not having too much of an outline (just a general plot idea) I think its going quite well!  Since coming back from the walk with the dog i've written 2,934 words. Well above my daily word count!

So i'd say today has been quite a success! Lets hope tomorrow and the 29 days after that will be just as good!

I'm looking to give my Alphasmart 3000 a little bit of a facelift, as the person I'd bought it from spray painted it silver with regular (and not plastic) spraypaint, which has started to rub off in some areas. I'm looking to paint it a lovely purple on the top, and black on the bottom. Should be spiffy! I just need to go look for some plastic adhesive spray paint.

Are you doing Camp NaNoWriMo? If so, how are you doing so far on this first day?

2 more days til Camp! - NaNoWriMo that is

I'm gearing up to get ready to start writing The Clockwork Universe in 36 hours and counting! I may even start writing it on midnight on Monday August 1st... but seeing how it's a holiday long weekend here in Canada on Monday, really I can start writing anytime!

I'm super excited. I've been going over the scant amount of notes i've made, plot concept, inspiration, snippits of dialogue and sentences and my character profiles. I'm not planning out this novel nearly as much as Under a Starlit Sky (or should I be saying  planning hardly at all?). Wish me luck! I'll try and blog every day about my writing that day. And the wordcount.
I don't think i'll have chapters right off the bat. I think i'll probably break it down into chapters at the end. But oh! I just thought, I need to go find quotes relating to my subject matter for my chapter titles. Just like how I found star related quotes by famous historical people for the

Changed blog feed to my other site

As i'm going to be starting to blog during Camp Nanowrimo in August while writing my next novel in 31 days, i've changed the blog feed from my http://www.underastarlitsky.com website, to the website for the novel i'm going to writing in August - The Clockwork Universe (http://www.theclockworkuniverse.com).

Hope you will enjoy following me as I write about the adventure of writing a novel in 31 days!

Camp NaNoWriMo - August 2011!

This summer is the first year of Camp NaNoWriMo. Camp NaNoWriMo is the same as the regular well-beloved NaNoWriMo that takes places every November. Except Camp takes place in July and August (two separate months). Since it's the first year, July is more of the beta testing month, which isn't fully functional yet. But August, the Camp NaNoWriMo website will be up and running with all the bells and whistles!

And so, instead of waiting until November this year to start writing The Clockwork Universe, i've decided to take part in Camp NaNoWriMo this August and write (at least!) 50,000 words of The Clockwork Universe - hopefully much more!

I'm very excited to get started! Unlike Under a Starlit Sky, my first novel through NaNoWriMo, that I had planned out with copious notes turned into a nearly step-by-step outline of the novel from beginning to end, i'm going to be writing The Clockwork Universe with only a handful of pages of notes, comments, fragments. And of course, character profiles.

And starting next month on August 1st, I'll blog as much as I can during the writing and keep all of you up to date with how it's going!

Another reason i'm doing August rather than November, is it has 31 days (instead of just 30), giving that extra day to write, and to hit the 50,000 word threshold! It also means the daily average expected word count is slightly less. Just 54 words less, but hey, that's 54 words!
Next post - August 1st here I come!
