Just yesterday, I reread the whole Gold Train for the first time since its original publication in 2012, and had an unexpected blast. I was engrossed in the adventure and all the story’s twists and turns. I rediscovered how much I enjoy my two characters, Jade and Alexei, and how much I appreciate their otherworldly, yet forbidden, relationship! They are so 5D, so out of this world… yet firmly with their feet on the ground! They are amazingly blessed and strangely cursed at the same time; they are locked into this reality, yet free and united beyond it.

Chapter 9
My eyes flew open. Through the splitting headache, I recalled the events of last night: the ball, freezing, confused and alone in the cold St. Petersburg night, Alexei coming to the rescue, his hotel suite, lots of wine and vodka, presumably to warm up. Then… then… I felt my ears starting to burn. I couldn’t believe what I’ve done next! It wasn’t really like me. I… I loved Paul, didn’t I?
“Jade, are you awake?” Alexei’s buttery baritone floated into the bedroom and although my eyes were open for the past fifteen minutes, I didn’t say anything. Instead, I closed them and pretended to be asleep, frantically going in my mind through different how-to-slip-out-unnoticed scenarios. Maybe he’ll just leave and go to do whatever it is he came to do in this city so I could make my escape, I thought hopefully.
He tiptoed to the bed and leaned close to me. His scent drifted into my nostrils, tickling my senses and driving me crazy with desire. It cost me all my self-control to hold it together as I concentrated on breathing as evenly and naturally as possible. I think I passed the test of a sleeping person, because he kissed me on the cheek and quietly shut the bedroom door. I exhaled and sat up. Then, I heard him ordering breakfast.
My plan was to grab my things the moment he stepped out of the room, slip out quietly, catch a cab, get my stuff from Vera’s and escape to Moscow. It looked like I had no luck in this fairytale beautiful city. ……
Chapter 10
As I waited for the elevator, I decided to take a look at my flushed face in the cosmetics mirror I carried in my purse. And that’s when I realized that I left it in Alexei’s suite. All my money and documents were in the purse too, which meant I had to go back and face him once more. And although seeing that sensuous smile again was too much to endure, there was no way around it.
Reluctantly, I retraced my steps to his door. My hand on the doorknob, I was about to turn it, when I overheard Alexei’s voice. He seemed to be talking on the phone to someone he called Comrade General. I stopped, puzzled, and without thinking, cupped my ear firmly against the door, an old sound-amplifying trick of spies and domestic servants of all times and cultures.
As Alexei’s phone conversation progressed, I liked it less and less.
“She has left to get her things from Vera Golitsina. But I am pretty confident I got her,” he said quietly.
Then he paused, listening.
“No, not really. I believe we are good,” he responded to some unknown question.
“Slushayus’! Yes, I’ll keep you posted.”
Again, there was a pause. Then, Alexei said, “Yes, I realize that we are running out of time. I appreciate your confidence in me, Comrade General!”
I stood by the door frozen, digesting the new and very unpleasant turn of events, when I heard his footsteps. He was heading towards the door. I crossed my arms and waited. When he opened the door, his face registered a momentary surprise, but immediately snapped back to its usual, composed expression.
“Jade, what are you still doing here?” he said evenly. ……
Chapter 11
On the sleeper express back to Moscow, I noticed a strange man spending an awful lot of time next to my compartment. I thought that was odd and decided to check if I was just being paranoid or that I was indeed being followed. I pretended to head to the restroom, but instead, slipped into the connector area between two carriages. There, I stood quietly in the corner waiting, as a woman in a silk robe opened the door into the restroom and went in.
I could see through the glass screen that the man followed me along the narrow passage and pretended that he was waiting his turn. A couple of minutes later, the woman in a robe came out. The man looked surprised and quickly dashed inside to check that I wasn’t hiding somewhere, which obviously was impossible, since these accommodations are so incredibly tiny.
