The Hungry Family cookbook

I am not a fan of cooking…I really suck at it. Finding cookbooks that are easy to use and have recipes that actually taste good are a godsend. That is what The Healthy Family Slow Cooker is. Great recipes you make in the slow cooker without tons of prep! So far I have successfully made the Butternut Squash Soup (!!), Citrus Pork Salad ( I used chicken since I didn’t have pork…so good!) and the Slow-cooked Molasses Roast. (AMAZING). Next on the menu: Chicken Quesadillas. The whole house smells edible! I can’t wait for dinner! This is my new favorite cookbook. I keep it next to my slow cooker for ease. I HIGHLY recommend this book. I also recommend Dymock's Bacon Lovers cookbook!! See my review here:

Twenty Questions for Authors       Thank you for taking the time to participate in this interview. Below, you will find twenty questions; some are serious while others are playful. Answer as many as you like.
1.       Talk about your latest work. Is it a novel? Short story?  Nonfiction? Give a brief synopsis, sharing as much (or as little) as you like. My latest is the Audiobook of Not So Easy. Of all the books I’ve written, it is my favorite story
 Not So Easy (YA Fantasy) 

Senior Max Sanchez has it all. 
He’s the star pitcher for Port Fare High’s baseball team. He’s dating the 
head cheerleader, Emma McKay, and he has a great group of friends. 

Junior JD Miller’s life is Not So Easy. 
Unlike Max, JD struggles with making friends. He’s a social misfit, and 
he’s being bullied at every turn. He’s also barely surviving. 
A tragic accident changes everything, merging their lives together, 
and Max soon learns that life is not so easy for everyone. Max works to the point of exhaustion trying to help JD survive the chaos that is his life, and his eyes are opened to a world he had no idea even existed. 
Not so Easy is a story about hope, surviving, and never giving up.
2.       Where did you get your inspiration to write you latest work? Or, where do you find inspiration for writing? All over! The world, the news, friends. Also music. It really helps me to play the “song” I feel represents the book I’m working on. I post a playlist for my books on my web page to help the reader get into the story more.




3.       Describe your writing process. Blood, sweat, and tears. Along with lamenting, rethinking, and some head banging…then I begin writing the story.


4.       How important are names to you in your book(s)? Do you choose names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend? Names! I hate trying to come up with names. For the “bad guys” I tend to pick mean people that I know. For the good guys I search and search and search the internet name sites and my Facebook friends until a name rings true.

5.       Is there a certain type of scene that is harder for you to write than others? Not really. Once I’m in the grove all is well.
6.       What is your least favorite part of the writing/publishing process? The first draft. After that it is gravy!
7.       Have you read your work since it has been published? Sometimes.
8.       What is your best marketing tip? Search out bloggers and get reviews for your books.
9.       What are you working on currently? What is your next project? I am in the middle of 2 projects right now. The first is a short story. It is a mystery/comedy. The main character, Aleixa, is a writing who wakes one morning to find the man she’s been dating dead in her living room. The second is a full-length novel about 2 high schoolers struggling to survive not only high school, but their families.
10.    What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors? Write write write and read read read books in your genre!
11.    If you could cast your characters in a Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters? Unlovable is being made into a movie actually by Films by Serendipity. If I were casting it I would pick Lily Collins for Maggie and Liam Hemsworth for Seth!
12.    Do your characters’ personalities reflect your personality or the personalities of people you know? Mostly people I know. I do try and give the characters one of my traits so I can relate to them better.

13.    What is one place you want to visit that you have not visited yet? Greece, and Italy (Tuscany). 14.    What were you like as a child? What was your favorite toy? As a child I was strong and fearless. And I LOVED dolls!
15.    If you had a superpower, what would it be? To fly!

16.    If you were a superhero, what would your name be? What would you wear? My name? No idea, but I can tell you I would NOT wear a skimpy super hero outfit that you see the heros in the movies wear. It’s FREEZING cold the higher you go! I want a nice worm coat… and goggles.

17.    What literary character is most like you? Cinderella…except both my parents are alive and I have no sisters…Hmmmm…Guess I need a new character.
18.    If you were an animal in a zoo, what would you be and why? Monkey. The look like they are having so much fun. I’d be a smart one and figure out how to escape, that’s for sure.

19.    What is one thing you would like to accomplish before you pass away? I’d like to write and uplifting book on motherhood to help encourage mothers and woman everywhere. There is so much negativity out there and I’d like to encourage them to avoid the naysayers.

20.    What do you want your tombstone to say? She came; she tried; she left…and she was a pretty good mom! (I had my 16-year-old son proofread this and he said to change the 'pretty good mom' to awesome mom  ;'} Thank you for letting me be a part of your author interviews!!

