Queen + Adam Lambert -- the show DID go on! And on!
On July 20th, which was a week and a half ago, I had the opportunity to see Queen perform, with Adam Lambert stepping into the shoes once filled by the late (and much lamented) Freddie Mercury.
Allow me to say up front that Lambert is no Freddie. That's not an insult, by the way. Nobody could ever be Freddie except Freddie himself. What Adam Lambert is, is... Adam Lambert.
He's stunning, wears costumes and makeup with panache, and when he opens his mouth to sing, he amazes.
When he opens his mouth to sing Queen, he's downright improbable (in the sense of... it seems improbable that this man can hit those notes and hold them the way he does, while running around on stage, and yet he can and does).
There was no opening act, so when I say the show lasted just over two hours, without any real break, I truly mean the Queen show lasted that long. The guys took the stage right around 8:15 p.m. and finished up just before 10:30.
There were a few extended guitar solos and such -- probably to let the rest of the men rehydrate, rest their eyes slightly from the bright lights that were glaring on them, and of course for Lambert's costume changes. There were a fair number of those changes, which isn't even a little bit surprising. I had a band for a number of years (not recently, but still) and part of the fun of performing was coming out in something I hadn't been wearing when I left the stage two minutes earlier. I can't imagine it's any different for Lambert. (We dramatic types enjoy drama. Shocking, right? :P )
I'm not going to run down every minute of the show here. I honestly don't have that kind of time and I doubt anyone wants to hear excruciating detail, coming second-hand, as it were. What I will do is relate what I found to be some of the highlights.
Several of my favorite songs of all time are Queen songs, and as I said above, Adam Lambert is no Freddie Mercury. He is, however, the only current singer I feel can do justice to the words and music. Because songs aren't just meant to be sung. They're meant to be emoted. To evoke an emotional, visceral response, whether that response is happiness, sadness, or something in between. Lambert does exactly that with Queen. He was by turns bold, wistful, proud, and sad... and that was just during Bohemian Rhapsody! :P
That's actually one of the songs I'll never forget, so it was great to hear it; especially because Lambert's performance was interspersed with filmed footage of Freddie himself performing the same song. (This happened on a few songs, and it was brilliant and wonderful and a tiny bit depressing because it just served to remind me that Freddie died much too young.)
Killer Queen was incredibly fun and highly amusing, as Lambert camped it up. There was a rather ornate gold and what appeared to be velvet couch of sorts, upon which he lounged and stretched like a big cat while singing. He had the absolute right degree of over-the-top drama going on and I loved it!
One of my favorite movies of all time is Highlander (the original, not the two that came after). I won't go into the plot and whatnot. If you haven't seen it, you should, and if you have seen it, you'll know what I mean when I say Queen's song Who Wants to Live Forever worked with the film to break my heart a little. Lambert did this song perfectly. I mean perfectly!
I was prepared to be disappointed, because no matter how well the man sings, this song is special to me. I expected him to overdo it; to make it too... something.
Instead, while Lambert's performance was definitely dramatic, it was also gut-wrenching and sorrow filled, which is exactly as it should be. Color me truly impressed. :)
The entire show was incredible, but none of it more so than seeing Brian May and Roger Taylor out there, easily keeping up with Lambert. Roger Taylor's son also did some drumming, keeping with the family legacy, one assumes. Brian May's extended guitar solo (I swear it must have been ten minutes, with just him and his guitar on stage) was brilliant, and he has a lovely voice, though he insisted otherwise. *grins*
The show closed out with We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, both of which Lambert put his own stamp on, of course. :D
It was an incredible night and I'm truly happy to have been there. If you weren't able to catch any of the tour and have the opportunity in future, I strongly urge you to go! Or go again, if you did make it this time! *grins*
Below, you'll find a few links to videos from the tour (though not all are from the specific show I saw). These are on YouTube, provided by TALC, and the quality is very good for a live show. Thanks in advance to TALC and I hope you don't mind me linking. :)
In no particular order (and by no means the full complement of songs performed), I give you... Queen + Adam Lambert!

