Batgirl....

Sketch that I started down at Project Comic Con. Still need to finish up the inks, but here's the progress scan.

This is the new Batgirl costume for DC. She's back to being Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, but with a newer costume for the 52 relaunch of DC books from last Sept. I'm glad they got he character back to Barbara, but I was actually just getting into the Stephanie Brown Batgirl and really likes her costume when DC pulled the plug and did this relaunch. I think her and the Red Robin books were a couple of the biggest losses when the relaunch happened. I do generally like that DC did the relaunch and I don't have any big problems with it, just miss those costumes and characters.

Mighty Men and Monster Maker....

Jeff Morris is the guy who runs the Project Comic Con down in St. Louis. He had a fantastic idea for a Jam piece by some of the artists who came as guests to the show. He had an old toy called the "Mighty Men and Monster Maker"

The idea of this toy is there are these 3 plastic pieces that have a raised ridge of plastic in the form of various Superheroes and Monsters. The yellow pieces were various heads, the orange were assorted torsos and the red were the collection of different legs. You could either match together the three pieces that formed a complete image or you could mix and match to create new creatures.

After choosing your combination you place the tiles on the left so they would fit together in a 5x7 vertical opening. You would lay a blank piece of paper over the tiles and lower a hinged frame that dropped down over the tiles to keep them and the paper from moving.

Once it was all set, you could take a pencil or crayon and do a rubbing over the paper and the raised ridges would show you just the lines of your Mighty Man or Monster!

So Jeff's commission was to give the artists this toy, let us create our own montster. Then with the rubbing we created, use that as reference to do our own sketch on a jam piece. I chose a Mummy head, a Creature from the Black Lagoon torso, and Frankenstein legs.
Mighty Men and Monster Maker sketch - 326

I wish I had remembered to keep the rubbing I made, that thing was cool.
Here is the final jam piece with Craig Giarrusso, Joe Dodd, Me, Mike Mckone and Kenneth Rocafort

One of the best ideas for a convention sketch jam that I've had the pleasure of being a part of!

Thundercats - Liono...

I rarely do quick head sketches at shows. Mostly because I dont think I'm a very good quick sketch artist. I'm too meticulous, and not willing to let lines seem "messy" or unfinished. It's  weird mental hang up.

At any rate when someone asks for a character I absolutely love drawing, I can't resist. So this took about 10 min. or so and was a quick sketch I did at the Project Comic Con in St. Louis.

Thundercats - Liono - 325

Very early on in my sketch blog I did a Thundercats week. I think throughout the whole year this was the most fun I had. I did each character separately then combined them into this large group image. Mark Roberts did the coloring for me and did two versions. I dont think I've ever shown off the second version below. It show a need contrast and tone to the image.

Both of these are available to buy as prints. They are $10 plus $5 shipping and come in a heavy duty, displayable mylar sleeve.

Huntress...

This was another con sketch done during Project Comic Con down in St. Louis. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed that show. For me it's nice and close and my brother lives like 4 miles away from the convention so it was a great chance to hang out with him. We took some pictures that I'll post as soon as I get them.
Also, for a relatively "small" show, they've consitently brought in amazing comic artists year after year.  For anyone that collects con sketches, this is a great show to come to. Just a few names from the last two years. Andy Kubert, Ethan Van Sciver, Kenneth Rocafort, Mike McKone, Clayton Henry, Jeremy Huan,  Jamal Igle, Ryan Ottley, Pop Mahn, Denny O'Neil and I know I'm missing a ton. Anyway, if this show keeps going like it has, it will be the midwest show to go to!
This was the first sketch of the con, which always takes me the longest. not always the best, but takes me the longest to get into the mindset of it.

Huntress - 324

Juggernaut Inks...

Here's the finished inks on this con sketch. It definitely looks more complete and less comical when the boulder is included and we see the full picture. Atleast I hope so.

Juggernaut..

Pencils for a recent convention sketch of Juggernaut. I'll post the inks shortly. I'm finding more and more that I like drawing these crazy oversized characters. That will work well with our large characters in Elders of the RuneStone. I was always intimidated to draw them when I started out. I think as I studied anatomy more, it became easier to exaggerate the forms and still make it look believable.

Now that I think of it, just showing the pencils make Juggernaut look pretty silly. I havn't drawn the huge boulder in yet that he's going to be holding. And it looks like he's running a way with his hands in the air.
I'm curious what caption you think is appropriate to this piece....

GI JOE year book Colored!

Here's the final colors on all of these. Fun to do just these quick head shots. A chance to draw each character and move on quickly. I'm sure I'll do more as I go along. Thank to Rick Ketcham for inking these up for me and Brian Shearer for doing the colors!
