Satelite TV versus Free TV

I wonder how many of you out there are paid TV or satellite TV subscribers? I'm not a couch potato. I'm more to a workaholic who would prefer to sit in front of the PC working on my novels and whatnot instead of watching TV.

Apart from that, I'm also a little bit of a control freak. I like to be in control. The idiot box does not give me much control over things because I cannot control what's being aired and I also cannot control those annoying advertisements.

Yes, I don't fancy watching TV, especially the free TV whose funded by the local government. There's simply too much ads, too much propaganda by the local government during election season, infested with re-runs of the old shows or movies and too much censorship on romantic dramas.

The free TV have terrible quality control, I must say, and it's quite a nightmare for me to sit in front of the TV and tune into those free channels. They're liable to give me hypertension.

I may not like watching TV and can definitely do without tuning in for a couple of months consecutively, but then again, every now and then, I do like the idea of sitting back on the old couch and indulge myself in a movie session or two over a bowl of buttered popcorns.

The only way for me to enjoy watching the idiot box is to subscribe to paid TV. Paid TV or  satellite TV is completely a different species from the free TV. It's free from the local government's propaganda campaigns, proper rating system for adults and children alike, minimal advertisements and most importantly, free of repeated old movies/shows re-runs.

Paid TV, to me, is a pure bliss. It's something I can really call a home entertainment. It's something I can enjoy without feeling annoyed.

Unfortunately, unlike my American counterparts, the customer service of paid TV in my country is terrible. I've heard of horror stories from paid TV users in my country, and frankly speaking, their testimonials does not exactly tempt me to subscribe their service.

My American counterpart is so lucky to have DISH Network. DISH Network is not only offering over 200 Satellite HD TV Channels packages, but they're also customer oriented too. They aim to please and satisfaction is guaranteed. If you're a Twitterer, you can follow them at Infinity DISH Twitter for current promotions and latest status updates.

Not a Twitterer but a Facebooker? Well then, fret not. They are on Facebook too. If you're interested in subscribing to any of their services and want to know more about them, you can also 'LIKE' their DISH TV Facebook fanpage.

You can never go wrong when you communicate with your service provider via all these social networking sites. The response is much more visual and satisfying than calling up the hotline. It's not only cost and time effective, but as you also get to see their latest promotion as soon as they're ready to market it too.

Best part of all? You not only get satisfactory response from your service provider, but you can also make friends with other subscribers and exchange your views on movies and whatnot. Beat that. It's like killing two birds with one stone.

Stinking poop, through and through…

Okay, what the heck am I raving now? Well, I don't know. Honestly, I don't. I just feel like putting that goddamn title and be done with it. Cuz I feel like saying it. Why do I feel like I'm saying it? Well, beats me, I have no idea. I'm just being a silly woman, ruled by her hormone again.

Don't feel so shocked with my statement. If you've known me for quite some time now, you'd probably know that this is not exactly newsflash. I'm a certified lunatic in my own rights.

Tomorrow, Sunday is mother's day. I'm sure most of you ladies are aware of that. I daresay most of you'll be  celebrating with your mother, wife, daughter, sister…any female who is a mother.

Then again maybe there's some of you who are like me, such occasion can be likened to no occasion at all simply because it made no difference to you as nobody is greeting you or nobody is giving you any presents to commemorate the day because they think mother's day is everyday and the official mother's day is way too commercialized.

I used to be upset when my husband gave me nothing or never bothered to greet me on special occasions such as mother's day, birthdays or even anniversaries. But I guess, after 8 going on 9 years, I think I'm kinda immune. The brain is somewhat re-programmed by now. No greetings? No tokens of love or appreciation? No problem. Just adopt a wonderful solution to all my bloody misery, greet myself, get myself pressie, thank myself for all the things I've done and give myself a pat on the back for still being alive. Nods. Does this sound sensible to you? Maybe not. But it's quite a diplomatic solution to me. Better than sulking or feeling miserable, don't you think?

