Old Is M. Night Shyamalan’s Weirdest Movie, And It Demands A Revisit On Streaming

“Old” has all the idiosyncrasies audiences have come to associate with M. Night Shyamalan the artist, from the deliberately-heightened dialogue that never quite sounds natural to the stylized visual compositions that don’t always work yet never fail to grab your attention. There’s also the somewhat gleefully sadistic edge that’s found its way into Shyamalan’s films since “After Earth,” with characters often dying in over-the-top gruesome ways that seem designed to get viewers hooting and hollering just as much as — if not more than — crying out in horror. Even Shyamalan joins in on the fun with his trademark cameo, casting himself as a character who all but winks at the camera as he leads the film’s protagonists to their doom.

Of course, there’s stuff that flat-out doesn’t work in “Old,” like the film’s insensitive and inaccurate portrayal of mental illness (a recurring problem in Shyamalan’s work), or a big reveal during the third act that only seems to exist because, well, people expect Shyamalan’s films to include twist endings. Then there are the quasi-conservative, almost puritanical overtones that tend to keep finding their way into Shyamalan’s movies, although interpretations vary greatly on that subject (see also: the debates about what his most recent horror-thriller, “Knock at the Cabin,” is even going for thematically).

Despite all that, the visuals in “Old” are as warped as its plot and will embed themselves in your brain long after watching the film. Moreover, the film’s story itself is all about the dramatically different ways people confront their mortality, so in a sense it almost feels appropriate that Shyamalan, much like his characters as they scramble to escape the beach that makes you old, doesn’t always appear to have a firm grip on the steering wheel.

Indiana Jones’ Crew Kept Antivenom Serum Handy On Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Actor John Rhys-Davies revealed that he was always unhappy working around snakes, having been afraid of them his whole life. Marshall, too, revealed that he had to work through some of his own fears in order to get the cute li’l cobras to the set. “I found that I was able to clear up a lot of my phobias working on these movies,” Marshall said. He never liked snakes. It seems, though, the reptile expert he hired for the shoot knew that the snakes were actually not poisonous. That gave the crew more ease in hucking the animals around the set and arranging them for a shot. Of course, even with thousands of animals, they didn’t cover the ground the way Spielberg wanted. One can imagine the director pounding his fist and yelling “I need more snakes!”

In set footage from 1979, one can hear Spielberg asking for about 7,000 additional snakes to the 2,000 he already had. Marshall revealed that the philosophy on set was essentially “Whatever you say, Steven.” Marshall rallied, got several more snake experts on the set, and the floor was eventually covered. Now provided with the snakes he needed, Spielberg admitted that their mass slithering made him a little nauseated. The snakes weren’t poisonous, but they would still bite. The film’s first assistant director David Tomblin got bitten. It didn’t let go. Don’t worry. Both Tomblin and the snake were okay.

But then the cobras arrived. Those ones were poisonous. Marshall recalled the shifted attitude on set, saying:

“The day that the cobras arrived, everything changed. Everybody was very serious about the cobras being there. We had antivenom serum, we had a lot of protection for the handlers. And even the actors were very respectful of these snakes. Because they were deadly.”

Ewan McGregor Feted at Karlovy Vary (Love)Fest: “I’m So Fortunate to Do What I Love and Love What I Do”

Ewan McGregor not only received a lifetime achievement award, but also much love and adoration during a brief, but emotional ceremony at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night.

During the event at the big cinema celebration in the Czech spa town, organizers and fans feted the Scottish actor, director and producer as the President’s Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon him. On Friday’s opening night of the fest, Alicia Vikander received the same award, while Russell Crowe was honored with the festival’s Crystal Globe.

Related Stories

A warm welcome to McGregor by a host was followed by a particularly well-received career highlights reel that repeatedly drew laughs and cheers for scenes from the likes of the Star Wars universe, I Love You Phillip Morris and, of course, Trainspotting.