Ask Andrew - Being Single
Dear Andrew
I have a 2-part question: 1) When you an Dom met at the party, why were both of you unattached at the time? 2) Who is more aggressive, you or Dom; for instance in public and at home?
MSM
Dear MSM
When Dominic and I met in February 1994, both he and I were unattached. I had been in a weird relationship up until a few months earlier. (I really don't want to talk about it because its really too weird to explain) Let me just say his issues had issues. Dominic had been seeing someone a few months earlier as well, but it hadn't gone anywhere for him either.
As for who is more aggressive. I tend to be the aggressive one in the relationship, but it depends on the situation. In public I'm the more aggressive, but in a restaurant when we get poor service or bad food, he turns into a pain in the ass from hell until he gets satisfaction. Dominic also rules in the kitchen. I stay out of there at almost all costs. In other areas, I tend to take the lead. Now if you're asking who is more aggressive in the bedroom... well that I'll leave up to your fertile imaginations. :)
One thing that we both feel is important, as in any relationship, is open communications. Dominic and I talk about things and make decisions together. The decisions I make affect him and the ones he makes affect me, so we tend to try to discuss things and come to an agreement before undertaking a course of action.
Hugs and love
Andrew
Ask Andrew is your chance to ask questions of a gay romance author. The questions can be about the writing process in general, writing sex scenes, gay men, sex, characters in romance, characters having sex... okay you probably get the picture. I promise to answer your questions as frankly and with as much humor as I possibly can.
So if you have a question, please send it to andrewgreybooks@comcast.net. This is different from my usual email so your questions don't get lost. I will answer one question a week.
Please remember this is meant to be all in fun. (I was going to say good, clean fun, but who wants that.) So send me your questions and let's see what mischief we can get into.

Song Inspirations (Siete) by Cardeno C.
Happy Monday! Today I'm sharing the song inspirations for the standalone novels in my Family series.
Something in the Way He Needs - Something by the Beatles
In Something in the Way He Needs, Asher Penaz is a rough, non-emotional man who has no interest in relationships and frequents leather bars so he can find men to control sexually. Asher's intensity and harshness make him a hard man to like. But good-at-everything, dynamic Daniel Tover is the ying to Asher's yang and he has no trouble falling for Asher.
Asher is irresistibly drawn to Daniel, which throws him for an emotional loop (not an easy thing to endure for a man unused to emotions). But there's just something in the way Daniel needs to be held tightly that attracts Asher. To most people, what Asher offers would be frightening and controlling. To Daniel, who has spent his life running from place to place, Asher's intensity and passion represents security and home. So for the first time in their lives, Asher wants somebody to stay and Daniel doesn't want to leave.
Strong Enough - Strong Enough To Be Your Man by Travis Tritt
In Strong Enough, Spencer Derdinger is a kind, intelligent professor tormented by events in his past that have made it difficult to maintain a relationship. Spencer's ego has taken a beating by the people that fade away from him. And then vibrant, confident, kind Emilio Sanchez walks into his life insisting he is strong enough to hold Spencer through the storm. Looking at Emilio's close-knit family and the future he can have with a man he feels is too good to be true, Spencer finds the strength to vanquish his ghosts.
More Than Everything - Pictures Of You by The Cure
I absolutely love this song, have since it was released, and I couldn't imagine a more perfect song to keep me company as Charlie/Chase Rhodes put together a scrapbook of his life.
Charlie sits at his table and tells the story behind pictures of his great loves - Scott Boone and Adan Navarro. He remembers the kisses, the tears, the love that felt too big to keep, and the pain of losing it. Charlie remembers his past step by step and through the pictures he puts into his scrapbook, he shares his heart, his world, his wants, and ultimately, his happy ending.
Have a terrific week.

