Now available: Desperate Times: The Summer of 1981, a collection of all six issues of the Seattle zine cofounded by Maire M. Masco.
Desperate Times is best known for having run a letter from a young Mark Arm describing his then-imaginary band Mr. Epp and the Calculations as “Pure grunge! Pure noise! Pure shit!” Despite this early usage of grunge, Arm—who would go on to front Green River and Mudhoney—denies coining the term. More on that here.
