Book Marketing Mistakes & How to Avoid Them
There are a few major mistakes that many authors make when marketing their books, and as the saying goes, forewarned is forearmed. Because the biggest mistakes are made early in the publishing process, they can be hard to undo. By avoiding these major mistakes, you’ll find your marketing efforts will go much more smoothly.
Mistake No. 1: Not Investing in the Design and Editing of Your Book
Your book itself is your most important marketing tool. If your book is not attractive, no one is going to want to pick it up and no one is going to buy it. The cover, the paper, the editing, the typesetting, the proofreading—all of these components play into the marketability of your book.
How to Avoid Mistake No. 1:
Carefully develop your book (consider content, appearance, pricing).•Refine your manuscript and get help (developmental editors, unbiased feedback).•Create a quality physical product—proofreaders, copy editors, layout artists, cover • designers, high-quality printing.By working with Wheatmark, you will have the advantage of high quality, professional design and production, as well as access to premier editorial services.
Mistake No. 2: Limiting Your Potential Market
Another big mistake many authors make is due to a lack of understanding of traditional publishing industry standards and practices. While targeting your niche core market is your best bet for book sales, you should make your book easily available to all markets, including bookstores and libraries if possible.
Make sure your can offer your book to bookstores at full industry-standard discounts • and with returnability. Bookstores and other volume book buyers need to know that they will make money on your book before they will carry it. This can only happen if they get enough of a discount off the retail price, and can return any unsold copies for refund.Make sure your book has the necessary title • registrations (ISBN, LCCN, EAN barcode) so that retail outlets and libraries can process them easilyMake sure your book is available through Ingram • Book Company, Baker & Taylor, or one of the other major book wholesalers so that retailers and libraries can easily order your book.Rest assured, if you plan to publish with Wheatmark, your book will receive all necessary title registrations, and it will be available to booksellers and other retailers with standard industry terms and discounts.
Mistake No. 3: Not Laying the Groundwork for Your Marketing Outreach
The third crucial mistake that many authors make is delaying the development of their author platform and marketing outreach until after their book has been published. It takes a great deal of time and effort to establish yourself as a trusted presence with the audience to whom you are trying to market your book.
How to Avoid Mistake No. 3:
Begin your publicity, sales, and marketing research and networking as early as possible. Use your existing contacts; start commenting on relevant blogs; join pertinent groups and attend meetings; volunteer for a related cause; partner with another person who shares a common interest or expertise in your book’s subject. Make the effort and give yourself time to establish relationships and make valuable connections that will help when you’re ready to begin your marketing in earnest.
Mistake No. 4: Not Creating a Customized, Strategic Book Marketing Plan
The last major marketing mistake that many authors make is not creating a well-thought-out, targeted marketing plan that takes into consideration their specific core audience, budget, and time line. This is where the Book Marketecture workbook comes in handy.
How to Avoid Mistake No. 4:
Complete the exercises and incorporate the ideas in the Book Marketecture workbook to:Identify and hone your personal vision of marketing success.Identify and hone your key marketing message and core target audience.Create a marketing budget and time line.Identify and implement strategic marketing techniques that will get 4. your core marketing message to your target audience within your budget and time line, to achieve your personal vision of marketing success.

Writing and Presentation for the Queen
[image error]
Envelope with the royal seal
Balmoral Castle
Yesterday I received an e-mail from one of my readers,(September 27, 2012) and she asked me what was it like writing for the Queen of England? was it intimidating?
I'm really shocked that I still get asked that question since it was back in August, 2008. But since it still comes up every so often I figured I would write about it for those that still want to know.
Writing for the British commonwealth Elizabeth II was a wonderful experience, exciting, but most of all an honor.
When I write my creative juices go into overdive, and a million ideas start racing around in my head like they are on a conveyor belt.
The only thing I was thinking about at that time was which idea I was going to set forth on paper. Plus when you write for so long you really don't get intimidated, writing becomes as easy as breathing.
Due to the Queen is revered by her loyal, humble servants, and sits upon a thrown of great praise everyday. That's exactly what I didn't want to do in my works.
I wanted to present the Queen with something unique, out of the ordinary, something she has never experienced before.
So I wrote a poem titled, "O' Blessed Nightingale" a rural poem, using symbolism to embody the spirit of Elizabeth II. Touching slightly down on her royal statue to give the respect of her title, But giving it the uniqueness of my idea.
Here is the poem "O' Blessed Nightingale" I wrote for Elizabeth II, and after I will show you how I presented the poem to the Queen. (Presentation is very important)

"O' Blessed Nightingale"O’ Blessed Nightingale,
fair light-feathered angel,
turned in flight about the forest green.
Where the small hours sweetly
Shadowed the crystal streams and flowering hills
And dawn will never answer.
The days pale complexion has long grown dim,
And it’s placid skies are overpowered
By the empress moon.
That rich light brings numberless
Shades of love and speech to the customary clouds,
Where the wondrous climbs know of its bright settings.
Pure gale will fan those noble wings of golden tender
From on that cedar bough
To soar above those wind driven trees
That couch her nest .
Where every high note heard is
Where every summer eve breathes and flies.
O’ Blessed Nightingale,
O’ Your mused song
O’ the thunder that sweetly trembles,
When she beat her majestic wings in flight.
Composing that choral symphony that softly serenades,
The tranquil night, with that melodious theme.
Twilight's sparkling fays turns the wheels of heavens
Starry chariots, Where the earth angelic sky breathes easily the music.
The South West regions are struck by the midnight sun
Where the cheerful meadows, glisten from in it’s bright columns.
And the warming winds turn the golden leaves
Where the falling dew sweetly moistens the laurel groves.
In a stand of climbing rays that rain fair upon the open glades.
A veil of triumphal lilies held about a dreamy field
Are taken from her gleaming brow.
Where heavens pathway has been lost and her high
Celestial spirit flies by night above the tall
And slender plains.
Soaring freely about this lucent earth.

Presentation
The way I presented the poem was in a beautiful script font on velum paper with a water mark floral design, then placed it in a matching leather presentation folder in a clear sheet protector
I packages my work in a custom made purple box (Purple is the color of royalty) which was covered in designs of the Queen's favorite flower (A rose) and a custom gold bow.
A few weeks later I received a letter from the Queen herself from her private estate expressing her gratitude and telling me that she is an admirer of my work.