I watched as he re-emerged into the corridor, throwing confused glances in both directions and trying to figure out which way I could’ve disappeared. At that moment, I opened the connector door and casually walked past him as if I’d just returned from visiting another carriage. The man seemed to relax and slowly followed me back.
I went inside my compartment and locked the door. There was no doubt – I was being followed and very sloppily at that. But by whom? I didn’t want to think it was Alexei who sent this idiot. No, it wasn’t him. He’d definitely send someone brighter. But if it wasn’t him, then who? Could it be my tricky hostess, Duchess Vera? All this was starting to sound like a nightmarish spy movie. ……
Chapter 12
I stepped inside my hotel room, put the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door and locked it very carefully. I needed some time to think and meditate. After a long and luxurious bath, I ordered dinner and lounged on the sofa, flipping through channels and thinking.
It was hard not to like Comrade General, despite the way he brought me in. Smart, powerful, can take a calculated risk, heart seems in the right place… In a word, my kind of a guy. ……
Chapter 13
I had no appetite, so I went straight to my room, again hung the “Do Not Disturb” sign and locked the door. I needed to think. I opened a bottle of red wine and sat on the sofa. This was a predicament with huge potential consequences not just for me, but for the whole country of Russia and possibly for the entire world. I sipped the wine and stared out the window of my hotel room. Down there, on a lively Moscow street, the day went on as if nothing happened, as if no catastrophe was on the horizon. But I knew better…unless I did something to prevent it.
And that’s when I remembered the Gypsy’s strange prophecies, which were materializing one by one. She predicted that I would miss my St. Petersburg train and that I’d go to a ball and meet a prince. With the thought of Alexei, my heart immediately jumped in my chest and I involuntarily pressed my hand against it, as if afraid this vital organ might inadvertently escape from my body’s confines.
Clenching my teeth, I willed myself to get back on topic. So, what else did Rada say? Yes, she said that Svetlana would not be able to complete her investigation, that someone else would do it for her. Now I finally understood the glance she gave me while uttering these words. That someone who’d finish Svetlana’s work was me!
The question was, what other predictions were about to come true? ……

He looked up and wiped the sweat streaming down his face with a trembling hand. Eight a.m. Baghdad sun knew no mercy even at this hour. He must concentrate, just a few more minutes! He stood next to his shabby, dusty Corolla, with faded taxi markings on it. The alley was deserted and deathly quiet, as expected. But just down the hill, barely thirty meters away and fully visible from his vantage point, was the intersection of the busiest road in the city.
Almost time. They should be here any moment.
He took an envelope out of his pocket and almost decided to leave it by the gate of the nearest house, securing it with a rock, when he saw an American press crew – a cameraman and a tall, slim woman, disguised as a man (who was she kidding?) – setting up their camera next to the intersection.
He simply couldn’t believe his luck! Allah is merciful, he hasn’t deserted him in this hour of judgment! He cast a quick glance around, and another stroke of luck! A young boy, no more than eight or nine, rounded the corner, carrying a heavy jug of water, and made his way through the alley.
“Hey, boy! Come here, little boy,” he called, waving temptingly his last two dollar bills. “Want to make some real American money?”
The boy set his water jug on the ground and cautiously edged closer.
The man handed him the envelope. “I want you to give this after the explosion to that pretty lady dressed as a man. Do you see her?”
The boy’s shrewd eyes shot in the direction of the American press crew, and he nodded, giggling. Then, another thought made him frown.
“What explosion?” he asked suspiciously.
“You’ll see,” said the mysterious man. “The most important thing, stay hidden right here until after it happens. Understood?”
The boy nodded.
The man gave him an encouraging smile and got into his Corolla. Time!
He started the motor and quietly rolled closer to the intersection. Immediately, he heard the rumbling noise of a huge American truck, then he saw it. Praise Allah! Yet another stroke of luck – the monstrosity was full of soldiers. A big man with sergeant’s insignia sat in the cabin, next to the driver. Good! He’ll aim right at him. An officer is even better than mere soldiers.
“Allaaaahu Akbar!” He slammed his foot on the accelerator and with a desperate cry launched his car forward, like a missile.
