EotV 2021

Hello droogs!

Those of you who have preordered EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE (thank youuuu, black-hearted blood-lusties) may have received notification of a shift in publication date for EotV in the last couple of weeks. I’m here to inform you that, yes indeed, the release date for EMPIRE has been pushed to September 2021.

This is a year later than I originally trumpeted, and I’m aware a lot of you were really excited to read EotV in 2020 (again, thanks for the preorders!). So, before you scream GODDAMN YOU KRISTOFF and start booking in time to get your tattoos removed, let me explain.

The reason for my decision is twofold.

Firstly, 2019 was the single most amazing year of my career to date. Buuuuut it was also the most exhausting, and in some ways, the most frustrating.

Those of you who’ve been paying attention may have noticed I published three books in 2019 (AURORA RISING, DEV1AT3 and DARKDAWN). I spent more than three months away from home last year, solo touring and working my shapely(?) buttocks off. And verily, I got to meet amazing readers and go to awesome countries and have brill experiences, but it was still three months I spent away from home and (mostly) away from my wife.

On top of tour/travel, there was also an incredible amount of time spent on book promo. 2019 was the first time I felt I had to caaaaarve out time to do my actual job – fucking writing – from all the time I spent doing all the other jobs that come with being a fucking writer.

The root of all these first world problems is simple to identify, of course: Three books is a LOT to bring out in a single year. And the solution to these problems is also simple:

Publish less books, dickhead.

I already have two books coming out in 2020 – AURORA BURNING and TRUEL1F3. I’m already touring for BURNING (details soon), as well as attending WorldCon in NZ. And I’ll definitely be touring on EMPIRE when it drops. So doing the math and looking at the 2020 calendar, I realized I was looking at another year of months away from home, and another year of struggling carve out time to actually, you know, fucking write. And I refuse to fall into a mode where the whole reason I got into this game – and the thing I love most about it – is the thing I’m struggling to find time to do.

So.

Publish less books, dickhead.

My second reason is rather more simple, being that the book isn’t perfect yet. Not that any book will ever be perfect, especially in the OMGTHISISSHITANDIAMSHIT mind of your average author. But EotV is a new series, and a lot of people are excited about it and my publishers are expecting big things from it after everything DARKDAWN did (thaaaank you droogs) and basically I don’t want to fuck it up.

So, late last year, I was presented with the choice to either spend this year running around like a fucking lunatic and not spending enough time at home and handing in a book that was not yet, in so far as any book is, perfect, orrrrrrr

Publish less books, dickhead.

Three books a year was fun. 2019 was a fun year. But, much like drinking an entire bottle of scotch and banging it out with half a dozen nubiles of your preferred gender, it’s not the kind of fun you want to have all the time or it’s going to fucking kill you.

So, EotV 2021 it is.

I know this will be a disappointment for some of you. I know you’re really looking forward to the book, and waiting sucks. But I want this thing to fucking shine, and the last thing in the world I want to do is burn so hard I just burn out. You Kristoff kultists already have two books to tide you over in 2020, and when it arrives, there’s going to be plenty of EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE to atone for the year you had to wait. It’s the biggest book I’ve written, size, complexity, scope, you name it.

Seriously, this book is going to be fucking huge. You will actually be able to beat a man to death with it.

It’ll be worth the wait, I promise.

Cheers droogies. And thanks for understanding. Love you all

Tour FAQ

Hello droogs! Along with Sydney and Melbourne, London, Manchester, Glasgow and Prague stops for the DARKDAWN tour are sold out (and I suspect Rome and Milan would be too, but we’re not taking bookings – more about that below). Which is awesome! But, that means I’m going to be seeing a lot of people over the next month, so it’s time for a FAQ.

How many books can I bring to your tour stop?
As many as you like! However, in the interest of keeping the line moving, each time you visit the front of the line, you’ll be limited to 3 books (2 signed, plus 1 signed and personalised).

Wait, does that mean we can line up multiple times on the night?
Yes. You can line up as many times as you like. This way, if you’re a hardcore disciple with an entire back catalogue for me to sign (thank you!) you can get them all signed, but you won’t be holding up the person behind you who only brought 1 copy (thank you, too!)
Sorry about this, but some lines on the OBSIDIO tour lasted for five hours, and that’s just too long to make people line up for. Trust me, meeting me IRL isn’t that fucking impressive.

How does the signing line work?
Depends on the venue/store. Some lines are ticketed/numbered, sometimes it’s chaos on the scale of The Purge – please follow directions on the night.
However, I do have one rule: if you have mobility issues, a small child present with you (seldom a good idea), or more than a 2+ hour journey home, you can come to the front of the line.
I don’t want anyone falling asleep at the wheel on the way home, I need you fuckers to pay for my lavish rock and roll lifestyle and dead readers don’t buy books.