Thanks for joining us at Café Risqué today. Can you tell us briefly about Looking After Joey?Sure! It’s The Purple Rose of Cairo meets gay porn. In Woody Allen’s comedy, Mia Farrow goes to the movies daily to swoon over movie star Jeff Daniels. One day he looks out and beckons her to come into his movie. She does and, in turn, she brings him out into this world. Now, imagine that with gay porn. Our hero, Calvin, enters a porn video in pursuit of his romantic obsession, Joey. Joey then follows Calvin out into what we would call reality. Hilarity ensues. Some very touching moments also ensue. Calvin in effect becomes like a dad. Of a very odd sort.
How would you classify your writing, genre-wise? Both Joey and my first novel, Bob the Book, have been called speculative fiction. Bob was called a romance, and Joey has been embraced by the M/M romance community, too. I would say the most important thing to me is the comic-picaresque aspect, the theatricality of the author deliberately juggling everything but the kitchen sink. I’m in love with the elements of narrative. More characters! More incidents! What other novel has lubricant, cheese (the dairy kind; get your mind out of the gutter!), porn stars, Dawn Upshaw, butt plugs, Christopher Isherwood, scat videos, a perfectly ridiculous jukebox musical and a Roman soldier with a crucifixion fetish? Now, all that makes it sound “wacky.” It’s really not. It’s very sweet. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry some, too. The main thing real life has that porn doesn’t is time passing. As times passes in Joey, people grow and move on but stay loyal to one another. It’s very touching. Life should be more like that. But you will definitely laugh, too! It’s been great for publicity. People report laughing out loud at Joey on the bus or subway, so others ask them what they are laughing at, and they tell them about the book!
cover by Peach Boy Design and Distillery and (c) 2012 Chelsea Station editionsYou’ve had a long career. Can you tell us briefly about it and how that led to your writing Joey?I published short stories for years before publishing a novel. In short stories you can experiment a lot, because if it doesn’t work, you just move on; the investment has not been much. My story collection, My Movie, not only has the story that was the seed for Joey, it has a story about a woman who goes walking through the fictional land her son and his best friend created for movies they made as adolescents. There’s a story about a man who hooks up with a stranger and finds a mysterious—and horrifying—second bedroom in what the stranger insists is a one-bedroom apartment. A man with AIDS is carried to Heaven or Hell (we’re never sure) by a convoy of semi trucks. In one of my unpublished stories, a geranium rapes an adolescent boy and performs a sex-change operation on him. No only does the short form allow for more narrative risks, those risks are likelier to pay off, because you have more control than with a novel. Nonetheless, the success of those short fiction experiments probably helped convince me that I could try a whole novel with a crazy premise. Actually, Joey has about five crazy premises.
What makes Joey a book only you could have written? (I sort of stole this question from Chuck Wendig, but I love it, so you can blame him for this one)I would like to think that no one else combines irreverence and tenderness in quite the same way I do. Often in the exact same moment. Joey has an interesting speculative (I would almost call it paranormal) element combined with a sort of satirical take on porn. For me, it provoked a lot of thought about the way we view adult actors and other sex workers in society. Personally, some of my favorite sex workers have additional jobs—they’re computer engineers or anthropologists or biochemists—yet early in the book, Joey is presented as a childlike blank slate. Was this intended to make a statement about the way we generalize adult models and actors? Was there a different message you wanted readers to grasp?Keep in mind that Joey is not a real live porn actor. He is a porn character. He is a persona, not a person. The novel is about him becoming a person. But the persona we start with is nonetheless very lovely—sweet and giving and appreciative, and he never loses that, even though he witnesses some less-than-kind human behavior. You write a very colorful cast of characters. I especially enjoyed Peachy, and his quirks. Did you feel more connected to anybody in this story, in particular? Calvin is the most like me. That’s why he gets a lot of complex solo scenes—at the Prado and then at the clothing store in Madrid; watching the YouTube video with Dawn Upshaw; or the scene that might be my favorite: his thoughts while watching Peachy and Joey bop down the street singing songs from the musical they have just seen. (Devising that fictional musical was a little treat I gave myself!)