Lemme see…mother's day is just another day to me this year and I daresay will not change til the day I crawl to my grave, but I am determined to commemorate it this year. And how will I do that? Here's how:

Bought myself a spa voucher that will enable me to enjoy some relaxing massage and a jacuzzi session for 2. No. I'm not bringing my husband with me because it's only for ladies. I've hinted that I wanted it on Facebook earlier on. But since he probably missed it, I bought it myself. I'm very smart, aren't I? Better to depend on myself than others. When I want something, I get it myself. That's the way to go! :D But I'm not going to bring my mother with me too cuz she's not in town, unfortunately. Couldn't bring my paternal grandma with me either cuz she's already dead. No to maternal grandma as well, cuz she's on the other side of the world. Definitely not my MIL cuz we don't along well. I'm dragging my 'big sister' with me to accompany me to the 'ME' session. It's going to be so cool, don't you think? Just me and big sister.
Ordered a proof copy of my latest work in progress- Time Tempest. Yeah… can't help it. The heroes in my novels are all yummylicious and appreciative. Maybe when the proof arrived I could sleep with the book and dream about the characters I've created. (Okay, forget I actually wrote that, I'm abit loose on the head)
Bought myself a heart-shaped locket. You know, the kind that you can open up and put tiny pictures in it? Well, I've been eyeing on it for quite some time now. It's nothing expensive and it's rather childish, but I happen to like it and since nobody bought it for me, I bought it myself. But I'm not gonna put any pictures inside. I'm gonna leave it empty. :D
Ditch the man and the brat and go for a haircut whenever I'm free next week. The hair is getting unruly.
And last but not least, I'll be doing myself a huge favour and make appointment with the gyne. For what, you ask me? Infertility treatment? Hell no. Gonna get myself some goddamn advice on some highly effective form of contraceptives so that there will be more brats on the way to get on my nerves and cut my life short. You see, I've decided that I had enough, and it makes more sense for me to wait for my brat to have a kid of his own instead of getting another one for myself to dote on. It won't be long. Just 10-15 more years. Wonderful, isn't it? Less one thing to worry about every goddamn month. Truthfully, I'd be awfully tempted for a second child if the first one is not such a nightmare. But since he is a nightmare, I don't think I want to risk another nightmare. Besides, I don't think I can afford it and I'm convinced that I'm not cut out to be a good mother. Why bother, anyway?

I guess this is it, huh? This post is also to commemorate mother's day. So…Happy mother's day to me, and to all ladies who are mothers. In the words of Daffy Duck, "That… that… that's all folks," .

The end. Until the next episode of: Cleffairy and her lunatic raving.

Cleffairy: I have come to learn that with zero expectation, there will also be no disappointment. And now… all I have to do is work on being emotionless. My life, and everyone's life would definitely be better if I am emotionless. Hmmm… let's see if I can do that.

Obama, President of the United States died? o.O

Wah! The newsreader killed the President of America. She said Obama was killed. *FAINT* Of all the things. Tsk tsk tsk…I wonder how the producer of the news lets her off with such mistake.

Oh well…tongue twisted or not…the newsreader managed to assassinate the President of the United States with merely words. LOL.

Hotel Angeline: A Novel in 36 Voices

Hotel Angeline is a very special novel. Why do I say so? Well, it's special because it's ONE story and was written by 36 authors live on stage. Yes you heard me right. The novel was written live, in front of audience. The result? Messy? Plot-less?

No… it's nothing new messy or plot-less. In fact, the result was a brilliant, wacky, exhilarating and polished novel. The outcome of it was so wonderful that I wished that I was a part of it somehow, someway. You see, as an aspiring author, I've participated in various crazy writing events like NaNoWriMo and Script Frenzy. Those are events that will require you to churn out words for one month so that you can have a novel/script to hold by the end of the month. But what I've been doing is nothing in comparison to these 36 authors. What they did was outrageously crazy and challenging. Imagine writing about 150,000 words with your other fellow writers live on stage for just a week. That's just… insane!

Any authors in the right mind would back out from this challenge… cuz if you're going to churn out words like that… it's definitely not going to be your best work. But these crazy people proved to us all that it's possible and the outcome is even better than a well thought, well-planned novel that possibly took years to be completed and published.

Anyway, just so you know, Hotel Angeline  is brought to the readers by Seattle7Writers, which created "The Novel: Live!" event.  It's one of a diverse range of not-for-profit, author-focused organizations receiving support from Amazon.com for programs dedicated to developing new works and new voices. Watch the video on how the idea of it comes to life.

Fifty percent of the proceeds from Hotel Angeline go directly back to the writing and reading community. Seattle7Writers will use these proceeds to award grants to worthy nonprofit organizations making a difference through literacy programs and support of the local arts.

Below is my review for Hotel Angeline:

Title: Hotel Angeline

SubTitle: A Novel in 36 Voices

Publisher: Open Road

Pub Date: 3 May 2011

ISBN:9781453212318

When I requested this book for review in Netgalley, I am not quite sure what to expect, considering that it's one story written by 36 authors live. Yes… it's just one story…not a collection of story. I was rather skeptic a with the end result even before I began reading.

