Wall of White
I’m an outliner. Some people just sit down and write. Words leap from their fingers and voila! There’s a novel! I need to lay it out, just the basics, and fill in the blanks. It starts as a one line outline. Something like, “Engage near the gas giant.”
It becomes a wall of white. On one side I know what needs to happen. On the other I find unique things happening. Characters and opportunities leap out and shout. That seems to be when the most unexpected, and interesting, things happen.

Familiar Trails
Every summer I make at least one hiking trip. In some years its been to places like Isle Royale or snowshoeing on the Gunflint Trail. Other times it’s been a simpler locale, like the photo above. That’s Pictured Rocks near Munising, MI.
Good fiction is the same way. On occasion you want to read something wild, out there, completely unique. I’ve been reading stuff like Cormac McCarthy for that. Other times you just want a well worn trail that makes for a great daily walk. That has been Heinlein or Lois Mcmaster Bujold lately.
I like to write on the more common side for now while I find my voice. Though I strive to get shades of McCarthy.
