Wednesday Wonders: FIGHT CARD: LADIES NIGHT

Today's Wednesday Wonders features author Carol Malone and her contribution to FIGHT CARD: LADIES NIGHT .

Los Angeles, 1954 ... Gangsters, crime, boxing – and romance ...

Jimmy Doherty, a hard-luck orphan from the south side of Chicago, was mentored in the sweet science of boxing by Father Tim Brophy, the Battling Priest of St. Vincent's Asylum for Boys. Jimmy’s fists were good enough to take him to LA where he has begun his rise up the local fight-cards. He has big plans to be a contender and even bigger plans for Lindy – his trainer’s only daughter, who's sweeter than apple pie and harder to resist.

But when Lindy is arrested for killing a boxer with ties to gangster Mickey Cohen, Jimmy is forced to join forces with the arresting detective – who would like to do much more with Lindy than put her in handcuffs – in a desperate search for the real killer.

Love can be murder – in the ring and out ...

Excerpt from Ladies Night:
I hope you’ll enjoy my favorite excerpt from “Ladies Night.” Lindy’s just been arrested for the murder of another boxer, a competitor of her husband Jimmy.
Even in the dark, Lindy could see their make-up hadn’t survived the day. Most of it had floated south on their faces like a slow-moving river making them look like sad circus clowns. Daisy especially. Or had she been crying?“So, if you ain’t one of us, who’d you mug or rub out?” Daisy said.“I was arrested for the murder of Rocko Russo, the fighter.”“Ain’t no way,” Louella said. “You tellin’ the truth?”“Yes. Rocko’s dead. But I didn’t kill him.”“Of course not, honey,” Louella said. “A little thing like you couldn’a hurt a fly let alone that horrible monster. That big brute had some mean muscle on him, went all the way to the bone all right.”“And a terrible mean fist,” Daisy said, sadness on her make-up smeared face. Lindy was afraid to ask. She could only guess how they were acquainted with Rocko and she hurt for them. “So, DeLuca, he’s the one that nabbed you?” Louella said, threading her arms through the bars. “He’s a looker, that one. Um-mmm. That’s right. Mighty fine.”“You ever do him?” Daisy turned to Louella.“Nah. He’s a saint. Waiting on Miss Right an all.”“Say, chickie.” Daisy turned to Lindy. “You and DeLuca ...” Daisy winked. “What?” Lindy felt the blood drain from her head. “Absolutely not. I’m married.”“That right?” Louella perked up. “Who’s the lucky man?”Lindy smiled for the first time in many hours. “He’s a boxer and such a wonderful, handsome man.”“You don’t say? What’s his name? Maybe I know him.” Her smile was sly.Lindy hoped she was teasing. “Jimmy Doherty. Won his first bout last Friday night.”Louella shook her head. “Remember, Daisy. We was with Rocko till nearly midnight after his fight before he ditched us and took off.”There was a deep sorrow etched on Daisy’s face and for the first time, Lindy saw the remnants of what looked like a mouse under Daisy’s eye. “Oh, yeah. I remember.”Louella broke the somber mood that fell over the cellblock. “So what now, honey? You just coolin’ your heels in stir with us here big-time mama’s?” Louella shook her dark head and hooted a bawdy laugh. “That just don’t seem right, a pretty little thing like you accused of murderin’ that no good, dirty snake. Not right at all. DeLuca’ll find out the truth. Yes, sir. Ain’t right. At least that bugger ain’t goin’ hurt us no more.”What had Rocko done to these two women? Lindy could only imagine and she didn’t like what she thought. She couldn’t understand how women like Daisy and Louella could shame themselves and take up the oldest profession. She wished she could help them, take away their troubles and removed them from the filthy, self-degrading way they had to make a living. But what could she do?
 About Carol Malone:

Carol Malone successfully combines her three passions – writing, sports, and romance, in nail-biting, page-turning historical sports stories. She's the very first woman to climb under the ropes of the boxing ring in the male dominated territory of Fight Card, and punched out a mash-up of happily ever after and kick-in-the-pants, fist-pounding action. If not hammering out new tales that entice her readers to scramble into a front row seat for thrilling tales of physical endurance and tender passion, Carol’s reading, watching sports on TV, or hanging with her "end-of-the-world” author husband on the cool coast of California. To talk sports and amour, and learn about Carol's latest book releases, visit Carol on her website: www.carolmalone.net.