I wondered if it will even have coherence, but much to my surprised, it's not only decipherable, but the story is amazingly well written and I'm pleased to say it's one of the best novel I've ever read. It's highly entertaining, inspiring and not to mention, unpredictable in a good way. I was really hooked on the story and i find it hard to put down. This book, is a gem, a treasure and definitely a keeper.

If you're a reader who is bored of the conventional novel with predictable plot, you might want to try reading Hotel Angeline. I daresay that you won't be disappointed and will crave for more. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars for not only the effort done by authors, but also for the sheer brilliance of it.

Book description:

Thirty-six of the most interesting writers in the Pacific Northwest came together for a week-long marathon of writing live on stage. The result? Hotel Angeline, a truly inventive novel that surprises at every turn of the page.

Something is amiss at the Hotel Angeline, a rickety former mortuary perched atop Capitol Hill in rain-soaked Seattle. Fourteen-year-old Alexis Austin is fixing the plumbing, the tea, and all the problems of the world, it seems, in her landlady mother's absence.

The quirky tenants—a hilarious mix of misfits and rabble-rousers from days gone by—rely on Alexis all the more when they discover a plot to sell the Hotel. Can Alexis save their home? Find her real father? Deal with her surrogate dad's dicey past? Find true love? Perhaps only their feisty pet crow, Habib, truly knows.

Provoking interesting questions about the creative process, this novel is by turns funny, scary, witty, suspenseful, beautiful, thrilling, and unexpected.

Hotel Angeline is a masterpiece of:

A Reluctant Queen: The Love Story of Esther

Title: A Reluctant Queen

SubTitle: The Love Story of Esther

Publisher:Thomas Nelson

Pub Date:14 June 2011

ISBN: 9781595548764

Author:Joan Wolf

It's difficult to read a book when you already know the story in it and it gets much more worst when you have high expectation from the book in question. That is what happened when I read this book, A Reluctant Queen: The Love Story of Esther by Joan Wolf.

The story of this book is based on the Biblical Queen Esther of Persia. This novel is very well written. Highly descriptive, inspiring and heartwarming, but since it's based on a biblical story- The Book of Esther in the Old Testament, I can't help but notice that certain things had been change to beautify the novel. For example, in most Bible translation, Mordecai is more recognized as Esther's cousin who fostered her when her parents died, not her uncle. And there's no mentioning Esther's real name, Hadassah before she went to Ahasuerus harem and became the Queen of Persia. This book is pretty romanticized, I must say.

Perhaps if I ought to take this book as a fiction instead of a memoir or a biography of Esther, I would have been more satisfied. But then again, I'll give credit where it's due. It is difficult to write a story based on what people already know. This book is inspiring nevertheless and I enjoyed it very much. The author did a good job in bringing the Persian court and culture to life, and for that, I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Book description:

An inspired re-imagining of the tale of Esther, a young Jewish woman thrust from a life of obscurity into a life of power, wealth, intrigue . . . and tender love.

See the story of Esther in an entirely new way-with all the political intrigue and tension you remember, but told as a passionate and tender love story between a young man and woman. Misunderstood by many, King Xerxes was a powerful but lonely man. Esther's beauty caught the eye of the young king, but it was her spirit that captured his heart.

Imagine anew the story of Esther, one of our faith's great heroines, destined to play a key role in the history of Christianity.

I received an ARC of this book from Thomas Nelson Publisher via Netgalley. I was not required to write any positive review for the book. For Booksneeze reviewers, this book will be available for review in May 2011. Do KIV for it if you're interested.

Artemis Fowl

Title: Artemis Fowl

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

Pub Date:1 May 2001

ISBN: 9781423132172

Author: Eoin Colfer

In conjunction of Artemis Fowl 10 years anniversary, Disney-Hyperion sent me a complimentary copy of Artemis Fowl book. To be honest, I haven't even read Artemis Fowl before and I discovered that so far, there's 7 books in the series, and the story is amazing. The author has confirmed that the series will end in the next book, and the eighth book is scheduled to be released in 2012.

Artemis Fowl is an amazing Young Adult series and I wondered why I did not think about picking up this book before. It's wicked, highly entertaining is much more satisfying than reading the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

If you haven't read about Artemis Fowl, it's time you do so. I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I received a digital copy of this book from Disney-Hyperion via Netgalley and I was not obligated to give a positive review for this. For more information on Artemis Fowl and future release, click here.

Book description:

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius-and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories; these fairies are armed and dangerous. Artemis thinks he has them right where he wants them…but then they stop playing by the rules

Justice= Freedom + Peace?

May 1, 2011  the world's most recent public enemy, Osama Bin Laden was pronounced dead by the US government.

Alot of people rejoice…the announcement is everywhere. On Facebook, Twitter, blogs, various media… people are rejoicing for the ultimate revenge against terrorism. They rejoiced because they think that justice has been served.

