Seventy years ago today C. S. Lewis published THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, dedicated to J. R. R. Tolkien. A sample insight: "Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point. A chastity or honesty or mercy which yields to danger will be chaste or honest or merciful only on conditions. Pilate was merciful until it became risky."

Someone found an authentic hand-written note by Tolkien nestled in the pages of a used book. They sold it for 1700 British pounds, about $2600. You might want to riffle through the pages of some old books of yours, especially if you picked them up in a quaint little bookstall somewhere in England!

TIME magazine picks THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE as two of the top 100 English-language novels of the 20th century. We could have knocked a few other novels off their list to make room for more of the Narnia Chronicles . . .

Speaking of theater based on Lewis's fiction, let's not forget the memorable production of "Screwtape Letters" now heading to San Francisco. Perhaps someday a really talented playwright will think of a way to dramatize Lewis's fine book, THE OXFORD HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE, Volume III?

INKLINGS Q & A: In LOOKING FOR THE KING a young American, Tom McCord, is hoping to discover Mount Badon, the site where the old records say Arthur soundly defeated the Saxon hosts. According to Charles Williams, what English towns might be considered candidates for this historic site?
A: Williams wrote that Mount Badon might be modern-day Bath. But it could also be Badbury, Bedwyn, Beedon, Bowdon, or Bownhill. One also finds multiple candidates for the sites of Arthur's birth, for Camelot, for where he obtained Excalibur, and where he is buried (or perhaps just resting!) Maybe Tom's proposed book on Arthur ought to be called Claim A Lot!

INKLINGS Q & A: How did Tolkien first begin writing THE HOBBIT?
A: Tolkien had spent several hours marking student examination books, when he turned a page and found it blank. It seemed almost like an empty canvas waiting for the painter's brush, and so he jotted down one sentence: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." He had no idea what a hobbit was or what sort of adventures he might have. But the very sound and shape of the word set Tolkien's imagination in motion. (Bonus question: If that student writer had been more careful and not skipped a page, might this fantasy classic never have come into being?")