Wednesday Wonders: ...LIKE FOOTPRINTS IN THE WIND

Today's Wednesday Wonders guest author is Pam Atherstone featuring her novel, ... Like Footprints in the Wind . On a personal note, I met Pam when she spoke at the Merced County Genealogical Society on the topic of Germans in Russia genealogy research. Motivated by her research, she wrote a novel based on the experiences  this group of German-Russian citizens suffered when "Papa Stalin" declared them enemies of the state. She offered her book for sale at our meeting, I bought a copy, and I started reading it once I arrived home. I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Click HERE for the YouTube trailer.

About the Novel:

Few people know about the “purge of the Kulaks” in Russia, as this is a suppressed part of history.  Based on real stories of people who actually lived through this terrible time, the fictional Jahnle family is falsely “evacuated” from their farm in a small village near the Black Sea, and begins their journey north, into the unknown, with many other German-Russian families like them.  It is nearly harvest season of 1929.  Not understanding what is happening to them, the family experiences adventure at the beginning of their trek, as they traverse the first four hundred miles by horse and wagon.

During this trip they come into contact with the NKVD (the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs, which later becomes the foundation of the KGB.)  They are loaded into an overcrowded cattle-car on a very long train and taken nearly nine-hundred miles to the labor camps on the coast of the White Sea, near the town of Onega, in western Siberia. Here they are exposed to separation, interrogation, starvation, over-work, cruelty and death.

The ever-present love of the family members for one another, combined with the solid foundation of their faith in God, runs like a fine silk thread holding them together through the worst of situations, and yet doubt and disbelief often permeate their souls.  But this story is not all doom and gloom.  There is hope and the promise of a better life for some of them.

Novel Excerpt:

Sofia stopped and faced Katerina; tears welled up in her pale blue eyes as she, too, removed her facial covering. “Katerina you are as close to me as anybody has ever been. You are friend, companion, partner and confidant. If we were sisters we could not be closer. So I feel you already know the answer to your question. The Soviets do not care about any of us, we will never know what has happened to our children or husbands or any of our people. Future generations will never know we even existed…” she paused and turned Katerina to face the path they had just traversed. The wind was blowing loose snow over their tracks. Sofia’s voice trailed away as she continued, “we will all just vanish…like footprints in the wind.”

About the Author:

Pamela Atherstone
I am the great-granddaughter of German-Russian immigrants and an amateur genealogist focusing on Russians of German heritage. I’m a member of the American Historical Society of the Germans from Russia and the Germans from Russia Heritage Society, as well as the Genealogical Society of Stanislaus County. I attend the Writers Workshop at the Modesto Institute of Continued Learning (MICL) where I enjoy combining my love of family with my love of horses in the stories I write.
I am a mother and grandmother. A lifelong Californian, I live in the Central Valley of California with my husband, Jim, and my horses and dogs.

Author Q & A:  Ukraine Dress - 1912
1. What inspired you to become a writer?            Information from Russia on family members, who remained behind when my great-grandparents emigrated, seems to be non-existent.  The stories I unearthed regarding the history of the Germans in Russia, following the Revolution of 1917, explained these gaping holes and the lack of recorded information about the people.  Knowledge of those inhabitants, and what they experienced, is relatively unknown among the general populations today, and the more I learn, the more I wish to share the information with others.
 2. How long did it take you to acquire the skills to become a writer?            I never set out to write a book.  Selected as Rebecca’s Reads Choice Awards Fiction Book of the Year 2013, and first place Historical Fiction, and a finalist in the Reader’s Favorite International Book Awards, this venture came as a result of being forced into disability retirement.  Needing something to keep me busy during a life-changing transition, I discovered the Modesto Institute of Continued Learning (MICL) at Modesto Junior College, and the Writer’s Workshop offered in the curriculum. This program is geared toward retirees as a place to go to continue the learning process in many project areas. I began writing short vignettes, some memoirs and others pure fiction, whatever popped into my mind when I sat down to my computer.  One evening I began writing about a farmer in Russia (based on my great-grandfather) and soon realized I was going far beyond a short story.   German-Russians being removed from their farms3. How many books have you written?            This is my first, but I am in the process of completing a sequel.  I also have a couple of others started for future completion.

4. Some writers go on long walks; others keep a journal, write at a café, or listen to music. What do you do for inspiration and unleashing your creativity?            With the first book, I spent many hours in the local Border’s Book Store.  I don’t know why, but I could concentrate on my writing there.  Now that the store has closed, I am struggling for quiet time at home.  I often write late at night, when there are few interruptions.  German-Russians traveling in wagon trains to collection points

5. What are you working on now?            The sequel to “…Like Footprints in the Wind.”  When the book ends, the main characters are in a limbo situation, waiting for passage to America.  The book I am currently working on will take them to a new life in a new land.