“This is like a dream to see that,” McGregor told the audience at the Hotel Thermal, the location of many Karlovy Vary festival activities, after taking to the stage to extended raucous applause and many cheers to receive the statue. “It was my dream as a little boy to become an actor. And that’s the thing of dreams, seeing that reel.”

McGregor then joked that he was going to do a bit in Czech onstage but decided against it after the reaction to his practicing Czech. “Somebody called for an ambulance because they thought I was having a medical emergency,” he quipped.

Instead, he decided to keep things short and simple, saying: “Thank you so much for being here tonight. And it means just the world to me. I believe so much in what we do as actors. I’m so fortunate to do what I love and love what I do.”

The winner of a Golden Globe, an Emmy, two European Film Awards and numerous other awards then introduced his new film You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, in which he appears alongside his daughter Clara. The honoree described acting with his daughter as a highlight of what he has done.

He then invited Clara to the stage, and she told the audience: “This is a complete dream” and called out director Emma Westenberg. “She is definitely her father’s daughter,” the director shared about the young actress, calling her “incredibly talented.” They were then joined onstage by other members of the creative team, including veteran independent film producer Christine Vachon who the Karlovy Vary Fest is paying homage to this year.

“Thank you, everybody,” McGregor said to wrap up before he and the rest of the creative team left the stage to another round of thunderous applause and cheers.

“Ewan McGregor is one of the most exceptional actors working today,” festival organizers said ahead of the celebration. “His extensive filmography is a unique combination of the tradition of British cinema with the grandeur of Hollywood productions. He began his acting career in the 1990s after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama when he got his first roles in television series. Above all, however, he began to work with director Danny Boyle. His role in the dark comedy Shallow Grave (1994) earned him an Empire Award for best British actor, and their next joint film, Trainspotting (1996), was an international sensation. The second most successful British film of all time, Trainspotting (like its source material, the novel by Irwin Welsh) became a cult hit.”

McGregor and Boyle worked together again on the 1997 romantic comedy A Life Less Ordinary, in which McGregor starred with Cameron Diaz.

Among many others, the Karlovy Vary team also highlighted such films set in the world of music as 1998’s Little Voice, directed by Mark Herman, and Todd Haynes’ glam-rock era drama Velvet Goldmine; war drama Black Hawk Down (2001) by Ridley Scott; Baz Luhrmann’s musical Moulin Rouge! (2001); Woddy Allen’s romantic mystery Cassandra’s Dream (2007); Ron Howard’s adaptation of the Dan Brown bestseller Angels & Demons alongside Tom Hanks (2009); and Roman Polanski’s thriller The Ghost Writer (2010).

In 2016, Ewan McGregor made his directorial debut with a film adaptation of Philip Roth’s American Pastoral, in which he played the main role. In 2017, he teamed up with Boyle again for T2 Trainspotting, which revisited the main protagonists of the cult classic.

Star Wars fans may know McGregor better as Obi-Wan Kenobi, an iconic role he first embodied in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999) and most recently in the eponymous Disney+ series.

McGregor won a Golden Globe in the category of best actor in a miniseries or television film for his work in the third season of the series Fargo (2017). In 2021, he won the Emmy Award for lead actor in a limited series for his role in the Netflix show Halston. McGregor’s European Film Award honors came for Moulin Rouge! and The Ghost Writer.

You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder premiered at South by Southwest. It is a road trip drama, inspired by the father-daughter duo’s real-life stories. Clara also co-wrote the script, with Vera Bulder and Ruby Caster.

McGregor is currently filming the miniseries A Gentleman in Moscow, which he is also producing.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival opened Friday evening with Karim Aïnouz’s period drama Firebrand, starring Vikander as Catherine Parr, the final wife of Jude Law’s Henry VIII, sandwiched between musical performances by British duo Morcheeba and Crowe and band. The 57th edition of the festival runs through July 8, with its jury including Patricia Clarkson.

My healthy 3-month-old died suddenly — these are my biggest regrets

Chloe Evans’ 3-month-old son had just learned how to smile before he died suddenly in December 2021.

“I wouldn’t want another parent to go through what I’ve gone through,” the Welsh mom, 26, told Wales Online on Saturday.

