Essay: Technology as a Character in Science Fiction

science fiction technology 20127729_sExcellent, sci-fi and spanking romance author, Cara Bristol, started a discussion on Facebook, asking about what tech we sci-fi writers and readers would see in the future, relative to what we see now. There were a lot of interesting answers, but as well as answering her question, it got me thinking. If you consider it closely, you would find that in many science-fiction novels (particularly hard sci-fi), the tech is basically a character. That goes for cyborgs, androids, sentient computers (like Hal 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke), artificial intelligence, and even spacecraft. If the tech plays a central part in the story, it’s basically a character.

Let’s dissect this more. When a writer writes new, creative technology into her or his story, she’s got to create the tech (often influenced by current tech, or concept level tech that already exists); she’s got to detail and thoroughly describe the tech in her notes; she might need to draw a sketch of it; she has to decide whether it’s a supporting character or a main character. Those are basically the same steps a writer takes when creating a character profile.

There are lots of books where tech takes a main character role. My Romantek series, for example, uses nanotechnology to do a very important job. The stories would not stand without the manufactured dreams, relying on computer technology and molecular-level devices. While I don’t describe how the technology was created, I do mention who created it, what its purpose is, and how it’s used. I’d call it a supporting character in the books.

Others use cyborgs (Cara Bristol for one), or new and innovative technology like the ramscoop, without which no space travel could take place in many of Larry Niven’s books. Consider the very important technology in The Matrix, or even Time Cop. The venerable book 1984 by George Orwell relies on Big Brother technology, which is outdated now, but was very much a scary future for readers when it was written. There wouldn’t be a story without those machines and artificial intelligences. Consider Ray Bradbury’s awesome short stories (you can find a bunch in I Sing the Body Electric), and his brilliant way of using technology to illustrate the emotional struggles of humans. And, how can we forget the book, The Martian, by Andy Weir? The movie was excellent, but the book went into more technical details, some of which were hilarious, though realistic, and some of which were scary. Well worth the read.

My conclusion is that the best sci-fi includes a “character” that’s pure technology. It’s an important part of building a sci-fi universe, and one which an author ignores to her own peril.

Guest: BJ Wane Shares Blindsided

Blindsided CoverThere’s always something new on the horizon, and in this case, I’ve found a new author. Her brand new book, Blindsided has already garnered five-star reviews from The Romance Reviews and Nichols Reviews. It’s special and different, while still being a wonderful erotic romance. This is the first in BJ’s Virginia Bluebloods Series. Take a taste of this book and see what you think.

A summary:

Eve Sawyer had a bright future ahead of her when a tragic accident costs her everything.  Now, twelve years later, desperation for all she has been missing compels her to seek comfort and pleasure in the arms of strangers.  A few hours indulging in anonymous sex with a man named Nate gave her more pleasure than she ever dreamed possible; unfortunately past experiences with men hadn’t given her any hope that night could ever lead to anything more.  After meeting Nate again and succumbing to his erotic coercion to enter into a sex-only affair, she soon discovers all the different ways a man with a creative imagination can give a woman with limitations the exciting, pleasurable adventures she has been craving.

Nate Radcliff never had trouble forgetting a woman once he left her bed until he spent the night having sex with a woman who insisted on keeping her name a secret and her face hidden in the dark.  A few weeks later, a chance encounter has him coming face to face with the woman he has been obsessing about, and with the fact she is blind.  Immediately struck with admiration for the lengths Eve is willing to go to to brighten her dark world, he becomes determined to give her the adventures she craves.

For weeks Eve basks in the decadent pleasures and adventures both Nate and his friends give her, making sure she keeps her heart guarded from hoping for more, even when Nate insists their sex-only affair has grown into something more for him.  But Nate wasn’t one to give up, especially when he wanted someone as much as he wanted Eve.  Just when his persistence starts to pay off and Eve becomes open to a future with him, her best friend, Holly, returns to town, her jealousy and possessiveness threatening to drive them apart.  Eve refuses to believe anything bad about Holly, the only person who has stayed faithfully by her side through thick and thin, which drives a wedge between her and Nate.  In the end, Eve’s refusal to see her friend’s true motives comes close to not only costing her the man she loves, but to costing her life.

A compelling excerpt:

Nate took a reluctant step back.  He had no idea why he couldn’t let it go, let her go, all he knew was he has never been intrigued by or drawn to a woman with such a strong pull before.  Discovering her blindness answered a few questions, but raised several more, like how often did Camille set her up and how had she found the courage to attempt rock climbing blind?  Never one to run from a challenge, he persisted by changing the topic.

