Zinaida Get Your Gun,
A young girl barely the age of 14, Zinaida Portnova experienced the horror of living under German occupation during World War II. When the German Army passed through her home town in Belorussia, they beat her elderly grandparents, hit her over the head with a rifle butt, and stole her cow. Determined to get revenge, Zinaida joined a local resistance group called the “Young Avengers”. Posing as a harmless little girl, she worked as a cook’s aid in a German Army camp where she would secretly poison the food. When suspicion fell upon her, she tasted the food to “prove her innocence” making herself sick but giving her time to escape. Eventually the Gestapo (secret police) caught up and arrested her. During her interrogation, the Gestapo interrogator laid down a pistol in the middle of the table in an attempt to frighten her. She picked up the pistol and shot him, then shot two guards who rushed into the room. Zinaida escaped the prison but was recaptured. She was executed on January 15th, 1944 (age 17), and posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
I like to think she pointed out the window and shouted, “Look! A gull!”

chubby nina is canon
“she was tall and built like the figurehead of a ship carved by a generous hand”
“i like this one, still nice and round”
“every time she moved, the reindeer cloak parted, revealing a flash of round calf”
“Inej moved to the nearest air duct and lifted the grate. It would be a tight squeeze for Nina, but they’d manage”
“the plunging gown barely covered her substantial cleavage and clung tightly to her buttocks”
“You’re heavier than it says on this paper i wager”
and im sure theres plenty more but id have to re read the book tbh
Chubby Nina is canon.
I’ve had people ask me what size she is or her measurements and I’m not really interested in going down that road. How many people do you know who think they’re too big, too broad, too round, too MUCH? I wrote Nina for all of us and I’m not comfortable policing the way people choose to see her.
I think this is also probably a good time to say, I don’t object to the word fat. It’s a descriptor, not an insult, and bless every body pos blog that has helped me be okay saying, “I’m a fat girl.”
I’m a fat #1 NYT bestselling author who gets hers. Chubby Nina is canon.

My publisher, First Second Books,...

My publisher, First Second Books, is celebrating 10 years of making books. I first encountered them as an attendee at San Diego Comic-Con in 2009. I remember finding Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese, and how deeply it impacted me. It shifted my ideas of what comics could be. I’ve picked up a few of First Second’s books every year since, as a fellow exhibitor in San Diego.
I created this comic to illustrate how I see myself in each of their titles - and it was hard to narrow it down! I didn’t get to include This One Summer, Three Shadows, Same Difference, Battling Boy, Sailor Twain, Sumo, The Undertaking of Lily Chen…agh! I love them all!
As I wrote my forthcoming graphic novel, Pashmina, I had First Second on my mind. Their titles are diverse and literary. When my agent asked me about pitching, I told her that if First Second bought my book, I would be ecstatic… and I still am!
Thank you and congrats, First Second, for 10 years of publishing wonderful books. I am so happy to be part of your family of authors!
We’re super-excited to be publishing Nidhi Chanani’s upcoming graphic novel Pashmina!