“He was really healthy, and he went to bed, and I just couldn’t get over it the next day.”

She recalled putting her son, Mackenzie-Brian, to bed like she had other nights. Her worst nightmare came true when she found him not breathing the next morning.

Evans said she called an ambulance and performed CPR until medics arrived 10 minutes later, but he tragically passed away.

“The support from the paramedics was brilliant because they did everything they could, but they couldn’t save him because he’d been gone longer than we thought,” she said. “One of the police officers that attended the scene stayed in my oldest son’s bedroom while the paramedics worked on my youngest.”

She buried Mackenzie-Brian a month later, but she had to wait until June 2023 to learn what went wrong.

An investigation revealed nothing specific had caused his death, and it was determined that he died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the unexplained passing of a seemingly health baby, typically in their sleep.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 3,400 infants die each year due to SIDS.

A distraught Evans sought counseling and support, but the care she’s received “hasn’t been the best,” she admitted. In fact, she “had to wait nearly two years to see a counselor face-to-face.”

She had been in touch with a bereavement charity, she claimed, but “the calls stopped.”

“It would be nice to have some sort of counseling, so I can like talk about how I feel,” she said, adding that her grandparents, though, have provided much-needed support.

“We extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Miss Evans and her family during this extremely difficult time,” a spokesperson for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board told Wales Online. “We encourage her to get in touch with us directly, so that we can address her concerns.”

Evans described her son as a “content, beautiful boy.” While he was only alive “for a short time,” he will be in their hearts forever, she said.

Evans’ other son, Harley, 7, also paid tribute to his late sibling: “Goodnight, gorgeous brother.”

A bright ‘Buck Moon’ is coming — here’s how to see it

Stargazers will be over the moon.

This year’s first full supermoon will occur over the Fourth of July weekend — on Sunday, July 2, and Monday, July 3 — a bright and bold backdrop for holiday fireworks.

Also known as the Buck Moon, it will reach peak illumination at 7:39 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

“Traditionally, the full moon in July is called the Buck Moon because a buck’s antlers are in full growth mode at this time,” the almanac says. “This full moon was also known as the Thunder Moon because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month.”

In NYC, the moon will look 99% full when it begins to rise at 8:21 p.m. Sunday, per TimeAndDate.com. The full supermoon will rise at 9:22 p.m. Monday and set at 6:21 a.m. Tuesday.

The almanac recommends looking towards the southeast after sunset to watch the supermoon rise into the sky.

Fox Forecast Center meteorologist Brian Mastro told The Post there is a chance for periods of rain, including thunderstorms, Sunday in NYC.

There is also a chance of “pop-up summertime thunderstorms” on Monday.

This Buck Moon is one of four consecutive full supermoons this year — the others will be viewable on Aug. 1, Aug. 30-31, and Sept. 28-29.

Full moons happen every 29.5 days. They become supermoons when they coincide with perigee, the point in its orbit at which the moon is closest to Earth.

According to NASA, astrologer Richard Nolle coined the term “supermoon” in 1979.

A supermoon appears slightly brighter and larger than a regular full moon.

In fact, the impressive lunar phenomenon could result in a 30% brightness and 14% size increase, according to Space.com.

But the outlet noted that these differences “aren’t noticeable with the unaided eye unless one pays a lot of attention to the moon nightly.”

Georgia detention officer charged after ’emergency inmate grievance’ reveals alleged assaults

A detention officer in Fulton County, Georgia, is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly assaulted inmates at the Fulton County Jail on Sunday and then failed to accurately report what happened, according to officials.

Detention Officer Demarcus Whatley, 25, is charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault, three felony counts of cruelty to inmates, four felony counts of violation of oath by a public officer, one count of false statements and writings, concealment of facts, and fraudulent documents, and one count of reckless conduct. He is behind bars with no bond.

Officials said the Jail Investigation Unit began looking into Whatley after receiving an emergency inmate grievance against him, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.

After analyzing video footage, it was determined that he used excessive force on three inmates during an incident on Sunday and failed to accurately report it.

