Recents Poems by Scott Helmes is now available from RedFoxPress | C'est Mon Dada #130
Scott Helmes sent me a copy of his new book
Recents Poems
, published by the cool Redfoxpress out of Ireland. It's a beautiful little book, hand made, and full of asemic script, both collaged and handwritten. The codex captures a wide range of Scott's non-verbal concretes, sonnets, and haiku, though some of the works do contain fragments of lettering. It's a book written in black & white, but works in color are featured on many of the pages, making for a wonderful exhibition of Scott's diverse artistry.I have the good fortune of living in Minneapolis near Scott's art studio. And this fall of 2019, I will be publishing a book of his titled Magazine: The Cut-up Asemics , in an endless edition at Post-Asemic Press.
A6 format (10.5x15 cm / 4 x 6") - 40 pages
cardboard cover, thread and quarter cloth binding
laser printing on ivory paper.
price: 15 euro / 20 US $ / 13 UK Sterling

Asemic: The Art of Writing by Peter Schwenger | University Of Minnesota Press | Pre-order Now: Paperback – December 31, 2019
Asemic: The Art of Writing by Peter Schwenger
The first critical study of writing without language
"In recent years, asemic writing—writing without language—has exploded in popularity, with anthologies, a large-scale art exhibition, and flourishing interest on sites like tumblr, YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram. Yet this burgeoning, fascinating field has never received a dedicated critical study. Asemic fills that gap, proposing new ways of rethinking the nature of writing.
Pioneered in the work of creators such as Henri Michaux, Roland Barthes, and Cy Twombly, asemic writing consolidated as a movement in the 1990s. Author Peter Schwenger first covers these “asemic ancestors” before moving to current practitioners such as Michael Jacobson, Rosaire Appel, and Christopher Skinner, exploring how asemic writing has evolved and gained importance in the contemporary era.
Asemic includes intriguing revelations about the relation of asemic writing to Chinese characters, the possibility of asemic writing in nature, and explanations of how we can read without language. Written in a lively style, this book will engage scholars of contemporary art and literary theory, as well as anyone interested in what writing was and what it is now in the process of becoming."

Metalmatic by Michael Jacobson is up at AngelHousePress for National Poetry Month
Thanks to Amanda Earl for hosting my asemic piece Metalmatic. I created the piece about 2 years ago using a photo I took and then altering it on the computer, by adding an action figure and the asemic script.
Amanda is featuring a month entirely of asemic writing on her website AngelHousePress for NationalPoetryMonth.ca. She is exhibiting some great work by some fantastic asemic authors, with a new piece posted each day during the month of April 2019. The show will be up till February 2020. Here is the link: http://nationalpoetrymonth.ca/
Metalmatic is the April 11th, 2019 feature. But be sure to check out the great work of other asemic scribes daily.
Thanks Amanda!
