Secrets in the Shallows



Yesterday, "Secrets in the Shallows" gained a lot of momentum and ended up at the #88 rank on Amazon's Paranormal E-book List. Other featured authors on this list are Stephen King and Anne Rice. I'm thrilled that our book managed to be put on a list with such literary giants in this genre! To top things off, our book also reached the overall rank of #65,594 yesterday. Thank you to all of our family & friends for supporting our efforts!

As a special treat, I'd like to share a short excerpt from BOOK 2 from The Monastery Murders, called "Devil in the Details". ENJOY THE SNEAK PEAK!

Adrenalin pulsed through the attacker’s veins as the ropes encircling Tom Green’s neck went taunt. Power over the victim was like an addictive drug to the would-be killer. Each pull on the rope rubbed the victim’s neck raw and crushed his airway. An intense emotional rush filled the assailant with momentary satisfaction and supreme elation born from control over life and death.

The long sleeves of a habit's robe flared back with each yank, as the victim desperately tried to break free. Straining to hold Tom captive until he passed out, the attacker held a firm control. “You just had to run your big mouth, didn’t you?”

Tom’s unconscious body fell limply on the ground, still entangled in the rope. Shadows from the surrounding trees parted just enough for the pale early moonlight to shine on him. Standing there and quietly smiling, the attacker glanced over the sprawled victim for several seconds, before casting the rope aside.

It's been a little while since I updated my GoodReads blog, so I thought I'd go ahead and do that now. It's been a great year for our paranormal murder mystery, "Secrets in the Shallows." Book 1 of the Monastery Murders, that I co-authored with Karen Vance Hammond, won the 2014 Paranormal Awards category for Fictional Literature! I'm so thrilled with the response to our book. Thank you to everyone who has supported Karen and I in our writing ventures. If you haven't had a chance to check out "Secrets in the Shallows," you can read a free excerpt on Goodreads, or check it out on Amazon or Barnes and Nobel.

I'm also very excited about continuing this story into the second book in the series, "Devil in the Details." We anticipate to have it out early 2015. Although I am disappointed that we weren't able to finish it in time for the holidays in 2014, I would rather the story be exactly right than rush to complete it and not have it be finished exactly right. Look for more information soon on the release of "Devil in the Details."

In addition to the publishing news, I have been working on a new blog site. "On the Ragged Edge" will feature both the info for my books, reviews (for both mine and other authors), as well as any other projects that I am working on. I've also been working on some initial concepts for several screenplays with my other half, Chris Matheny. I'll provide updates on everything as they come available. The first books in the series,"Secrets in the Shallows" (Book 1) and "Devil in the Details" (Book 2) won the 2014 and 2015 Paranormal Awards for fiction, respectively. It's a strange, but wonderful feeling to finally finish this extremely long goal. It's the longest project I've ever undertaken, and I can't believe I'm finally done.

In order to promote my entire series before the holidays, I am going to take a break for a couple of mont s from actually writing. This doesn't mean that I'm not working on future projects. Some people will be happy to know that one my next goals is to produce audiobook editions of all three books. At this time I can't estimate when this project will be done, but we are preparing to work on it very soon.

Since the books in this series are part of a single long story, I am considering making it into an omnibus (a complete series within a single book). I'd love to hear some feedback on what my readers think about this idea. Please make comments below to let me know your opinion.

In addition to everything else, I have already begun to think about what I will include in the next series. Although this first series is a complete story, there are new questions that have arisen towards the end of book 3 which need to be answered. I won't talk about any spoilers, but my readers will figure some of the new aspects when they read book 3. I don't have a title I want to officially promote yet, but I do have a strong storyline for the new series. I will tell everyone that the new series will be a combination of a sequel and prequel to the first one. I have some great plans for it and I'm very excited about what's in store. I promise it will be a great addition to the existing story. Since I'm still in the planning stages, I don't know many details, but I'll let everyone know more as soon as possible. I anticipate that I'll have the first book of the new series released by late 2017.

#FuryoftheFallen is coming late 2019! Here's the first excerpt release to give you a taste of what's in store.

Excerpt from Chapter 1, Fury of the Fallen:

Suddenly, Megan’s radio came to life. A gruff, male voice asked, “How’s it going, rook? Finished with the west side, yet?”

Pushing her com button, Megan replied, “Just dousing a few hot spots, Chief, but I’m almost done.”

“Good, let me know when you’re finished. I just found out some new details about the incident, and I need to update everyone before we do anything else.”

“I’ll wrap it up, and head your way, sir.”

“Make it quick.”

“You got it, Chief,” Megan said as she noticed one last area that needed some attention. Carefully stepping over some fallen timbers, she headed towards the corner. Just as she put her foot down, the debris under her boot shifted, revealing a charred hand sticking up from the ashes. Startled, she screamed.

Her radio squawked. “Rookie? What’s going on over there?”

Still shaken up a little, Megan tried to regain her composure. She stared at the blackened, clenched fingers in shock, as she responded, “Sir, you’ll want to come and take a look over here. I’ve found a body.”

It is gripping stuff, a story that hooks you right from the start and drags you deep into a traditional murder mystery but with a paranormal twist. This is a real page-turner and, although there are several stories going on, I promise you that they all have something to do with the main plot, even when they seem to be totally unrelated. This is very clever writing as Ms. Brouillette leads you through a haunting and horrific tale, gradually spilling clues and building suspense as the novel reaches its cliffhanger of an ending, landing you with a crash into book 2. I felt every emotion throughout this book. I felt as though I were there every step of the way. This is an eerie story with fantastic characters and I guarantee you will not have a clue who the murderer is. I made a few guesses but was wrong every step of the way.
