The Character of Friends
Where would we be with out the people we let into our lives. Are we as selective as we should be?
The answer for me was no. I was not always as selective, I enjoyed inviting every one into my life. However, once I experienced the true power of real friendship I became extremely selective.
The bonds between my characters in Ladies of Market Street is a bond that I truly wrote from my heart. More important is what I put into some of the more obscure characters who do not take front stage as often, but are still as important.
When I was 19 years old, living in New York City and studying at Circle in the Square Theatre School, I stumbled upon my best friend. The school is set up in a way that puts you in a group of about 15 or so students. You go through the next year of your life with these 15 people and these 15 people alone.
It took me a few months to realize that the girl who dressed like she was always at a rave was actually the jewel of the 15 people I in my life. But once I found her our friendship was set in stone. I got to see through the funky cloths and glow in the dark bracelets, and what I saw was beautiful.
Her name is Phoebe and she is the inspiration for my character Special Agent Holland Rose.
Over the past twelve years that I have known Phoebe she has continued to inspire me every day with her strength and her intelligence. I had to write about it.
I knew that I wanted to have strong women on both sides of the law in my book. So while I was writing Holland I couldn't get Phoebe out of my mind. Suddenly Holland was coming to life.
Holland is the kind of character that not only fights for what she believes in but also educated herself to be the best advocate for those that need her. She has quite literally learned their languages, studied their cultures and put herself in their shoes. This gives her the power to not only save these women in need from their current situations, but also help them from finding themselves back in the same predicament in time to come.
The selfless ability to learn what her friends need and deliver upon it, is just one of the characteristics that I love about Phoebe and why I needed to honor her in my book. She and Holland share many more amazing aspects that bring this charactor to life.
Let me know what you think about Special Agent Holland Rose, and ask me what other qualities she received from Phoebe!
