My INFATUATE Copies Have Arrived!

My Latest Must-Read: VAMPIRES IN THE LEMON GROVE By Karen Russell
I always love hitting the Pen-Faulkner Reading Series here in DC but I’m in TOTAL fangirl mode after last night’s fab event featuring the amazing Karen Russell (SWAMPLANDIA!) and the brilliant Chad Harbach (THE ART OF FIELDING). So inspiring to hear them talk about all the blood, sweat and tears behind their fabulous works. (Harbach wrote and rewrote and rewrote to make FIELDING so fantastic–love that!) Russell (who, in addition to being one of the most exciting and original writers around also happens to be a fellow Northwestern alum–go ‘Cats!) read from her new story collection VAMPIRES IN THE LEMON GROVE and let me tell you, it’s some truly stunning writing. I can’t wait to devour the rest of this book!

Greetings from the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School Writers Fest!
Hello, Petersburg, Virginia! I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at the Annual Writers Fest at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts this weekend and, let me tell you, there are some amazing young writers out there.
First I joined the lovely Meg Medina in a chat about the writing and editing process, from that first spark of an idea to the final published tome. (My special guest star? My sis, Karen, who slogs through all my early drafts, came along for the ride!) Then Meg and I teamed up with author Anne Westrick for an exciting panel where we critiqued the first pages of work submitted by students. It was very American Idol and I admit that I was the Paula Abdul of our group: I liked everything. But I just couldn’t help it, these kids happen to be insanely talented. I expect to see the shelves crowded with their work in future years!
Thanks to the fabulous teachers and students of ARGS for such a lovely weekend!

Meg and I will be chatting about the editing process and I’m so happy to be teaming up again after sharing the stage with her at a James River Writers panel this summer. If you haven’t read her beautiful novel THE GIRL WHO COULD SILENCE THE WIND yet, pick it up…and come hang out Saturday!
