Jesper Fahey's flower

susancai:

Jesper Fahey’s flower: larkspur

There is a Greek myth about the origin of larkspur which is quite interesting, as it can be interpreted to match Jesper’s personality.

“After Achilles died in the Trojan War both Ulysses and Ajax wanted to claim his arms. When the Greeks awarded the weapons to Ulysses, Ajax went into a fit of jealous rage. He stupidly ran at Ulysses with his sword drawn. In turn Ulysses instinctively drew his sword as well and impaled Ajax. From Ajax’s blood sprung beautiful larkspur flowers.”

Hence, larkspurs became a symbol of recklessness because of this Greek myth. And it’s not unknown that Jesper himself is quite reckless, seeing as he is a gambling addict and a talented sharpshooter.

Some time during the Victorian age, larkspurs came to carry the meaning of light-heartedness or “the desire to laugh”. Well, Jesper’s (Wylan-induced) flirting is proof that Jesper is quite carefree. “…You’re a lot cuter when you’re smart.” “Besides, I have other skills that bring me more pleasure and profit than this. Lots of other skills.”

On the other hand, Shakespeare gave larkspur (or as he called it “lark’s heel”) a more negative meaning. As larkspur are highly poisonous, Shakespeare used them as a symbol of death in many of his plays. Likewise, Jesper’s job as a sniper does involve a lot of killing, dying and death.

That pretty much sums up Jesper Fahey in a flower. A reckless, carefree talented sharpshooter who has amazing flirting skills.

I am absolutely loving all of these flower posts.

"Let me make this plain. For most black women in America (although not all), if we allow our hair to..."

“Let me make this plain. For most black women in America (although not all), if we allow our hair to simply grow out of our heads in its natural state, most people will assume that we are making a social and political statement. If we allowed our hair to simply grow out of our heads, many of us would be barred or fired from our jobs. If we allowed our children’s hair to grow similarly, many of our children would be dismissed from their schools. It is 2016. Sit with that for a moment. Most non-black folks fail to grapple with the profound implications of living in a society that institutionally requires an entire group to intervene so utterly in its own bodily reality and sanctions so heavily those who refuse to conform.”

- Melissa Harris-Perry, in her excellent critique of ELLE’s August cover (via femfreq)

That’s at Michael’s Crafts, yes?

you guys, I work at Michael’s, and may I confirm: that is one of our Halloween lines, it is on shelves irl right now, and it is RAD AS HELL. do you see those RED VELVET CANDLESTICKS? that is a CHINHANDS SKULL CANDY DISH in the bottom right corner. and, yup, your eyes do not deceive you: those are indeed GIANT DECORATIVE VULTURES. and a black and gold SKELETON-HAND HOURGLASS. this photograph doesn’t even show you half the best parts of this line (charmingly named Ravenscroft Manor) – I just bought a RED VELVET SKULL, and there are giant silver and gold skulls as well. and picture frames that look like catacombs. and a LIGHT-UP MARQUEE COFFIN, and a candlestick that’s a fancy plinth with a skull AND A LID ON TOP SO YOU CAN PUT TEALIGHTS INTO THE SKULL AND WATCH THE FLAMES FLICKER THROUGH ITS EYE SOCKETS. (there are also black tealights.) there are BAT CANDLESTICKS. there’s a SKELETON DUDE CHILLING IN A COFFIN ALL MEDIAEVAL-ART-LIKE. I don’t even know, okay. this is magical. and there are like three other lines of Halloween decor, and like, black and green and purple glitter tulle, and all the Spooky Town kitsch, and there were a ton of boxes in the back room with labels about Halloween kids’ crafts, and I’M GONNA GO SO BROKE BEFORE OCTOBER EVEN GETS HERE.

What is with all of the cuteness in the tags?

I love Gryffindor Inej and Slytherin Kaz. (ftr, I know people like to put Matthias in Gryffindor, but I think he’s a Hufflepuff.)
