VERY UNFORTUNATELY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

VERY UNFORTUNATELY FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Today I got an email from a magazine asking if they could reprint something I wrote. Though I don’t know the editor, the tone was very chummy (my first name used in the salutation), but there was no mention of payment. So it seems timely to post this link…

Are your books sold on Kobo as well as Amazon?

For a couple months, all my books were available on Kobo… and I didn’t sell a single copy there.

Most of my book sales - both e-books and dead tree editions - are through Amazon, and my book Kill Your Self: Life After Ego is a Kindle bestseller in the Zen category, thus far peaking at #20.

Whatever you think of Amazon, it’s obviously the most important marketplace these days, and its treatment of authors is exemplary.

This has been feared since 1997, but this is the first time he’s announced it, though he told me in 2000 that he thought he’d make a good governor. Back then, he also said, talking about his age, “I’m getting up there.”

In those days, he seemed to enjoy the rumor, and admitted privately that he didn’t intend to run for...

The Best Doesn't Exist

The Best Doesn't Exist:

Insightful essay by photographer, film-maker, writer and Zen student Kyle Niemier.

Appeals court rules bloggers have same speech protections as journalists

Appeals court rules bloggers have same speech protections as journalists:
A Ninth Circuit Appeals court has overturned a lower-court decision that said that bloggers weren’t entitled to the same free speech protection as journalists.

This is great news, though (as a journalist and blogger) I’ve never understood the perceived difference between the two.

Wonderful reader comment on The Book of Man:

I woke in the afternoon of the first day of 1994, having slept off the debaucheries of a Scottish New Year celebration. I thought I was a few weeks away from finishing The Book of Man, which I had been working on for two and a half years. I took a walk around Leith in the cold, went…

My own memories of this book are of a visit to a library. I was young, lost and bored of a Summer of nothingness and needed something....

“The world continues to be horrifying. One old saw radicals often hear is that when they settle down and have kids, they will want stability and will naturally grow more conservative. This is yet another of those old saws that bounced right off me. I just want the kid to be big enough to push in a normal stroller so we can hit the streets. If anything, radicalism will be the source of any future stability he (or anyone) might enjoy. It’s more a case of where to begin than anything else.”
