“My mother groaned, my father wept,
into the dangerous world I leapt.”
― William Blake

“Our names were made for us in another century.”
― Richard Brautigan

“After all, what is every man? A horde of ghosts – like a Chinese nest of boxes – oaks that were acorns that were oaks. Death lies behind us, not in front – in our ancestors, back and back until...”
― Walter de la Mare, The Return

“We are all a complete mixture; yet at the same time, we are all related. Each gene can trace its own journey to a different common ancestor. This is a quite extraordinary legacy that we all have inherited from the people who lived before us. Our genes did not just appear when we were born. They have been carried to us by millions of individual lives over thousands of generations.”
― Bryan Sykes, The Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry

"The scepter [kingship] shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh [the Messiah] comes; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be..."
- Genesis 49, Verse 10

“I do not believe that I am dreaming yet I can not prove that I am not”
- Bertrand Russell

I spent most of my life totally unaware of my ancestral heritage. Sure, I knew of the personal history of my more immediate relatives; but beyond that I never had any inkling as to my ancestral heritage. Then one day several years ago my sister said to me, "I sometimes wonder about our ancestral background." And so my quest to discover our genealogical roots commenced.

I started building my family tree with the very basic relationships, going back in time from my grandparents, one ancestor at a time. That initial effort proved to be the hardest part of the pursuit, mainly due to my lack of expertise as a novice genealogical researcher. As I gained familiarity with the data bases and how to efficiently mine them, my progress gained ever-increasing momentum. Today the tree contains nearly 120,000 names.

During this trek back in time, I encountered fascinating figures in both history and obscurity. This blog contains many stories about their genealogical relationship to me (and many of you). By far and away, as a student of history, the historically obscure individuals are of particular interest to me. I cite Baron Montmorency-Laval as an example of an historically maligned personage whose real contribution to history, as both a playwright and hero of France, has yet to be recognised. Another example is Earl Edward de Vere, who's yet to gain widespread recognition as the actual author of the body of literary work wrongly ascribed to William Shakespeare.

The following lists other examples of obscure ancestors of mine who're far from being historical household names:

Henry de Beaumont
Boudica, Queen of Iceni
Regnault de Chartres
Crínán of Dunkeld
Tonantius Ferreolus
Henry Fitz Ailwin de Londonestone
Robert Guiscard de Hauteville
Sir Thomas de Holland
Geoffroy de la Tour Landry
Eustache Le Sueur
Anne de Montmorency
Fulk V d'Anjou Plantagenet
Anna de Rochechouart
Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc
Alan Rufus
Prince Henry Sinclair
Commodore John Drake Sloat
Tamara Tea Tephi
John Tripp
Elihu Yale

In several instances of the above, wherein some significant note of their existence has been recorded, I've discovered that it's either woefully incomplete or outright inaccurate, especially from a genealogical standpoint. For instance, Eustace Le Sueur, founder of Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, is mischaracterised, albeit unintentionally, as having no familial relationship with the Le Sueurs of Normandy. Moreover, no real familial connection has been recorded between himself and several contemporary Le Sueur artists, such as Hubert and Jean-Francois Le Sueur.

Believe or not, my research has resulted in rewriting history (but not officially, as of yet) with respect to several historical household names. One prime example is Christopher Columbus.

My main purpose in developing this blog remains to provide interesting information about our ancestors in the context of their genealogical relationships to one another. Therein lies the fascinating part of history, at least for me. For instance, the 97 Historically Noted Poets, Authors, Playwrights and Publishers blog post clearly demonstrates a pattern of ancestral relationships between renown writers and publishers. For example, Alexandre Dumas is related to Plantagenets whose descendants produced many fine authors over time.

You'll note in review of the lineage information preceding Ancestry.com citations for family tree relationships that all roads lead to me (an unintended but salubrious consequence in the main). Take, as an example, one direct relationship established between William the Conqueror and myself as follows:

William the Conqueror, 6th Duke of Normandy, 1st Norman King of England

26th great grandfather PLANTAGENET-HOWARD-WOOD
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/465887...

The lineage starts with William's immediate family (Normans) and descends through the Plantagenets, Howards and Woods (my paternal grandmother's maiden name).

Someday, in order to facilitate establishment of your personal genealogical relationships with key (or even obscure) figures in history, I plan to develop gateway ancestral data base software through which you'll be able to automatically merge your subset ancestors into a broader genealogical data base. In other words, if one can exhibit a direct link with his or her ancestry to a co-signer of the Mayflower Compact, for instance, then the program will be able to automatically produce genealogical relationship(s) to, say, William the Conqueror or anyone else for that matter, either historical or contemporary in nature.

Conceivably, this program will have far-reaching scientific and historical research applications (not to mention the opportunity to provide me with a measure of humility). Moreover, imagine having the capability to just input a name and related vital statistics to receive a complete and precise genealogical analysis of your ancestral relationships to an important historical figure before your very eyes within a few seconds afterward. Add DNA comparisons/correlations to that and the potential applications in science and business become formidable, particularly as applied to the disciplines of human resource management and medicine. Sounds rather daunting? Well, if you consider "six degrees of separation" theories, it really shouldn't be.

In closing, I haven't really blazed too many new ancestral trails of historical significance with this work (which isn't my main purpose as a genealogical historian) . In fact, thanks to the efforts of professional researchers direct ancestral ties with many of us to historical figures, such as Charlemagne, has already been firmly established. You can view one good example of important genealogical work to confirm this assertion at A Few Royal, Noble and Notable Ancestors of Thomas Knowlton Gibson .