“Why rock climbing?  I’d think you’d have enough challenges to cope with without adding to them.”

Eve’s first reaction was to snap back again that it was none of his business, but she wasn’t used to people, especially men, being so open and inquisitive with her.  Most people tiptoed around her, coached their remarks and avoided any mention of her blindness.  Nate’s blunt curiosity bordered on rudeness, but she enjoyed the refreshing novelty of it even though she had no intention of encouraging him.

“I enjoy engaging my mind and my body with new challenges,” she replied, leaving it at that.  “Now, I really must go.  Carl?”

“Right here pumpkin.  Mr. Radcliff,” Carl said, holding out his hand.  “It was nice to meet you.”

“Same here,” Nate murmured as he watched them get in the car.  He hoped being able to put a face and a name to his mystery woman ended this ridiculous infatuation he has developed.

BJ Wane’s bio, in her own words:

I live in the Midwest with my husband and our two dogs, a Poodle/Pyrenees mix and an Irish Water Spaniel.  I love dogs, enjoy spending time with my daughter, babysitting her two dogs, reading and working puzzles.  We have traveled extensively throughout the states, Canada and just once overseas, but I much prefer being homebody.  I worked for a while writing articles for a local magazine but soon found my interest in writing for myself peaking.  My first book was strictly spanking erotica, but I have slowly evolved to writing more towards erotic romance with an emphasis on spanking.  I wrote that first book mostly for fun, never dreaming it would be published, and after it was accepted I didn’t have any intentions of writing any more in this genre.  That was seventeen books ago and I’m still managing to find them interesting and fun to write.

I love hearing from readers and can be reached by e-mail at bjwane@cox.net.

Guest: Cara Bristol Brings Mated with the Cyborg

Cover: Mated with the CyborgHello, everyone!

You know, I have guests regularly here on my blog, and I enjoy introducing you to new writers and new books, but there are some guests who really stand out as consummate professionals, talented writers, and all-around nice people. Cara Bristol is one of these folks. I hope you’ll welcome her with her latest book, Mated with the Cyborg, Book 2 of the Cy-Ops Series. (Although this is part of a series, it stands alone.) I love sci-fi romance (have written some myself), and if you like sci-fi romance, too, you’ll love this book.

A brief description of Mated with the Cyborg:

Kai Andros’s orders were simple. Get in. Gather the intel on the terrorist organization. Get out. Then he met her. Mariska. Beautiful. Innocent. Ignorant of her father’s atrocities. And marked for death. His orders said nothing about saving her. But he did. He went off-mission.

Can a rogue cyborg outrun both Cyber Operations and the terrorists to save the woman he loves?

Mated with the Cyborg is an action-packed erotic sci-fi romance between a man with a mission and a woman with a secret that jeopardizes their lives and the fate of the galaxy.

Check out this excellent excerpt!

Her father pushed back his chair and patted Janai’s head before rounding on Mariska.

She dropped her gaze to the floor. Her stomach was already there. Show no fear. Show no fear.

“Stand up,” Obido ordered.

She attempted to rise, but her feet tangled in her skirt. R981’s arm shot out as if to keep her from stumbling.

“What are you doing?” Obido glared at the android.

“I am performing my duty and assisting her,” he replied.

“Your duty is to report to me.” Her father confirmed what she’d suspected.

“She was about to fall.”

It sounded like R981 was arguing. The general must have thought so, too, because his eyes narrowed on the android, but then he jerked his attention back to her. “Remove your scarf.”

No one had seen her face since she was a child teased to tears by her siblings. It had been a relief to be ordered to wear the veil to spare the sensibilities of others and escape their horrified looks. While bathing, she avoided the reflection glass and its taunting reminder of her ugliness. Stomach clenching into a hard knot, she released the opaque fabric from one side of her headdress.

Her father grimaced, and Janai, who’d never seen her naked face, gasped.

Mariska held her head high and stared straight ahead.

HOLY HELL! KAI Andros almost fell over. This was what Lamis-Odg considered deformed, ugly? Fortunately, his black contact lenses concealed most of his shock. Intel intercepted by Cyber Operations had reported the fifth daughter of one of the most infamous terrorists had a “significant facial defect.” Her eight sisters had been married—mated was the term these people used—but no one wanted her, fearing she would produce hideous offspring.

