Gabrielle’s best-selling series are driven by her belief that everyone has a happy ending waiting to happen, even if it’s found in a seemingly unconventional way. When she’s not busy writing her next anxiously awaited book, she’s living her own happily ever after, married to her high school sweetheart. For now, she parks her car in central Indiana, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.
HAVEN 8: FOUR-LETTER WORDSCOMING MAY 16th FROM SIREN-BOOKSTRAND!

While his mate may not remember their previous life together, Thane Braddock has no trouble recalling every moment, right up to their tragic end. Now, he has a second chance to make everything right. Unfortunately, he’s making all new mistakes this time around.
Evil lurks to the west, spreading its shadow across the desert, and the races hover on the verge of war. When the Braddocks are called to answer the rising threat, Thane and Zasha’s turbulent relationship will be pushed to its breaking point. Can they rekindle the old flame before it’s too late? Or is history destined to repeat itself?
WHAT IS LOVE?
“He cared very much for Thane, but he didn’t know that it was love. Hell, love was such an abstract concept. There was no tangible proof that it existed. He couldn’t see it, touch it, taste it, or hold it in his hand, and he was skeptical about this very human convention.
Zasha wasn’t convinced two people needed to love each other to be happy together. Fate threw them onto the same path because they were the best possible match, and from there, well, they just had to find a way to make it work.
There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for Thane, and the thought of losing him pierced his heart like a jagged, rusty dagger. He’d heard humans speak of many types of love—unconditional love, a mother’s love, true love, eternal love, and the ever-popular love at first sight. Sometimes, he envied them and their ability to find joy based purely on faith.
Of course, he’d heard paranormals speak about love as well, but mostly, he felt they were just confused. Their compatibility with their mates, a healthy dose of pheromones, and some animalistic instincts did not necessarily equal love in Zasha’s opinion.”
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines love as:
(1) strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child>(2) : attraction based on sexual desire : affection and tenderness felt by lovers(3) : affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests <love for his old schoolmates>
When I began writing Four-Letter Words, I encountered something that had never happened to me before. I suddenly found myself with a character who fully and unashamedly refused the ideals of love. Once I stopped to research the definition, I began to understand why.
Now, of course, we love our family members. The real question is why. A better question might be how. When did we form this type of affection for our mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers? Are we born with love coded into our DNA? I’m pretty sure scientist would have discovered that chromosome by now if that were the case. We live together under the same roof with our immediate family for eighteen years, give or take. Is what we mistake for love really just a sense of comfort, safety, and familiarity? I believe not, but again, what is love?
“That wasn’t even the point he was trying to make, though. “Thane, I don’t believe in all this fairy tale, happily-ever-after, true-love-will-find-a-way stuff.” Sighing under his breath, he reached out and cupped Thane’s cheek. “I’m not trying to hurt you, but if you’re waiting for me to fall in love, I’m sorry. It’s not going to happen.”
Thane didn’t appear offended or even upset. In fact, he was smiling from ear to ear. “Why do you want to go with me to hunt the witches?”
“Caring about your happiness, safety, and general well-being does not equate to love.”
If that was really the extent of it, then doctors would be in love with their patients. It was like darkness. People talked about the dark as though it was a physical thing, when in actuality, it was as abstract as any emotion. There was no way to measure the darkness, only the absence of light. There was no way to measure love, either, yet people tried daily to quantify it.”
We can’t measure love. There is no way to quantify or even qualify it. In the second definition, we see that love is compared to affection brought on my sexual attraction, but isn’t that simply lust? Then there is affection based on admiration. However, it stands to reason that it is not love, but simply…admiration.
So, if we can’t measure love, can’t hold it in our hands, taste it on our tongues, or see it wrapped around us like filmy haze, how do we know that it even exists? The very simple answer is faith, the belief in something without tangible proof. More importantly, we feel it. We know the difference between lust, admiration, infatuation, friendship, understanding, sympathy, and love because of this little thing called the human condition.
Love is the most powerful emotion we can feel, even greater than grief or fear. It is the emotion that propels a mother forward into oncoming traffic, sacrificing herself to protect her child. It is love not grief that drives a man to his knees at the death of his wife.
In the end, no matter how we think we feel about the subject, love will always find a way.
“Love is everywhere,” Zasha whispered. “It’s so intricately woven into the very fabric of time that there is no hope of escaping it. I thought love couldn’t be seen, but I see it every time you smile. They say you can’t taste love, yet it still lingers on my tongue.” He paused, pushing up on his elbows to lick at Thane’s lips. “I thought if I couldn’t touch love, it couldn’t be real.” He pressed his hand to Thane’s cheek and caressed the skin with his thumb. “Yet here I am, holding love in the palm of my hand.”
Love endures. Love never fails.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Q: Thinking back on your first book, is there anything you would have done differently?I don’t think I would have changed anything. I hope since writing Leap of Faith, my writing abilities and storytelling skills have improved, but as far as the core of the story, I don’t know what I would have done differently.
Q: Has your perspective on the writing process changed since you became published?Until I was a published author, I don’t think I truly realized how much went into the process. Sure, I knew I had to write the book, and then there would be edits, blurbs, and filling out cover requests. There’s so much more, though. I have a website to maintain. There’s my blog. I try to keep readers updated via Facebook and Twitter. I host contests and guest bloggers. I guest blog with other authors. Last year I attended three conferences, and let me just say that the lead up to those is a job in itself. On an average day, I work approximately fourteen to sixteen hours. Maybe about 20% of that time is spent actually writing.
Q: Do you work best on a deadline, or do you need freedom from time constraints?I need deadlines, even self-imposed deadlines. Working from home, it’s very easy to become distracted and push things off. Then the next thing I know, it’s been days since I’ve written anything. So, yes, deadlines are a must.
Q: Is there a word or phrase you catch yourself overusing?Yes, but it varies by book. Sometimes, they’re everyday words like “either.” When I was working on the fifth Gods of Chaos, it was “cowboy.” Then there are other times when the repetition is done purposely because it comes as dialogue and fits with my character’s personality.
Q: How do you know you’ve written a good book?I have no ego to speak of, but I’m also not the type to think that everything I write sucks. Honestly, though, I don’t have a good answer. “Good” and “bad” are so subjective, so while I’m thinking this is the most awesome thing I’ve ever written, there is a good chance readers will think it’s crap.
So, there you have it. I don’t know if I’ve written a good book until my readers tell me. With that said, I will thinkI’ve written a good book if I can re-read the story during edits and laugh, cry, and want to strangle my heroes as a reader instead of the creator.
Q: How do you keep your characters and stories organized?I have about a million character charts. One for each book, and then an all-encompassing chart for every series. There are currently 25 sticky notes on my desktop, a dozen or so post-it notes pasted to the wall over my desk, and six whiteboards hung in various places around the house. It drives my husband crazy. Heehee!
Q: Are you a Swooper (write first, edit later,) a Basher (edit each sentence as you go,) or both?I’m a Swooper. As horrible as it sounds, 9 times out of 10, I won’t self-edit before submitting my manuscript. Thankfully, my editor is pretty understanding about this, because the truth is, I suck at self-editing, especially when the story is so fresh in my mind. If I put it aside and wait until I receive content edits from my publisher, I can more easily see my mistakes. While I’m writing the story, though, I know what it’s supposed to say, and I have a tendency to read it that way, even if that’s not exactly what went down in the manuscript.
Q: What is the one thing you must have to be able to write?Quiet and my computer. Now, the last one sounds like a no-brainer, right? My computer is more than just a tool I use to get my words down on “paper,” though. I can brainstorm ideas with another person. Inspiration can hit me at any moment, and I’ll have an idea for a story spin out in my mind within minutes. Nothing—not setting, world building, or characters—ever come fully developed, though.
When I get stuck and I’m not sure how to move the story forward, I can’t take a walk or a shower. I can’t settle down on the sofa and think through my problem. Every time I try, I end up thinking about a dozen other things that have nothing to do with writing. Did I remember to wash my son’s soccer uniform? What am I going to make for dinner? I should probably clean out the bird cage this weekend. Crap, I need to go to the post office. On and on it goes, but it’s never about my story. I have to be sitting in front of my computer with my fingers on the keyboard before the ideas will flow.
Q: Did you have any bad habits when you began writing? How did you correct those habits?I fully admit that I had an addiction to adverbs when I first began writing. I also had a tendency to overuse endearments. Rhetorical questions were another big, bad habit of mine. It still takes a conscious effort to refrain from using endearments every other paragraph, and it probably always will. The adverbs and rhetorical questions were a little easier to redirect. When I catch myself about to use “quietly,” I stop and decide if there is another way I can describe what’s happening without using that adverb. When I type a rhetorical question in narrative, such as, “Am I really that big of a dick?” I immediately smack myself in the forehead and yell at my character. “Why the hell are you asking the reader? They don’t know!” And then I proceed to change around the wording and sentence structure to convey the same message.
Q: When and where can readers look forward to seeing you this year?I’ve decided to take the year off from conferences and book signings this year. With ten unfinished series, eight new series planned, and a couple of joint projects in the works, I really just want to focus on my writing for now. I do have a few different things planned for 2014, though. J
Q: Do you prefer to write 1st or 3rd Person POV? Why?For me, I prefer 3rd person. I don’t need to know what every single character is thinking, but I do like to have at least two sides of the story. As a reader, I enjoy either, but as a writer, I feel more in tune with my characters when I can get into both of their heads. I fully admit there are things I don’t write as well, and 1st person would be one of those things. I need to know my characters, and I don’t feel like I can really understand them without seeing the world through their eyes.
Q: What do you feel are the most important aspects to a good romance?Trust and physical chemistry. Those are the two driving forces behind any romance. The story starts with a physical attraction that gradually blossoms into something more than, “Wow, you’re hot. Let’s bone.” The romance has no hope of progressing into affection or love without trust, though.I think one of my characters actually said it best.
“If I can’t trust you with something as simple as keeping your dick in your pants, why in sweet fuck would I give you my heart?” –Detective Chris Sine, Salem Nights 2: Lifeline
Q: Are you always in the driver’s seat? Or do your characters drag you along for the ride?I never have control. Never. I want my characters to go one way, and they will be bound and determined to go in the opposite direction. I want them to have a sweet, tender moment, and they decide it would be a good time to engage in the battle royal of arguments. I am constantly frustrated with them, but at the same time, at least it never gets boring. Most of the time, I’m just as surprised by what comes out of their mouths as readers are.
Q: What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?I’m working on a fairly big project that I should have finished this summer, with a release date planned for October. I had hoped to finish it before spring, but well, life happened. It’s darker, grittier, and a little more grab-you-by-the-throat than my other series. It pushes the envelope, but at the end of the day, I think that’s what will make it stand out from the rest.
And just because I’m nice, I’ll give you a little teaser blurb. *wink*
“Born the seventh son of all male siblings, London Montgomery’s very existence could bring about the end of the world. The Devourer is coming. An evil as old as time, hungry for revenge against the warriors who entombed him, the Devourer needs only a piece of London’s soul to bring about the destruction of life as we know it.
When all but one Guardian mysteriously disappear, only London can find the six warriors lost to time and awaken the sleeping heroes. In a world ravished by plague, famine, war, and evil, these heroes will need more than courage to vanquish their enemy.
Victory will require an act of Uncommon Valor.”