The big sergeant in the front seat turned his head towards him. The last thing the man’s mind registered was surprise in sergeant’s blue eyes.

Being in the right place at just the wrong time is my specialty. I mastered this fine art to perfection. My name is Jade Snow, I am an international journalist, and four days ago I arrived to Baghdad together with my crew to do a documentary about the Iraqi war.
The first two days here normally feel like your lungs are about to explode from the ever-present thick yellow dust. Then, you get used to it. The key is to cover your face and drink lots and lots of bottled water. Bottled, because you obviously can’t trust what’s coming out of a tap.
In four days, I’ve seen enough Green Zone to last me a lifetime, but little else. The Green Zone is by far the nicest place in Baghdad. Some of the palm trees have been toppled by explosions and you can still see traces of shelling on the walls of the opulent former Saddam’s Palace, presently the US military headquarters.
But our luxury hotel’s swimming pool area is always full. You can get a chilled beer or a margarita served by the pool side, blond American women strut here in bikinis, and American businessmen shake hands on the latest reconstruction deals.
My hot-blooded Latin cameraman, Alejandro, has not been wasting his time. While I’ve been trying to figure out how to get us out of the Green Zone and into action, he’s been spending quality time in the company of a confident-looking brunette, a reporter for one of the networks, and a smiley army PR specialist. Later, I spotted him whispering little nothings to a cute, blond private, who kept blushing and throwing adoring glances at “the glamorous media man.” I didn’t mind. Let him enjoy himself today. Work starts tomorrow.
It’s very different outside this heavily guarded area – desolate, dangerous, ugly, and hard to breathe because of the desert dust. It’s highly advisable, especially for women, to stay inside the Green Zone. Many journalists here are satisfied with the daily military briefings, in which we are told only what the military wants us to know.
But I can’t settle for that. I came here to shoot what I hope would be an award winning documentary. I am suffocating behind these walls. I have to know what’s going on out there, in real Baghdad! All I need is transportation.
“Fine,” surrendered the captain in charge of transport. I’ve been besieging him since day one and, finally exhausted, he gave up.
“Keys. Your jeep is over there,” he pointed at a bunch of cars in the nearby lot. “The green one.”
“Thank you, Captain,” I said, feeling the happiest I’ve been since arriving to this inhospitable place.
“Don’t mention it,” he responded grouchily. “But I must advise you that you are venturing out there at your own risk. I suggest you at least wait for the convoy. It’s leaving in an hour. Two Humvees and a truck. Better travel with them – safety in numbers.”
“Can’t do that, Captain,” I said brightly. “Another day perhaps. Today, the plan is to shoot some footage of real life: streets, people, marketplace… It won’t work with soldiers around. But I appreciate your advice all the same.”
“All right,” he said, giving up. “But at least, dress in man’s clothes. It’s safer. This world is not very favorable to women, especially pretty Western women,” he added, attempting a smile and failing miserably.
It seemed like a sound advice, so I quickly borrowed a pair of cargo pants, safari shirt and a khaki cap from Alejandro. I found a silk scarf and tied it around the pants, because Alejandro’s belt didn’t have enough holes in it. The scarf did a satisfactory job of holding up the cargoes and added some bulk to my form. After rolling up the pants so they wouldn’t drag on the ground, I checked my new look in the mirror and satisfied, got into the jeep.
We found a good vantage point, a busy intersection, next to a marketplace. Deciding to do some general footage first, we started setting up the camera on the corner. I had a good feeling about this particular spot, hoping we might be able to get some good angles here. The camera started rolling.
“Pan right, Alejandro. Now, a tad to the left. Try to catch that family with those cute little kids,” I directed my cameraman periodically.
“Very good,” I went on, and was going to add that now I needed him to focus on the marketplace, when we heard the rumbling noise.
