Noir and the free market

Noir and the free market:

"I had an eviction notice and a handgun, but I didn’t make any connection between them. Then I read about the invisible hand of the market, and it totally made sense. I wasn’t getting enough work as a musician, and I wasn’t getting hired at different jobs I applied for, so it was time to diversify. I’m reading the book, and I’m seeing that a lot of people are losing their homes, but some people are doing well. So I thought about who was doing well - thieves - and dec...

Reading The King in Yellow

image

I haven’t yet seen True Detective, but I’m looking forward to it based on what I’ve heard and read. I’m currently reading The King in Yellow, which I had never heard of until it got some attention recently because of its influence on True Detective.

The four supernatural stories in the book are vivid and unsettling. Written in the late 19th Century, some of it is set in an imagined 1920s.As I read it on my Kindle while riding a Portland bus to meet up with Bart Lessard...

It’s a very good day when this arrives in the mail, a gift to the collection from one of our very best friends, the first imprint of Lancy Hidy's Dandelion Press, on the esteemed typographer/calligrapher/teacher, Rudolf Koch, this book owned only by three other libraries in the U.S., and a beautiful rare book it is…

What book did u enjoy writting the most

It’s hard to pick one; I loved writing them all, though When It All Comes Down to Dust was emotionally very debilitating to write, because of the amount of time I had to spend inside Frank’s head. I really loved writing How Do You Like Your Blue-Eyed Boy?, but I think the one I enjoyed writing the most is probably One for My Baby. It didn’t hurt that I wrote it during the happiest period of my life so far.

Books written, books to write

I’m gratified by the response so far to One for My Baby. It’s a radical departure for me in various ways - the first book of mine with no reference to childhood, and with no backstory at all, and certainly the most stripped-down book I’ve written. My ambition was to get as close to having a blank page as it’s possible to get while still having a story.

It’s the fourth book in what I call my Phoenix Noir sequence (the others are How Do You Like Your Blue-Eyed Boy?,...

Just A Guy That Likes To Read: Review: ONE FOR MY BABY by Barry Graham

Just A Guy That Likes To Read: Review: ONE FOR MY BABY by Barry Graham:

Best summarised as a noir akin to Stark’s Parker, ONE FOR MY BABY encompasses all the lurid and violent traditions explored in this sub genre of darker crime fiction with the added element of sexual desire and a misguided drive to achieve the American dream…

Just published: One for My Baby

Just published: One for My Baby:

Like many Americans nowadays, Mark has had to take a second job to make ends meet. When not performing as a lounge musician, he commits armed robberies.

It’s all crime all the time in Phoenix, Arizona. When Mark robs a joint owned by a retired mobster, a witness gets a look at his face. Then he falls in obsessive lust with her, and the mob and the cops team up to get rid of him, aided by the husband of one of his casual sex partners…

One for My Baby is a neo-noi...
