Mates Collection 2nd Editions by Cardeno C.
Re-Released: Mates Collection
Destined for each other, true mates find love despite the odds.
I released second editions of my Mates books! They're substantively the same, just with new covers and updated editing.
Regarded as the strongest wolf shifter in generations, Alpha Zev Hassick is surprised and confused by his attraction to his best friend. His very human, very male best friend. A male shifter has to mate with a female shifter to keep his humanity, so shifters can't be gay. Yet, everything inside Zev tells him Jonah is his true mate.
Maintaining a relationship with the man he has loved since childhood isn’t easy for Jonah Marvel, but he won’t let distance or Zev’s odd family get in their way. When unexplained ailments begin to plague Jonah, he needs to save his own life and sanity in order to have a future with Zev.
Zev and Jonah know they're destined for each other, but they must overcome traditions ingrained over generations and long-buried secrets to fulfill their destiny.

Raised to become Alpha of the Yafenack pack, Samuel Goodwin dedicates his life to studying shifter laws, strengthening his body, and learning from his father. But despite his best efforts, Samuel can’t relate to people, including those he's supposed to lead.
When Samuel meets Korban Keller, the son of a neighboring pack's Alpha, he reacts with emotion instead of intellect for the first time in his life. Resenting the other shifter for throwing him off-balance, Samuel first tries to intimidate Korban and then desperately avoids him. What he can't do is forget Korban's warm eyes, easy smile, and happy personality.
When a battle between their fathers ends tragically, Samuel struggles to lead his pack while Korban works to break through Samuel’s emotional barriers. Two very different men with a tumultuous history must overcome challenges from all sides and see past their society’s rules to realize they are destined for one another.

Plagued by pain and weakness all his life, Ethan Abbatt is a wolf shifter who can’t shift. Hoping to find an honorable death by joining his pack mates in a vampire attack, Ethan instead learns two things: draining his blood releases his pain and his wolf, and he has a true mate—a vampire named Miguel.
Over four centuries old, strong, powerful, and vicious, Miguel Rodriguez walks through life as a shadow, without happiness or affection. When a young shifter tells Miguel they're true mates, destined to be together, Miguel sends him away. But Ethan is persistent and being with him comes so naturally that Miguel can't resist for long. Their challenge is staying alive so they can be together until forever comes.

Release day imminent

The initial few reviews are out – which makes me excited and nervous all at the same time. Thank you to the reviewers who took the time to read my book and say some kind words about it.
So, the question is, what can I say about the book to entice you to buy? Hmm – it’s funny? It’s sexy? It’s hot-damn Australian?
It may be something that has been mentioned before, but at times Australians seem to have a unique sense of humour. To me it’s not unique – because my father has it, my neighbour has it, the guy at the petrol station has it... To me it’s normal. It often surprises me when the humour isn’t understood by a reader in a different country.
I once worked with a bunch of anthropologists. These anthropologists worked with traditional aborigines in north-west Australia. They once explained to me, that one of the hardest things to get people to do, is to describe intrinsic beliefs and systems. If it’s normal to you, and you don’t know that everyone doesn’t have this same system, then how do you tell outsiders about it?
For example, modern culture simply expects that a mother will birth a baby, and she will look after it, feed it, care for it, etc unless there is a problem. Imagine if there was a culture where a mother birthed a child, and then gave it up to the head of the family to raise as part of their daily life? We, as a modern culture, would cry that it is natural for a mother to care for her child, that it’s nature. But that is our belief. I could cite you a number of animals that don’t care for their off-spring. To them it is natural.
Coming in very close to these cultural norms, are superstitions. Superstitions can range from faith systems (such as “crossing” one’s self when someone mentions Satan), to luck systems (carrying around a rabbit’s foot), to unexplainable systems (like not washing your socks for the whole football season). I remember studying for my exams using a particular pen, and then insisting on taking that pen into the exams with me – because it knew all the answers. Logically it was irrational, but it was something I needed to do, or fail the exam. My BFF’s father banned me from their house when he learned I had not been christened. He thought the house would fall down – despite the fact that I had been inside dozens of times without a single shake of a weight-bearing beam.