“Do you ever write down what you’re thinking?” Luke asked.
Annie's eyebrows arched. He loved the way she did that.
“Would you write for me? What you’re thinking?”
She shrugged her shapely shoulders and studied him for a few seconds before pulling out a notepad. She wrote for a few seconds then handed it to him.
I’m thinking that this cowboy is a nice guy who’s uncomfortable with my silence.
“I guess you got me there. I don’t really talk too much, usually just swear at the cattle. So I’m not a nice guy at all.”
She took the pad back, wrote, and handed it to him again.
You’re definitely a nice guy. I knew that when you bought the thoughtful gift for your sister. Why do you want to take me to dinner? Feeling bad for the new girl in town?
He grinned. “Nope. Feeling intrigued by the new girl in town and wanting to get to know her better.” He handed the pad back to her.
You don’t have the time to get to know me better, it would take hours for me to get anything out with my stutter.
He laughed. “Sweetheart, I’ve got the time and the desire to get to know you better. I really do love the sound of your voice, but if you’re more comfortable we could communicate like this.”
Her grin widened. How about we give it a few days? I don’t go to dinner with men I don’t know.
“How about I come back tomorrow and see you so you don’t have to go to dinner with a man you don’t know?” He paused. “Dang. Tomorrow we’re checking the range cows. Friday?”
She looked dubious.
“I’d like an appointment Friday at five for...” He looked over the list of options. “A foot zone. If you’re available, I’d like to take you to dinner after.”
She wrote quickly. Reading your feet will definitely help me get to know you. Are you sure you’re ready for that kind of disclosure?
A surprised laugh escaped him. “You can tell stuff about me from rubbing my feet?”
She pointed at the word reading.
“Reading my feet?”
She nodded, looking very smug.
“Okay. I have nothing to hide. You’re sure we can’t go to dinner tonight?”
She waved at him.
Luke inclined his head. Annie was a challenge. He liked her more each minute.

It had me in turn laughing and crying, my heart aching for all the characters involved. Gammon's writing is full of humor, sorrow, realism, and pulls you into places you might not want to go, but will be happy you did when all is said and done. I HIGHLY recommend this book!  


*Kindle booklove: Dani: 10 Wonderful, Amazing, Fantastic Stars This story will stay with me forever. It spoke to my soul because I know what it's like to be bullied relentlessly by kids at school and then go home and have to deal with an abusive stepfather and feel like you have nobody to turn to, nobody to trust, and nowhere to go. I know as it said at the end of the book that not all people being bullied have the same home situations but mine almost resembled Izzy's experience with some differences of course. My heart broke while reading about JD's and Izzy's story. I cried for them and their situation. I fell in love with Emma's character because she was one of those rare people with an untarnished soul who doesn't look at people and judge them by what they look like....Read the full review here:* Momma's Books. Brandy: If I could rate this book a 10 I would but Goodreads as well as amazon will only allow a 5. So it is 5+++++++  It was such an emotional read for me. It took me less than 24 hours to read this book once I started I could not put it down.  Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I’m from a cornfield an hour and a half southwest of Chicago and the oldest of three children. I was high school valedictorian and passed the CPA exam after obtaining a Masters degree in accounting. Then I followed my dream and moved to Los Angeles to make a career in acting and not from a cubicle. Every day brings a new adventure!What do you do when you are not acting/narrating? Every day I’m doing something that relates to my acting. Whether it be auditioning, shooting, or social networking, the acting never stops. Even when I’m watching shows on Netflix, I watch certain shows that would appeal to my age demographic.What is your favorite smell? Mom’s pot roast coming from the slow cooker when I travel back to Illinois.What was your first acting project? There were the spring concert shows in grade school, but my first main gig was in the summer before my 8th grade year where I was the ventriloquist’s dummy in the radio show in a production of “Annie”.How/Why did you get into acting? I love entertaining people. After getting a feel of making so many people laugh with my lines, I was hooked. Looking back, I wish I would have pursued in sooner, but I didn’t realize I could make a career of it because of how and where I was raised.If you had 24 hours to live, excluding spending time with your family, what would you do? Skydive, ride in a hot air balloon, bungee jump off a bridge, and take my family to the gorgeous beaches of ThailandWhat is your favorite kind of cheese? It’s hard to pick just one. Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington, Matt Damon, and Tom Hanks are at the top of the list.What is your favorite part of acting and why? Your least favorite and why? Favorite: Things are always changing but yet they are still structured. You may be on the same set, but the storyline is changing and things don’t get stagnant. As long as you believe this is what you were made to do, you will find a way to make it happen.

  Excerpt from The Calm After the Storm: Jake and his crew had now been in the suburbs of New York for a few days. His first thought upon entering this area was his surprise at the devastation. Sure, he had heard about the destruction on the news and had seen footage of the aftermath of Sandy, but it still hadn’t prepared him for the actual sight of Sandy’s rage. Telephone poles were down, trees were snapped in two, and houses were completed destroyed by the storm. Seeing all the destruction only strengthened Jake’s resolve that it had been the right thing to come. He felt proud to be able to help out and be a part of the solution to the horrible aftermath of this disaster.

