McCarthy says Americans shouldn’t protest if Trump is indicted

ORLANDO, Fla. — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy urged calm on Sunday and said Americans should not protest if former President Donald Trump is charged and arrested in a secret New York investigation. , contradicting Trump, who called on his supporters on Saturday to “Protest, take our nation back!

“I don’t think people should protest this, no. And I think President Trump, if you talk to him, he doesn’t believe it either,” McCarthy, R-California, said in response to a question from NBC News during the House Republicans retreat in Orlando.

He later said, “Nobody should hurt themselves.

But during the same press conference, McCarthy defended Trump thoroughly, dismissing New York County Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation as politically motivated and saying he was not interested in cracking down on rising crime. At New York.

“Lawyer after lawyer will tell you this is the weakest case, trying to make a misdemeanor a felony,” said McCarthy, flanked by members of his executive team in an outdoor courtyard at the JW Marriott. Orlando, Grande Lakes.

“The last thing we want…is for anyone to put their thumb on the scale [of justice] just because they don’t agree with somebody else’s political point of view,” McCarthy added. “That’s what’s wrong, and that’s what pisses people off. And that won’t hold up in court if that’s what he wants to do.

Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday that Bragg’s “illegal leaks” to the media suggest he, “the by far leading contender” for president, will be arrested on Tuesday, and he called on his supporters to protest.

Bragg has been investigating allegations that Trump made a silent payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during his winning 2016 presidential campaign. Multiple sources said last week that New York law enforcement is were preparing for a possible indictment of Trump as early as this week.

I was asked to be available for the New York grand jury “as a rebuttal witness”

Michael Cohen, a former personal attorney for Donald Trump, told MSNBC’s “Alex Witt Reports” on Sunday that prosecutors with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office have convened a grand jury in a criminal investigation into a silent payment. in 2016 to porn star Stormy Daniels. asked him to come on Monday “as a rebuttal witness.”

Cohen said: “This morning I got a whole series of phone calls from reporters asking if I’ll be back in the DA’s office tomorrow as a rebuttal witness for whoever they’re bringing there- down tomorrow. Whether it’s before the grand jury or just to meet them for an interview, I’m not sure, but yes, I was asked to make myself available and be at the DA’s office tomorrow as a rebuttal witness.

Witt asked, “Rebuttal to whom or for what? Has this been clarified? »

Cohen said, “No, I don’t know who the person is. Of course, once they find out who the person is, I’ll know what the problem is. I was personally involved. Again, I don’t know. It’s a bit premature for me to answer a question on a topic where I don’t know who the person is and whether or not that person is going to, truth be told.

The body of a teenager found dead near the Murdaugh estate in 2015 will be exhumed

The family of a teenager who was found dead eight years ago on a road near the hunting estate of disgraced South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh says they’re going to exhume his body for an independent autopsy.

Stephen Smith’s death was initially ruled an unsolved hit-and-run, but his mother has rejected that suggestion and says she hopes the new autopsy will help answer questions about what really happened to her son.

“Our family is so very grateful to all of you who came together to help us in our fight for justice for Stephen,” Sandy Smith wrote on a GoFundMe page that had raised more than $60,000 to pay for the exhumation.

“Thank you for not allowing Stephen’s story to be swept under a rug,” she added. “This is Stephen’s year.”

Earlier this month, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of the 2021 shooting deaths of his wife and son, Maggie and Paul, and sentenced to two consecutive life terms in state prison. Murdaugh admitted to lying to police during the investigation but maintains he did not kill the pair.

During the investigation into the killings of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh two years ago, the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division announced that it was also opening its own inquiry into Smith’s death, the Augusta Chronicle reported.

A spokesperson said at the time that the agency would look into Smith’s death “based upon information gathered during the course of the double murder investigation of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh.”

Smith’s family has long dismissed the idea that he was killed in a hit-and-run, suggesting that his injuries weren’t consistent with a hit-and-run and that there was no debris along the rural road where his body was found, about 15 miles from the Murdaugh estate.

Sandy Smith has said her son, who was openly gay, was killed after his car ran out of gas.

Both Smith and Murdaugh’s oldest son, Buster, graduated from the same Hampton County high school in 2014, NBC reported.

Though he’s been convicted of the two murders, Murdaugh still faces a slew of other criminal charges related to alleged financial crimes, some of which the former lawyer admitted to on the stand during his trial.

Top-seeded Alabama advances to Sweet 16 with dominant win over Maryland

Brandon Miller warmed up, as did Alabama, which avoided the fate of two other NCAA Tournament seeds and edged Maryland 73-51 behind a dominant second half on Saturday night.

The Crimson Tide (31-5) hit their second Sweet 16 in the last three tournaments and ninth overall. Alabama will face fifth-seeded San Diego State in the Southern Region semifinals in Louisville, Ky., on Friday.