Magic 8 Ball.
Davo uses his Magic 8 Ball to make major decisions in his life. Like whether to visit his mother on a particular day, and when to call Lee. Not only does he use the Magic 8 Ball, he slavishly adheres to its advice.Monday morning I consulted Mr. Magic 8 Ball again.
“Should I message Lee this morning?”
Very doubtful.
I sighed in relief and went to work.
Lee however doesn’t believe in it.
I left him to wake up and returned to the kitchen. I poured the coffee and slid the yellow mixture onto plates. Then I picked up Mr. Magic 8 Ball.
“Will I need to wake Lee again this morning?” I shook the ball and turned it up.
My sources say no.I smiled and sat at the table, not realizing I was being watched, until he spoke from behind me. “You really believe that shit, don’t you?” he said as he plonked down on the chair opposite me.
“Huh? What?”
“The Magic 8 Ball. You realize it’s a toy, don’t you?” He picked up his coffee mug and took a sip. Then he screwed up his face. “Ugh. Sugar, darling, sugar. Never feed me coffee without it.”
I laughed and got up to retrieve the sugar bowl. “My Mr. Magic 8 Ball is not a toy,” I said as I pulled the bright yellow bowl from the pantry. “He’s an oracle and is all knowing.”
Lee studied my face for a moment. Then his jaw dropped. “Oh my God. You’re serious.”
His face was disbelieving, so I picked up my oracle on the way by and placed the sugar bowl within Lee’s reach. Then I said, “Is Lee mocking me?”
Signs point to yes.
I showed Lee the answer with a smirk. “He’s never wrong.”
It gets a few laughs throughout the story, and it makes Dave more real to me. But do you want to know something funny? Not funny as in ha-ha. Funny as in you-are-shitting-me.
EVERY SINGLE ANSWER IN THE STORY IS REAL.
While writing this story, each time Davo reached for his Magic 8 Ball, I used an internet Magic 8 Ball site for the answer. I would type in “Should Davo message Lee now?”, and whatever the answer it brought up, then I put it in the story. If the Magic 8 Ball said yes, then Davo did it. If it said no, then he didn’t.
MAGIC 8 BALL CREATED THE STORYLINE.

It told Davo (and thus the author, me) when he was going to visit Jake, when he was going to visit his parents, and just when he forgave Lee.
Now if that isn’t enough to prove to you that the oracle never lies, then I don’t know what is... **wink**
You Are the Reason releases this Friday, 7th of August. I hope you enjoy.

A Year of Many Firsts by Felice Stevens

Last August, my first book, Rescued came out and it was surreal not only to see my book up for sale but know that people bought it. The first time a reader messaged me and told me she loved my book I think I couldn't speak for a while. My kids and husband appreciated that, I'm sure.
Oh yeah and a little thing like sleep. I don't do much of that. I need to figure out how to get some more sleep. But that's another post for another week.

I decided for my next book (A Walk Through Fire) to write a three book series; the Through Hell and Back books are my first attempt at series writing. As a pantser, which means I don't plan the book out ahead of time, I just "go with the flow,"it was a challenge to keep all the details of the different character's lives straight throughout all the books.

Oh and I had another book release - a contemporary novel called One Step Further.
Two weeks later my son graduated high school and in two weeks I'll be driving to Montreal to bring him to college. All this while working full time and trying to find time to write all the stories floating around in my head.

I'm looking forward to sharing my adventures with you here at Cafe Risque on Fridays. Now I'm off to turn up the setting on that treadmill ....

Unwinding
It's been a pretty busy couple weeks for me. Well, the whole summer, actually but the past couple weeks even more so. It's hard to get everything done during the summer and this week CROSSROADS released. It's been SO fun. I can't tell you how honored I feel reading the reviews and hearing from readers about how they felt about the story. I'm so glad people have enjoyed it so much. It's been a whirlwind of excitement, and fear and business that now I just need to unwind.
That's where you come in :)
Reading is definitely my way to unwind. I love losing myself in a book. It's exactly what I need right now so I want you guys to tell me what I should read. What's the last book you fell in love with? What are you reading now and what should I try?
Hope you're having an awesome week!

Sorry for the Absence - Conferences, Conferences

So... some things I learned. From now on Dominic keeps track of the calendar so I don't get over booked. Also I need to learn to say no occasionally, but dang that's a hard one, especially when I want to see everyone. I definitely need to give myself more time between conferences. (And if I can get my family to hold off on the drama till I can get home, that would be pretty amazing too.)
However the thing is that each of these conferences was pretty special in their own way. I met some amazing people that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise. I rekindled some friendships, and mostly I got to be around authors and readers of gay romance. That's always an amazing time.

Happy Monday! (I made it just under the wire with this post!) I've been having fun visiting with Ora so I haven't had time to write a blog post but I'll make it up to you by sharing a great coupon.