What do you like to do with your spare time?Do I even have spare time? I’m not sure. Regardless of income or lack of, I consider writing a profession, so time spent writing is certainly not spare, nor is time spent doing anything that supports writing, like blog posts and other social media. I do listen to music when I can, all types. And I walk, as in, for my health. And I like to cook, which I rarely get to do these days at any complex level. What’s next for you?
A young adult book—with a bookstore in it! I have a long manuscript about my college days and a shorter one about a woman who grows up as the daughter of a Broadway composer. And there are short stories in various stages of development. One is about a man who hears whispering everywhere in his house, unless he goes into his home office, where it is perfectly silent. Until…well, I’ll have to see if I can get that one published. Thanks so much again for being such a fan and for having me as a guest today!

Well, be careful what you wish for. Because that’s how Calvin and Peachy end up looking after Joey. And teaching him everything he needs to know to be be a gay man in New York City. His final exam? A fabulous Labor Day party on Fire Island. But first, they all have to get invited. This will involve a rogues’ gallery of eccentric Manhattanites, including portly, perspiring publicist Bunce van den Troell; theatrical investor Sir Desmond Norma; studly thespian Clive Tidwell-Smidgin; lubricant king Fred Pflester; and a mysterious young man named Jeffrey. Tender, wise, witty and often utterly deranged, Looking After Joey will make you wish that you, too, had a porn character at your kitchen table asking, “So, when can I have sex?”Find it: Amazon | Wilde City Check out the book video, here.

Introducing Renae Kaye
Hello world!
My wonderful, wonderful fellow release-day author, Cardeno C., has invited me to share in Café Risque and I nearly broke an ankle in my rush to accept. So I’m happy to be blogging to you from this fantastic site.
Umm – who are you?
Oh, sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Renae Kaye.
Who?
Oh. Well, I’m an author with Dreamspinner Press. My debut novel, Loving Jay came out in April – on the same day as Cardeno’s Control. My second novel, The Blinding Light was released last week – ironically on the same day as Cardeno’s In Your Eyes. So I think that Cardeno is my good luck charm!
Oh, congratulations. So tell us a bit about you, Renae.
Thanks! Me? I’m a humble author who types away at her laptop while her children are engrossed in Disney’s latest offerings. I’m new to authoring, so I’m still very excitable at every single thing that happens (forgive me!) and when talking to other authors, I’m often found to be fangirling as I feel I’m hanging out with the “cool kids” from high school. Oh – and I’m an Aussie, so forgive the accent. I live in Perth, Western Australia.
Umm – where?

So, near Sydney?
Hint. Australia is a big, big country full of kangaroos. Sydney is on the opposite side of the continent. Around 4000 kilometres away. Yes, you read right. About the same distance as New York to Los Angeles, or twice the distance from London to Naples.
Oh. Perth! Got it! So what do you do in Perth?
Me, personally? I read a lot of books. Perth is quite a city now – we have over two million people. And we have cars, and houses, and internet, and everything! Pretty much like any other city in North America or Europe.
Except for the Australians. We have a lot of them in Perth. And snakes. And spiders.
Eek! How do you survive? The snakes and spiders, I mean. Not the Australians, because I’m sure they don’t bite. Do they?
Most Australians are very well behaved – non-aggressive and will not attack unless provoked. The snakes and spiders? Yeah, well. You just learn to adapt. You don’t walk softly through long grass (stomping the ground makes the snakes skitter away) and you don’t stick your hand into dark places. When you do get bitten, then you just toddle off to the doctor. Medicine is great these days, isn’t it?
Oh. Can we forget about the critters? Tell me about your books instead?

