Pre-Publication Review of Egypt’s Prehistoric Fauna; An AUC Press Nature Foldout

COVER Prehistoric

Egypt’s Prehistoric Fauna; An AUC Press Nature Foldout is due to be published and available soon. The devastating setbacks in Egypt has forced the frequent closure of the printer in Cairo, and AUC Press – with their offices in the heart of Tahrir Square – has been challenged to keep business going as usual.

We recently shared the pdf files with an Egyptian-American paleontologist friend and she was kind enough to write us her impressions:

I absolutely love the AUC [Nature Foldout] on Egypt’s natural history! It’s beautiful, very well written, and well organized. I am impressed. I’m also amazed with how much information you were able to fit into a two page document without making it too crowded! This was a fantastic idea! Dad loves it too! Please let us know as soon as it is published and how we can buy copies, because we will want MANY to distribute to all of our friends and relatives! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Can’t wait for it to be published!

AUC Press Nature Foldouts at The Bowers Museum Gift Store

IMG_20130810_153912

Today, upon a visit to the Bowers Museum in Orange County to attend an ARCE lecture, I was overjoyed to see the Nature Foldouts on display in the lovely Egypt section of the Museum Gift Store! They were nestled right next to the Egyptian history book originally published in 1964 by Barbara Mertz, who passed away just two days ago at the age of 85…

American Research Center in Egypt Lecture at Bowers Museum

Dr. Brett McClain of the Chicago House Epigraphic Survey gave an ARCE lecture today on the work being done at the Temples of Ramesses III in Karnak: http://www.arce.org/chapters/orangecounty/events/u685

I had the pleasure of reintroducing myself to Dr. McClain (we were once introduced at Habu Temple briefly during my spring 2012 trip) and I gave him a set of the Nature Foldouts, which he informed me are on the shelf at the Chicago House Library in Luxor!

Great lecture, fantastic work, and yet another wonderful member of the Chicago House!

Review of Egypt’s Flora & Fauna Nature Foldout… from Arkansas

Emily—from Piggott, Arkansas, and winner of the Goodreads Book Giveaway Contest—posted her review of the Nature Foldout:

I just received this book in the mail. On first glance, I love the little foldout book. It is beautiful. The pages seem sturdy, and I think it would great be for families. Lots of ideas are popping into my head on how to use this in classroom.

Thanks so much Emily!

My photograph posted on flickr of a Lesser Mouse-tailed Bat (Rhinopoma hardwickii) which I encountered at Dendera Temple has been included in the AfriBats group on iNaturalist.org where people can record detailed observations of wildlife in the world. Here’s the link to the observation I made: http://www.inaturalist.org/observations/358158

Egypt’s New Minister of State for Environmental Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly Article

Laila Iskandar, Egypt’s new minister of state for environmental affairs, is a veteran of social and environmental work in Egypt and abroad.

Iskandar played a major role in organising recycling in Sinai and Mansheyet Nasser and cooperated with the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs on a project that aimed to relocate garbage recycling plants outside Cairo.

Iskandar, who resigned from her local posts before starting her ministerial work, spent 15 years helping organise, train and improve conditions for the zabbaleen (garbage collectors) of Muqattam.

Agricultural refuse, rice hay and the notorious black cloud are high on Iskandar’s agenda, as is the possibility of using coal as fuel in cement factories and the production of bio-fuel from organic refuse. Rice hay, she notes, can be used to produce alternative energy and to generate bio-fuel.

Iskandar is also determined to act against infringements on natural protectorates, including the Wadi Al-Rayyan area.