ENSLAVED BY AN OFFICER [SOLD!]
His life would never be the same…
Honor Vengeance took on the task of hunting down the

Carver Tam is on the verge of playing pro football when he’s abducted and sold. Furious that he’s lost everything he’s worked so hard for, he’s not about to surrender to his new master. When he ends up on a world where slaves are worked to death, he has no choice but to lead a rebellion. The last thing he was ever expecting was to be forcibly rescued by an eight-foot-tall, maroon-colored alien officer named Honor Vengeance.
Their attraction is instant and irresistible, but causes devastating consequences. Will their relationship be the last straw that forces the Krase government to cease their mission to rescue the illegally enslaved Earthlings?
STORY EXCERPTAs he got closer to the Krase warrior, Carver couldn’t help but notice how cut his abs were. Whoever he was, he barely had any body fat at all, judging by his belly. And his arms were so big Carver wouldn’t be able to wrap both his hands around them, though he would certainly like to try. Carver was able to get a much better look at him when the wind caught the flowing cut of his cape and blew the beige fabric out behind his body.
Fuck.
That was the only thought that kept repeating in Carver’s head. The Krase warrior was built like a god. With each step closer, Carver wondered if he worked out to look like that or if he came by the ripped physique naturally. Either way, Carver would love to touch him. Just once. Well, maybe twice. There was something so appealing about him, but Carver couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was.
And then he got close enough to see his eyes were red. Not a bloodshot red, but a rich ruby red that had to be normal for his kind. Again, Carver was mesmerized but didn’t quite understand why. He thought of Mac and how he’d looked at him pretty much every day for a year and never felt this kind of pull until that day he’d gotten the good news about the Broncos. Maybe all he was feeling was attraction toward another creature who had a devastating body that looked remarkably human. He was bigger, this Krase warrior, but he was still amazingly human in shape.
“I am Honor Vengeance.”
Carver couldn’t help his automatic response. “Really?”
“That is my name, yes.” Honor removed the lower part of the veil that covered his mouth, revealing very human-looking lips. Carver wondered if his kind kissed and if so what it would feel and taste like to lock lips with this guy. “Are you Carver Tam?”
Carver nodded and slowly removed the lower half of his veil. He wasn’t sure why, but he felt like what they were doing was somehow sexual. Almost as if they were slowly showing themselves to the other in a dance of seduction. Idly, Carver wondered if he removed his pants would Honor follow suit? But then he remembered all he was wearing was the white cloth twisted into something like a loincloth. He was far more exposed than Honor, but he doubted he’d convince the guy to whip out his wang so they could compare.
“I’m here to take you back to Krase.”“Why?”
There was a brief but noticeable pause in Honor’s answer. “You were illegally sold into slavery.”
Carver felt a wave of relief go through him. Everything he’d left behind he could get back. Mac, the job offer—all of it. He was so grateful he would have cried, but he was simply too dehydrated. “I’m going home?”
Again, another pause, this one much longer. Honor looked down at the ground then up, but he didn’t quite meet Carver’s eyes. “I’m sorry. You simply can’t return to Earth.”
Carver felt as if he’d just suffered repeated blows of the lash. He ached somewhere inside that could never be healed. “I have to go back. I have—you don’t understand what’s waiting for me there.”
Something about Honor’s features seemed to soften. “You have a love there?”
The way he said it gave Carver some hope. Perhaps if Honor thought he was in love he would help him get home. Mac had been the best roommate a guy could want, and after that brief but mind-blowing interlude, Carver was pretty damn sure they were well on the road to something. Maybe not love but maybe so. It was difficult to say after one wickedly hot encounter.
“While I’m sympathetic, there is nothing I can do.” Honor looked over Carver’s shoulder. “I will explain, but not here. Will you come with me?”
Carver shook his head. “I’m not leaving them.”Honor nodded resolutely, and then a tiny grin lifted up one edge of his mouth. “What if I offered to free them as well as you?”
“You’d do that?”
“I would.”
Carver had never been one to listen to advice. Rather than following the notion of never looking a gift horse in the mouth, he was immediately suspicious, and asked, “Why?”