Bonus Excerpt:
This night seemed cooler than previous ones. The waning moon shed little light upon those who slept beneath it.  Sometime after midnight, Johannes was awakened by the sound of the car’s tires as they slowly rolled by.  He lay still as he heard the car stop and someone get out.  The crunching of boot soles on gravel gave him a chill as he knew they were approaching him.  He felt the cold hard steel of a rifle barrel being pushed into his shoulder. A hushed voice growled “Shhh,” in his ear.  Johannes rolled out from under his blanket without disturbing Katerina.  He pulled his boots on and followed the beckoning uniform to the car.  The rifle was now jabbing into his back, pushing him into the automobile.
“I don’t know what you want, but I won’t resist you,” Johannes spoke softly as he entered the dark interior of the vehicle.  “I only ask that you do not hurt my family.”
Johannes was pushed into the back seat of the big black sedan.  He nearly choked as he drew his first breath; the air was filled with the acrid smoke of a cheap Russian cigarette.

Mealtime at the work camps
Half of the seat was already occupied by a rotund, uniformed officer, his face briefly illuminated by the orange glow of the cigarette as he inhaled deeply.  Johannes kept his eyes averted from the man’s face; he did not want to see who might be responsible for whatever might be coming.  Though, he did notice the insignia on his companion’s sleeve—the sword-entwined hammer and sickle of the NKVD.  This was not a regular soldier of the Russian army, but a member of the secret police.  He again felt the cold steel of a gun barrel in his side, a silent reminder he was not in control and that he should do as he was told.
The car unhurriedly rolled through the village.  Johannes wondered if this was an attempt to antagonize him in some way, or if his arrest was being kept silent for some special reason.  He knew he would soon find out.  He wanted to look out the windows, to get a better idea of the size of the village and the location of the railroad tracks, but each time he started to lift his eyes, the gun barrel sank further into his ribs.
Finally, the car pulled up in front of a long, narrow building.  Johannes instantly recognized this building as a holding barn for the wheat of the kolkhoz.  He also knew it would be empty at this point in time, just before harvest, and he began to worry about what else might be waiting for him there.
He closed his eyes and prayed silently.  “God, please hold my family in your hands.  I beg of you, do not let them suffer because of whatever I have done.  Spare their lives, even if you do not spare mine.”

Wednesday Wonders: REST THY HEAD

Today's Wednesday Wonder features guest author Elaine Cantrell and her paranormal mystery novel, REST THY HEAD.

About the Book:

Running away from a fiancé who betrayed her, Peyton O’Malley finds employment at a beautiful mountain inn called Rest Thy Head. She didn’t expect to live in the haunted room or to fall for the inn’s owner, a fire-scarred, war veteran who uses the inn to hide away from the world. She didn’t expect her sister to show up at Rest Thy Head either, much less her formidable mother.

Now, thanks to the aid of a friendly ghost, Peyton has a shot at true love, and so does her sister Ashley, provided the guys cooperate of course!

Novel Excerpt:

(This is the first meeting of my hero and heroine.)
She entered the barn, a big white structure with a center aisle and stalls on either side. Just inside the door she saw a dark-haired man dressed in jeans and a long-sleeved, plaid shirt brushing a pretty chestnut mare.
“Hi,” she called.
The man half turned toward her; wow, he had blue eyes to die for. The blue was so intense that it reminded her of a blue diamond she’d seen at the jewelry store. Oh, and look at those shoulders. If there was one thing she loved, it was a pair of nice shoulders. Yummy. He was just yummy.
“Yeah?” he asked, his voice abrupt and snappy.
“I’m Peyton O’Malley. I’m supposed to meet Patrick for a ride.”
“He isn’t here yet. You can sit on the bench under that tree outside and wait for him there.”
Instead of leaving the barn, Peyton stepped toward the man. “What a beautiful ... horse.”
The man quickly averted his face, but Peyton had seen the dreadful red scars that covered the entire left side of his face. They looked like burns.
“I told you to wait outside,” he growled, scowling at her with the good side of his face. “Get moving.”

BONUS INFO

Interview with Meredith, the main character in   The Best Place to Meet a Man

1.      What is your favorite past time, or hobby?
Oh, I love to read. I mean, you have no idea how much I looked forward to going to the beach and burying my nose into my latest romantic suspense novel.

2.      What is your favorite book?
You honestly expect me to narrow it down to one book? Really? How can people do that? I would be hard-pressed to narrow it down to ten favorites. Or maybe twenty. I do like romances, however. And mysteries. And suspense novels. And combinations of the above.

