News Bits: Reading aloud, the power of reading, inspiring students, helping neighbors

Lately the world seems to suck more each day. Here are a few nice things I’ve found from last week.

Crossing Divides: Why I read aloud to strangers -Janine and her husband read aloud to each other but here’s a group of people who read to each other but who are strangers. Well at first, they’re strangers but most appear to build relationships as they read to each other and then discuss the stories.

According to The Reader – a charity coordinating shared reading across the UK and beyond – rea...

REVIEW: Mixed Marriage The Diary of a Portuguese Bride by Elizabeth Cadell

This is the diary of an English girl who falls in love with an eligible young Portuguese, Afonso. The bride recounts, vividly and hilariously, her and her Mother’s plans for an English country wedding, how they dealt with Uncle George (The Head Of The Family), and their success in making sure that on her wedding day the church was filled with music and flowers (both officially banned due to the “mixed” marriage of a Catholic bridegroom and a Church of England bride).

She subsequently finds...

REVIEW: Strokes of Genius: Federer, Nadal and the Greatest Match Ever Played by L. Jon Wertheim

In the 2008 Wimbledon men’s final, Centre Court was a stage set worthy of Shakespearean drama. Five-time champion Roger Federer was on track to take his rightful place as the most dominant player in the history of the game. He just needed to cling to his trajectory. So in the last few moments of daylight, Centre Court witnessed a coronation. Only it wasn’t a crowning for the Swiss heir apparent but for a swashbuckling Spaniard. Twenty-two-year-old Rafael Nadal prevailed, in five sets, in wha...

REVIEW: Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye

Dear Ms. Faye:

I saw this in the Daily Deals back in November of last year, and I clicked “buy” in spite of some reservations. I was concerned by a description of the book as “Jane Eyre meets Dexter.” I recently read a suspense book that featured murdering protagonists that also touted the “Dexter” comparison. I was reminded (since I didn’t care for that book) that I have chosen not to watch the Dexter television show or read the Dexter books in large part because I find the premise of an et...