“Detention officers have the responsibility of treating those in their custody humanely and with respect,” Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat said in a statement.

He continued: “When an officer deviates from this duty, they must be held accountable. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is committed to thoroughly investigating claims of officer misconduct. As sheriff, I remain committed to transparency and taking action swiftly and appropriately should those claims be sustained.”

Whatley, who was hired as a detention officer on March 1, has been terminated by the sheriff’s office.

There have been several incidents of alleged misconduct by Fulton County Jail officers in recent months, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.

In early June, Detention Officer Monique Clark was arrested after bodycam footage allegedly showed him choking a detainee at the Alpharetta Police Department until she passed out after she refused to take a mugshot.

On this day in history, July 1, 1847, the US Post Office issues the first stamps

The United States Postal Service issued its first-ever postage stamps on this day in history, July 1, 1847.

The first postage stamps produced by the United States Postal Service (USPS) were sold in New York City, according to the USPS website.

The two stamps came in two designs, one for each denomination.

The five-cent stamp featured a picture of Benjamin Franklin, while the ten-cent stamp depicted George Washington.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, JUNE 30, 1936, ‘GONE WITH THE WIND’ IS PUBLISHED

Stamps were not sold in book form as they are in modern times, noted the USPS website. In the 19th century, workers at the post office would have to cut stamps individually using a pair of scissors, and the sheets of stamps were not perforated.

They were, however, pre-gummed, said the USPS — making for easier application to envelopes.

While mail services have existed for millennia, it was not until 1837 that the postage stamp was proposed, said the USPS website.

British teacher and inventor Sir Rowland Hill had the then-revolutionary idea of having uniform postage rates for mail sent within the British Isles, and also the ability to pay these rates in advance, said the site.

Three years later, in 1840, consumers in the United Kingdom were able to buy and use postage stamps.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY IN 1775, US POSTAL SYSTEM ESTABLISHED UNDER BEN FRANKLIN

The first stamps, the Penny Black and the Two Penny Blue, were sold for the mailing of half-ounce and full-ounce letters, respectively, said the USPS.

The United States would catch on relatively quickly, although not on a national scale. The City Despatch Post, a private mail carrier based in New York City, started issuing adhesive postage stamps on Feb. 1, 1842, just two years after they arrived in the United Kingdom, noted the USPS website.

The USPS would acquire the City Despatch Post later in 1842, and would use postage stamps for mail sent within New York City, they said.

Three years later, in 1845, postage rates were simplified, said the website. Some postmasters created “Postmasters’ Provisionals” as a way for people to prepay for letters.

NANCY REAGAN, FORMER FIRST LADY, IS HONORED WITH NEW ‘FOREVER STAMP’

Prior to the invention of the postage stamp, a person mailing a letter would need to bring each letter to the post office and pay for it in person, said the USPS.

Rather than a set price, the postage rate was determined by the length of the letter and how far it was being sent, said USPS.

Unlike the pay-in-advance system of modern postage stamps, prior to 1847, a person sending mail could either pay in advance, have the person who received the letter pay upon receipt — or pay some of the postage in advance and have the recipient pay the remainder upon delivery.

In lieu of a stamp, the postmaster would write “PAID” in the upper right corner of an envelope that was pre-paid, said the USPS.

It was not until 1855 that it became mandatory to pre-pay for postage, and the use of U.S. postage stamps did not become obligatory until Jan. 1, 1856.

USPS ADDS ‘VIRGIN AND CHILD’ PAINTING TO NEW FOREVER STAMP BEFORE CHRISTMAS

Since the postage stamp’s beginnings in the mid-1800s, the material, delivery, and sale of the item has evolved over the years.

In 1893, the USPS issued the first U.S. commemorative stamps, which featured designs commemorating Christopher Columbus’ voyages to the New World, said the USPS website. These commemorative stamps were almost double the size of a normal stamp, and the concept proved to be quite popular.