But then again, how can people actually think that justice has been served? Are you honestly that shallow?

His death does not change the fact that the world still lives in terror and is still plagued with many humanitarian issues. Yes. Osama and the Talibans are terrorist, but path that US took was evil too, for while they called for peace, they have done it with weapons in hand. How can you call that peace and justice? How can you rejoice at one man's death when the fact is that his death changed nothing?

How can you say that with his death, justice is being served and the world would be a better place and a more peaceful place to live? His death does not bring back peace. His death does not bring the innocents back to life, and with his death, the world still have to live in terror of counter-attack by his followers? How can you say with his death, there's justice, there's closure, and there's freedom and peace when the truth is there is none?

How can peace be justified by holding weapons and shooting at each other? How can one takes the life of others for vengeance and then someones gets revenge by taking his life. How is that kind of twisted thinking going to bring us peace, I wonder, for the cycle will go on and one and will never stop.

If you should kill someone's husband in battle, then his wife will despise you for that. And if you were to kill someone's son, then his mother will hate you for that as well. Is this not the truth of it all?

The chain…it would be unbreakable. It's the chain of murder, or destruction, not of peace or justice or even freedom.

What actually happens in a war is that everyone has some kind of reason, but in truth, no one actually does. Ponder that.

You may say whatever you want regarding Osama's death. But to me, his death doesn't change the fact that the ones who had succumb in war is not exactly terrorists themselves, but the civilians.

Will the world be a more peaceful place with his death? No. His death changed nothing.

Osama Bin Laden was not the number 1 public enemy. We are our own public enemy for we allowed ourselves to hold weapons and shoot at each other each time we failed to come to an agreement. We are our own public enemy because we allowed such monstrosity to spread.

Cleffairy: Allow me to share a quote with you, "I will mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." ~Martin Luther King Jr

It does not change the fact that the world still lives in terror and is still plagued with many humanitarian issues. The path that US took was evil too, for while they called for peace, they have done it with weapons in hand. How can you call that peace and justice?

Venom known as 'can't'

My students always say " I can't" whenever I asked them to be creative in their writing and I had to tell them over and over that one of the biggest influences on your success as a writer comes from your own mouth.

That's right, the words you say have a huge influence over your success. And I suppose, this applies to almost everything in life, and not just restricted to writing.

I always think that when you say something, you are actually declaring it to the world. To me, it becomes real the moment you say it out loud. And when you say negative things all the time, you'll start to believe that they are real and you are restricting, oppressing and confining yourself from windows of possibility.

Someone very wise told me as a child that venomous words such as "can't," "should" and "impossible" are words you need to get rid of from your vocabulary if you ever plan on being a successful in whatever you do.

When you say you "can't" do something, you automatically set a limit on yourself. You set a limit on what you're capable of and how far you'll go in life. "Can't" is a possibility killer.

If you want to succeed as writer or achieving whatever goal you have in mind, get rid of the "can't". Here's how:

Start saying "can"–I know it sounds simple, but changing your language pattern really is as easy as flipping the negative into a positive. So say, "I can do it" and "I can be a an achiever" and "I can reach my dreams."
Pay very close attention to the words you're using. As you start to pay attention, you'll notice how often you're using poisonous words like "can't". Once you know how often you're saying it, then you can begin to change the choice of your words.

Reprogramming your self-talk isn't a quick process, but it's a worthwhile one as it will give you more confidence and create the 'can do' attitude.

I Almost Divorced My Husband, But I Went On Strike Instead

Disclaimer: I want to do alot of things, but I don't have much time to accommodate everything. The article below is open for interpretation, and it's a result of my attempt at writing a multi purpose article. The article below is written because:

I'm participating in a writing challenge in my writing circle that begins with: Write a a coherent article that contains:Queen of the  Nile, Duracell Bunny, battery, Genie, pollution, Disney's movie, Medieval slave.
I need to write a book review that I've been procrastinating from writing.
My desire to write up a Labour's Day dedication to all overworked ladies who are wife and mother, but don't quite have the time to do it, so yes, this is a Labour's Day dedication.

I don't know about you ladies out there, but for me, married life is not exactly a bed of roses. If a friend ask me what married life is like, I'd scornfully say it's like working without the benefit of medical leave or any other advantages that's applicable to other employees all around the world.'Vacations' or a 'medical leave' is extremely hard to obtained for us wives. Well, at least to me, it is difficult.

Being married sometimes would also mean that you can be subjected to verbal and emotional harassment from your in laws, and yet, you don't quite the rights whatsoever to drag your in laws to court because more often than not, such action shall undermine your marriage because your other half gets all emotional over it and consequently, the marriage will turn sour.

