Growing Up Asian in a Racist World

Just before Christmas, my dear friend, Netta did a Tarot card reading for me. She listed the question, provided the card she pulled, and wrote down what she thought the card meant.

The first question was: What can no longer be hidden? I pulled the Two of Wands here.

She said: It indicates a power struggle of some kind. This could be with another person, but I get the feeling it is internal.

The card said more, but I’ll address that at the end of this post.

I’m a scaredy cat when it comes to the ...

Parisienne Walkways #MusicMonday

In the days of yore (I’m tired of saying, in pre-Covid times!), I’d hear a new song in a store, a restaurant, or some other establishment. If I liked the song, it’d be my mission to learn the name of it immediately. Apps like Shazam helped, but only if I could catch the song in time. I’ve discovered a lot of wonderful music this way, simply by listening to my surroundings.

Now, with only restricted access to the outside world, I follow a few music blogs to stay in touch. One I enjoy is Max’s: Po...

Why Write? via @AuthorsElectric

As a writer, do you know why you write? Somedays, I wonder.

I tried cobbling together a few cogent thoughts on this last night against the backdrop of isolation, a nightmare, and general lack of sleep.

You can find my blog on Authors Electric entitled: Why Write?

Feel free to comment here or at Authors Electric. 😘

Had I Known You Better Then #MusicMonday

Last week, I featured a song written by Daryl Hall, sung by Paul Young.

As part of Hall and Oates, John Oates wrote “Had I Known You Better Then,” and the duo performed it early in their career. It was not one of their biggest hits, but in an interview, Daryl Hall said he wished he’d written the song. The simple lyrics are bittersweet, capturing nostalgia for what might have been, if only …

At times, my heart aches over decisions I’ve made in my life, but that’s the way it goes, isn’t it? We can...

Every Time You Go Away #MusicMonday

Before music streaming services like Apple Music, Tidal, and Spotify were the rage, there were audio cassettes—thanks to Lou Ottens.

Ottens, the Dutch inventor of the cassette tape died March 6, 2021 in the Netherlands at the age of 94.

This was my portable music player when I traveled with my mixed tapes in the eighties. I used to spend hours creating a mix tape from my record albums and 45s. I’m dating myself, but my music and age don’t necessarily line up.

My first exposure to music was on a...

From my Petite Pussy to Lucille Bogan #MusicMonday

Sometimes I discover the best music without looking for it. Serendipity paid me a visit recently and connected me to Lucille Bogan, an American female blues singer from the 1920s.

Here’s how it happened.

Early last week, a writer friend popped up on my feed. A post I wrote for him years ago was getting a lot of attention, so I thought to pay him a visit to see how he was doing.

When he first started, author Gabe Berman had asked me to send him a letter. I wrote one called:  A Letter to My Perfec...

Sorry It’s My Birthday, Roll Up the Rim, and Other Canadiana

Today’s my birthday, so I thought I’d post a meandering blog about some things that are uniquely Canadian. It’s not to say these things don’t exist elsewhere, but Canada is their birthplace. I can say that with certainty about myself, anyway.

Because many Canadians are known to have a sense of humour, and we’ve exported many comedians abroad, including: Samantha Bee; Jim Carrey; Seth Rogan; and others, I thought to write this blog from my quirky, comical point of view.

It started with a meme sen...

I Need You #MusicMonday

Jon Batiste is an accomplished and incredibly talented musician from Louisiana. You probably recognize him as the bandleader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Born into a family of professional musicians, he started playing drums from a young age but switched to piano. I think he really shines when he improvises on the instrument.

“I Need You” is a recent release, and I love how he weaves film, dance, music, and art into the video.

Watching it makes me dream about going...
