You and I are going to change the world. Just wait.

Put on your pretty clothes and wait for the next kiss, the next kind word. Wait for the stag. Wait for the collar. Wait to be made into a murderer and a slave.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I’ve never seen this particular passage quoted before

For many, photographs from World War 2 have been seen only in grainy black and white. But new colour images have emerged that show the full horror of the destruction inflicted by Nazi bombers during “The Blitz” in London. The capital sustained 76 continuous nights of attacks, from September 1940 to May 1941, which obliterated more than one million homes killed about 40,000 people The powerful images were released to mark the 70th anniversary of the launch of Winston Churchill’s ‘V for Victory’ campaign on July 19, 1941.

This lovely piece of mail became a bit of a touchstone for me while I was revising and I wanted to share it.

These campers (counselors in the back row) read Shadow and Bone aloud every night in their cabin, then dressed up as Grisha for the Fourth of July parade. (They also wrote me lovely notes with lots of interesting questions.)

I have a very clear memory of reading The Princess Bride to my cabin when I was away at camp (a luxury, I know) and in my most awkward of awkward phases (bad hair, Depeche Mode tshirts). Knowing this awesome group of girls did the same with my book really got to me. Years from now, even if the Grisha Trilogy is out of print, and I’m living in a shoe and eating spam and spiders, one of those kids is still going to remember Shadow and Bone.

Sometimes I get wrapped up in all of my writerly anxieties—I should write faster! I should write better! I should blog more! I should tour more! I should live in a better shoe! Mail like this snaps me right out of it. It reminds me of the way I read when I was younger and of just how privileged I am to be writing for a living—especially for young adults—now.

So, thank you.

Sappy rambling over. Now I can go to the UPS store.

I have links up on my site for where you can buy jewelry and posters from Hebel Design and Marissa Mukavetz.

As for buttons, bookmarks, nail polish, the maps… you can either

Is there a release date for Ruin and Rising yet?

My guess is that it will be May or June of 2014?

And I know that’s 9 months away.

And it’s very strange because even though I have copy edits and all that to do, the book is done. And I can’t talk about it. I may splode.

I want a copy of this magazine! And those gifs are basically me when I turned in the revised draft of Ruin and Rising on Sunday night. No lie.