The Blinding Light takes you into the world of snarky but upbeat Jake. Jake has an enormous plate of responsibilities, and is drowning in debt as well as trying to look after his three younger sisters and alcoholic mother. He takes a housekeeping job to a rude and arrogant blind man. Patrick was born without sight, and shuts himself away from people with bossy notes and fussy rules. When they meet, a friendship begins. When that friendship develops, Jake thinks that this may be his chance to break free. But can he allow himself?
They sound great! Do you have any more coming?
Well since you asked… I have a short story coming in several weeks. It’s a part of Dreamspinner’s new anthology, A Taste Of Honey . B.G. Thomas has been working really hard to get this anthology together.
B.G. Thomas? He’s on this Café Risque blog as well, isn’t he?
He is indeed! I’m among exaltedness. B.G. had this great idea to do an anthology on bears, and guess what? It’s nearly here. 18th of August.
Do you wanna see the cover?
Yes, please.

Oh, nice one.
I know. Hawt, right? I know that beards are not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m hoping that readers snatch up this book and love the guys inside. All characters need to be loved, don’t they?
They do. So now that you are on this blog, what are you going to do?
Ah – good question! I’m not quite sure. But I’ll be posting every Saturday. So feel free to comment, or ask a question, or follow the blog, or whatever. If you want to know something specific – about Australia, about me or about my writing, feel free to drop me a line. You can email me on renaekaye@iinet.net.au.
I’ll see you next Saturday. <waving>

Ask Andrew - Those Pesky Other Holes We Make for Ourselves
Dear Andrew
My question is this..what is your opinion on piercings? My 39 yr old brother has decided to get a piercing on his penis. Not sure what kind but this is so far from anything I ever expected from him. I wasn't shocked when he got all the tattoos he has but this threw me. I asked him why and he said he wanted, since his car accident, to "Live life to the fullest" and express himself. How a piercing can do that I have no clue. I did ask, however since I am the big sister, lol How will people see this expression? Will he show it at parties and family occasions? Love this kid to death but it worries me. So what is your opinion on them.
LeeAnn
Dear LeeAnn
Okay. I'll start by saying that I used to have a piercing on my left nipple. It grew out so I no longer have a tinsel tit. Anyway, tattoos and piercings are a form of personal expression and even a piercing on the penis falls into the category. Think of it as intimate personal expression. And no, he shouldn't be taking it out at parties or family gatherings. (That part of your note had this middle aged man cackling like a fool. I loved that line.)
You asked for my opinion, so I'll give it to you. Body piercings are not to be done lightly and without thought, especially intimate ones. They are not like piercing ears. Body piercings of any type require extra care and are unfortunately a potential source of infection, even after a long period of time. I have a friend who got her lower lip pierced. The piercing became infected, bit she wasn't aware of it. The infection spread to her lower jaw, which had to be rebuilt because it ate away most of the bone. She was lucky. They caught it when the jaw broke, but before it got to her brain. I don't use this story to scare anyone, just to give you something to think about. I had a piercing and loved it, but I took careful care of it and I believe everyone should.
As for more intimate piercings. There isn't any way anyone is getting anywhere near Mr. Happy with a piercing needle or anything else sharp. I'm just too squeamish. However if your 39 year old brothers wants to get his penis pierced, I'd say he had guts, and balls for that matter. LeeAnn, please make sure your brother is fully informed about the ramifications of what he wants to do. That's your job as a sister. His job is to make an informed decision and if he decides to go through with it, take proper care of the piercing.

Cover reveal: Full Circle by Riley Hart
I'm very excited to present the next upcoming release from my buddy Riley Hart, the sequel to her awesome emotional menage story, Broken Pieces. Full Circle is coming out in September 2014! Add it to your Goodreads TBR, now!
Cover Photo by Jackson Photografix
About Full Circle:
Nothing in life is ever easy, and no one is more painfully aware of that than Josiah Evans, Mateo Sanchez, and Tristan Croft. They know what they want—each other—but with three people as broken as they are, all those pieces aren't so easily mended.