SATISFYING THEIR RACY DESIRES [RACY NIGHTS 4]

Dustin Alexander’s ex-wife used their BDSM play as an excuse to cheat on him. But Annalise is every fantasy he’s ever had, and he falls hard for her. But will his ex-wife’s return to town ruin his chance at happiness?
Chad Bristol hides behind his tragic childhood and uses his busy career as a Racy Detective as an excuse for not dating. Annalise rocks his world, but can she calm his fears and help him learn to love?
Adult Excerpt
Dozens of doubts flitted through her mind, but when Chad pulled her into his arms and tenderly kissed her cheek, Annalise forgot about them as desire swept through her. She snuggled against his muscled body and closed her eyes, trying to fight against the waves of uncertainly coursing through her. This could easily end in disaster, but it could also be the most erotic night of her entire life.
She pulled out of Chad’s embrace and sat on the edge of the sofa. “We need to talk about this. How is this supposed to work? What happens if I’m with only one of you? Are we talking about taking turns, or it is your intention that all three of us have sex together?”
She almost laughed at the looks on their faces. They were a cross between surprise and confusion. “That’s not what I meant. I know you two aren’t sexually involved with each other. What I mean is, are you saying you want to share me, as in at the same time? And would I still have time with each of you separately if we did that?”
“Well,” said Chad finally, “I can’t speak for Dustin, but I wouldn’t have a problem sharing you with him at the same time.”
Dustin sighed. “I won’t protest that either. But I think the ultimate decision on whether we share you in bed at the same time is up to you, Annalise. Not us.”
“Oh…” She’d never considered something like that before tonight. She had no issues with it, but the situation had simply never presented itself, and so she hadn’t had to deal with it. Did she want that? Yes, she did. But she also wanted her separate time with each man.
“You certainly don’t have to make a decision tonight,” said Dustin. He stood. “In fact, I’ve intruded on your evening with Chad long enough, so I think I’ll just—”
“Don’t go.” Chad cut him off. “I wouldn’t feel right about it. Not after everything we’ve just said to each other.” He cut his gaze to Annalise. “As long as it’s all right with Annalise, I’d like you to stay.”
Annalise bit her lip to hold back the moan. The testosterone level in the room must have risen to ridiculous levels because suddenly her nipples tingled and her clit throbbed. She had no idea what she’d done to deserve these two sexier-than-life men who both wanted her, but she was tired of questioning it. It was obvious they were all right with sharing her in bed. So, why not?
“It’s your decision, Annalise.” Dustin’s voice was calm, but the raging lust in his eyes and the way his jaw muscle twitched gave him away. She’d leave the question of separate time with each man for another day.
Annalise stood up and took off her robe, holding Dustin’s gaze. As it fluttered to the floor, she heard Chad swear under his breath. Without looking at him, she turned and walked toward her bedroom. Her heart was beating so fast she was afraid she’d pass out before she actually reached her bed. Some seduction scene that would turn out to be. She could almost picture herself being carted away in an ambulance with both men racing down the street after it, fighting over who got to see her first in the ER. The scandal would be all over town before noon tomorrow.
She didn’t even make it into the room before strong arms encircled her from behind, and she breathed in Chad’s clean musky scent. “Are you sure about this, sweetheart?” he whispered, nuzzling her neck. His erection pressed against her bare ass, and even through his boxers it forced a moan from her throat.
“Yes,” she said, leaning into his embrace. “Absolutely certain.”
Chad picked her up and dumped her unceremoniously onto the bed as Annalise giggled. He tore off his boxers and covered her body, kissing her roughly. She wrapped her arms and legs around him and watched over his shoulder as Dustin shed his clothes in what had to be record time. His cock sprang out, thick, red, and ready. Annalise moaned into Chad’s open mouth and reached out for Dustin with one hand.
Dustin moved next to her and Chad on the bed and stroked her hair, gazing into her eyes with the most intense lust she’d ever seen. Chad moved from her mouth to her nipples, grazing his teeth over one then the other.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Q: If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would it be and why?Kari Tye and Alexa Monahan, the heroines from Winning Her Racy Heart (Kari) and Claiming Their Racy Sub (Alexa). They own and operate Racy’s only sex shop, and they’re simply cool, kick-ass heroines who would be a blast to hang out with.
Q: What do you feel is the hardest part of the writing process?Having time to write!
Q: How do you keep your characters and stories organized?I have a master Word doc with everything about the series, from which businesses are on what streets to who used to live where, and with whom. Then I have a Word doc for each book in the series that goes into detail about the heroine and each hero, and lists the characters introduced in that particular book. This document also contains the timeline for that particular book.
Q: What is the one thing you must have to be able to write? My music. I can write in absolute silence as well, but usually do better with my playlists in the background.
Q: What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?I’m working on the books for the Seduction Ridge series. They, too, will be MFM ménage, contemporary, BDSM, but Seduction Ridge has a different feel to it than Racy.
Q:What advice would you give an aspiring author about the ins and outs of the industry?Learn your craft, respect those who have been there and done that already and learn from them, and never be afraid to ask questions. It shows you care about this industry and about making your writing be the best it can be. Promo does not mean you spam others, and it does not mean you jump on someone else’s Facebook post or tweet to pitch your own work. The best thing you can do to attract the attention of readers is to write a great book, and then keep writing them.
Q: When is your favorite time of day to write?Early morning when I’m fresh and awake, but because I work a full time job I have to sneak in writing when I can.
Q: When and where can readers look forward to seeing you this year? The Seduction Ridge series as well as the Racy Nights series will continue, and I plan to start a third series as well.