Even before the game tipped off two seeds, Purdue and defending national champion Kansas had fallen, and No. 1 seed Houston had edged rival Tide Auburn by 10 points at halftime. -time earlier at Legacy Arena before retiring.

Alabama and Miller got off to a slow start, but the All-America rookie and the NBA’s top prospect finished with 19 points after going scoreless in the first round. Miller is nursing a groin injury and missed his first nine shots of the tournament.

Jahvon Quinerly scored 22 points on the one-year anniversary of his left knee injury early in a second-round loss to Notre Dame, which further limited him earlier this season. Quinerly made 4 of 6 3-pointers.

Charles Bediako had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Alabama starters hit the bench with minutes left to sing “Sweet 16” into the friendly crowd.

Julian Reese had 14 points for Maryland (22-13) before committing a foul. Jahmir Young scored 12.

Alabama, the overall top seed, faced little drama, unlike other No. 1s.

FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON’S EXPLICIT ABBREVIATION PUT THE INTERNET INTO FRENZY AFTER MARS MADNESS.

16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson toppled Purdue 63-58 on Friday in the second such upset. Then No. 8 Arkansas beat the Jayhawks 72-71 earlier on Saturday. Houston ultimately walked away from Auburn as the Tide awaited their opportunity.

The first half was more to Maryland’s liking, aside from the 28-23 deficit, as one team allowed just 63 points per game.

BIG PICTURE

Maryland: 2002 national champion Terps failed to make his 15th trip to the Sweet 16 in coach Kevin Willard’s first season. They also lost to Alabama in the second round two years ago under former coach Mark Turgeon. Maryland’s defense was sharp enough to hold the lead for much of the first half despite going on a nine-game losing streak.

Sydney man charged with drugs, filming his sexual assaults on Korean women

[Source]

A man described as a “prominent member” of Sydney’s Indian community is currently on trial for 13 counts of rape, among multiple other sex crimes, in Australia.

Balesh Dhankhar, former president of the Indian diaspora organization OFBJP Australia, stands accused of rape by five women, all Korean and in their mid-twenties. The women claimed they were lured to Dhankhar on the pretext of offering them jobs before he drugged and raped them in his apartment between January 2018 and October 2018.

Dhankhar reportedly posted a job advertisement for a Korean-to-English translation job on the classifieds site Gumtree to attract women to the bar at the Sydney Hilton hotel, located near his apartment.

After allegedly spiked their drinks with sleeping pills or Rohypnol, a benzodiazepine associated with date rape due to its solubility, he would take them to his apartment and rape them. He allegedly used his cell phone or an alarm clock with a hidden camera to film himself raping his victims.

According to court documents, a korean woman who met Dhankhar for a fake job interview in October 2018 said Dhankhar had expressed interest in her but she told him she was not interested.

She shared that after consuming the wine he gave her in his apartment, she felt dizzy and went to the bathroom to message her friend where she was.

“Sister, I feel very drunk but a slightly different type of intoxication,” the victim wrote in his text. “And I myself am worried. Keep trying to kiss me…I’m screwed.

Another victim recounted how Dhankhar gave her ice cream and a glass of wine in her apartment in September 2018. All she remembered was seeing a condom wrapper, feeling dizzy and to have felt pain. Two days later, she went to the hospital and reported the incident to the police.

The story continues

According to prosecutors, the woman appeared in two videos where she was unresponsive and making “distress sounds” while Dhankhar had sex with her.

During a police raid on his home in October 2018, investigators reportedly found a hard drive containing 47 videos that show Dhankhar having sex with Korean women.

No more NextShark: the search continues

Most of the clips show women unconscious, while others show women who appear to have consented to the act but were unaware they were being filmed.

The jury would have asked leave the courtroom at trial this week after the scenes featured in the videos proved too much for them to handle.

DNA evidence was also recovered from Dhankhar’s bedding along with a spreadsheet with names of women on his phone and notes that appear to refer to sexual activity.

Dhankhar pleaded not guilty to 13 counts of rape, 17 intimate recordings without consent, six counts of using intoxicants to commit an indictable offense and assault with an act of indecency.

For the past four years, he has tried to have his name removed from press articles, but to no avail.

Dhankhar was a “senior data visualization consultant” for Sydney Trains at the time he allegedly committed the crimes. While on bail, he was hired by ABC and Pfizer.

Kentucky Republican calls out GOP for anti-LGBTQ bills no one wants

Right now, it’s unclear whether the University of L’s men’s basketball team or Kentucky’s LGBTQ community had the worst year. At least the Sad Cards have won four games, LGBTQ folks are still winless this season.

