National Short Story Month

I didn't know this until today, but May is apparently National Short Story Month.

Pretty cool.  I'll try to get three new stories of my own up during the rest of the month, but I'll also put up a few from other authors.

Larry Brooks' Story Engineering

If you haven't read Larry Brook's Story Engineering and you're interested in telling stories then you need to read it.  Run, don't walk, to your nearest bookstore, Amazon, or Barnes and Noble and get yourself a copy.  It is pure enlightenment for writers.

I purchased a copy for the Kindle and have read it twice.  The first time to get to the meat of his teachings, the second to delve deeper into the details.  It's a book that warrants re-reading multiple times.  I plan on reading it once a...

Avoiding Writing

Sometimes, for no reason I can immediately think of, I avoid writing.

Take today for instance.  My goal, 700 words, usually takes between 30 and 40 minutes.  Only problem, I've avoided doing it.  I tell myself: Just write for 10 minutes.  I reply: Maybe later.

It's not writer's block.  I know I could put in ten minutes, get out some words, put in ten more minutes and add more words.  There's no fear that I won't know what to write.  (Sometimes I do have that fear, but not at the moment.)  I...