READER INTERVIEWS ROUND 4

WELCOME READER BEVERLY!
Do you read the sex scenes first before reading the book? No. I like a bit of foreplay before the main event.
In your opinion, what are the most important elements in a good romance?Elements for a good romance include a solid connection, a getting to know you phase and for me a HEA.
How soon is too soon to say, "I love you"? Depends on the situation. It would take me a while to say I love you and mean it. It's not something thatcomes easy for me.
Do you believe in love at first sight? I have no reason to believe in love at first sight unless it's a really cool vintage purse.
Should a romance be mostly about the relationship, or should there be an even mixture of romance and action? Action and romance is fine. I like some conflict and adventure, it's all good.
What is something that will send you screaming out of a book? Flashbacks send me screaming loudly. I detest them.
How much is too much when it comes to BDSM? BDSM stories where the submissive is too much of a pet/slave. An extreme amount of blood play is a turn off.
What's the difference between a "bad" review and a "negative" review? A bad review is a honest critique with informative reasons why the book failed. A negative review is frequently harsh without valid reasons and often times aimed at the author instead of the written word.
Do you think authors overreact to harsh criticism? Some authors do overact to bad reviews. There's oneauthor that comes to mind who whines and moans constantly and it's become tiresome. If you take the good you have to take the bad too.
What is your favorite sex position? I don't have a favorite sex position although I prefer to bottom,so to speak.:) I'm versatile.
Is two better than one? Better,no. Fun,it can be.
How many is too many in a relationship? In a relationship two is hard enough. Three or more I just can't imagine in real time.
Do you prefer internal (relationship) or external (fighting the bad guy) conflict? No preference
Is there anything you won’t read? I avoid dubious consent/rape stories and I don't care for" hairy daddy bear" ones. Amnesiacs and twins who trade places bother me.
Do you like long series? Or do you think more than six books is too much? I like long series if they are written well and keep me engaged,
How many chances will you give a new-to-you author before you stop reading his/her books? If the first book is crap it's hard for me to give it a second chance. If I do it better be good or I'm not wasting my time or money.
What is your opinion on capture fantasy? Capture Fantasy, not my thing.
Do you have a favorite type of M/M pairing? (two alphas, Dominant/submissive, alpha male with a smaller mate, etc.) Alpha male with a smaller male I like. Two alphas are good too especially if both are in law enforcement.
What is your favorite sex toy? Costumes are my favorite sex toy.
Is there anything you feel is being overdone right now? Gay for You theme has pretty much run its course. Everyone is doing BDSM and it should be a written rule that only the experienced should apply. There are a few authors who understand the scene and get it right. It's not something to dabble in to sell books.
Is there anything you wish more authors wrote? I would love more sexy rock star love, fairies and angels would be nice too.
How long do you like your books? I'm good with a longer book but I get itchy scratchy when it's over 300 pages in e-book format. I prefer to read longer books in paper form.
What is the one thing in a sex scene that will always get your motor running? I like it when they go at it hard against a wall and then someone drops to the knees and takes care of things.
Does an author’s personal attitude affect if you will read his/her books?Definitely, I've stopped buying a couple of authors books for that exact reason.
Is there anything else you want to say to authors? Keep doing what you're doing because you are my rock stars. There's almost nothing better than a good book.
And that's a wrap! Thanks to all the readers who took the time to answers these questions.
Here's one more for the road: Sex outside of the main relationship. What do you think as a reader?
Scenario 1: Bob and Dylan (you like that right?) break up on their one year anniversary. Three months later, Dylan meets Matt. They have a one night stand. Three months after that, Bob and Dylan get back together. Ya or Nay? Should Dylan just keep it in his pants until he is back with Bob where he belongs?
Scenario 2: Nick hooks up with a guy at the bar. Typical club hookup, not going beyond a good, hard *cough* "handshake" in the alley. Two days later, Nick meets Cage. They fall madly in love and live happily-ever-after.Ya or Nay? Does it lose something if either character is having sex outside of the relationship? Even if it's not actually cheating?

When Sawyer is finally willing to give Jake a chance, a ghost from the past returns to destroy everything they have built together. Will they be able to overcome the foe long thought gone, or will it be the end for the Kayan’s Mage?
STORY EXCERPT
“Com’ere, blondie,” the middle man slurred, his body swaying as he spoke. Sawyer could smell the pungent scent of stale alcohol from where he stood and shivered in revulsion when the man’s eyes raked over him. Worse still was when the man cupped his crotch and licked his lips like they were some sort of delicious meal he couldn’t wait to dig into. God, he was going to be sick.Riley reached over and gripped Sawyer’s hand tight. He could feel the tremors running through his brother’s body, but he was hiding it well. While they may have had a slight advantage since neither he nor his brother was human, these men were big and outnumbered them. And if Elijah knew what Sawyer and Riley were, he also knew how old they were and that they wouldn’t have their abilities yet. Prime pickings.“Seems they think they’re too good for us, Bear,” the one to Bear’s left chuckled. He took a step forward, and Sawyer couldn’t contain the whimper of fear that passed his lips even as he stepped sideways to place himself in front of his twin.“Well now, Tiger, we’ll just have to change their minds. Won’t we, blondie?” sneered Bear.Really, Tiger and Bear! Who were these guys, the rejects from an L. Frank Baum novel? Sawyer was just waiting for the guy on the right to pipe up and announce to the class that his name was Lion. If they were shifters, maybe he’d get it.Wait, scrap that. Not even shifters would be that corny. From behind him, he heard Riley mutter, “Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my.”A snigger slipped past Sawyer’s lips, clearly indicating that his self-preservation wasn’t kicking in. Both of them had always found the most inappropriate things amusing when they were scared, and unfortunately for them, Bear didn’t seem to appreciate their particular brand of humour. No one ever did.A fist collided with the side of his head, blindsiding him and knocking him to the ground. From where he fell, Sawyer shoved at Riley, moaning for him to run. Somewhere to his left he heard Riley scream his name, but there was nothing he could do but draw their attention, giving his brother a chance to escape as another hard kick landed in his stomach. That was going to leave a mark. Managing to regain his footing, Sawyer blocked the next hit, following it up with a right hook of his own. His fist collided with the man’s temple and the guy went down with a grunt. All those years they had spent on the street were paying off, and by the look on Elijah’s face, he hadn’t been prepared for that. A small sliver of satisfaction ran through Sawyer. The arsehole hadn’t expected on him fighting back, which meant he didn’t know Sawyer as well as he thought he did.“That’s right, bitch. This twink fights back,” he spat out.Focusing on the next guy, Sawyer was able to take down two more before becoming overwhelmed. He just couldn’t keep up, taking more hits than he could dish out. Blow after blow struck him until he was unable to fight back, dropping to the ground. He could feel the blood from one of the wounds on his heads dripping down, and he knew there were more where that came from. It was hard to kill one of his kind, but blood loss was a definite possibility at this point, and all he could do was lay there and take whatever they threw at him. His body was like one big lightning bolt of pain, but he refused to beg them to stop. Just when he thought he couldn’t take any more, the blows ceased. But before Sawyer had a chance to feel relief, the hands returned, this time touching and blindly groping, trying to tear at his clothes.Oh, God. No.Bile rose into his throat as he felt his shirt rip and another set of hands go for the zipper of his jeans, tearing at the button. He tried to buck the hands off, but with as battered as he was, all it did was excite them more. Elijah’s hand came down and clamped Sawyer’s jaw tightly with a strength that surprised him, keeping his head locked in one place. Staring into the eyes of a man he once called friend, for a moment Sawyer could have sworn he saw a flicker of pain and sadness cross the man’s face, but it was gone just as quickly to be replaced with the emotionless expression he had worn all night. Tears mixed with the blood running down Sawyer’s cheeks as he acknowledged what was coming and that there was no way he could stop it. He sent up a silent prayer that Riley had gotten away, and that he would never see this.Suddenly a feral growl ripped through the lot from behind the men that held him down, taking them all by surprise. Then everything stopped.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Q: If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would it be and why?If I had to choose one, it would have to be Riley. He’s sassy, sarcastic, fun and full of useless information that could keep me entertained for hours. He wants to have fun and be ‘out-there’ and isn’t afraid of that. He’d be someone I could see myself having a hell of a time with. Riley is one character that I really enjoy writing for and including in scenes.
Q: Are you plot or character driven? Please elaborate.Character, but not for the lack of trying. I try to follow a plot…I really do, but it never works out that way. When I start I always write a plot outline, so I know which direction I’m going in and where I want to end up. Never sticks. My boys end up going off on their own little tangent and making their own stuff up as they go along. I usually stop to look back at the plot outline and think “How the hell did they end up in that situation?”
Q: What is the one thing you must have to be able to write? As cliché as it sounds…coffee. I’m addicted anyway, but when I’m writing it’s like a necessity and my hubby knows to just keep it coming. He doesn’t even have to ask. Half the time I glance down and find I have one waiting for me.
Q: Have you ever gotten writer’s block? How do you get past it?I read, and if that doesn’t help then I write out a new story plot. The amount of WIP that I have just sitting on my laptop is ridiculous, and half of them may never get written, but it works.
Q: Can you offer advice on how to move on from the dreaded rejection letter? With any rejection letter there is usually a list of reasons why. The biggest issue I had was trying not to take it personally. While the story is personal for you the other person is usually just trying to help and point out what doesn’t or won’t work. I take what they say and I work with it on my own terms.
Q: When is your favorite time of day to write?Night. When the kids are in bed and everything is done. I work best when there are no distractions. If something is happening or someone is talking, then I’m done for. I do try during the day, but my best stuff is usually at night when I can just let it flow.