What season?” It would be the one in Frankfurt where the Kentucky General Assembly meets and considers a tsunami of bills that attack, attack, attack people – including helpless children – who happen to be gay or transgender, designations that concern no one.

I lobby for the Fairness Campaign, the advocacy group trying to contain the carnage. It’s like trying to turn back the sea. Every week, our team organizes triage meetings to decide which anti-gay measure is worse than another in order to schedule appearances to offer testimony in opposition.

I wish I could blame both political parties for this cataclysm, but I can’t. Every anti-gay/trans bill this session has been introduced by a Republican. But there is hope. GOP state Reps. Kim Banta, Stephanie Dietz, Kim Moser, Killian Timoney, and Sen. Stephen Meredith voted this session against turning LGBTQ Kentuckians into second-class citizens.

Transgender children are prime targets of the vendetta: what pronouns can be used to describe them in our public schools (I’m not making this up), what medical care they can get, what psychological services they can get, what bathrooms children may use in a public school among other impairments.

Gay adults have been singled out for particular humiliation by having to face a bill that addresses one of the Commonwealth’s most critical issues: who can attend drag shows and where they can be performed; an artistic expression (dance) that threatens absolutely no one.

Aren’t there more pressing issues? :Tennessee Republicans Target America’s Biggest Threat: Drag Shows

Who exactly wants these punitive laws?

Other than the ironically named Family Foundation, not a single school principal, medical professional, parent, person from a Kiwanis chapter, Rotary, FOP lodge, VFW post, Knights of Columbus, Ducks Unlimited or the Ancient Order of Hibernians testified at any committee meeting to advocate for anti-gay/trans bills. PERSON. Dozens of people, representing professional and religious organizations or simply themselves, testify against these pernicious measures, but the bills always roll out of the committee like a field of horses springing from the starting grid.

It’s a contradictory view for pro-life Republican lawmakers who believe that all human life, born or unborn, is sacred. One cannot simultaneously defend innocent life and belittle the lives of our equally innocent gay sisters and brothers as nothing more than names printed on a birth certificate. As one of the co-founders of the Republican Party, Abraham Lincoln, said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

The anti-gay blitzkrieg in Frankfurt has metastasized due, in large part, to the deafening silence of GOP leaders. Kentucky American senses Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul have failed to speak out against this anti-gay/transgender child abuse in the most explicit and unambiguous terms, remarks that would provide sage advice to Republican lawmakers who admire them.

Senator McConnell didn’t hesitate for a second when, in a long-winded speech, he condemned Donald Trump’s treacherous attempt to overthrow the 2020 election. The longest-serving leader of the US Senate in American history should, well , lead, when human rights are so gravely threatened in our State Capitol.

Senator Rand Paul stands for “freedom” and “freedom” and keeps the heavy hand of government out of our lives. Does he truly believe in maximizing individual freedom or is he “a clanging gong and a clattering cymbal” who tacitly condones a blatant exception based on sexual orientation?

Bob Heleringer, a Republican, served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1980 to 2002.

Where are Senate Speaker Robert Stivers and House Speaker David Osborne? I know the two gentlemen well; I served in the legislature with Robert and knew David from our association with horse racing. They are intelligent, honest and principled leaders, as evidenced by the fact that they have been elected and re-elected by their peers to the important positions they hold. No one will ever convince me that either man supports this murderous campaign of intimidation against a small minority of Kentuckians, not because of “who” the victims are, but because of “what” they are. . How will history judge them when these heinous bills, if they become law, are finally repealed as troublesome anachronisms by a future Republican legislature?

For this former history student, it always comes down to “what would Abraham Lincoln do?” In 1864 the president wrote in a letter to an editor in Frankfurt that “if slavery is not bad, nothing is bad”. While codified discrimination against gay/transgender children is not wrong, there is nothing wrong. Whether a legislator is writing a local, state, or federal law, they should always ask themselves, “Would I want this law to apply to my own family?” Will he treat anyone affected “with malice to none, with charity to all?”

Bob Heleringer, a Republican, served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1980 to 2002. He can be reached at helringr@bellsouth.net.

A strong earthquake has killed at least 13 in Ecuador and 1 in Peru

QUITO, Ecuador — A strong earthquake shook southern Ecuador and northern Peru on Saturday, killing at least 14 people, trapping others under rubble, and sending rescue teams out into streets littered with debris and fallen power lines.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported an earthquake with a magnitude of about 6.8 that was centered just off the Pacific Coast, about 50 miles south of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city. One of the victims died in Peru, while 13 others died in Ecuador, where authorities also reported that at least 126 people were injured.

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso told reporters the earthquake had “without a doubt … generated alarm in the population.” Lasso’s office in a statement said 11 of the victims died in the coastal state of El Oro and two in the highlands state of Azuay.

