Hey Leigh, In S&B Alina asked Fedyor why he chose to be a Corporalki. How can Grisha chose what the specialize in?

Alina asks Fedyor why he chose to be a Heartrender, not a Healer.

Grisha can’t choose their Orders, but they do specialize within their Orders depending on the affinities that they demonstrate (like calls to like).

So you’d begin training as a Materialki, but then you’d see whether you were more gifted as a Durast or an Alkemi. Etherealki are a little different because their affinities present earlier and more clearly.

Think of being Corporalki as being pre-med. You’re going through the most rigorous training of any of the Grisha Orders and you’re all learning  how to understand and manipulate human anatomy. But at some point, it’s time to specialize. As Fedyor says, “To kill or to cure? We each have our own gifts.”

BONUS CONTENT IS COMING! (and treats!)

I’ve had a lot of asks in the last few days about alternate POV and bonus content. So having gotten the all clear from those on high, I can now tell you what’s coming your way…

1. “The Too Clever Fox.” This is another Ravkan folktale (like “The Witch of Duva” but much shorter) set in the world of the Grisha Trilogy. It will be available for FREE on the Tor.com site sometime in May. It’s fun. And creepy. And fun.

2. Paperback treats! A lot of you have asked (and speculated) about Mal’s time on the northern front away from Alina. Love him or hate him, the paperback of Shadow and Bone comes out on May 7th and it will give a little more insight into the boy who can make rabbits out of rocks. It features a letter from Mal to Alina written the night before he and his friends entered Fjerda to track the stag.

(I’ve always wanted to write more of Mal’s story and I’m grateful to the people at Square Fish for giving me a chance to do it. They also did an insanely beautiful job on the paperback—the stepback, the layout, so gorgeous!)

The bonus content includes a little surprise for bloggers and a crazy long interview with me. Seriously, you will never need to ask me another question again. All my secrets laid bare!

(There’s also a shout out that those of you who follow the “Shadow and Bone” tag on tumblr should recognize :)

3. And finally… okay, I can’t give you all the info on this one, but there’s another piece of bonus content coming your way around the Siege and Storm launch. I can tell you that it’s alternate POV and that it isn’t Darkling POV. (I’ve mentioned before that I won’t write from the Darkling’s perspective until the trilogy is over, and for now at least, I’m sticking to that.)

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE!

On Friday, we’re doing a little Siege and Storm reveal on EW.com’s Shelf Life. Can you guess what it is?? I’m very excited. Oh yes.

Aaaaand…

because my birthday is coming up on Saturday (hint hint, cash gifts and good wishes welcome) I’m going to do a giveaway this week. Details to come!

sometimes I get asks or emails that remind me how effing hard it was to be twelve or fifteen or eighteen and I just want to make everyone cocoa and tuck them into bed and tell them it’s going to be all right.

I made so many mistakes and took so many wrong turns and ended up at the bottom of a well so dark I thought I’d never climb out. But I did. And you will too.

I know that you did go to college, and a big one at that, but I still wanted to maybe ask for some advice. I'm from a family that can't really afford to send me to college, and I've just finished highschool. Even though I can't afford school now, I could w

Lawd, sometimes I wish I could just hug people through my tumblr dash.

First things first: IMO, whether or not you go to college has ZERO impact on your chances of becoming a writer, so let’s put that worry to bed right now. Read. Write. Find good critique partners and/or reputable workshops. You don’t need a degree to become a writer, you just need to keep writing.

Onward… college isn’t the right path for everyone, but you also don’t need to decide right now. A lot of people take a few years off between high school and college. It actually makes you a more interesting—and for some schools more appealing—applicant. So don’t feel like this is THE CROSSROADS WHERE ALL THINGS WILL BE DECIDED. You have time to figure out what you want. Take it.

I feel like there are a lot of questions I could ask you about career paths and day jobs and all that, but for now I’m going to leave it there. If you want to email me privately to talk more, I’m at LastLeigh at gmail.