OUT OF THE SHADOWSCOMING JUNE 10, 2013

Caleb isn't oblivious to Joshua's interest, but something isn't right. Joshua is distracted, and every time he looks at his phone, Caleb fears his new assistant might pass out right where he stands. He's trying not to push, but every instinct tells him Joshua needs his help. Now, if he can just convince the fiercely independent blond of this, things would be just fine.
Kicking his lover out on the street wasn't the road to freedom Joshua had expected it to be. The Enforcer won't take no for an answer, and he'll go to any lengths to get Joshua back into his bed, no matter how violent. Can Caleb convince Joshua to accept his help before it's too late? Or will Joshua's desire to stand on his own two feet cost him everything in the end?
EXCERPT
Josh was busy getting the boardroom ready for everyone. Making sure all the copies were done and everyone had what they needed, he was bustling about the room when his cell phone went off. He ignored the vibrating phone and kept working. He had to make sure this meeting went smoothly, and Caleb Reese knew that Josh could be trusted to do his job. He set up his usual place off to the side to take notes as people started filtering into the room. He couldn’t seem to stop thinking of his boss. What did he like to do outside of work? What were his interests?Josh tried not to stare as Caleb entered through the door, but the power that rolled off the man seemed to fill the room and command all the attention. He talked to everyone, politely introducing himself. He was listening to what they all had to say. The only frustrating thing was Caleb seemed to be ignoring him. Caleb never glanced at him not once during the hour meeting. He stayed focused and in control of the room, though. Josh had to concentrate more than usual to make sure he got his notes right. The man was just too sexy for his own good. Working for him was going to be a challenge. Challenges were things he embraced Josh never met one he didn’t take. The only thing troubling him was the fact his cell phone had vibrated ten times during the meeting.“Joshua, I’ll need these notes within the hour.” Caleb started gathering his papers up to leave the room.“Yes, sir,” Josh gathered up his stuff and was getting ready to leave the room as well. He felt eyes on his ass as he left. He didn’t dare look back to see if Caleb was actually staring at his ass or not, but it sure felt like he was. He put an extra shake into his hips just in case. Hey, a man could dream right? The rest of the day was a dull blur of number crunching and filing for Josh. The highlight of the day was finding as many opportunities as possible to see Caleb. As Josh got ready to leave he was still thinking of his sinfully hot boss wondering what he had under that conservative Armani suit. Maybe he wore silk boxers. Ooh, blue silk would look so damn good on him. Maybe he could convince Caleb to wear them while he was tied to his bed. That image caused him to get so hard; he thought he would come right there at the office. He wanted Caleb to tie him down and dominate him. His wrists tingled at the thought, and his cock was hard and throbbing. Josh was struggling to think of anything other than how much he wanted to jump his boss right then. “Time to go home, Joshua. I do not expect you to live at the office,” Caleb said, coming over to his desk and jostling him out of his sexy daydream in a rush.Blushing, Josh tried to cover it by typing faster.“I have one more sentence, and then I can save and leave, sir. I just want to be sure this gets off to Mr. Abriel today. I know we’re on a deadline with it, sir.” Josh hit send on the computer and started powering down. He noticed out of the corner of his eye that Caleb wasn’t moving. He was still standing there waiting patiently. He tried to ignore his presence in hopes his cock would go down before he stood up.“Did you need something, sir?” Josh asked while he gathered his things, trying not to look at Caleb and concentrating on anything but the powerful man standing next to him. The pull he felt to go to him and present himself at his feet almost overwhelmed him.He wasn’t used to someone staring at him for so long, and it was making him feel like his clothes were on wrong or something. He made sure his jacket was draped over his arm in front of him as he stood up. It might not be subtle, but he didn’t have to advertise he was hard for his boss. After all, today was the first day. He didn’t want to lose this job. He needed it.“Waiting for you to finish up. We can go to the parking garage together, give us a chance to talk some, get to know each other a little better.” Caleb steered him toward the elevators. His hand brushed Josh’s hair, gently musing it. Then he seemed to ghost a hand down his back ever so lightly, causing tiny shivers in him. Josh could have sworn he felt a hand on his ass. He didn’t say anything, though. He didn’t want it to stop, and he didn’t want to be wrong. He really wouldn’t know how to ask his boss if he was feeling him up. Since Josh wasn’t feeling harassed but rather intrigued, he decided to say nothing and let the chips fall where they may. Besides, confrontation had never been his strong point, anyway.Josh smiled to himself, thinking he was going to have a hard time not imagining his boss as more, because everything inside him said Caleb was the one for him. He just knew deep down in his soul they were meant to be together.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Q: Thinking back on your first book, is there anything you would have done differently? This is my first self-published book. The others I have written were shorter stories. I am glad to have the opportunity to really expand some of those ideas into full-fledged stories that I love.
Q: Do you work best on a deadline, or do you need freedom from time constraints? If I did not give myself deadlines, nothing would get done. I give myself personal goals to meet. And dedicate time for the writing when the family is not around to distract me.
Q: Is there a word or phrase you catch yourself overusing?I giggle as I am reading this because I know my editor and first reader would have a much better answer. I am going to go with “that”… or he said she said and so on.
Q: How do you know you’ve written a good book?It does not feel like writing. It is more like just having fun. Then I know I did good. 'Cause writing should be fun.
Q: How do you keep your characters and stories organized?Umm, they have to be organized oops … they just flow from my head they know what they are doing.
Q: What is the one thing you must have to be able to write?A computer, and my water. Then I am off and going.
Q: What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?I am working on two paranormals right now. Both have different elements to them that are firsts for me. It is much different than Josh’s story since they are not just contemporary stories. I have werewolves, and vampires coming up.

FROM THE ASHES [FIRE AND RAIN]AMAZON PRE-ORDER | B&N PRE-ORDER
He wanted a boyfriend. What he got was a hero.