As the day was wrapping up. Jake and Chris met up with some of their crew in the next town to finish one more area before calling it quits. The chill in the air was something that Jake had prepared for, but was not accustomed to. Clutching the new flannel he had purchased right before his trip, he put it on over his thermal shirt. Thankful for his thermos filled with hot coffee, Jake grabbed it but quickly tossed it aside.
“Come on, Chris! I asked you to stop drinking my coffee. Now there’s none left,” he said as he shook his head, irritated at his friend.
Chris looked up at his boss sheepishly. “Sorry, man. I didn’t sleep well last night. I needed some caffeine.”
“Well, that makes two of us.”
They rode until they approached the utility pole that needed attention. Jake and Chris were among the first to arrive and got busy setting up for the job. Within minutes, the rest of the assigned crew trickled in. The workers were now familiar with the details and routine of this job, so for the most part they worked in silence, focused on getting this last job done so that they could grab some dinner and hit the sheets. It was cold and dark, the night chill settling in upon them. Jake supervised and helped his crew perform their individual duties as quickly as possible. As they were just about wrapping things up, Jake headed over to Steve, one of the older guys directing traffic. He looked frail and tired.
“Hey, Steve. I got this. Why don’t you call it a night, huh? We’ll meet you at the hotel for some dinner.”
“Nah, Jake, we’re almost done here. I’m good,” Steve said as he looked up at Jake with glaring dark circles under his eyes.
“Steve, go. I’m serious. Get in a hot shower and we’ll meet up for dinner. Boss’ orders. Now go and take Andy with you,” Jake gestured toward another man on the crew who looked like he was ready for bed.
Shrugging his shoulders, Steve made his way to one of the smaller utility trucks, calling for his co-worker to join him. Jake took over the responsibility of directing traffic, slowing people down and stopping cars when necessary. Yawning, he waved a small SUV along, noticing that the approaching driver was slowing down, much more than necessary. Jake squinted his eyes to get a better look. The car came to a stop when Jake stepped up to it and its window rolled down. Looking back at Jake was a woman who appeared pretty, even in the diminished light. Wait, scratch that—she was stunning, with long, wavy hair and piercing eyes. His heart faltered just a bit.
“Hi. I wanted to thank you guys for all of the hard work that you’ve been doing. We really appreciate you guys coming up here. I think I speak for everyone,” she said as she smiled widely. Her smile hitched his breath ever so slightly. Jake smiled back. This was certainly a change. Since he had been in this area, some people waved, some people smiled, others remained with their eyes straight ahead, but nobody had yet offered any thanks verbally. So different from the Southern hospitality way of life where he grew up, Jake mused.
Here it was different, the pace of life was much faster. People always seemed to be in a rush, and they minded their own business for the most part. Sure, being so close to the big city must be nice and the landscape was quite beautiful at times, but he didn’t think this lifestyle was something he could ever get used to. It seemed too stressful, too impersonal. He would be glad to be back home when his job was finished.
The woman leaned over and offered Jake a box of donuts, disposable coffee cups, and a box of hot coffee. Jake was impressed.
“Thank you, that was very thoughtful!” Jake gushed, thrilled at the idea of hot coffee. He thought he felt warmth spread across his cheeks despite the chill in the air.
The woman stared back and smiled at Jake for a minute and then set her eyes on the road ahead. She waved as she pulled away.
“Wait!” Jake called out. “Wait, what was your name?” But the words were lost. The mysterious woman with the coffee and donuts was long gone.
“Guys!” he called out as his crew worked on cleaning up for the night. “Guys! Our guardian angel just appeared, and she brought coffee!”
The coffee and donuts were gladly received, but the idea that someone would go out of their way to show a random act of kindness truly touched Jake. He felt the warm liquid slide down his throat and knew that he would always remember the woman’s thoughtfulness. Who was he kidding? That woman’s beautiful face was what he would most remember. He just wished that he had gotten her name.