He hadn’t seen her face until now.

In the genetic game of chance, Mariska had been dealt a royal flush.

Don’t gawk! A real android wouldn’t react, but as a cyborg, a red-blooded heterosexual man working undercover as a robot, how could he not?

Back to Work, Last Vacation Post

Hello, friends. As promised, here’s the last installment of my vacation news. We’re back and working, catching up on things that were waiting for us.

Our vacation trip was splendid. We did all the things we wanted to do, ate yummy US food (the food here in Calgary is…well, it’s not a foodie culture), visited with friends from Los Angeles, and relaxed. I think relaxation was the most important thing. The weather in Vegas wasn’t that great, mostly cloudy and gray, but it didn’t matter from our suite on the 36th floor. The view was always fresh and pretty. I highly recommend the Venetian resort.

I don’t have photos to share with you. Although we had some photo-ops, we were forgetful and didn’t take photos as we should have. But I do have a video. I’ve never posted a vid on this blog before, so bear with me if it links funny or something.

http://patriciagreenbooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Fireworks-Dec-31-2015-Las-Vegas.mp4

The video is of the fireworks that were shot off at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s night, while we were in Las Vegas. Three things I’d like to point out. First, stay through the end to see the grand finale. It’s worth seeing. Second, my husband misspeaks in the soundtrack. The fireworks came from 7 hotels (including the top of ours, right overhead as we were on the top floor). And third, check out the reflection of our hotel’s fireworks off the windows of the Palazzo nearby.

Foodie moment: We ate at a funky restaurant called Sushi Samba, one night. It was a kind of wild, primitive setting, despite being at the Palazzo hotel. There were crazy graffiti pictures on the walls, and a repeating video of tribal dancing projected in several spots. The food was a combination of Brazilian, Portuguese, and Japanese. That sounds pretty weird, huh? But it was remarkably good. Strange, but good. We ordered in the Japanese style: “omakase”, which means “trust.” You set a price point and trust the chef will offer dishes that meet your expectations at that price. They did a superlative job with it. There was more food than we could eat. The cocktails were also unique and delicious. If you want an good foodie experience that leads to stories, try Sushi Samba at the Palazzo hotel in Las Vegas.

Speaking of stories, I have one last trip story to impart. Our return trip was travel hell. The weather was wet (unusual for the desert, even in winter), but we weren’t daunted. It seemed pretty mild to us. And, because it is an international flight, we got to the airport about 3 hours in advance of our 6:40 p.m. flight. Those are always boring hours, but we were armed with our iPads, books, and I had my knitting, so we were prepared. We got through check-in and security with no problems. Both of us hate the “naked body scanners” (body x-ray system) but we persevered and took our radiation dose. Once we got to the gate we got an unpleasant surprise, however: our plane was delayed by 5 hours. The rain had, apparently, prevented a lot of flights from landing at McCarren (Las Vegas’ international airport) because that airport has no Automated Landing System, which is technology used by a great many airports for bad-weather landings. Generally, Las Vegas has good weather, so such an expensive system had never been necessary. So, because of this rainstorm, flights into McCarren were delayed or even canceled.

We dreaded the idea of sitting at the airport gate for 5 extra hours (remember, we were already early by 3 hours, so the total would have been 8), so we cast about for solutions. We have an American Express card, and found out that American Express has a “club” at McCarren. We sought it out and discovered that for a fee, we could utilize their lounge, including free food and cocktails, for our wait time. We jumped at the chance. There were couches, comfy chairs, tables, power sockets, decent food, and ever-flowing alcohol (and other drinks). The place was quite busy owing to all the delayed flights, but it had room for us, and it was a hugely better alternative to the hard chairs at the gate. So we knitted, read, and video’d until it was time for our plane to board. We got to the gate again and saw that the flight was still 5 hours behind, but we were nearing the end goal, so we sat and waited, and waited, and waited. Eventually, the plane was ready to board just before midnight. Leaving at midnight meant that we’d be landing at about 3 a.m.