Lucky for him, a sexy fireman offers him a place to stay. The drawback? The fireman’s big Latino family lives next door, and they don’t know their son is gay.
Tomas’s parents made their way in America with hard work and by accepting help when it was offered, so he won’t let Jesse drop out of school just so he can afford a place to live. Besides, Jesse’s the perfect roommate—funny, sweet and breathtakingly cute. He climbs into Tomas’s bed and tugs at his heart. Until Jesse starts pushing for more.
Their passion enflames their bodies but threatens to crush Tomas’s family. Tomas is willing to fight for Jesse, but after losing everything, Jesse isn’t sure he can bear to risk his one remaining possession—his heart.
EXCERPT
“I’m…” The words I’m sorry hung on Tomas’s lips, but he wasn’t sure what he was sorry for. He hated that he’d hurt Jesse, and hated even more how the idea of Jesse not being able to sit down turned him on.
“Let’s not talk about it.” Jesse picked up his plate and started eating. Focused on the screen, he kept a foot of space between their legs.
Tomas ate a couple of potato chips. The salt scalded his tongue, and he got up to grab a soda out of the refrigerator. Though he wanted to say something as he walked away, he didn’t know what.
He only had beer and milk, and Tomas frowned, thinking they needed to get to the store over the weekend. “You want a beer?” he asked Jesse.
Things were normal, but completely different. Tomas wished they could go back to how things were—when Jesse and he hung out like friends. But he wouldn’t have given up what they’d just done together for anything. It had been…he didn’t know. Wonderful and scary? Tomas only knew he wouldn’t take it back.
“Sure.” Jesse squinted at the screen. “What movie is this?”Tomas came into the living room and handed Jesse a beer over the back of the couch. “Rambo: First Blood.”
Jesse nodded. He snuck a look at Tomas out of the corner of his eye. He didn’t seem angry, more nervous.
Fuck. What kind of man was Tomas to screw a guy and then not even say thank you or that was awesome?
Apparently an asshole, because he couldn’t bring himself to say it.
“Stallone’s pumped, but I can’t really see why anyone ever thought he was hot.” Jesse ate his burger and drank his beer. He put his feet up on the coffee table. His attitude seemed a little too relaxed. Like he was trying to breeze right past the fact they’d had sex.
Tomas didn’t mind. He was grateful. “My brother’s got all his movies.”
He looked to the entertainment center—the entire shelf devoted to Rambo and Rocky. Maybe Diego had been trying to toughen Tomas up by leaving the videos in the garage house. Diego hadn’t lived there since he and his wife moved out.
“I like the fighting, but I never thought he was good-looking.” Tomas drank a sip of his beer. He took his first bite of hamburger. It tasted better than he expected. The onion and garlic salt really did work wonders.
Jesse had insisted they buy shakers of the stuff at Target.Whatever the fuck else happened between them, Tomas didn’t want to lose Jesse as a friend. Hell, as a roommate or life partner. Or whatever the heck you were supposed to call a guy who was to him what Jesse was.
“I dunno. Michael mentioned him once.” Jesse chuckled.
“Why’s that funny?”
“Oh, because Michael’s always on a high horse about political stuff.” Jesse kept his eyes on the screen. He was blushing, so Tomas made sure not to watch him too hard. “But he’s totally turned on by pumped-up guys who can barely string two words together.” Jesse screwed up his face. “Adrian! Adrian!” His Stallone impersonation sucked.
“Funny.” Tomas finished his burger and started in on the chips. He wanted to ask Jesse what his type was. After all, Tomas didn’t have a college degree and wasn’t planning to get one. He was pretty built. Not Stallone built, but still. A lot bigger than any of the guys he’d seen Jesse hang out with.
“Yeah. He’s such a hypocrite.”
They watched Stallone spraying machine gun fire for a few minutes. Tomas gathered courage from the man on the screen. If Rambo could survive a POW camp and hide out in the jungle while kicking ass, Tomas could figure out what to say to Jesse. “I don’t want you to move out.”
Jesse darted a glance in his direction, but then went back to watching the movie. “I know.” There was a little smile on his face, just on one side.
Tomas wanted to touch him again. Jesse wouldn’t stop him, but Tomas couldn’t quite do it, at least not yet. He needed time to sort out things in his head first. “So you’ll stay?”
He hated having to ask. He wanted to tell Jesse to stay, to grab and kiss him and convince him with his body.
“Yeah, I guess.” Jesse kept his attention on the screen. “For now.”
“Okay.” Tomas smiled. Funny, but he liked how Jesse kept him at arm’s length. Sometimes Tomas hated Jesse’s walls, but at times like this he loved that Jesse was so self-contained.
“Do you want the bed or the couch tonight? I’m pretty beat.” Jesse put his dish and bottle in the kitchen before coming back to the couch. He turned sideways and put his feet up on the cushions. Not close enough he was touching Tomas, but closer than he’d been before.
Tomas loved him so much.
“You take the bed.” Tomas stroked the top of Jesse’s foot. The connection of skin made him shiver. “I got it last night.” He wanted to kiss Jesse’s cheek. So he did. Then he got up and did the dishes.
Jesse gave him a small but cheeky wink. “You’re only giving me the bed because the sheets are gross.”
Tomas laughed. He’d forgotten about that. “I’ll put some new ones on for you, fancy boy.”
“I can do it.” Jesse went to the closet for fresh sheets, but folded out the loveseat to make that bed first. The scene felt warm and homey, the way Tomas felt with Jesse every night.
“Jess—” Tomas started.
Jesse cut him off. “Y’know…” He looked up, holding a pillow half-stuffed into a pillowcase. His hazel eyes were honest and open. “You don’t have to be perfect.”
Tomas’s chest hurt, as if Jesse had shot him straight through. His heart was bleeding, but that was okay, because it bled for the skinny, pretty boy standing in the middle of his living room. “Jess—”
“You don’t have to be perfect.” Jesse shook his head. He swallowed hard, but then smiled. “I still like you.”
“Fuck, Jess.” Tomas blinked back tears. He couldn’t tell if he was happy or sad, only that Jesse had every part of him. “I like you so much.”
Jesse nodded. He smiled down at what he was doing and finished stuffing the pillowcase. “I know.”

RELAY FOR LIFE [DEADZONE 2]