Josiah is their glue. All he wants is to give his men what they need.
Mateo wants to absolve himself of his sins. To be worthy of love and to protect it.
Tristan must let go of his past, must learn how to need, and what it really means to take care of someone.
To keep the balance intact, they all have their roles to play. But what happens if the balance shifts? What happens when someone doesn’t play the right part? If one of them falters, they all feel the strain.
The only way to complete their full circle is for all their pieces, despite the curves and rough edges, to fit together perfectly. To do that, Josiah, Mateo, and Tristan must learn to get over the pasts that have defined who they are. And when an old enemy returns and threatens the foundation of their new life, decisions will be made, and boundaries will be tested that could change their lives forever.
Excerpt:Unedited and subject to change.

CHAPTER ONEJosiah
Josiah stood in the middle of the building that would soon be his coffee house. In the two weeks since they’d gotten Rhonda back, and Tristan had come home to Josiah and Teo, things hadn’t stopped moving. They hadn’t had much time for anything between Tristan being busy at work, getting Rhonda settled back into her apartment, and now this. This being his dream—the one thing Tristan and Teo had both insisted they made time to get done, sooner rather than later. In so many ways, Josiah owed Teo his life. Teo had physically saved him more than once and now he owed Tristan his dream—the only thing beside the two men standing next to him that he felt could complete him, in a way. Because they did complete Josiah. Josiah turned to Tristan in his perfect suit, and studied the sharp cut of his jaw. Leaning over, Josiah kissed him there. “I can’t believe you did this for me.” Though he really could believe it. Tristan was like Teo in that he didn’t realize how big his heart was—at least when it came to Josiah. “It’s nothing.” Tristan shook his head, uncomfortable with praise, as always. That was something they needed to work on. Both his guys did. “Think of it as a business investment. I don’t waste money on things that I don’t feel are important—on things where I don’t see a profit.” Josiah rolled his eyes. Tristan could play this off however he wanted. Josiah knew the truth. As did Mateo and Tristan himself. He’d done this because he loved Josiah. Josiah didn’t doubt that, even if Tristan hadn’t said it again since the one time the words left his lips two weeks before. There had never been a second he believed everything would get magically fixed in that one night but they were on the right path. They’d get there, and things were better. “We shoulda’ brought beer. Aren’t you supposed to drink somethin’ to celebrate shit like this?” Mateo stepped around them, fingering one of the earrings in his ear. Josiah watched him, wondering how this happened. How he not only fell in love with an ex-gang member and a state prosecutor, but how they were all three lucky enough to fall in love with each other. “Wine. You drink wine on occasions like this. Or champagne, actually. I promise, I’ll convert you one day.” Tristan stopped beside Teo, a half-smile on his lips. “Nope. Never gonna happen. That shit’s too stuffy for me. It’s for rich, white guys.” Tristan stepped closer to Mateo and Josiah just watched. He loved watching his men interact with each other—thrived on the light moments they had where they could laugh and tease because they were too few and far between. Tristan held Teo’s chin between his thumb and first finger. “And yet I’m sure you never saw yourself enjoying a rich, white man. That changed, as will the rest.” Teo jerked out of Tristan’s grasp but there was a small grin on his lips. “White boys are my downfall. Come ‘ere, Jay.” Little jolts of electricity fired beneath Josiah’s skin, at the deep, husky sound of Teo’s voice. Both of these men could do that to him, turn him on, turn him inside out with just a word. With just a look. Josiah moved forward, stopping in front of Teo, who leaned against the counter. Tristan stood next to them both, facing them. This time, it was Teo who grabbed Josiah’s chin, except he only tilted it up as he leaned forward. His mouth covered Josiah’s gently…always so tender when he touched Josiah. It was different than the way he handled Tristan, than the way Tristan handled either of them, with wild hunger. How could he love something that was basically the opposite in both of them? Loved the way Teo was always so careful with him, treasuring Josiah as though he had to protect him, even in something like a kiss; while at the same time, loving that Tristan knew he didn’t have to be. Or maybe he didn’t know how to be. He felt the passion in them both—one gentle and the other fierce but each equally strong. Funny, that it was