home dog 15377316_sKen and I had not brought parkas with us to Las Vegas. It seemed stupid to drag heavy weather gear on our vacation where it would certainly not be used, so we were woefully unprepared for a middle of the night landing in Calgary. As the pilot was taxiing the plane into Calgary international airport, he said that the temperature outside was “minus 50” (Celcius, which is about -58 F). We thought of what it would be like waiting in the frostbite-inducing outdoors while hailing a cab in the middle of the night, and decided to stay overnight (or over what was left of the night) at the Delta Hotel at the Calgary airport, and embark on our homeward ride right from the taxi stand at the hotel at a reasonably “warm” time of day the next day (Wednesday). So we trudged through the airport, never going outside, until we got to the hotel, checked in–this was about 4:15 a.m. because we had to go through customs at the airport. Turns out, the pilot of the plane had actually said it was “minus 15” not 50 (so about 5 F), and we probably could have braved the cold for just long enough to get home. But c’est la vie; we were tired, and it seemed like a good idea at the time to stay at the airport hotel. The next afternoon, we got a cab and trundled home. Our last day of vacation–intended to be a post-travel rest and recuperation day–was completely lost. But, at least we had that cushion day and didn’t need to worry about going immediately back to work the same day we got home.

That was our “travel hell” experience. Awful as it was, the vacation was worth the travel inconvenience. We had a lovely time and anticipate something equally lovely for our 25th anniversary, just 5 years away.

Thanks for following along my anniversary maunderings. Back to normal now!

Guest: Summer Graystone Brings Kaia’s Christmas Mistletoe

Kaia's Christmas MistletoeSummer Graystone is a Facebook friend and colleague who has written five fun books with some different themes. All are spanking romances of one sort or another. The following is her latest release, titled Kaia’s Christmas Mistletoe. Please join me in welcoming her to Patricia Green Books for the first time.

Teaser:

When pop sensation Kaia is informed by her record label that her next collaboration will be with the infamous Oliver McFadden she’s furious to say the least. She’s supposed to hate him. He stole everything from her. And no matter how hard she tries, she can’t get it back. It was an evil thing to do and she’s resolved never to forgive him.

There was something about him though.

It was those eyes, the way he looked at her. His lips, the way his voice made her weak in the knees. He made her feel like she was the only girl in the room. Being forced to maintain a façade of friendship in public for marketing purposes, is hard enough, but a surprise kiss under the mistletoe only leaves her confused and conflicted.

Oliver McFadden has known Kaia for years, and despite her bratty attitude toward everything and everyone, he wants more than a work relationship with the maddening woman. He wants to have her over his lap, giving her the discipline he knows she needs so desperately. But that’s dangerous. If he’s wrong, he might lose her forever.

As they spend more time together, Kaia realizes that perhaps she has spent her time hating someone she doesn’t even really know. Oliver might just be the one. She can’t control herself around him and he makes her feel so special, his ways so different from any other man she’s known. But are her new feelings enough to overcome her difficult past with the man – or do they just complicate it?

This Christmas, Kaia Monroe will be opening more than presents. She might just learn to open her heart to love too.

Publisher’s Warning: This is an erotic novella that includes spankings, graphic sexual scenes, elements of BDSM, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book.

And here’s an intriguing excerpt:

Mr. Goldstein was perplexed and it showed on his wrinkled face.  He then informed them that they didn’t have a choice.  The song had already been written and he went further to state that his would be an excellent opportunity for them to show workmanship.

Kaia could hardly believe her ears, he was literally stipulating that they had to work with each other whether they like it or not.  Just the thought of having to sing besides him and join him on tour was enough to make her barf.  After having a great concert last night, she was coming to this.  Had she known, she would not have stopped by the office today.

Slamming his hand on the desk in frustration their CEO informed her that his decision was final, this duet between them was going to happen. “People aren’t dying to hear what next great song you make Kaia.  They like drama, gossip – reality TV, celebrity hook-ups and break-ups.”

“Yes, absolutely but this is…” Kaia tried to find the most decent word to express how upset she felt without being rude.

“Kaia, the two of you doing a song together will get people talking. We’ll get the kind of gossip that we want.  We need that buzz.”

“She does not like me Aaron,” McFadden chimed in. “And I don’t even think I like her all that much either,” he added, a lopsided grin touching his lips.

“I’m sure you two professionals can work something out.  You’re performers aren’t you? So perform. Pretend to like each other.”

He did have a point the music business was currently dominated by one set of artists managed by one record label, everyone else was basically struggling to get more than a few dozen sales.  After much more coaxing by the older wiser man, Kaia and McFadden finally agreed to do the song.

I’m sure you’ll want to find out what happens next, so grab a copy of the book at Amazon.

Six More Days Left in Vegas

Hello everyone! I hope you’ve been reading my guests’ posts and enjoying the excerpts. So many good books out there.