Marcel Carter has been in love with Andrew since he started running for Deadzone five years previously but never had the courage to ask him out. It isn’t until Andrew is lost that he realizes he’s been wasting time.
Matthew Gibson volunteers frequently for dangerous field missions, leaving little time for real relationships. He thinks he’s ready to put that life behind him until his cousin, Brooklyn, asks him to help rescue Andrew. When the three meet, sparks fly, and Matthew thinks he’s finally found what he’s been missing.
As they fight to survive zombies unlike any they’ve faced before and uncover dangerous government conspiracies, they’ll have to determine if their newfound love is real or if it only exists in the dead zone.
EXCERPT
Matthew smiled in the light of the moon and Marcel’s heart tripped over itself. “So how about you, Marcel? What is your story?”
Marcel shifted. “I don’t really have one. I had civilian parents. They run a small tax business in sector four. I’m no good with numbers, so when I went to training school I majored in field training. After graduation, I got a job at Deadzone and have been there ever since. Andrew was my first assignment.”
“You must care about him a lot to stay on with him.” It was a statement. Was Marcel really that obvious?
He shrugged. “Of course I do. We’ve been friends for years now.”
“So tell me about him,” Matthew encouraged. “I’ve heard what the media says about him. I know he’s one of the best runners in the country, and I know he donates copious amounts of money to the National Orphanage. But other than that, there isn’t too much info on him.”
Marcel smiled at the thought of Andrew. He sighed softly and leaned back against his bag, stretching out so he could have a full view of the stars above him. “He’s wonderful. A little timid but there is a thread of steel running through him. He’s one of those people who can put away fear if he has to and has several times. There is nothing he loves more than running. I can’t imagine him doing anything else. The reason he donates to the National Orphanage fund is because he was an orphan himself. He doesn’t talk about it much, but I think that’s where his anxiety comes from. He can’t stand crowds. He’s probably much more at home in these woods than he would be on a packed busing transport.”
“How long have you been in love with him?” Matthew asked.
The macaroni he’d spooned into his mouth got sucked down the wrong pipe, and he proceeded to choke. He coughed until he was pretty sure his face was bright red, and Matthew separated the distance between them and pounded on his back in an effort to help him out.
When he finally regained the ability to breathe, he gasped, “I’m not!”
Matthew chuckled. “You’re not? Could’ve fooled me. You talk about him like he walks on water. Does he know?” He continued to pat him on the back as he spoke, making soothing circles that sent chills down Marcel’s spine.
“Um, no,” Marcel said, pulling away from Matthew’s soothing hands.
“Why not?”
“The timing has never been right,” he said. He was embarrassed to be admitting the fact out loud. Why am I telling him this?
Matthew’s breath played across the side of his face when he spoke. “Timing is everything.” For someone as bold as Matthew seemed to be to, the lack of judgment in his voice was surprising. There was more to the SCAB agent than met the eye. “You’re a good-looking guy, Marcel. There is no reason why you should be scared to ask the guy out. I know if I had you drooling over me, I’d be beyond flattered.” Shock churned in Marcel’s gut. Is he serious? Matthew cleared his throat. “I like your passion and your commitment. When we catch up to your run kid, I’ll see if I can’t push you two together. I’m good at getting my way.”
I just bet you are. Aloud he said, “That won’t be necessary. I’m planning on making my intentions known.”
Matthew smiled slowly. “Good for you.” He moved over to where he’d left his pack, and Marcel breathed a sigh of relief. It was very hard to think when Matthew was near him. Which was weird considering he’d never felt that way about anyone other than Andrew. A little niggle of guilt ate at him. He shouldn’t be attracted to Matthew.
He rolled over and dug in his bag, looking for his sleeping throw. “I’m going to go on to grab some sleep. Take first shift?”
Matthew nodded. “Yeah. I’m too wound, so I’ll be up for a while. Get some shut-eye. I’ll wake you up in four hours.”
Marcel crawled into the tent and wrapped his throw around him. The automated heating system in the blanket regulated for the warm night, making the material feel almost sheer. He toed off his boots but left his socks on. He didn’t dare get more undressed than this, just in case of a night raid.
“You know, if it doesn’t work out with Andrew. I’d really like to take you out,” Matthew said from outside the tent.
“What?” Marcel asked, needing clarification. Maybe he needed his hearing checked. He couldn’t have asked what he thought he asked.
Matthew chuckled. “You’re a good-looking guy, Marcel, loyal, assertive. I think I’d like to take you out. Just think about it.”
Marcel’s heart pounded. Jeez. He hadn’t been expecting that. He hadn’t been asked out on a date in… He strained his mind to remember the last time. It had been years. He was pretty sure of it. It wasn’t that he hadn’t had encounters, but he was a bit of a homebody himself and didn’t frequent anywhere but his usual pub and his work place. Since he got hazard pay for assisting the run kid, he had a tidy little nest egg saved up so he didn’t work in between assignments.
“Hey, Matthew?”
“What?”
“Why would you ask me out? You don’t know me.”
Matthew chuckled. “You’re attractive, and I like you. Why wouldn’t I ask you out?”
Marcel had no answer for that. He just knew that he was somehow deeply thrown off by the blunt way Matthew assessed the world. It was refreshing and pulling. It was also completely off-limits considering his intention to ask out Andrew. He cursed himself a thousand times for being a fool. Even considering a date with Matthew was inappropriate. Why can’t I have something like the company presidents have? The illicit thought was banished as soon as it crossed his mind. Andrew would never go for something like that. He didn’t seem like the type.
INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Q: Do you work best on a deadline, or do you need freedom from time constraints?I’m a deadline junkie when it comes to writing. I set a daily word count for myself and if I don’t meet it, I feel like I’ve flunked an exam or something. Though when it comes to my edits, I tend to procrastinate. Without a deadline, I’d never get those done.
Q: How do you know you’ve written a good book?I know I’ve written a good book when I am sad that it’s ended. I don’t know if that qualifies as “good” but I know if I enjoyed writing it, it’s good in my opinion.
Q: How do you keep your characters and stories organized?Microsoft Excel. I would be lost without my color-coded spreadsheets.
Q: Are you a Swooper (write first, edit later,) a Basher (edit each sentence as you go,) or both?Certainly a Swooper. If I try and edit as I go I get hung up on the grammar and forget where the story is going.
Q: What is the one thing you must have to be able to write?Caffeine, soft music, and scented candles don’t hurt. Though if I had to pick just one it would be the caffeine. Romancing the Muse takes effort. He’s a Diva that way.
Q: Did you have any bad habits when you began writing? How did you correct those habits?Dear Lord, tons! I think the correction was a combination of trial and error and friends in the genre who basically set me down and said “What are you doing?!”. I honestly think those sit-downs were what made me a better writer overall.
Q: What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?I’m currently working on a joint series with another author, Anitra Lynn McLeod, called Owned in a sexy sci-fi setting. I’ve never written aliens before so it has been a very interesting experience and I think that readers will enjoy the many shenanigans I make these new characters get into.
Q: What types of scenes are your favorite to write? My favorite type of scene would have to be that moment when the characters first meet. That spark and attraction are always the most fun to play off of and it’s interesting to see how my characters handle themselves.
Q: How do you feel about the term “Mommy Porn”?I find the term very derogatory. The idea that these books are somehow “cute” because they have explicit sex and have a largely female audience is pretty demeaning if you sit back and think about it. I don’t find anything “cute” or mommy-like when I’m reading about sexy guys or gals, depending on the preference, getting it on.
Q: Are you always in the driver’s seat? Or do your characters drag you along for the ride?I am definitely the tag along when it comes to my characters. I ride passenger while they drive. Sometimes we go off-roading and take paths that I don’t expect the story to go, always fun.
Q: What is your least favorite part of the writing process? My least favorite part about the writing process has definitely got to be the edits. I make this perfect story and then editors come in and tell me what needs to be smoothed out to make it even better. The growing process can be a bit painful at times.

