Magical New Series

I'm thrilled to announce I have an upcoming book in a fun new series - Carnival of Mysteries - a shared-element story (like the Magic Emporium), but in this case, the MCs in each book will visit Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special.

The first 4 books (of a total of 16) will be :

Crow’s Fate , by Kim Fielding - July 12
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5PNQ1NY

Step Right Up by L.A. Witt - July 19
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5S7SW3X

Magic Burning by Kaje Harper - July 26
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5TVRH9C/

Night-blooming Hearts by Megan Derr - Aug 2
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5SZKG16

In my book, Magic Burning :
(GR link - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...)

Alan
I haven't been out with a guy in the last two years. Partly because I'm a gay elementary-school teacher in a fairly small, conservative town. Partly because I'm a sorcerer, and dating ordinary humans only leads to trouble. Sleeping with one though? That's doable, so when my birdbrained familiar Sunny lines up a tall, muscular firefighter for me, I'm not going to say no. Just once, though. Maybe twice. I don't need more trouble in my life.

Jason
I don't regret moving back to my hometown and my big family. Well, not much. I'm not out to them, and I miss the anonymity of the big city, but I like the local fire house and the slower-paced life. Still, when I see my niece's teacher, Mr. Hiranchai, in gray sweatpants talking to a mini-parrot on his shoulder, something inside me (or maybe something in front of me) perks up and says "I want that one." I can't have an actual boyfriend, but I sure wouldn't mind getting laid, and Alan's slim, dark-haired, smart-assed style rings all my bells.

It's no surprise we turn out to be great together, even if my job and his responsibilities make it hard to find time. It is a surprise when I realize I want more than just an occasional night. But some weird fires out in the brush keep us firefighters hopping, and when this strange carnival comes to town and lands me with a pair of magical doll shoes, life gets truly confusing. There's more to Alan than he's telling me, and I'm getting a bad, bad feeling about all this.

Magic Burning is a story in the Necromancer universe, 60 years after Marked by Death, and is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. This book contains a snarky, matchmaking bird, a lonely young teacher, and a gay firefighter finally coming out to his large family.

A word to my wide readers - this series will begin in KU (sorry, folks), but will go wide 6 months after all the 16 stories are released.

Magic Burning is out!

Magic Burning - my story in the Carnival of Mysteries - is now available.

snarky matchmaking familiar
closeted firefighter dodging his big family
elementary teacher and sorcerer, of sorts
fire elemental on the loose
a Carnival where all things are possible

. Check out Magic Burning on Amazon (sorry folks, not wide until the series contract us up in about 9 months, but paper is available on Amazon) - [Buy on Amazon US]

excerpt:

Chapter 3 - Alan

Jason picked up his menu. “So, are we going for the known goodness of chicken, or having an adventure?”

“Adventure, definitely.” I scanned mine. “Shrimp fettuccini, then.” The seafood wouldn’t be Bellingham-just-caught, like my mother insisted on, but should still be fresh.

“Steak for me.”

“That’s an adventure?”

His lips twitched. “Could be, depending how hard they cook it.”

I was struck by the shape of his face, less angular and more square-looking without the shadow of stubble. “You shaved. I like it, although I like the rugged look too. Or you could rock a close-cut beard. Have you ever tried one?”

“Can’t do it. The mask of our breathing apparatus might not seal right over a beard, and I’m kinda fond of oxygen.”

A sudden arrow struck me under the ribs, the realization that he sometimes wore that mask to keep from dying in the middle of a fire. What am I getting myself into?

Just sex, hopefully. I calmed myself and focused on the bulge of his biceps under the T-shirt sleeves and the width of his chest. Hot sex. “A pity. I like a beard on my thighs.” That got me another flush across his fair skin. “Just to be clear, I’m gay, hoping you’re some form of gay-bi-pan. I’m definitely hoping you’re interested in exploring our horizontal, and vertical, options.” There, get this on the correct solid footing, no emotional mess.

This story was great fun to write, and the first two books out show how the common Carnival element can be played with in different ways. Magic Burning stands alone, but expect a few Necromancer cameos, despite the 60 year jump forward in time. :)

I hope readers will enjoy this one. I think it's going to be one of my own favorites.

Out today - "Midnight in the Renaissance Elevator"

Midnight in The Renaissance Elevator: A Charity Anthology - Release day for this charity anthology https://www.amazon.com/Midnight-Renai...

Imagine, if you will, a hotel elevator lobby. On one side, two normal, well-behaved elevators carry guests up and down.
On the other side, a lurching, scraping, door-slamming, foot-grabbing, malevolent conveyance.

It's almost midnight, you press the lobby button, and the doors only open on that elevator. Do you wait for another? Do you get in and ride the haunted Renaissance elevator at midnight?

My story is a contemporary tinged with a hint of the mysterious - Saved by the Bell - Kyle leaves his boyfriend sleeping to head out to a get-together, but when he convinces himself to ride the "death" elevator, it takes him up, not down. There, a hulking teen athlete gets on, hoodie pulled up, not looking happy about seeing Kyle. Thoughts of Kyle's teen tormentors years ago make his heart race...

29 authors give you our take on the haunted elevator in paranormal, fantasy, and contemporary short stories (most with HEAs) - come, ride the elevator if you dare.

On AZ in ebook and paper, and in KU with proceeds going to the Trevor Project.

A new Charity Anthology for one of our own

Today is the release day for Love & Hope: A Benefit Anthology for HM Wolfe, who is facing medical and financial challenges.

My story in this one is a 5,000 word standalone werewolf story, sweet, cute, and low-heat, about two men who finally can't ignore the attraction that has been simmering. Oh, and kittens.