I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find. I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Author March Madness: Stephanie N. Pitman

Day 16: Author Stephanie N. Pitman   1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I am a middle child, whatever that means, and I am married to a great man and together we have two boys, both of whom are quickly becoming young men and I am not ready for that. I LOVE to read. My favorite book is one I can’t put down. I am drawn to fantasy, but I’ll read anything fiction and some non-fiction.
2. What do you do when you are not writing? As I mentioned I love reading, so I read a lot. But I also love to be physical. I enjoy running, biking, swimming (I’ve competed in 6 triathlons) doing yoga, learning new Zumba songs to teach to my students. These are the things I love to do, but have to squeeze into my crazy life of mom, wife, daycare provider, fitness instructor, spa owner, Sunday school teacher, etc. I don’t know how to say “no”
3. What is your favorite smell? I love the smell of fresh clean laundry. I could bury my nose in it forever. My love of it kind of reminds me of that commercial where Tina Fey is locked in the laundry room smelling dryer sheets, though it doesn’t always unlock my inner muse.
4. When did you first start writing and when did you finish your first book? I first began writing in grade school, but self-esteem issues kept me from pursuing it until I was married and pregnant with our first son and I just had a story that was crying to be told. It was about a piranha cat dog and hopefully will someday become a picture book. My first novel, Honorable Disgrace, I began 5 or 6 years ago and finished it about a year ago. It was just published February 2, 2015 and I am so excited about it.
5. If you had 24 hours to live, excluding spending time with your family, what would you do? This is a tough one. There are so many things on my bucket list, but not many of them can be done in just 24 hours. The most important thing to me in my life is my family, so I would spend every moment with them, playing games, talking, hugging, kissing, crying, laughing…oh wait, you said excluding family…I can’t honestly think of anything I’d rather do.
6. Do you ever experience writer’s block? All the time. Aargh!!!
7. Do you work with an outline, or just write? It really depends on my story and how much I know about it. I do some outlining, but it is mostly organic, and a huge mess until I get through the first draft and that’s when I get excited because I get to shape and mold it into hopefully something fantastic that people can’t put down.
8. What is your favorite kind of cheese? Gouda…because it’s good-a. ☺ Costco sells this amazing smoked Gouda that is creamy goodness.
9. Is there any particular author or book that influenced you growing up or as an adult? No, there is not one particular author, but there are several that inspire me and who’s writing and imagination spurs me on to be my best. A few of them are J.K. Rowling, Julie Kagawa, John Grisham, Brandon Mull and Stephen King. I can only aspire to be in the same class as them one day.
10. Would I find anything growing in your refrigerator right now? It is possible. But I just cleaned it 2 weeks ago, so not at this point. When I cleaned it, there definitely were a few questionable items.
11. How would you describe yourself in three words? Determined. Loving. Capable.
12. Is anything in your book based on real life experiences or purely all imagination? Honorable Disgrace is based on my own experiences as a teen. It was not a book I ever thought I’d write, nor did I ever imagine I’d share some a personal, horrific event with so many. But I felt strength and healing in the writing of Honorable Disgrace and I can only hope others who read it can find the same through Angie’s strength. I only wish I had been as strong as her at that time in my life.
13. Who is your favorite author? Since most of you will probably say me ;) please tell me then, who is your second favorite author? Again, I don’t have a favorite. But if I was forced to pick, right now I’d choose Julie Kagawa. Her stories are brilliant and engaging and original.
14. What was your favorite part of writing and why? My favorite part of writing is the same for me as with reading. I love escaping to another world and with writing I get to create that. I love my life, but I love the escape, the out of this world quality it brings. The possibilities are endless when you are the one behind the story. I would say controlling the story, but more often than not, the story is the one steering.
15. Chocolate or Brussels sprouts? This shouldn’t be a tough question, but it really is. I know that is superbly weird. It should be no contest, but I really love brussels sprouts. Cut in half, sautéed in a bit of coconut oil and sprinkled with a mix of tarragon, chive and sea salt and pepper. Yum. But it would definitely have to be followed up with a serving (or two) or dark chocolate.
 16. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? So far, I have had great reviews and support since becoming published, but prior to that, when I was just getting started, the toughest criticism came from my husband. 
17. What has been the best compliment given to you as an author? This also came from my husband. Since the beginning when he was not the most positive or helpful critique, I never asked for his opinion again. But he started to read my book, and he is not a reader, at all. And he said it was very well written. From him, that is huge.
18. What is your least favorite smell? 
 19. Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?Writer’s write. So make time to write and never give up. You have a story to tell and you are the only one who can tell it.
 20. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers? Every single one of you is appreciated. While I write for myself, ultimately I write for you and without you there would be no one to read my stories, so thank you so much.

Author Bio Stephanie N. Pitman is a writer of fiction and nonfiction.  Her first novel, a YA Contemporary, Honorable Disgrace, is based on her own story of overcoming the ugly side of life, betrayal and rape.  She is a graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature and an active member of the SCBWI.  She has taught preschool for over 12 years and is a motivated entrepreneur, currently operating two successful businesses with her husband, Travis.  Stephanie enjoys spending time with her husband of 16 years, and their two boys, visiting the beautiful splendor and diversity of their home state of Montana.  Along with being an avid reader and dedicated writer, she enjoys pushing herself to her best by competing in triathlons, relay races, and half marathons as well as being a Zumba and Yoga Instructor.