You Are the Reason - and Bronies
We are now on the countdown to the release day of You Are the Reason. Thirteen days. Yes, my latest “baby” releases on the 7th of August, which means my blood pressure is up, and I struggle to concentrate on tasks.
My best friend calls them “Freak Out Fridays” – in other words, release day.
So some of the ARCs (advance release copies) have been sent out to the reviewers, and I’m now sweating on whether or not they liked it. So yesterday, when my favourite reviewer sent me this image, I had to smile.
She had started the book and had seen the first chapter, which begins like this:
Poor Davo. He struggled as a child against homophobia, and came out the loser. And thus, we begin to understand the man. Chapter one finishes like this:
The picture becomes clearer. Davo, the child, had been ridiculed and taunted, and so in his desire to fit in, he’s stopped all his girly actions. He himself is afraid of “those” gays. He doesn’t want to be one of those gays, and he doesn’t want to hang out with them. So he hangs with Jake, who is gay but doesn’t do relationships, just like Davo. Jake is not girly. But suddenly Jake’s life changes, and now Davo’s afraid. He’s running scared of girl-germs. And the last thing he expects is to fall for Lee.
Because, you see, Lee is one of “those” gays. Oh, we never find out if he knows all the songs to High School Musical, but the fact that Davo doesn’t realise Lee is a guy the first (or second) time he meets Lee, rather tells its own story.
One of the editors who worked on the story, mentioned “Bronies” to me. I didn’t know what they were, so I turned to my faithful Google who showed me. When the first image that Google turns up is this one, you know that Bronies are not something that all people are going to admire.
Basically, a Brony is an adult male that enjoys the My Little Pony franchise. Delve a little deeper, and you find a cult following. Rivalling Trekkie and LARP enthusiasts, Bronies are proud people. Of course there are always going to be those who ridicule them, but wow – the lengths and imaginations of some of these guys are amazing. I am in awe of them. Some of the images on Google are ridiculing them, but they are not to be shamed or bullied.
One of my readers posted a gif on Goodreads when they learned I had a new book coming out. Lili chose a My Little Pony gif to express her excitement – and she doesn’t realise how accurate she is.

However Davo is not a Brony. He loved My Little Pony as a child – and what adult doesn’t look back upon their favourite toys with a bit of fondness, and a bit of cringe. My favourite childhood toys at around 9-11 years of age were attached to Barbie and the Rockers. Yeah, I cringe a little at the remembrance. In Davo’s case, his cringe is more than usual. He thinks he should erase all thoughts and happiness attached to My Little Pony.
You Are the Reason is Davo’s journey to the realisation that being femme or girly or one of “those” gays is not something to be ashamed of. It is a story of a guy who faces his fear, and pushed through.
And yeah, okay, at the end there is another My Little Pony reference, which I hope leaves you smiling. Which is why my reviewer sent me this picture when she finished reading.
I hope you all enjoy. Releases 7 August 2015.

Blurb:
Davo’s a pretty average guy. He has a decent job, owns his own home, and spends his weekends at the pub. He fully accepts that he’s gay, but doesn’t want to be one of those gays, who are femme and girly. He likes football and other masculine pursuits, and firmly avoids anything that could be seen as femme—including relationships that last beyond fifteen minutes.
Then Davo’s friend and gay idol not only gets a boyfriend, but also adopts a baby girl. Davo is seriously spooked and scuttles down to the pub in fright. That’s where he meets Lee, who is cute from her cherry-red hair, to her pretty little dress and pointy red shoes. Davo is charmed—but how is that possible? He’s gay. Isn’t he? Then Lee tells him he’s actually a guy—he just likes to wear women’s dresses occasionally. Thoroughly confused about an attraction that’s out of character for him, Davo begins the long journey to where he can accept himself without caring what everyone else thinks.

An introduction to Davo
When I was eleven years old, I worked out what it was to be gay. Being gay meant you were a boy but liked girly things. Being gay meant you were bashed at school and ridiculed by the sports teacher. Being gay was not good.
I didn’t want to be gay.
So I took my entire My Little Pony collection, which I had lovingly looked after for years, and I dumped it all in the bin. And I didn’t cry. Much.
Poor Davo. He struggled as a child against homophobia, and came out the loser. And thus, we begin to understand the man. Chapter one finishes like this:
Then Jake—my gay idol—up and got himself a boyfriend and adopted a baby. I internally crapped my pants. Moondancer, Applejack, Sunburst, and Minty all laughed at me from their My Little Pony heaven, telling me that sooner or later I was going to end up as one of those gays who called everyone “darling” and knew all the songs from High School Musical.
So the day I met Lee, you’ll forgive me for not noticing every little thing about him….
The picture becomes clearer. Davo, the child, had been ridiculed and taunted, and so in his desire to fit in, he’s stopped all his girly actions. He himself is afraid of “those” gays.