In Peru, the earthquake was felt from its northern border with Ecuador to the central Pacific coast. Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otárola said a 4-year-old girl died from head trauma she suffered in the collapse of her home in the Tumbes region, on the border with Ecuador.

One of the victims in Azuay was a passenger in a vehicle crushed by rubble from a house in the Andean community of Cuenca, according to the Risk Management Secretariat, Ecuador’s emergency response agency.

In El Oro, the agency also reported that several people were trapped under rubble. In the community of Machala, a two-story home collapsed before people could evacuate, a pier gave way and a building’s walls cracked, trapping an unknown number of people.

The agency said firefighters worked to rescue people while the National Police assessed damage, their work made more difficult by downed lines that interrupted telephone and electricity service.

Machala resident Fabricio Cruz said he was in his third-floor apartment when he felt a strong tremor and saw his television hit the ground. He immediately headed out.

“I heard how my neighbors were shouting and there was a lot of noise,” said Cruz, a 34-year-old photographer. He added that when he looked around, he noticed the collapsed roofs of nearby houses.

Ecuador’s government also reported damages to health care centers and schools. Lasso said he would travel on Saturday to El Oro.

In Guayaquil, about 170 miles southwest of the capital, Quito, authorities reported cracks in buildings and homes, as well as some collapsed walls. Authorities ordered the closure of three vehicular tunnels in Guayaquil, which anchors a metro area of over 3 million people.

Videos shared on social media show people gathered on the streets of Guayaquil and nearby communities. People reported objects falling inside their homes.

One video posted online showed three anchors of a show dart from their studio desk as the set shook. They initially tried to shake it off as a minor quake but soon fled off camera. One anchor indicated the show would go on a commercial break, while another repeated, “My God, my God.”

Luis Tomalá was fishing with others when the earthquake struck. He said their boat began moving “like a racehorse, we got scared, and when we turned on the radio, we heard about the earthquake.” That’s when his group, Tomalá said, decided to stay at sea fearing a tsunami could develop.

A report from Ecuador’s Adverse Events Monitoring Directorate ruled out a tsunami threat.

Peruvian authorities said the old walls of an Army barracks collapsed in Tumbes.

Ecuador is particularly prone to earthquakes. In 2016, a quake centered farther north on the Pacific Coast in a more sparsely populated area of the country killed more than 600 people.

Machala student Katherine Cruz said her home shook so badly that she could not even get up to leave her room and flee to the street.

“It was horrible. I had never felt anything like this in my life,” she said.

Parliament-Funkadelic singer Clarence ‘Fuzzy’ Haskins dies at 81

Enlarge this image

Clarence Eugene “Fuzzy” Haskins, an original member of the influential musical collective Parliament-Funkadelic, has died. He was 81. Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Clarence Eugene “Fuzzy” Haskins, an original member of the influential musical collective Parliament-Funkadelic, has died. He was 81.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Haskins along with other core Parliament-Funkadelic members in 1997, confirmed the death to NPR in a statement.

Born in Elkins, W.V., in 1941, Haskins started out singing in the 1950s and ’60s in New Jersey in the doo-wop vocal quintet The Parliaments.

Named after the American cigarette brand and led by charismatic musician and producer George Clinton, the group didn’t achieve great success until they scored a hit in 1967 with “I Wanna Testify.”

After their small Detroit record label dissolved, Clinton teamed The Parliaments up with a group called Funkadelic. Eventually known as Parliament-Funkadelic or P-Funk, the musical collective made a big impact on the 1970s R&B and funk scenes.

According to his biography on Clinton’s website, “He was known, during live P-Funk shows, to don skin-tight bodysuits and gyrate against the microphone pole as he whipped the crowd into a frenzy, especially when they performed ‘Standing on the Verge of Getting It On.’ “

“Parliament-Funkadelic pushed boundaries further and further on classic albums like Mothership Connection and Maggot Brain, and set a futuristic pace for Black music,” said Rock & Roll Hall of Fame spokesperson Dawn Wayt. “But Clarence ‘Fuzzy’ Haskins kept things connected to their street corner harmony roots.”

Starting in the mid-1970s Haskins developed a solo career, but continued to perform and record with various P-Funk members on and off over the years.

P-Funk member Bootsy Collins paid tribute to Haskins in an email to NPR. Collins said:

“Fuzzy was not only a talented singer & musician, he was a leader & team player. He was always a light at the party, the shows or wherever he would go.
He commanded attention on stage & off.

Not in a boastful way, but just being his natural Werewolf self. He could have played the Wolfman. That was an inside joke that got out there in the atmosphere.

Fuzzy was so much fun to hang out with. But on stage is where he gave his full attention to entertaining the audience.

He was dedicated to his family & friends but anybody that knew Fuzzy knows that he would give u the shirt off his back. He will be missed dearly. R.I.P. my friend.”