3.      Do you prefer to plan things, or be spontaneous?
Oh, I definitely prefer to plan things. After all, I am a fourth-grade school teacher. If I didn’t put together my lesson plans well ahead of time, I can’t begin to imagine what kind of pandemonium would erupt in my classroom. Then again, at home living in the same house with my sister Marion and her two year-old Xander and her new baby—well, fairly new, he’s four months old, now—who can plan? Especially when Marion’s regular sitter asks to take off for a month of vacation, and guess what?  Just because I’m off work for the summer, and, without even telling me until after it is a done deal, my dear darling sister commits me to babysit her boys through the month while this lady’s gone.

4.      Who would you consider is your least favorite person, and why?
Oh, I don’t have any least favorite persons. Well sometimes my principle at the school gets on my nerves. And my brother-in-law Eddie can run a close second. I mean, Eddie is the boys’ father, but sometimes he conveniently likes to ignore that fact.

5.      What one thing do you wish you could tell your past self?
You know, it’s great that Mom and Dad willed their house in Seaside to my sister and me. But, as much as I love Marion and her family, I think I would tell my past self to think really hard about agreeing to share the house with my younger sister. I mean, just because she is a mother doesn’t make her my mother.

6.      What is your biggest pet-peeve?
That little Xander. I mean, I’m not even his mommy. I’m just his Auntie Meredith. But, do you think that stops him from pounding on my bedroom door anytime he thinks I might want to be alone and enjoy some peace and quiet? No. If he can’t rouse Marion when she locks herself in the hall bath for a few minutes of privacy, he comes and tries my door.

7.      Do you think that there is a specific message to your story, that you’d like your readers to learn?
Well, you know, from the time we were young, Marion and I were taught to be very careful about meeting strangers at public places. You know, like the beach? I mean, with everything that happens these days, a person can never be too careful. That’s why Jeff went to the beach to run and I went to read—both of us carefully minding our own business. But, guess what can happen to caution when you add an adventurous two year-old into the mix?

SUMMER HEARTS BLOG TOUR: Shark Boss

Hello! Today we are going to focus on the next book in the compilation. Check it out!
Shark Boss:
When Tara takes up a job at the local aquarium, her colleagues warn her about their harsh boss, Mr. Carter Jones. She soon discovers how impatient he can be, but she also can’t deny her fascination and attraction to him. Carter can’t stop watching Tara as she works but holds back from her because of his secrets. If she knew what he was, she would never want him. Could the reason for Carter’s moods be related to something more troubling than what’s on the surface? Tara soon discovers Carter’s secret, and it only bonds them closer. But the curse starts to take over Carter’s life, and he won’t give his heart to a beautiful woman when he can only cause her pain.

Now about the amazing lady behind this book!
Kathy Bosman
Kathy loves reading and writing even more. She homeschools her three kids, so in between unsuccessfully explaining the difference between subject and predicate or how to divide fractions, she enters an imaginary world of troubled and passionate characters whose stories take over the page. Kathy lives in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, where the summers are hot, the winters cool, and bugs thrive. Her first published novel, Wedding Gown Girl, came out in 2012 with Astraea Press. She belongs to the Romance Writers of South Africa Group (ROSA) which has been her greatest support and inspiration the last few years.

SNIPPET
A tingle ran up his spine, and cold showers prickled the top of his head. He held his temples in his hands, groaning and swaying with the breeze, surprised he didn’t fall down the two stories to the paving stones below.
The tingling in his back became an ache. His breath became labored.
“No, not now. I’m not ready.”
Usually they came in the dead of night. Never at breaking dawn.
But things had accelerated lately. He should have been prepared.
Somehow, the fun he’d had teaching Tara how to feed the sharks yesterday afternoon had distracted him, made him forget to stay alert. Guarded. He’d momentarily stopped dreading, had ignored the swirling in his gut, the tension eating away at his every step.

SUMMER HEARTS BLOG TOUR: Summer Holiday

Hello!
Today we are going to focus on the next book in the compilation. Check it out!
Summer Holiday:
In the summer of 1905, Lizzy Gordon’s father dismisses her desires to be a doctor, demanding she become a teacher—a profession which does not allow women to marry.
Teacher Brent Pierce is dedicated to expanding young minds, but circumstances are forcing him to take over the family farm.     Before the summer is over Lizzy and Brent will be forced to make hard decisions. Can they find the courage to each stand up for themselves and still be together?

Now about the fabulous lady behind this book!

