REVIEW: Death Magic by Eileen Wilks

Dear Ms. Wilks:

I loved the first and second book in this series but as the worldbuilding evolved and became bigger, I felt like I lost an understanding of the world. The book started out as a Pack book for me (Pack = werewolf) and has been transmogrified into world where every kind of magic exists from dragons to sorcerers to shapeshifters. There is earth magic, fire magic, water magic, precogs, and with each new book, a new element is introduced. The first book in the series, Tempting...

Review: Kobo Vox

A few weeks ago Kobo launched their $199 Android tablet for readers, the Vox.  The launch has gotten off to a shaky start with shipping delays and folks experiencing some glitches with charging and waking it from sleep mode.  Despite that Kobo has put out a nice device that many readers are sure to enjoy.

A quick note: Kobo issued a firmware update which installs as a part of the initial setup routine to fix the power issues, but occasionally it apparently doesn't apply properly.  Some folks h...

REVIEW: Bride of the Rat God by Barbara Hambly

Dear Ms. Hambly,

The title of this book is what got my attention. I mean, how could it not? Once I saw it, I knew I had to read it. Who's the Rat God? Who is his bride? What on earth is going on here?

[image error]If not for her actress sister-in-law Chrysandra Flamande taking her in, WWI widowed Norah Blackstone would still be an underpaid, overworked servant to a nasty, older woman in gray Manchester, England. Sometimes Norah still can't believe how Christine blew into her life and whisked her away to...

Agony/Ecstasy Anthology: Just Say Yes by HelenKay Dimon

My first HelenKay Dimon stories were the collection of novellas in Viva Las Bad Boys!. I've always felt that HelenKay Dimon is very good at creating a lot of emotion and fun dialogue in shorter lengths. "Just Say Yes" is a little different office romance. Colin and Allie sit on opposite sides of the desk. Allie's on the power side and Colin is her subordinate and while Colin has no problem recognizing his role in the office, he'd like something more. "They'd had eight months of foreplay and o...

REVIEW: Pride and Passion by Charlotte Featherstone

Dear Ms. Featherstone:

I confess that I read this book because I just loved the cover.  The positioning of the characters, the color of the dress, the frills at the cuff of the man's outfit. It was very evocative.  The soft against the hard.  It's a clinch but an evocative, sophisticated clinch.   This is the second book in the Brethren Guardian series and I have not read the first one.

Agony/Ecstasy Anthology: Introducing Edie Harris and her short "Shameless"

Not all the stories in the collection have a happy for now or happy forever after ending.  I felt like that would be okay with readers because most of the stories are fairly romantic but that within this large collection of shorts, I could take chances.  Shameless is one of those stories that doesn't have a definitive ending. Instead Edie Harris invites you to imagine what kind of life the female protagonist would have after she turned her shame into pleasure.

"Is that what you are?" James...

Friday Film Review: Operation Petticoat

Operation Petticoat (1959)

Genre: War comedy

Grade: B

[image error]Since today is Veteran's Day in the U.S. and Remembrance Day in many other countries, I decided to pick a film to pay tribute to those who've served. But I didn't want preachy so that ruled out such things as "The Americanization of Emily." And it had to have some romance so that ruled out a lot of others. With time running out to get this review done, I remembered a film I'd been thinking of reviewing for a while and here it is.

In the UK, a self published author is suing a reviewer for panning his book.