the man who’d seen death, who had delivered death that had the need for the softness. Teo’s tongue dipped into Josiah’s mouth, owning it the same way Tristan did when he kissed Josiah. Teo was the first man he’d had his mouth on, and he knew it as well as he knew his own. Knew the feel of Teo’s tender press of lips, knew the difference between his facial hair rubbing against Josiah’s compared to the texture of Tristan’s.Josiah stepped between his legs, their bodies touching.Too soon, Teo pulled back, before turning his head Tristan’s direction. His other lover gave a short, almost curt looking nod. When he did, Teo leaned Tristan’s way this time. Josiah still stood between Mateo’s legs as he took in the sight of his lovers kissing, and eased Tristan’s fingers away from his pulse as Tristan let Mateo lead the kiss. Tristan’s hand tightened around Josiah, as though Josiah was giving him something in this moment too. Maybe others wouldn’t understand it. Josiah had no doubt they wouldn’t but he knew he gave Tristan as much as Mateo did as they kissed. Knew the three men all gave each other something they needed. When Mateo pulled away from Tristan, Tristan spoke. “I seem to remember the two of you planning to get dirty for me in here.” “We will,” Mateo promised him. “You have to get dirty with us, though.” Josiah still held Tristan’s hand. He placed his other on Teo’s abdomen. Another nod from Tristan. “I will.” And then he let go of Josiah’s hand and cupped his face. “You deserve this place. It…” He closed his eyes, let out a breath, and then opened them again. “It’s important for me to be able to do this for you. I need to do this for you.” Josiah’s heart started going wild the way only these two men could do to him. He knew Tristan felt like he let people down in his life, that he tried to make up for it the only way he could. Helping Josiah get his coffee house was another way for him to do that, and Josiah loved him for it. Turning slightly, he kissed Tristan’s hand. “No, you don’t. Having you is enough, but thank you. This means the world to me.” Tristan stepped back and glanced at the door as though someone walked in, as though someone could see them through the closed blinds. “Mateo is right. We should celebrate.” The three of them had never had much to celebrate in their lives. They were three broken men, three broken pieces, that only worked when they were together. “Yeah, Jay and I will be bustin’ our asses on this place soon. We should celebrate while we can,” Teo said. “We can grab some dinner on the way home—” “No.” Josiah interrupted Tristan’s reply. “I’ll cook.” He loved making meals for his men. “How did I know you’d say that?” Tristan smirked. “Because you’re a smart guy. Be smarter and don’t argue with him. I like his cookin’.” Teo winked, and then the three men walked out of what would be Josiah’s coffee house, and headed home. My Favorite Authors (part one)
So I was just sitting here, trying to figure out what to blog about today, and it occurred to me that I've never said much about my favorite authors -- meaning, in this case (and in others to come), those whose facility with the written word delighted, fascinated, and ennobled me, in years past.
It may sound strange to say "ennobled." in this context. None of the wonderful authors actually granted me a title or land, or anything else associated with Gentry. In this case, I'm using the alternate meaning and saying, flat out, that it is largely thanks to the fertile minds, imaginations, and written chivalry of authors that I'm less screwed up than I might have been otherwise. (My proof of this is that my sibling, who grew up in the exact same circumstances but didn't -- and still doesn't -- read, is an utter jackhole. But that's a conversation for another time. When you and I are in a bar together and I've had far too much to drink. Don't laugh. It could happen. ;) )
In any case, this post is about my favorite authors, and for this first post, I'm going to talk about Mercedes Lackey, who I had the terrifying pleasure of sitting on a panel with least year at Dragon*Con, with Kiernan Kelly, Kage Alan, and a number of others. (They'll be subjects of future FA posts. Just not this one. *grins*)
I remember the first time I saw the Heralds of Valdemar series in my local bookstore. I didn't buy it, as I was on more of a sci-fi kick at the time (I go through phases. Always have). I remember thinking the cover art was amazing, but still. It was a few years later, after the books in the Last Herald Mage series were available, that I finally decided to take the plunge. As I had been reading Gordon Merrick and several other "gay theme" authors for years and had many, many gay friends, it was the fact that this was a whole series -- a whole fantasy series! -- that convinced me to start reading Mercedes' books.
