Alpha Girls of the World
Greetings!
I'm so excited about my forthcoming book, Alpha Girls, to be released in late April. While the book is set in Silicon Valley, the stories of the women profiled transcend place and even time.
The women of my book are the daughters of immigrants, dentists, teachers, and merchants. They came to California with a dream to work in the epicenter of tech. Their stories are very different from one another but they share grit, determination, and a passion for innovation. The women are trailblazers, but were largely written out of history.
I've been collecting stories of other alpha girls across the globe, and will post their stories with notes here from time to time. I hope you enjoy.
Today's post is about an alpha girl in Afghanistan who was the country's first female pilot - an Afghan Air Force captain!
Her story exposed the "limits of what women could accomplish in a deeply conservative country where U.S.-led efforts to empower them have frequently clashed with local culture. Shortly after she graduated pilot training school in 2013, Ms. Rahmani became a public figure.
That is when the death threats began. She became a target for the Taliban insurgency as well as for members of her own extended family."
Love her bravery and determination to follow her dreams.