Carol Malone

Award-winning author Carol Malone has successfully combined her three passions – romance, sports, and writing in her two highly-rated books, Fight Card Romance: Ladies Night, and Ladies Night Christmas sequel. She was the first woman to write a romance for the all-male dominated genre. Carol invites her readers to scramble into a front row seat for a thrill-ride of suspense, sports, and romance. If not hammering out new tales, Carol’s loves reading, sports, and hanging with her author husband on the coast of California.

Interview with Brent and Lizzy, the main characters in Summer Holiday

1.      What is your favorite past time, or hobby?

Brent: swimming up at the lake or reading the classics like Huck Finn

Lizzy:  wading in the creek with cousin Wyatt, playing with Uncle Ern’s granddaughters, Rosy and Hilda, and tormenting her other cousin, Cat Boatwright.

2.      What is your favorite book?

Lizzy: Medical journals with the latest discoveries in medicine.

Brent: Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer, Great Expectations, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, White Fang

3.      Do prefer to plan things, or be spontaneous?

Lizzy: To be spontaneous...

Brent: I like to plan out my life.

4.      Who would you consider is your least favorite person, and why?

Lizzy & Brent: Catrina Boatwright. She tried to sabotage our first outing together as a couple by putting rancid food in Lizzy’s basket and passing Lizzy’s off as her own. Lizzy’s Father runs a very close second.

5.      What is your biggest pet-peeve?

Lizzy & Brent: being told what we have to do

6.      Did you struggle to tell your author anything?

Brent: Carol didn’t understand my motivation for wanting to be a teacher all that well and why I couldn’t allow Lizzy to give up on her dreams. I figured a man like me didn’t deserve a fine lady doctor like I knew Lizzy would become.

7.      What is your favorite part of your story?

Brent & Lizzy: The first night we kissed in the barn.

Brent: Actually, I liked rescuing Lizzy from the wicked apple tree.
Lizzy: Oh, you....

SUMMER HEARTS BLOG TOUR: Drowning Sandy

Hello! Today we are going to focus on the next book in the compilation. Check it out!
Drowning Sandy:
The water is calling...and Sandy can no longer resist the urge to unleash her mermaid form. But a simple swim in Lake Ontario ends when she discovers the truth of her own banishment. When long time crush, Alardo, seems to shift in a direction she never dreamed possible, Sandy must make a choice — mermaid or human? Once she chooses, she can never go back.

Now about the crazy lady behind this book!

Sarah Daley
Sarah lives in Arizona with her best friend and husband, Chris, their adorable monster child, and neurotic dog.
At the age of six, she became a reading machine. Devouring everything she could possibly get her hands on. In high school she almost failed English three times because of her detest for writing book reports. Today, Sarah writes whatever stories haunt her dreams, and struggles to focus on one idea at a time. When she isn’t enjoying time with her family, or writing, you will find her nose stuck in a book, or out walking and enjoying the sunshine.
Drowning Sandy is her debut novella!

Interview with Sandy and Alardo the main characters in Drowning Sandy

1.      What is your favorite food?
Sandy: My mother’s lasagna, ooey-gooey and fresh from the oven. (Excuse me while I wipe off this drool.)

Alardo: I’ve got a hard-core sweet tooth. Chocolate, carmel, anything sweet really. Not suppose to eat sweets with the strict diet the guard is on, but what they don’t know won’t hurt them.

2.      Do prefer to plan things, or be spontaneous?
Sandy: I’m a planner. I plan everything, and have lists of the lists that need to be made. I do not take change well at ALL.

Alardo: I like to think I’m the perfect mix of both. Not to be cocky, but I can be spontaneous when I need to be, and yet I don’t mind taking my time and planning things out when it comes to getting things right.

3.      What one thing do you wish you could tell your past self?
Sandy: That’s a tough question. Maybe I’d tell myself to just breath, but I don’t think I’d tell myself to do anything differently, because I’m pretty happy with the way things have ended up. It’s not perfect, but I feel like I’m where I was meant to be.

Alardo: O-o-oh that’s a tough one. I think I’d have to tell myself, to not hang with Shelly quite as much as I had. Who would have know that Sandy would take so absolutely wrong. Ugh.

4.      Did you struggle to tell your author anything? Sandy: Actually in the beginning she wanted me to share this book with my twin. It took her, like, two drafts before she got the fact that this was MY book. I love my twin, but this… this was about my moment. Shelly’s will come, and I can’t wait for you to read it!
Alardo: Nah, Sands was plenty of vocal for me. I knew Shelly wasn’t meant to be a lead roll in this book. I just sat back and waited, because my side of the story was told pretty straight on.