“It must be the convoy the captain was talking about,” I murmured. Sure enough, moving towards us was the leading Humvee, followed by a huge armored truck, with at least fifteen or sixteen soldiers on board, two of them manning machine guns trained on both sides of the street, and followed by another Humvee. The truck was now almost parallel with us, a mere twenty feet away.
“Get this!” I mouthed to Alejandro through the deafening noise. But he was already focusing his camera on the convoy. I lucked out with Alejandro as my cameraman. He was experienced and I really didn’t need to remind him of such things.
As the truck passed us, the broad-shouldered sergeant in its cabin nodded to me and I saw a smile in his blue eyes. I waived back at him. At that very moment, I heard a noise coming from the quiet alley behind. Both Alejandro and I turned to see what was going on.
Like a bullet, an old Corolla shot out of the hidden alley, and went straight for the truck. Some kind of a package was tied to the car’s front, where during weddings they usually tied wedding dolls. Alejandro, a consummate cameraman, immediately trained his camera on the charging Corolla. I only had the time to think, but it’s so tiny compared to that giant truck… when I got that urgent gut feeling, which I usually referred to as “my well-honed intuition.”
“Run!” I yelled, and quickly dragged Alejandro into the alley. We barely had time to duck behind a protruding rock, when the soldier with machine gun on top of the truck started firing. But it was too late; Corolla rammed into the truck at full speed, smack where the blue-eyed sergeant sat. A huge explosion rocked the intersection.
The noise was deafening, fire raged, panicked and bleeding people ran in all directions. Alejandro and I were about to dash to the site of the explosion, hoping we could help. But at that moment, a new explosion rocked the street and we had to duck again.
It was hopeless. No one over there could’ve survived these two explosions, plus the fiery inferno. We stood, watching the flames, wiping sweat, dust and soot off our faces, hoping against hope that someone had survived, and not knowing what to do next.
And that’s when someone tugged on my sleeve. I looked down, surprised. A small Iraqi boy stood next to me.
“Did you just tug on my sleeve?” I asked.
In response, he silently handed me an envelope. I took the envelope and my jaw dropped as I read: Why I became a terrorist. Inside I found several pages, written in a small, tight handwriting in what appeared to be decent English. I looked up to ask the boy where he got this letter, but he was already gone. I couldn’t believe what I was holding in my hand. It was the story of the suicide bomber, whose deadly act I just witnessed firsthand! …..

The story I always wanted to tell
In 2006 I was flying from Asia back to the US through Dubai, where I met an American journalist returning back to Iraq. He turned out to have done his journalism studies at Bard College in Red Hook, NY, one of my favorite schools, where my daughter was a young scholar at the age of 16-18 and which I visited frequently. We exchanged some stories from our travels and as we said goodbye, the idea of Jade Snow, a spunky, smart and incredibly blessed, yet strangely cursed international journalist, turned stay-at-home mom, turned accidental spy extraordinaire, flushed in front of my eyes.
The GREEN DESERT, 1st Accidental Spy Iraq adventure novelette was born, which, as I wrote it, took an unexpected turn of the butterfly effect!
The Green Desert prequel led to next manifestation of Jade Snow in the 1st Accidental Spy full-size novel, now as married yet lonely, what with absentee world-traveling husband, stay-at-home mom-to-be, who lands in a perfect-façade backwater paradise, STEPFORD, USA, to reveal the truth, solve a cold case and bring closure and justice to the victim and wrongfully imprisoned man.
The next adventure, GOLD TRAIN, was my inspiration. I created a story I personally enjoyed very much, in which an epic treasure hunt for the lost gold of the Russian Empire and a dangerous global conspiracy against Russia blended with something forbidden and passionate, a star-crossed relationship between Jade and FSB operative Alexei. Frankly, that was never planned, but once I began writing, my characters demanded me to go in that direction.
Generally, the characters in this series behaved very willfully, not always performing the way I planned. The author is sometimes at the mercy of character development logic, even if they break the mold and decide to stray off on their own adventure!