I’m still in Las Vegas for my twentieth wedding anniversary, and we’re doing it up big. Last week, I showed you pictures of our room. This week, I have a few more things to share.

Picture 1 is the view from our hotel suite. It looks over part of the strip and off into greater Las Vegas. The Palazzo, nearest, is the Venetian’s sister property. They share “Restaurant Row” and the gondola rides.

Picture 2 is of Ken and I having one of our anniversary dinners. This one is at Aquaknox, a seafood restaurant in the Venetian. They presented us with a dessert plate where they’d written “Happy Anniversary” in chocolate.

Picture 3 is of Ken hamming it up at The Beatles Love by Cirque de Soleil. It was a magnificent show. So big and bold that it sometimes brought tears to our eyes. The music (all Beatles tunes, of course) was awesome.

Picture 4 is of the fried Oreos dessert we had at Yardbird after a night out with friends. The night before, we saw Jersey Boys. Another terrific show.

Picture 5 is of Ken and I having another anniversary dinner. This one is at Delmonico’s, an Emeril Lagasse restaurant here in the Venetian. The food was sumptuous. We ate way more than we ought to, but we had so much fun.

Picture 6 is our anniversary dessert at Delmonico’s. Eggnog ice cream with a sweet message on the plate.

Tonight, we’re going to see Rock of Ages, a rock-n-roll retrospective production. That ought to be fun.

Next Thursday… last set of pictures.

I hope you’re enjoying this little photo journal. It’s fun to share it with you.

Happy New Year! May your 2016 be bright with promise, warm with love, healthy, happy, and prosperous!

Guest: Renee Rose Brings The Don’s Daughter

There are a few true “powerhouses” in the spanking romance world. I can list a handful if I try. Renee Rose is definitely on that list. She’s multi-published, a bestselling author, and has won awards for her achievements. I’ve read each of her books, salivating over every word and turn of the plot. I think you’ll enjoy The Don’s Daughter, part of the Bossman series.

Renee penned this little introduction:

Hi Trish!  Thanks so much for [spotlighting] The Don’s Daughter, the third in a mafia D/s romance series. It was my favorite in the series, and readers seem to agree–they are calling this one the best yet!

The Don’s Daughter 400x600Here is the description of The Don’s Daughter:

Giving control of her body to Carlo Romano, underboss to her father, was dangerous. More dangerous than her hair-brained idea to take off her clothes at a strip club as a form of sex therapy. But the temptation outweighed the risk. Carlo made her feel sexy, alive and appealing, feelings she’d scarcely known after two years with her cheating and demoralizing ex-boyfriend.

Carlo couldn’t believe Summer — the don’s daughter — was dancing half-naked on the stage of a strip club. Nor could he believe she suggested he’d be the one to take a belt to her ass and set her straight. But he’d had a thing for Summer since the day he moved in with her family, fresh off a plane from Sicily. He couldn’t walk away from the opportunity to get up-close and intimate, and show her his dominant side.

Still, Summer may not be ready for a new relationship, and even if she is, there was the not-so-small matter of what her parents would say — her father would probably want to kill Carlo if he found out he’d seen her naked…

And here is a wonderful excerpt:

“Here’s the rule and I expect you to remember it–you don’t wear that dress out again. Ever. The only time you’re allowed to wear that dress is for me, in private.”

The retort she appeared to be gathering fell away when his words registered. Her mouth fell open. “For you…?”

A prickle of heat made him unbutton the collar on his designer shirt. Was he going to stake his claim on her now? Or keep things loose and undefined? Her wide copper-colored eyes contained something resembling hope. His heart picked up speed.

He who hesitates…

“Yeah.” He slammed her with a possessive stare. “You heard me.”

She met the challenging gaze and swallowed.

“I think you need looking after.”

“And…you’re the man to do it?”

The corners of his lips kicked up. “That’s right.”

“So…what? You’re like, my body guard?”

He shook his head. “No. I’m your keeper.”

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada

Hello everyone — Merry Christmas!

As mentioned in a previous post, my husband and I are celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas for two weeks. We’re staying at the Venetian hotel, which is an all-suite hotel right on the Las Vegas strip. We got what — for us — is a luxury, second-honeymoon type of room. I think it’s bigger than our condo at home. I’m sharing a few pictures.

We got in late last night, so not much more to report, but I’m sure I’ll have more pictures to share next week.