Do we need to buy books at these tour events, or can we bring our own copies from home?
You can always bring my backlist to events, and I’m always happy to sign them and very grateful for the support you give to my ongoing cocaine addiction.
It’s nice to support the bookstore hosting me by purchasing a copy on the night, but I understand some of you have pre-ordered already (thank you!) so feel free to bring those along too.
When in doubt about details on individual events, it’s always best to contact the bookstore.

What if we can’t make these events but we want a signed book?
You can contact one of the bookstores I’m touring at to order a signed and ask for a personalised copy.

Will you please sign my [insert name of body part here]?
Alas, no. I’m an author, not a member of Mötley Crüe.

DARKDAWN PRE-ORDER OFFER

Welcome to the pre-order offer for DARKDAWN, droogs! Hope you’re excited! Enough! For! Multiple! Exclamation! Points!

Please read the directions and FAQ below carefully. It should answer all your questions. As always, if you ask me a question I’ve already answered, you owe me a goddamn pony.

So, to be eligible, here’s what you need to do:

Pre-order DARKDAWN from anywhere. Yes, anywhere.Email your proof of purchase to the following address: DarkdawnPreorder@gmail.com. Please use the subject header “DARKDAWN pre-order offer”Profit!

FAQ

Right, so what do we get for our pre-order, Kristoff?
You get a deleted chapter from DARKDAWN called “Three”.

Why should we care? What’s this deleted chapter about?
Revealing much about it gets into spoiler territory quickly. But the chapter features a much-requested moment between three central DARKDAWN characters that, for story reasons, never made it to the final book.

*heavy breathing* . . . Do their names start with M, A and T?!?
Spoilers, sweetie.

But wait . . . it’s called “Three”?
Yeah. Do you see what I did there.

Jay, this scene sounds suspiciously like it might be smut.
That’s not a question.

OMFGGGGASFASDFASDASFDASFDASFASDFASDASDASDF
Use your words.

When does the offer close?
September 1, 2019.

When will we receive our goodies?
The day of DARKDAWN publication. September 3, 2019. THREE will be sent to the email address you entered the offer with.

So it’s a PDF, not a physical booklet?
It’s a PDF. So I imagine it’ll be up for download on pirate sites within about 30 seconds. Yay internet.

Omg, please tell me this offer is open internationally, you black-hearted sonofabitch?
Yes. It’s 100% open internationally.

Is this the same deleted scene that the various book subscription boxes are offering?
Yes. So even if you can’t afford/don’t want a subscription box, or the box you’ve ordered isn’t offering THREE, you can still get it by following the instructions above. See how much I love and appreciate you?

And we can really pre-order DD from anywhere and be eligible?
Yes. Just email your scanned receipt to the address above.

Book Depository? Amazon?
Yes.

That dodgy guy who sells books off the back of a Buick downtown? The little bookstore on the corner of my quaint European village? The undead bookomancer who haunts the crossroads at midnight and trafficks exclusively in human souls?
Fuck, that’s so metal. And yes.

Will I receive some kind of confirmation email?
No, you’ll have to trust the internet gods. It’ll be fine.

If I preordered aaaaages ago because you are my moon, my sun, my starlit sky, should I cancel and re-order?
Nope. Unless you didn’t keep your proof of purchase and need a new one, that is. And thanks for pre-ordering early!

When you say ‘proof of purchase’ . . . is a screenshot okay?
Indeed. It’s not like we’re demanding sworn affidavits or anything. So if you wanna get really creative in photoshop and doctor yourself one, A+ for effort, I guess?

And all pre-ordered US editions are still going to be signed?
Yes. All pre-orders of the US edition of DD will be signed. I just finished signing 20,000 fucking tip-in sheets.

FAQ

Your Melbourne launches are usually packed, do we need to book?
Nope, bookings aren’t required for the Melbourne launch, just show up to the chaos. The line is traditionally pretty big, though, so don’t be late.

AURORA RISING doesn’t launch in the US until May 7th, but YallWest is on the 3rd. Does this mean LA misses out?
No! As an American exclusive, the booksellers at YallWest will be offering AURORA RISING four whole days before the official US launch. So YallWesters will actually get their hands on the book earlier than the rest of the country.
Lucky bitches.

Do we need to buy books at these tour events, or can we bring our own copies from home?
You can always bring our backlist to events, and we’re always happy to sign them and very grateful for the support
It’s nice to support the bookstore hosting me by purchasing a copy of AURORA RISING on the night, but we understand some of you have pre-ordered already (thank you!) so feel free to bring those along too.

What if we can’t make these events but we want a signed book?
You can contact one of the bookstores I’m touring at to order a signed and personalized copy.

How many books can we bring to these events?
As many as you like. All will be signed, but to avoid you folks having to line up for an eternity, only one will be personalized.
Sorry about that, but some lines on the OBSIDIO tour lasted for five hours, and that’s just too long to make people line up for. Trust me, meeting me isn’t that fucking impressive.

Will you please sign my [insert name of body part here]?