I think I tore through those three books in four days. I devoured them, gulping at the words as though they were fine wine, and myself too plebeian to savor them. I fell in love with the characters, with the setting, and Gods, did I ever fall in love with the world building! I couldn't get enough.
Two days after I finished the Last Herald Mage series, I went out and got the Heralds of Valdemar books. I tore through them almost as quickly, and in truth, I must say I became obsessed. If I'd known of fan fic back then, I guarantee you I would have been writing it for Valdemar and Herald's Collegium. Even now, when I haven't revisited that world in years, I remember so many scenes; so many lines of dialogue, and so many of the many, many secondary and tertiary characters.
One of my favorite things about the Valdemar books, as well as other of Lackey's works, is that just as there are characters that don't hold to the hetero-normative standard, there is also the frequently and bluntly stated truth that as far as religion goes, "there is no one true way."
That was very important to me at the time, and remains so today as I am, by turns, an atheist and a polytheist. I was a religious philosophy major for a while in college, actually. Mostly because growing up without any specific religious rudder -- but with the idea that I should HAVE a belief system -- I was curious about the options. The Valdemar books -- and later, other of Lackey's works -- were instrumental in helping me to find that curiosity normal. Or at least not abnormal.
Add in the fact that her characters are fully developed, often deeply flawed, and sometimes make poor decisions... and add to that the fact that she seems unable to tell a bad story, and yes. One of my favorite authors.
It doesn't hurt that she's also incredibly nice, completely down to earth, and has a wicked sense of humor.
Honestly, I may just have a bit of a girl-crush on her. *sheepish grin*
So there we have it. My first "Favorite Author" post.
(Disclaimer: I am in no way suggesting that everybody must love the same things I do. My opinions are entirely my own. Make of it what you will. :) )

Ask Andrew - Preparation Revisited
Dear Andrew
Maybe I have lead a sheltered life, but don't guys usually douche before it and is that a given, or do guys have it and just get all dirty? I was mortified twice when I was the bottom and just had crap everywhere. Is it just me being paranoid or what? I'm really curious for a 63 year old man who hasn't had anal sex in a good 10 years and really miss it. (Toys just aren't the same)
Larry
Dear Larry
First I have to begin by saying that you're right, toys just aren't the same as having a real person connected and a part of you. Sex is more than the mechanics and great sex is worlds more.
With that said, I better get down to the main portion of your question. Sex is messy and anal sex is messier for a number of reasons including the one you mention in your question. That part of things is rarely mentioned in romance novels for a number of reasons as you can imagine. Hence cleanup is important. Now there is no need to be mortified or embarrassed about a little messiness. Yes it may be unpleasant to think about, but its natural and its going to happen. What's more important is the closeness and intimacy you have with your partner.
Yes, if you would prefer to reduce the chance for extra messiness during anal sex, then douching is an option. But that required extra preparation and forethought. Spontaneity has gone way out the window by this point. My experience has been that using enough lube keeps things slippery enough that messiness is minimized to a good degree. When practicing safe sex, then ensure the condom is well lubricated, that also helps. And if things do get a little messy then make showering together a part of your time with your partner. It adds intimacy and closeness and is a great way to spend that time together when its just the two of you.
I will answer one question
a week.
Please remember this is meant to be all in fun. (I was going to say good, clean fun, but who wants that.) So send me your questions and let's see what mischief we can get into.