About Heather Rainier…
I live in South Central Texas, writing the type of novel I love to read: more erotic and edgy than the mainstream, with plenty of sweet romance mixed in. I write erotic romances exclusively for Siren Publishing, under their Everlasting imprint. My love of romantic fiction began as a teenager when my mom gave me copies of Kathleen Woodiwiss’s “The Flame and the Flower” and Bertrice Small’s “Skye O'Malley.” To this day I'm pretty sure that was her idea of the “birds and the bees” talk.
My husband and I met in a scenario very much like the ones I’ve written about. He was the alpha hero who stepped in when this “damsel in distress” needed rescuing from a nefarious pervert. It’s no wonder I went on to write erotic romance when I had him to inspire me. My favorite type of hero is the gentle, lovable giant but readers will discover a variety of heroes and alphas in my novels, from nearly perfect to very flawed. I hope readers relate to my heroines, and the challenges and dilemmas they face head-on.
I love to chat with readers on Facebook and talk about my books and whatever else comes to mind on my blog, The Divine Tease. When not pounding on my keyboard, I'm usually busy corralling my kids or loving on my smokin’ hot husband, who thankfully loves to cook.
THE DIVINE CREEK RANCH COLLECTION: TANGLED IN DIVINE
Robbed of her family’s legacy, Gwen Henderson blindly

Rolling like a tumbleweed through life, Julian Alvarez takes the chance to be with Gwen, knowing she can’t stay permanently and his heart may be in ruins when she leaves.
Resigned to loneliness, Chris Potter believes his faults and lack of finesse may mean he’ll spend life looking out for others but never knowing love—until the day he sets eyes on a feisty cowgirl named Gwen.
Can she trade her dreams of life in Colorado for love in Divine, Texas—and is she even capable of leaving the two cowboys who have stolen her heart?
Standing Out From the Crowd
I’m approaching this topic as a successful published author but much of what I have to say applies to all aspects of my life. Standing out from the crowd means that I’m different from every other author, and every other person out there. I’m purposely handling myself differently. Not because I’m better but because that’s how I get noticed.

If the social media landscape is overwhelmingly negative, I make a point of being positive or encouraging. If I’m talking in person or online with a group of women and they complain about their spouses, I either withdraw or do my best to course-correct. This is important because if you’re my friend and you’re complaining about your spouse that’s going to make it hard for me to like your husband if I ever meet him. This gig is hard enough with a supportive spouse and I want to kick the ass of any man who doesn’t give his author-wife his full, loving support.
I also stand out from the crowd as a writer by engaging with readers. Don’t get me wrong, I love interacting with my fellow authors, Gabrielle in particular, because she’s just so damned real. But when I get on social media, my goal is to be sociable with readers. I can blog hop, guest blog, and shout out for other authors until I’m blue in the face but if the audience is only other writers what good did that do me? I want to be with readers. I want to talk to them. I want to crawl inside their heads and find out what they want to read about so I can give it to them. I want to be different because different is memorable. That is true in life too, not just as a professional author/entrepreneur.
Life is so fast-paced and complex that many of us go through our days not taking the time to simply greet each other or make eye contact. I’m naturally a shy person but when it became apparent that I was going to go for this whole published author gig, I determined to overcome that. I cut my teeth for socializing with strangers on all the poor cashiers at our local Wal-Mart and the grocery store, and the bank, and the clothing store I shop at, and the gas station. I chat them all up. I grew up in this town, but it wasn’t until the last two years that I got to know any of the people living in it. Many of them are shocked that someone will do something as simple as make eye contact with them and remember their name. Tell me that’s not standing out from the crowd.
In this current publishing landscape, to stand back and disdain socializing with readers because “I have a book to finish” is tantamount to saying I don’t have time for my readers but I sure want their money.
So here I am, the curvy chick who writes for other curvy chicks who enjoy reading erotic MFM ménage romance, with an MF thrown in there when the mood strikes. JI want to thank Gabrielle and wish her a big, BIG Happy Birthday!! I hope all your birthday wishes come true and that your birthday spanking is a memorable one! <3

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Q: Thinking back on your first book, is there anything you would have done differently? My first book, Divine Grace, is the longest book in the Divine Creek Ranch Collection at 200,066 words. That’s a long-ass book. I wouldn’t change the story—the soul of the book—because readers still share with me how much the story meant to them. But I’ve learned a thing or two about pacing and streamlining since I wrote that book. If I ever had the chance, I’d go back and streamline. Then I’d add back in the BDSM my first, and former, editor suggested I cut out of it. Big mistake. Huge.
Q: If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would it be and why?I’d want to spend the day with Grace Warner, from Divine Grace, since she is the anchor heroine and chief matchmaker for the entire series. If readers want to know which hero I’d want to spend time with, it would be Ethan Grant, one of Grace’s husbands. The epitome of the Loving Dom, he doesn’t need any club play scenes for readers to know that he understands the needs of a sub, and a woman.
Q: What is one thing about the publishing world that surprised you the most? That I merited mentorship of someone in the publishing field who clearly didn’t have to spend their valuable time on me, but did in order to give me a good start as an author.
Q: How do you know you’ve written a good book?I know I’ve written a good book when I cry as I write the last chapter because I’m so sad to see it end, and I’m just not ready to let go of the characters.
Q: How do you keep your characters and stories organized?Organized??? Isn’t that what the “Find” feature in Word is for? Oh…look…shiny!

Q: What is the one thing you must have to be able to write?Quiet. J Not always easy to achieve when I share an office with my husband and have the Rainier children—Brattley and Tragedy are their pseudonyms—bursting in on me while I’m trying to create. They know the real meaning of fear, LOL.
Q: What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?Besides preparing for the release of Tangled in Divine on April 19th, I’m currently writing Lucy’s Revenge, book 15 in the Divine Creek Ranch Collection. One of the heroes in this book is…well…a bit of an ass. He has his reasons, which are valid, and he is coming around. But he’s been a challenge. Good thing I love a challenge. J
Q: What advice would you give an aspiring author about the ins and outs of the industry? There has never been a better time to be a published author than now. But know up front that your dream is going to require a lot of late nights and long hours if you want to achieve long-term success. The writing of a book is the easy, peasy part. If you ever have the luxury of being accepted and edited, take the advice of your editor to heart. Never, ever stop learning your craft. If you aren’t already reading craft books and following writer’s blogs, you need to start now. Be very careful who you trust your weaknesses with. Do not assume because you deal fairly with people that they will afford you the same luxury. Learn to spot narcissists and avoid them like the plague. And keep writing. Always keep writing.
Q: Can you offer advice on how to move on from the dreaded rejection letter? What follows is my opinion only. I believe the “dreaded rejection letter” is part of the Old World Print Publishing Paradigm. As a writer submitting to, and being rejected by, the NY print houses, we’re told that we should save those rejection letters and be proud of them like a badge of honor. I kindly say bullshit. J In the digital age of publishing, where the playing field is much broader and there are more of us, if an author receives a rejection e-mail with the request to revise and resubmit, this is NOT a badge of honor and should never be discussed online. Just revise according to the house style and standards and resubmit. A rejection from a digital publisher does not carry the same connotation as it does from a print publisher. In my opinion, neither type of rejection is something that should be discussed online but definitely learned from. Hone your craft.
Q: When is your favorite time of day to write?Late at night after everyone else is asleep, when I’ve had a long, hard day. Once my self-editing inhibitions are totally exhausted, the primordial brain kicks in and magic happens.
Q: When and where can readers look forward to seeing you this year?I will be at the RT Booklover’s Convention in Kansas City, MO from May 1-5, co-hostessing the Siren BookStrand table in Club RT with fellow Siren authors Morgan Ashbury, Corinne Davies, and Peyton Elizabeth. During this convention, I will be signing at the E-book Expo on Thursday, May 2nd from 4-6 pm. On the morning of Saturday May 4th I will be greeting readers waiting in line outside the Giant Book Fair which starts at 11:00am and runs until 2:00.

I encourage all readers to attend as this may be their only chance to locate their favorite e-book/POD authors who have unfortunately been EXCLUDED from the Giant Book Fair at RT.
Q: What is one of your biggest pet peeves?Paying nearly one thousand dollars in registration fees for a convention and then being told at the last minute that I’ve been excluded from the single most well-attended event of the entire convention. The important thing in life is to find ways around obstacles.