I wanted to create an off-beat, free-spirited, willful protagonist, who has a huge heart, being brave, fiercely loyal, truthful and caring to a fault, yet with a rebellious and inquisitive streak that often gets her in trouble but also delivers miraculous results… And a red-head, with eyes like the ocean on a breezy summer day, Jade Snow appeared, fitting the bill perfectly.
I also wanted to create a hero who would be worthy of Jade’s affections, and Alexei Moguchev, aka Prince Obolensky, appeared. In truth, Alexei exceeded my expectations and became more than I hoped for.
Now that my books are getting a new life through re-publishing with a different publisher whom I love, I begin to work anew on the next adventure, DRAGON GATE, where Jade and Alexei experience an unexpected, yet destined reunion. The beginning chapters of this adventure were first written in 2012, following GOLD TRAIN, and I am preparing this unfinished manuscript (first 8 or so chapters) to be included in the new ACCIDENTAL SPY 3.3 OMNIBUS EDITION!
I have another idea formed back in 2012, and now it may get a new life. The promising beginning was written a long time ago, and the working title of this book is RUSSIAN ROULETTE. I am very excited about these new Jade and Alexei adventures and I can see where they are both going… Also, more air time will be given in the future books to Jason (Stepford USA), Rachel (Stepford, USA and Gold Train) and Comrade General (Gold Train). Little Lara and the amazing cat, Princess Lily, will also show up.
The new stories are already written in my head, I just need to put them on paper! There are explosive twists and turns my characters and I have planned, and more passionate and otherworldly romance too, the kind of a relationship most can only dream of! There will be more gorgeous places and jaw-dropping conspiracies throughout! Maybe even a bit more of a treasure hunt…
**A warning! The steamy intimate parts are definitely R-rated, but I can tell you that: 1. I personally think they are awesome and very logical for the characters created. 2. The original intimate scenes have been toned down, but not sterilized, in 2nd edition of Gold Train and the future Dragon Gate. 3. The original, uncut, full romantic and intimate scenes from Gold Train and Dragon Gate will be published as a separate compilation, sold exclusively in the BOOKS bookstore.

GOLD TRAIN CONFESSION ~ by Lada Ray
Just yesterday, reread the whole Gold Train (Accidental Spy Russia Adventure #2), for the first time since its final publication in 2012 – and had an unexpected blast. I was engrossed in the adventure and all the story’s twists and turns. I know it sounds strange, but it happens to authors; we go back to our works years later and marvel:
DID I REALLY WRITE ALL THAT?… HOW ON EARTH DID I MANAGE?!
I rediscovered how much I enjoy my two characters, Jade and Alexei, and how much I appreciate their otherworldly, yet forbidden, relationship! They are so 5D, so out of this world… yet firmly with their feet on the ground! They are amazingly blessed and strangely cursed at the same time; they are locked into this reality, yet free and united beyond this world.
Gold Train was a bestseller in 2012 on Amazon, yet misunderstood by many truly ‘accidental’ readers when it first came out, who expected a typical ‘America first’ adventure, complete with American mentality and slang! Was it some puritanical ‘writing’ police, Dark State interference, or simply low-calibrated people, who judge everything in the darkest colors and are Russophobic to boot, who wrote those unfair negative reviews?… I don’t know, and what’s great, at this point I don’t care!
Leaving Amazon was the best thing that happened to me – I feel a lot freer and a lot more myself! I feel free to love and create what I LIKE – AWAY FROM THE LOW-CALIBRATED, judgy EYES OF THE WRONG CROWD!
Rereading Gold Train was a healing journey. After all these years I am looking with the new eyes at all the books I loved writing, and on my whole writing process. I understood anew that finding the RIGHT readers is paramount!
I know I am far ahead of my time; I’ve been told that many times before – the curse of all visionaries! I think the time is now catching up!
Gold Train (Accidental Spy Russia Adventure #2) has received a facelift!
I wrote an entirely new, very exciting book description, updated the manuscript and the stats. The steamy Jade-Alexei love scenes have been toned-down in this edition. I’ll be sharing all that with you soon!