Ask me how it is like to be a mother… I'd say: Quite like a Medieval slave in a feudal Lord's household, cuz there's endless chores to be done, tonnes of responsibility being placed on the shoulder, absolutely no escape, no bloody rest even you're halfway dead and not to mention you shall also be the subject of society's scrutiny if you failed to educate your children to be up to par with their peers.

Ask me what's the advantage of being married… perhaps I'd say free, legal sex, though not necessarily safe all the time. That is an advantage, of course, if you have a libido like a hormonal teenager and your other half is actually good in bed and bent on pleasing you first before pleasing and satiating his own carnal needs.

If you don't quite fancy sex or the man is the kind who likes to please himself without taking your needs into consideration, then such legal advantage is of course, not an advantage and it's just another chore and responsibility in your already long list.

Of course, I'm not saying that marriage and motherhood will be the same with everyone. Some women managed to land themselves some precious catch where their husband spoil them like the Queen of The Nile. They are the Queen of the world and need not lift a finger to even eat.

I only feel that way because at times, I feel that I am not appreciated and being taken for granted. I feel that way because people expect me to do everything and refuse to pick after themselves and see me like some sort of automatic machine that will do everything for them whenever, whatever they want to be done.

They also think that I am not entitle for some good rest. Perhaps, they are under the illusion that I am a Genie. Whatever they want, they'll just wish it and I shall make it appear. Want a drink? No problem, just state the wish to me and I'll make it appear. Want something to eat, no problem too, I'll make it appear in a jiffy. Want money? Want massage? Sure, no problem. I can make it appear too and they do not even need to say the magic word 'please' or 'thank you'.

Geez, sometimes, I think I'm a Genie. I do wonder if I look blue… like that Genie in Disney's movie Aladdin. I must be a higher class Genie… cuz apparently, the wishes people can ask of me is not just limited to 3, and they need not thank me for it because they probably thinks Genies like me won't get mad and leave them cuz I'm under some binding contract that will not allow me to leave.

But of course… higher class Genie like me need not to live in an old lamp. I guess I'm luckier than any other Genie cuz I actually live in a house. Thank God for small mercies. I hate to think that I'd be confined in a lamp throughout my tenor as a Genie. I'm terribly claustrophobic.

Sometimes, I tend to think I look like some noise pollution technician too, cuz every time there's noise in the house, I'd be expected to fix it and make the noise go away.

You see, I got extremely sick and tired of that; to be seen like some sort of furniture that blends in the house perfectly. I wanted to be treated like human again, so whenever I feel that it is too much, I'd just go on strike and stop doing whatever I am expected to do. No cooking, no cleaning, no babysitting, no whatsoever.

Enough is enough, and one enough as for what it's worth, even an employee have their rights and access to annual leave or medical leave. All they need to do is just apply it and they will get it. I should be entitled to some sort of relief too. I ought to be given the rights to say 'NO' when things does not sit well with me or when I am exhausted or when I'm ill.And I definitely have to be given rights to have a 'ME' time without being disturbed.

After so many years, I have come to realize that I'm not a toy bunny that's running on Duracell battery that can go on and on without stopping. I'm just a bunny that's running on a re-chargeable battery, and when the battery is depleted, I need to be recharged so that I can work efficiently again, and to be appreciated, I need to make people see the importance of the role that I'm playing in the house.

I suppose, some ladies out there are feeling the same; things are too much to handle at times but just dare not voice it out or rant it out for the fear of being judged. It's all right. I am sure you would know when enough is enough and put a stop to it and set things straight again and make people see you as a human once more instead of just a wish granting Genie or the inexhaustible Duracel Bunny.

Perhaps, you're overworked and under-appreciated too, but do not know how to stop being overworked and be appreciated once again. Perhaps, some of you are tempted for a divorce. But trust me, sometimes, divorce is not the solution and will not make such problems go away. In fact, sometimes, divorce will only make things worst and brings up more issue.

All you need to do is just say no whenever things get too much for you and make people see your worth. Don't know how to do that? Perhaps, this book can help.

I Almost Divorced My Husband But I Went On Strike Instead by Sherri Mills. In my opinion, this is a must have book for every wife and mother who overworked and under-appreciated. It teaches you how to turn that monster of a kid and that snot of a husband back into an angel they used to be in the most effective and subtle way. I received a digital ARC of this book from the publisher Cedar Fort via Netgalley and I must say, this is definitely a self-help treasure. A 5 star book. If you're an overworked and under-appreciated wife and mum, do yourself a favour and get a copy of this book.
