Visiting the legendary City Lights Bookstore. It’s already a meaningful place because it’s the site of my first ever book signing, 14 years ago! But to make it even more special, look what I spied while I was there— my mom’s last book. So incredibly proud.

One of the things I love most about being an author: book...
One of the things I love most about being an author: book people. Especially those involved with kids lit. They are, across the board, the loveliest, most enthusiastic, most positive group of folks. The support, generosity, and camaraderie are incredible. From booksellers to librarians to readers to the talented and dedicated bunch working in publishing— not to mention my fellow authors (and my agent beyond-compare, Kerry Sparks). I feel as if I’ve joined the world’s most fun and awesome club. Thanks to all of you for making this YA newbie feel so welcome and at home.

All the Bright Places dream casting
I always “cast” my books when writing them because it helps me picture the characters more vividly.
With All the Bright Places, Elle Fanning was the girl I cast as Violet, long before the movie deal was made and Elle actually became attached to the role. (Yay!!)
Nicholas Hoult (sigh) is the guy I cast as Finch. He’s a bit too manly for the role now (crying), but imagine what it does to my heart when I see them together!