The U.S. Postal Service regularly issues “commemorative stamps” such as this set, highlighting views of the Sun from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory on June 18, 2021. (U.S. Postal Service)

Since then, the USPS has issued thousands of commemorative stamps, honoring everything from sports to eclipses to historical events.

The Elvis Presley stamp, which was printed in 1993, remains the bestselling of these commemorative stamps, said the USPS website.

In 1900, stamps began to be sold in book form; the first self-adhesive stamp was sold in 1974, the site noted.

In 2007, the USPS issued the “forever” stamp, “a nondenominated, nonexpiring stamp intended for customers mailing a piece of First-Class Mail.”

These stamps are “forever” good to mail a letter, regardless of the price of postage, they said.

Gwyneth Paltrow sunbathes topless with husband Brad Falchuk while vacationing in Italy

Gwyneth Paltrow went topless as she soaked up the sun while vacationing in Italy with husband Brad Falchuk.

The 50-year-old actress shared a slideshow of photos to Instagram Friday, including an image of herself relaxing on a blue lounger next to the 52-year-old producer.

The Academy Award winner covered her chest with her arm and beamed at the camera as she snapped the selfie.

The Marvel star also shared other snaps from her summer getaway, including an image of an Italian villa and a view of a pool set against a backdrop of rolling hills. She posted several photos of food, including a fresh-cooked Italian dinner, a wheel of cheese and a cannoli.

Paltrow also shared a rare photo of her 17-year-old son Moses, which appeared to be taken at a café. Moses was pictured wearing a short-sleeved blue shirt with a black tie as he took a sip from a coffee cup. The California native shares Moses and daughter Apple, 19, with her ex-husband Chris Martin, 46.

The Goop founder captioned her post with red, white and green heart emoji, a reference to the Italian flag.

Ahead of her milestone 50th birthday last year, Paltrow shared her thoughts on aging in an introspective post on her Goop blog. “The Politician” alum included a photo of her in a bikini as she leaped into the air with a wide smile.

“My body, a map of the evidence of all the days, is less timeless,” she wrote. “A collection of marks and irregularities that dog-ear the chapters. Scarred from oven burns, a finger smashed in a window long ago, the birth of a child. Silver hair and fine lines. The sun has left her celestial fingerprints all over me, as if soaked a brush in dark taupe watercolor, flecking it over my skin.

“And while I do what I can to strive for good health and longevity, to stave off weakening muscles and receding bone, I have a mantra I insert into those reckless thoughts that try to derail me: I accept. I accept the marks and the loosening skin, the wrinkles. I accept my body and let go of the need to be perfect, look perfect, defy gravity, defy logic, defy humanity. I accept my humanity.”

Last month, Paltrow sparked concern among some fans after posting a photo of her catching rays while wearing a tank top with her friend Kimberly Blackwell. A few of the actress’ followers noted what they said was sun damage on her skin and urged her to apply sunscreen.

“Sunblock Gwynnie!” wrote one fan.

Another added, “Holy s— gurl!!! Get out of the sun !!! I can se [sic] only sun damage on that photo!!”

“I agree – but not with all that su[n] girl- even with sunscreen!!!!!” commented another follower.

Paltrow faced online backlash in 2021 after she shared a video of her skin care routine to Vogue’s YouTube channel.

In the clip, she explained that she prefers to use mineral sunscreen with 30 SPF.

“I am not a head-to-toe slather sunscreen person, but I like to put some on my nose and the area where the sun really hits,” she said. She was then seen applying a very small amount of sunscreen only on the bridge of her nose and cheekbones.

The “Shakespeare in Love” star’s sunscreen application was met with criticism by some fans and dermatologists. In a statement to Shape magazine at the time, Paltrow’s company, Goop, said her video was “edited down for timing’s sake and does not show the full application” of her sunscreen.

“[Paltrow also] addresses the importance of sun protection and mineral sunscreen, which deflects rays off of your skin rather than absorbing them, as chemical sunscreens do,” Goop added. “We’re huge proponents of SPF at Goop and always advise that people should consult their dermatologists to find out what is right for them.”