The first picture is of Ken in the living room of the suite. It’s massive — the picture doesn’t do it justice. It’s quite elegant, though I could wish for some brighter flashes of color. However, I’m not known for my decorating sense.

The next picture is of our dining room. It has four chairs and a very large table, but could easily seat six. We have friends coming over from L.A. to spend time with us, as well as business meetings (it’s always something), so we’ll make good use of it.

The third picture is of the office. It’s a well-lit area and as you can see, my laptop is ready to get to work.

The last picture is of me, playing with my phone which has a “wide angle selfie” feature I’ve never used before. Alvin the Chipmunk has nothing on me — check out those cheeks!

I’ll try to get a nice view picture when the strip is all lit up tonight.

Have a very lovely holiday, no matter what you celebrate. The Winter Solstice was December 22, so we’re well on our way to summer! Yay!

Guest: Meeting Mr. Pink by Angela Sargenti

Welcome to all my guests, and a special welcome to Angela Sargenti, who is making her first appearance on Patricia Green Books. I’m sure it won’t be her last. Today, she’s introducing us to Meeting Mr. Pink, a brand new book that has so much character and down home charm, I can’t say enough about it. I hope you’ll be as captivated by her style as I am.

Here’s a bit about Meeting Mr. Pink:

Bored and restless, Gwen refuses to marry her long-time beau, Earl. He endeavors to end her boredom by introducing her to something new—kink. In particular, domestic discipline, bondage, and spanking. He even buys her a paddle of her own, nicknamed Mr. Pink. When he puts her over his knee and spanks her with it, she takes a shine to her special new friend. Can Mr. Pink help persuade the reluctant Miss to become a happily-married Mrs., or will their relationship unravel?

And a fun excerpt (I love the tone and cadence of this):

Mr. Pink CoverEarl reached out a still-trembling hand and drew me to him.

“I got some money saved up for the wedding, Gwen.”

I stiffened in his arms and pulled away.

“What wedding?”

“Ours.”

I glanced away.  How was I ever going to convince him to quit bringing it up?

As if reading my mind, he answered.

“If you ain’t never gonna marry me, Gwen, then I think you ought to quit leading me on.”

“Me?”

“Yeah, you.  Look at what you’re wearing.  No woman dresses like that unless she’s trying to get a man to marry her, or she’s a whore.”

Eyes wide, I turned to him.

“You calling me a whore, Earl Springer?”

“No, the other one.”

“I am not trying to get you to marry me, so you can just put that idea right out of your head.”

“Why not?  What’s so wrong about me?”

“It ain’t you.  I told you that before, Earl.  I just don’t want to get stuck in this town.  I’m sick and tired living here.  I just want to move up to Raleigh and run me a Chinese restaurant or something.”

“Why can’t you do that here, sugar?  Hell, you already got the diner.”

“It don’t matter where I try to do it, Earl.  I ain’t got the money in the first place.”

“Then I’ll work harder, baby.  We can close down the diner for a little bit and change it around, just the way you want it.  I don’t want your dream to slip away, Gwen.  You’ve always been there for me.”

I gazed into his eyes.  He was being real, almost too real for me.

“You know I love you, baby,” he told me.

I stared off into the distance, trying to imagine myself anywhere but here.  The fact that I couldn’t frightened me a little.  My eyes met his again and he looked wounded, like my silence had hurt him.  I felt awful about it and tried to smooth things over.

“I’m sorry, Earl.  You know I love you, but I don’t think I can stand living here the whole rest of my life.”

“Well, can’t I come with you, honey?  We can get married, make it all legal and all.”

“Let me think about it a while,” I said, rising to my feet.

“Think about what?” he asked.  “What’s there to think about?”

“Just…I don’t know.”

Earl bent down and started gathering up his clothes.  I watched in dismay, and then I went back into the bedroom to change out of my pretty new corset.

I looked down at myself.

Earl was right.

I had no right whetting his sexual appetite the way I did if I had no serious intentions toward him.

When I came back into the living room, he was all dressed and on the point of leaving.

“I gotta go, honey,” he told me, giving me a peck on the cheek.  “There’s a car broke down on the interstate I have to tow.”

Feelings of guilt washed over me.  Earl worked so hard, going to his regular job and then driving the tow truck several nights a week, a job that made me sick with worry.  People wrecked out on the highway all the time these days.  Hell, last year a state trooper even got killed when a drunk veered off the road.

When I thought about it, I felt pretty foolish.

What more could I ask for?
