2024 Reading Challenge (Get Inspired to Read More!)

The 2024 Reading Challenge offers monthly booklists to inspire you to read more. Slay your reading goals this year!

Every year, I put together a fun reading challenge that we can take on together, friends. I love to escape into an entertaining book, but often, I don’t set aside time to read or can’t decide what to read next. Can you relate?

The 2024 Reading Challenge to the rescue. This easy challenge will help you stay motivated and provide you with plenty of reading inspiration!

How Does it Work?

This reading challenge is super easy and convenient! Each month, I’ll post a booklist based on the monthly theme.

Choose a book (or two or three if you’re a bookworm) from the list and make it your read for the month. By the end of the year, you’ll have read at least a dozen books. Go you!

Do I have to read only the books on your list?

Good question! Of course, if you don’t like my book recommendations, please find a book that matches your tastes and preferences based on the monthly theme’s reading prompt.

The main goal is to read more this year. So, you do you!

How will I know when you post a new booklist?

What are fiction and nonfiction book pairings? They’re two books that share a connection, and when read together, totally elevates your reading experience!

Think of fiction and nonfiction book pairings like wine pairings (a bold Cab Sav and dark chocolate or a crisp Sav Blanc and sharp cheddar) or your favorite food combinations (mac and cheese or bacon and eggs). Some things just go better together.

In books, if you’re reading a fiction title, try pairing it with a nonfiction book!

To make this literary combo work, find a common thread between the two genres. The connection could be a similar subject that relates to the novel you’re reading. Or the nonfiction book could give you factual background knowledge about the setting, time period, or characters in your fiction story.

For this list, I paired a bestseller (in fiction or nonfiction) with a related book that you may not have come across but is so worth the read!

What is fiction vs nonfiction?

As a writer and a reader, even I had to double-check exactly what makes a book fiction or nonfiction. Basically, it comes down to whether the story is imagined or based on facts.

Fiction refers to made-up narratives in which the storyline, characters, and events evolve from the author’s creativity. You’ll find plot twists, imaginative settings, and characters that may not exist in reality.

Nonfiction sticks with the facts (and only the facts), presenting events, people, and concepts based on real-life experiences that can be verified as true. Nonfiction provides readers with accurate and objective real-world accounts and includes genres like biography, history, science, and journalism.

Best Books About Witches of All Time

When I first searched “best books about witches fiction,” I quickly discovered that I’m not the only one who enjoys reading this about this curiously captivating theme!

With so many choices across many genres, from historical fiction to young adult to non-fiction accounts, it wasn’t easy to select only a few titles for this list. So, with today’s book recommendations as a start, I promise to return to this list every October and keep adding to it with the abundance of witchy-themed books worth reading well after midnight by the light of a flickering candle.

Let’s start by getting an idea of your reading speed to determine how many pages and how many books you can read in a set time period. This reading calculator helps you set realistic monthly and yearly reading goals.

How does the Reading Speed Calculator work?

In the first method, enter how long it typically takes to read a page in your current book. Then, adjust the timeframes to see how much you can read in a day, week, month, or year. Remember that the longer timeframes assume you’re reading every day without skipping.

The second method on this calculator uses the standard measurement of words per minute (WPM). You can estimate by entering the average range for most readers of between 250-300 WPM.

However, if you’re curious about a precise calculation of how fast or slow you read, follow these steps for the simplest way to measure WPM.

Choose a full page of text in a typical book you may read.Set a timer for one minute and start reading.When the minute is up, note the last word you read.Count the total words you read. Or estimate by counting the words in one line and multiplying that number by how many lines you read in the timed session.Your WPM is the total number of words you count as read in your timed minute.

How does the Reading Time Calculator work?

This calculator determines the total reading time in hours and minutes that it will take you to finish a book. Then, it considers the amount of time you can dedicate each day to reading to figure out how many days it will take you. 

Now that you have an idea of your reading speed, you can use that information to get an accurate idea of how much reading time you’ll need to set aside each day to reach your goal of, for example, being prepared to join the discussion at your book club.

Now, let’s stretch your reading goals a little further and answer the question, “How many books can I read in a year?” Get ready to say yes to all the reading challenges you can handle and end the year with an all-time high book total!

How does the Reading Challenge Calculator work?

The drop-down menu lets you choose from two questions.

Start with the first question, “How many books will I read?”Next, set your average daily reading time (which you may have determined above).And, ta-daa, you see how many pages you’ll read in a day.Go to the next section that asks, “Decide how long will your reading challenge be?” I recommend selecting a year. However, this calculator gives you choices ranging from “a day” to, believe it or not, “the rest of your life.” (Talk about life goals!) Also, you can select either the Goodreads or the StoryGraph reading challenges.Now, scroll back up and select the second question, “How fast should I read?” to get an idea for setting a daily time duration and total page-read goals.
