The Magical Mystery Smell

SO this weekend, a smell happened. It was not a good smell.

I went into my office, which adjoins the laundry room, wherein lives The Dread Cat Box, and I could SMELL the presence of the Dread Cat Box. Like, entering one room of my house, I knew a cat box existed in another. This is WRONGFUL.

I called Sam to come clean it out.

Parenthetical: Boggart the cat is SAM’S cat because everyone else hates him, and he hates everyone else. He quite likes Sam and is a useful pet and friend to him, which...

3 Questions: Lydia Netzer (& a CONTEST to win the AUDIO BOOK!)

Okay, I have a GREAT and entertaining interview with Lydia in a sec, but first…would you like to win a copy of the audiobook, which I read? I have THREE copies up for grabs this go round…

All you have to do is, HELP ME GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THIS BOOK. A book from a previously unknown writer has about six weeks to catch on and find its place, and then BOOM, it is gone. We are about to head into the FIRST FULL WEEK of release. And let me tell you, this book deserves to find its place!

SO far so...

LAUNCH LAUNCH LAUNCH

TEN — The number of years, more or less, that Lydia Netzer spent writing SHINE SHINE SHINE, her amazing book about motherhood, love, autism, robots, and what it means to be human.

“Over the moon with a metaphysical spin. Heart-tugging…it is struggling to understand the physical realities of life and the nature of what makes us human….Nicely unpredictable…Extraordinary.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times. And Amazon has chosen SHINE SHINE SHINE as THE Spotlight Book in their best books of the...

The Wrong Way to Invent a Cocktail

First, go to your favorite restaurant to celebrate your anniversary. You will be celebrating late. Very late. You have recently roared, screaming and delighted, up-and-down-and-whirly-through a rollercoaster of manic-powered mental illness , in the throws of which you have packed up your whole family, even both dogs, and moved them thirty miles into town.

Even the cat you DO NOT LIKE was moved, gently, via cat carrier, in the front seat of your car, and he was cussing you out it Meowish the...

Today’s helpful hint, because I AM A HELPER: If you ever have a massive brain cramp and can’t remember the name Georgia O’Keeffe, EVEN THOUGH YOU LIVE IN GEORGIA, go to Google and type, “flower paintings that look like female ge” and google will already be saying, “GEORGIA O’KEEFFE, DUMMY,” before you can reach the N key.

YOU ARE WELCOME.

THE BOOK IS GOING. Right now I am so in love with William Ashe I am having a hard time not licking my monitor to get a taste of him. When the book starts to...

Winnerriffica (THIS IS A WORD! *Stern Glare* IT IS.) Updated with drink recipe!

The cocktail name contest was a mistake. There are about fifty REALLY strong contenders. You guys should all get jobs naming stuff. Like race horses and nail polish colors and boats and more drinks. Seriously, beloveds, you are GOLDEN. You guys even helped me name BACKSEAT SAINTS, remember? WHO SAID “Saints in the Backseat?” It is making me crazy to not remember, and I can’t find it in the archives. I should have put you in the dern acknowledgements, how churlish.

I wish I had fifty more bab...

A Good Hard Liquor: A Contest for Cocktail & Good Book Afficionados Alike

My Favorite Quote from the Comments yesterday comes courtesy of Kira: If you feed the squirrels, the terrorists win. Because squirrels ARE terrorists and they win by eating.

HA! I WANT TO WIN BY EATING.

To your left, you will see Ann Napolitano. She is holding the hot fresh new paperback of the book that hops up and down from 1 to 3 in my top three reads for 2011, depending on which one I have read most recently. I bought four copies of this book IN HARDBACK to give to my mother and other pe...

Sunday Dinner

It’s the last week to put your eyes to right, click on the audio cover of SHINE SHINE SHINE and hear me read the first chapter for free. It goes poof I think July 1? Via MacMillan Code Magic? NO IDEA HOW. But it might.

SO! My friend Alison told me about this contraption that basically allows you to violate a chicken corpse with an open beer can and then set it, like a head on a stake, onto a fiery grill and torture it via indirect flame-y heat for an hour and change.

We invested seven dollars...

Eyes Right

Yes, slide your eyes to the right. To your left, you will find nothing but AWFUL SQUIRRELS.

To the right, you will see I am celebrating the fact that June is audiobook month. I like to listen to audiobooks, myself. It has been my ongoing delight to get to read the audio versions of my last four books.

It is a great and lasting pleasure, and those of you have supported this habit of mine by listening and buying and telling folks and saying so on the interwebs at the tweeter or the audible.com...