26 authors contributed stories. The anthology will be available on AZ and also in KU for a limited time.

You can find the anthology here: https://www.amazon.com/Love-Hope-Anthology-H-M-Wolfe-ebook/dp/B0CQLF41ZT/

my Subpar Hero is loose in the world

Transparent Is a Color is now available on Amazon and in KU - a standalone lighthearted superhero adventure that is part of the Subparheroes universe.

I saw this cover pic and Perry popped into my head - not a flying-hero Peregrine-the-Falcon, like his mother wanted, rescuing stranded children and pulling people out of burning buildings, but "the Interior Decorator" - a guy who can change the color of your curtains, or your sweatshirt. Perry thinks his power's pretty useless, but when he spots a bomb, it brings Nova City Bomb Squad Sergeant Deckard into the picture. And together, with the help of Perry's disdained power, these two might just save some lives and find romance.

* opposites attract
* not-so-super hero action and mystery
* slow burn
* low angst adventure
* a talented bomb-sniffing dog
* modest age gap

(content warning for abduction, some violence, low-key parental emotional abuse)

You can find Transparent Is a Color on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/Transparent-Co...

Upcoming books and great new covers

I have gorgeous covers for some new books in the works.

Of course, the next book to come will be Once an Alpha - my latest Hidden Wolves novella. This one is intended to stand alone, but readers of the series will recognize the bad old days of the packs before Unacceptable Risk.
David and Rob thought they'd left pack life behind, and could finally explore what they meant to one another. But once an Alpha, always an Alpha.
This book releases wide on July 20th and is in preorder HERE now.

........

Then look at this awesome cover for my next Carnival of Mysteries book Magic Escaping - releasing Aug 7th.

This is a sequel to Magic Burning - Alan is abducted by a shadowy government agency, but Jason, Sunny, and Alan's friends are not letting him go without a fight. Especially when it turns out that grabbing Alan is just part of a far bigger plot.

You can preorder Magic Escaping on Amazon HERE.
.........

And in October, I will have another book in the Road to Rocktoberfest series. Missing Chord is a second chances, age gap romance releasing October 11. I saw this guy's face and needed to write his story.

Missing Chord is available for preorder on Amazon HERE
..............

I hope to have a couple of other books before the end of the year, but more on those later. :)

Magic Escaping is out!

Release day for Magic Escaping - the sequel to Magic Burning in the Carnival of Mysteries. I had so much fun getting Alan in trouble and letting Jason, Alan's friends, and Sunny, of course, try to get him out.

Kidnapping Alan may turn out to be the biggest mistake NSEP ever made. His boyfriend Jason's no superhero, Sunny's just a bird, and the rest of Alan's friends are Healers and an elderly sorcerer, but they'll do what it takes to get Alan free, and maybe save the world.

New FREE Necromancer novella - Saved by the Rat

For the month of February, you can download 7 Workplace-romance novellas from various authors for free from Book Funnel. And when I was asked to contribute, what I came up with was a contemporary-paranormal (was supposed to be just contemporary. Oops) set in the modern-day Necromancer world.

Robin
I’ve been managing my uncle’s secondhand building-supply center long enough to know that I need to make an impression on new employees first. I’m five-foot-two and skinny and look younger than twenty-five. I start with the power suit and the power attitude, until I get the upper hand. Problem is, with Alaric, I’ve been bossing him around for a week wearing the stupid tie and shiny shoes, and I don’t think he’s impressed yet.

Alaric
The kid running this store doesn’t know that dangerous artifacts were dumped here in the clearance of a local sorcerer’s house. Robin’s human. To him, magic’s just a trick and a joke. My familiar Harry and I know better. If I don’t find the missing grimoire bound in human skin before someone less scrupulous does, we’re all in trouble. I need to ignore Robin’s cute ass and keep searching, although that ass gives me an idea for a distraction if I need one.

Saved by the Rat is a standalone 17,000-word story set in the Necromancer universe in modern times. (content warning for violence)

You can find my story and 6 more brand new novellas HERE - https://books.bookfunnel.com/workplacemmromance/3jpwl1296p

* Kaje Harper - Saved by the Rat
* Gabbi Grey - Ginger in the City
* Michelle Dare - Three Friends Wanting More
* D.C. Emerson - You're Ours
* Rinda Elliott - The Spy Who Vexed Me
* Skylar M. Cates - Fires and Liars
* Madalyn George - Todd's Home: A Hampstead Valley Novella

All these novellas are intended to be stand-alone introductions to one of the author's worlds, mainly contemporary. (I kind of broke the rules. It's Harry the rat's fault.)

Newsletter signup is optional.

I hope folks enjoy these.

"Saved by the Rat" now available wide

For those who didn't pick up my 17,000 word contemporary Necromancer story Saved by the Rat when it was free, the novella is now available wide - https://books2read.com/SavedByTheRatKaje

Meet Robin - short, bespectacled, young manager of his uncle's store and no-one's pushover.

Meet Alaric - temporary employee of said store with more to worry about than a cute, self-important manager. Namely, finding an evil grimoire bound in human skin.

Meet Harry - Alaric's rat familiar with a nose for magic.

Add workplace mutual attraction, a break-in, dark sorcerers, and you have Saved by the Rat.

This story is intended to stand alone for those not yet familiar with Necromancer but it carries the spirit of the series, set in modern days like the Magic duo. I hope readers enjoy this lightweight tale. (And tail. My apologies to those not fond of rats. Harry insisted he was not a ferret or anything but a proud rat, thank you very much.) On sale for $0.99 (or equivalent) on most vendors.
